I saw this today, it pinged on my memory, and I was bored enough to go searching. I found it, so I am presenting the thread in a coherent manner for your entertainment.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, gas prices jumped. On the local FB page there was a post complaining/commenting about the gas prices. There was one particular man who was really pretty crude on that post. Lots of racism, blatant ignorance, insults and offensive language. The thread got locked because of that one guy. (It stuck in my memory because it was really that nasty). And he was really upset because gas prices were $4.50ish a gallon. He also proudly commented that he had a big truck, one with dual rear wheels. So his gas mileage is likely pretty bad.

Beginning of April, same guy posted that his truck got totaled and he's looking for a new vehicle. Complaining about the price of vehicles, etc. Again, he ended up getting pretty nasty. Again, post got locked.

Today, I see a post on the FB page. That guy. Complaining about gas prices (they're going up again). He's got a new vehicle: a pickup truck. Ford Super Duty F-350 XL. Red. Yes, he's so proud of his truck that it's his profile picture. And my quick google search indicates that truck gets around 12mpg. Incidentally, that post is also now locked due to him being nasty, and I think he's banned from the group this time.

He just bought a new vehicle. Did he set aside his ego to get something with even slightly better fuel usage? No. He basically did the opposite.

Well, everyone who reads his posts sure knows who he is now.  3 good demonstrations, he went way past Maya Angelou's advice.

Does he "roll coal" as well?  Our gas is $1.95/l (or more depending on location), about US $5.68/g.  Good thing he doesn't live here!

Yuuuuup.  There’s another new Starbucks cup today.

Well, it’s been a while, but today they posted that they picked up FOUR new Starbucks cups

Hey, that means they went most of March and the whole month of April without buying one! Progress?

Not a chance.  95% of my Facebook use is for Marketplace, I rarely ever scroll through my feed so there’s very little chance I’ll happen to see a new Starbucks Cup post, so checking their profile, they also got 3 cups last week.  Got tired of scrolling after that, they post a minimum of 15 - 25 posts (of mostly painful to look at Facebook garbage) a day, so after scrolling through over 100 posts I can’t take any more.

I don't think rolling coal is really a thing in my area. I've certainly never seen it, the only thing close is vehicles that are clearly in dire need of a mechanic.

Well, I’ve noticed near non-stop posts from them complaining about money, and about how their ex wasn’t making payments on his car and the lender was taking it directly out of her account to cover it and about how they couldn’t afford to eat with that extra payment… and then this morning she’s announcing she’s going on a cruise 🤦‍♂️

Just when you think it can't get worse.

My FIL recently called (drunk) and complained for an hour (this guy usually talks for 10 min) about how he's "BROKE" and only has $3000 to his name and it's all his kids' fault because of the cost of college (which was 30 years ago).  Oh, but he'd literally just gotten home from a cruise to the condo in Florida.  (But his new WIFE paid for the cruise, it's not really his money.)  Whatevs.

Posted on facebook by a lady my wife goes to church with in reference to her BRAND NEW crossover SUV:

"When I say my man delivers, he delivers! Thank you is not even the work, there are no words. Even though I will be making the payments, I unfortunately could not get what I needed with my credit. So my man stepped in and made it all happen. Thank you so much baby, I'm in love!"

She posted a pic in her Lululemon leggings, golden goose shoes, with her iphone 13 pro max.

You can't make this stuff up.

I did not know what golden goose shoes were. So I looked them up… it was a gobsmacking (is that a word?) moment…

I didn't know what they were either. $600 for pre-scuffed shoes?? I spent $14 at Aldi for a similar pair, non-scuffed.

But I've never had to ask someone to sign a car loan for me, so I must be doing something right, if not doing it 'stylishly'. <shrug>

I didn't know what they were either, until DW showed me. It is crazy at this point in my life that there are still so many expensive brands like that that I didn't know existed. The crazy thing is her daughter wears them as well, which is insane to me knowing how quickly kids grow.

I am not even going to look up those shoes. My imagination says they are ridiculous, and I suspect in reality they are even worse. I’ll just stay judgmental without facts, my favorite state.

Whenever something like this comes up, I imagine it trending because hundreds of mustachians were looking it up to scoff. And I refuse to play the game.

Does that actually work? I thought only stopped email notifications. The thread will still be on the list of unread replies to your posts. It bothers one’s OCD.

Anytime I want a thread to stop showing up, I'll go through and delete all of my comments in the thread.

There are 174 pages to this thread.  I commented a couple of times *years* ago, I suppose I could search for it but it's ridiculous that this thread zombies for months and then someone comes along and adds a comment and it starts up again.

I'll try the unnotify and unsubscribe but I don't have high hopes.

Have you tried unplugging it and plugging it back in?
I was brushing my teeth as I caught up on this thread. Damn you, @dragoncar!

The shoes are not ridiculous at all, they look like old Converse all stars.
It's the price that is ridiculous, haha.

Not financial but sill

Alex: "Billy, how exactly have you lost your right to Free Speech?"
Billy:"Let’s see, too many times to recant here, the concise version: Being fact checked every time I post anything about <topic>, or share anything that conflicts with the MSM propaganda machine. #cancelculture"

I had not previously seen this in the wild, 'my freedom of speech is being infringed upon when I say something on a private platform and other people present evidence that conflicts with what I said'.

The private platform thing is what was generally left out in school “back in the day” since most of them didn’t exist.

The 1st amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

When did Facebook become the government?

There was some other basic logic problems with a few other things billy said in that thread.  Yeah and Facebook != Govt explicitly came up right beforehand.

Omg. Saw a gem on reddit yesterday. The original post was basically, is it possible to make it work on one income only? That in and of itself is lol, but the top comment, paraphrased -

' I know people who do it. They're VERY frugal (grow and can their own food, never eat out, no vacations, definitely not saving for retirement). It's a "whole lifestyle" to live on one income. I hate feeling strained and I want to retire in my 60s, and pay for summer camp, so both my partner & I work. '

I just...lol. I mean I guess it's a "whole lifestyle". It just cracks me up that it is incomprehensible to the OP that people live on one income without feeling strained financially. You think their brain would explode if I said I know people living on one income who are on track to retire decades earlier than in their 60s?

I mean, my family is single-income and we can some jam from our grapes and berries, but nothing else applies.

I'm taking "I hate feeling strained" as "I spend money without paying the slightest attention to where it's going", like somehow paying AT&T $200/mo for your phone is more calming than using Mint or something.

After saving over 50% of our pre-tax income for 20+ years, amassing enough to retire, and then deciding to continue working in our well-compensated jobs, we spend a little freely at times. But we still enjoy the coupons that come our way and work the sales for things whenever we can. You can actually do both!

Oh, heck no. It made me feel.guilty for spending a little extra to replace my balding tires even though I still had twice as much available in other categories. I am better off winging it, but then I have generally lived within my means. Even in college, some of my friends knew I could float them if they were waiting on income.

Well obviously it may be different for others. It's calming for me because I don't feel guilty about spending (quite the opposite because I can see the whole picture, not just spending) and it helped me get a handle on our finances 8 years ago.

I think merula was talking about mintmobile? They're a cheap mobile service provider. Mint budget tracking is cool too though :)

Haha. You are probably correct!  I saw the part about not paying attention to where one's money is going and assumed Mint was referring to the tracking software.

Well, in that case, sure. I love my $15/month phone plan! We pay more for DH now so that he can tether for remote work, but even then we realized that the 15GB plan gives you more hotspot data than the "unlimited" plan, so it isn't too bad.

I find Mint.com extremely stressful to use.  Maybe the wireless service isn’t as bad, but the financial tracking website is extremely difficult to use for tracking purposes, and is constantly telling me that i am losing money, even when i am not.

Are they at all related? Didn't mint.com get bought by Intuit and mint mobile is just a wrapper on the T-Mobile network?

No relation whatsoever. Just confusion when someone doesn't specify and mentions a phone bill and budgeting both as context.

No relation whatsoever. Just confusion when someone doesn't specify and mentions a phone bill and budgeting both as context.

Yes, Mint.com is the financial tracking website.  Mint mobile is a wireless service.  Different companies with similar names.  Usually people are referring to Mint.com in the context of spending.

I'm not sure what issues @lifeisshort123 is having, but I find Mint.com to be pretty good for tracking if you are willing to make some manual corrections/additions.  I don't find them to be overly burdensome, I'd rather do it than trying to track everything manually for me and my spouse.  It's just a matter of deleting duplicate transactions, adding some occasionally, and and I have a few accounts that wouldn't update unless I do a second level of security.

After the student loan forgiveness made the news, this was said by a 55 year old woman, unironically:

"After 34 years of paying on this, now I can finally start saving for retirement!"

FFS.  I'm guessing it was actually 34 years of not paying for it.

I’d be curious what the Reddit users who were responding viewed typical incomes.  One income of $40k would be quite difficult, $400k much less so.

My financial-train-wreck Facebook friend posted an inspirational poster looking quote that said something along the lines of “I will ignore anything that doesn’t get me closer to my goals this year”, followed almost immediately by another post of a picture of a new $50 Starbucks cup that’s coming out that they want.  I guess debt servitude is their ongoing goal.

Posted today on a buy/sell group…

Burberry classic coat for 5-year-old child. Original price over 5000 rmb (~USD$700). Now selling for 988 rmb (~USD$137).

In the pictures, the tag says the coat was made in Vietnam. Pretty sure it didn’t cost anywhere near $700 to make, or even anywhere $137 to make.

They were also selling four other coats for toddlers, all of which had been worn only a couple times by their kid, per the ad. Total original cost of the coats was ~USD$2000. For coats. For a toddler.

I spend a lot of time on Facebook Marketplace and see a lot of people that post exaggerated original prices to try to get more than something is worth, so I definitely take retail price claims with a grain of salt, but I’m pretty shocked to confirm that coat could indeed have cost that kind of money new.  Talk about diminishing returns on an item that will literally only have a few months of use before it’s outgrown.  For my kid, basic clothes like tee shirts and pants I usually buy new because they are cheap and finding used stuff in the right size that isn’t worn out in my area is more work and ends up being more costly than just ordering new, but higher cost seasonal items like jackets and snowsuits etc I try to buy good quality used ones because the cost savings is substantial

Apparently they are surviving.  Three new Starbucks cups in the last 24 hours though.  Made a special trip at 7am to make sure they would get them before they sold out on “release day”.  They must have like two full cupboards with just those cups at this point.  They aren’t actually a coworker, former classmate

Not on Facebook, but this is the closest thread I could find.

Ad seen today on Kijiji (Canadian version of Craigslist):  "Brand new dining table bought at [Fancypants High End Store], selling for $3900.00.  Table (looks like some sort of stone/glass) "was dropped on delivery and the corner chipped."  Shows barely visible roughening of corner.
"Now we have to buy a new one for $8000.00."  Choke.  I'm so tempted to reply with a link to MMM!

Wouldn't the delivery company be liable for making good the damage?

They should. I get stuff (cabinets, appliances) delivered to my jobsites.
I don't let the delivery crew leave until I've unpacked everything and inspected it for damage, and if it is damaged at all I refuse the delivery and back on the truck it goes.
The fine print on the delivery (in my case) states that if you don't do this the damaged item is yours and they are not responsible.

Who knows?  You would think that for such an expensive item, they would at least try.

My first thought was, "I wouldn't even pay $3900 for a brand new table, least of all one that has been dropped and chipped."

Personally I tend not to believe anything people say in the ads, much higher likelihood they bought it for $1500 from a wholesale liquidation place or auction that sells returned/damaged etc goods that are still sellable.  A quick look at their Kijiji profile that shows their other ads usually gives it away.  It’s also possible they did pay retail for it, decided they didn’t want it anymore and it just happens to have damage they they did to it and they think it reflects better on them if they blame the movers, even though that story makes no sense.

It actually seems legit.

I looked at the website for the store, and sure enough, there was the same table for $8400.00, ON SALE from over 11K!  Although it sells as a set with chairs, so I guess he had to buy more of those too!

The other ads from the same person are selling various swanky sunglasses for $100 - $425.  And get this:  a 2017 Mercedes-Benz G63 Brabus SUV for $185,000.  It's for sale because "the new one has arrived."  It's hard to know whether to laugh or cry.   Who is this person?

Wear some spy glasses and upload the video for our entertainment lol.  I still find a lot of people that sell luxury products online aren’t genuine consumers of those products and are instead flipping them.

I kind of have to know, you know?  I'm only a couple years younger than she is, so how do you actually pay for 34 years?  I mean, yeah, interest rates on my student loans were 8% and 10%, so that maybe didn't help her.  But wow...how much did she borrow?

Anyhoo...

I swear I just come back to this thread for these updates.
