For my data set, if you wouldn't mind: in the family that spent itself broke while on vacation, did you notice a great deal of addiction also?

I'm not sure about the boyfriend's family but with boyfriend: yes.  He is (thankfully) now and ex and addicted to nicotine and pain pills.  My sister is also addicted to nicotine and it may not be an addiction but she smokes weed every day as well.

I saw a friend from high school post a video about a summer camp for adults. I looked it up, apparently it was featured on Shark Tank and is a 3 day inclusive camp and rates are about $600 for it. I don't know if there are extras that are charged or what level of booze is provided (open bar at night), but it seems kinda silly...or perhaps brilliant?

I think it sounds fun.  I'm leaning more "brilliant" than "silly".  $600 is reasonable for an all-inclusive 3 days anywhere.  The best deals you get in Mexico for a decent place are ~$1k for 5 or 6 nights.

There's an actual 4-day rock and roll fantasy camp where they get performing artists from bands that have either broken up or stopped touring, and campers pay to come and jam out. The 4-day camp culminates in a live performance with these older celebrities who are looking to still make a buck through music. No telling what it costs, but I suppose being able to say: "Yeah, I played live with Judas Priest once" might carry bragging rights somewhere. Or not.

I'm not sure what it costs.

It wouldn't be so popular if it felt shitty for everyone. When I'm not juggling all these damn jobs, I have been known to pace myself and enjoy a mild buzz all day long - as long as it's in a safe, conducive environment.

I finally have something to add!

Granted, it might not really count.  This is a friend of mine who has a decent job and had paid off $100k in student loans in 10 years.  Granted, she has another $100k to go, which is a sick amount of debt for her job.  She says she wishes that she just let it go and spent the $100k on travel and wasted it.

I'll let you all draw your own conclusions.  I really like this person, and I get her frustration.  But, the problem isn't the government or the IRS.  It's that she ran up $200k in debt going to college.

We keep a kitchen thermometer around for checking the water temp for our coffee (if you're doing it the French press or cowboy method.) Ideal water temp is between 198-202 degrees. The machines can be so variable.
Thanks for the tip! I just give my boiling water 30 or 40 seconds to cool down but now I'll try measuring and see what I'm dealing with.
A few Christmases ago, I got a multi-temperature kettle from my parents. It does 70, 80, 90 and 100 and is totally awesome.

I'll never understand why people in Europe drink their coffee and tea so cold!

Europe has the metric system, not cold coffee.

That's funny, I don't recall hearing about that Liberian that walked on the moon....

It's also funny because NASA is now using the metric system. :P

I wish the US would switch. It'd be a painful transition but the end result would be far superior.

I'm really sick of hearing how the poor have it so good. That's bullshit and everyone knows it. If it was so awesome to be an unemployed single mother of 12, why not do it yourself?

Also, the fact that you're not getting a tax refund is a GOOD THING. It means you didn't give the government a no-interest loan. It means you got your withholding right.

And she's getting the benefit of above-the-line deductibility of student loan interest. No other debt gets that benefit.

Cry me a freaking river.

Here is a response from another friend, who went to the same college. Proof sarcasm was taught. The OP just didn't learn it.

She (OP) had an engineering degree and high-paying job to go with it. I have no idea why she can't figure out her own taxes or reason well enough to understand withholdings and stuff. She isn't stupid. At least not normally.

There are cat subscription boxes too. Half of it is stuff for your cat, the other half is cat related jewelry and such.

Why do I find this so very funny --is it that there truth in it -- e.g., people that would buy a cat subscription are the ones most likely to want cat jewelry and swag?

I think cats know when you buy something for them specifically, because they ignore it completely. My cat only plays with stuff like packaging materials, a plastic fork, or a paper bag.

yeah i had the crazy cat lady box for 3 months. the treats for the cats are pretty good. my cats wrecked the new years toys. one was like a champagne bottle shaped catnip toy with curled ribbons - that was the most exciting week of their lives when they first got it. i can't wait to rotate it back into their floor toys later.

I always find it amusing when people brag about their material possessions on social media. Funny, nobody ever posts their credit card bills or 401K statements though.

Can I take a detour to brag about my lack of material possessions? :) I am posting stuff on Craigslist to prepare for an upcoming move and sold my couch set last weekend. I have all of this empty space in the house where a couch and loveseat used to sit and it feels so freeing! I can't wait to sell the guest bed and mattress, space heater, and my old bike. Wheeeeee

For some reason, it seems more socially acceptable to brag about stuff than about money.

Off topic, but whenever I read "fungible" I think of mushrooms (Fungi) and how they are often one interconnected huge organism colony.   So one mushroom over here is really part of the the same mushroom over there.    Do you think that is where the term comes from?  (probably not).

I think etyology is cool!  I googled it --  no?
Fungible is from "medieval Latin fungibilis, from fungi ‘perform, enjoy,’"
Fungus is "from Latin, perhaps related to Greek spongos, sphongos (see sponge)."

I have friend's that posted about a new car purchase. Large dual cab ute brand new of course. This is on top of previous new car purchases * 2, a boat, extensive home renovations, 2 kids in private school, and living in Sydney just in the last few years. Love them to bits but my oh my hip pocket hurts for them every post they make.

Ignoring that engendering genders to colours is illogical and a very modern invention, this confuses me. 'Boy' colours tend to be neutral: red, black, blue, pink, green, etc...Perhaps if they had two prior girls and only had fluffly unicorn princess decorated strollers, I could grasp this but it is hard for me to imagine a 'boyly' carseat and stroller.

So wrong!  Teal is a mix of two obvious "boy colors" -- blue and green.  And the only acceptable colors for a girl are pink and purple.  Duh!  (/sarcasm)

I understand your feeling. But don't equate appearance with love. Someone who dresses up their kid MAY love them more, or they may view them as a fashion accessory.

Don't equate love with stuff.

Coincidentally ft/(slug*hogshead) is also the units for the linear density of a threads foam.

I remember in undergrad how my class was on the verge of a populist revolt when our professor had us do a thermodynamics homework assignment in imperial units. Good lord, what a mass of unnecessary confusion.

It feels like aerospace is the only holdout in engineering where we haven't fully converted to metric. It drives me nuts, especially when they mix systems, since you just can't get around the fact that fundamental science is only done in metric.

I had a imperial units thermodynamics problem appear on an exam, when up to that point I had only worked problems in metric.   So I converted all the input data to metric, solved it in metric, and then converted it all back to imperial

Now of course I work at a U.S. aerospace company, and haven't used metric anything in 10 years

Depending on where you work (government versus academia versus certain industries, etc.) a lot of people may secretly be using your first approach.

I was at a wildfire refresher where we were supposed to analyze what the fire was doing as it changed from one video clip to the next, and describe how we would modify our attack strategy.  I said, "It may be time for indirect attack, because while there's still no crowning, only some torching, the rate of spread has increased to almost 2 cubits/s."  I thought this very funny, though it induced a blank in the presenter, since rate of fire spread is still presented in a size-up as chains/hr.  You want archaic, we'll do archaic.
