I already setup my 2021 file. My problem is that I do my monthly updates the weekend after everything posts, ie the mortgage payment. And I highly doubt that's going to happen by Saturday.

Programmer mind: never spend 3 minutes doing something by hand if you can spend an entire day failing to automate it

Truth.  My spreadsheet is currently automated, but it's been a work in process for 5+ years now.

Yep!  I've got a Google Sheets spreadsheet that tracks my net worth in real-time based on current value of stocks, funds, etc.

With today’s record close, I might have hit a major NW milestone but my 401k won’t update until 6am tomorrow so I have to wait to check.

Since they normally pay every other Friday and their bank will be closed, a client “helpfully” paid their invoice a day early today rather than let it process through on the 4th... now my careful tax optimizations have been thrown off by having an extra two weeks of earnings in the year!

Copied my spending spreadsheet over for 2021.
Took about 3 minutes max, but i still feel like there must be a way to automate this through templates.

Programmer mind: never spend 3 minutes doing something by hand if you can spend an entire day failing to automate it

Madfientist did all that hard work so I don't have to.

Maybe you took the day off and didn't notice the check came in?   :)

Perhaps if it were still a paper check... I actually did take the whole week off so that would have been true.

It’s really a good problem to have!

Yeah, pop onto Facebook and complain that "people are sending me large sums of money faster than I want them to."

I bet you get LOTS of sympathy!  :)

Haha. My company also paid us a day early (presumably, I haven't actually checked yet) but they let us know a few months in advance so we were able to adjust our HSA/401k witholdings accordingly for the extra 2020 paycheck.

I hadn't really thought about that, but since they pay my invoices the same day they do payroll, it's probable that all of their employees had 27 pay periods this year. If any of them are mustachians trying to max out their 401k they probably had even more problems than I did.

Nah, any payroll system worth anything knows to do a hard cutoff when the contribution limit is hit, regardless of what the employee has elected. It'd be absolute madness otherwise.

DW accidentally went over the limit the second year we were married. We’d bumped her contribution to get the full max after getting married mid year and when we switched it  it took an additional pay period before they finished the paperwork and we didn’t catch it. They just sent her a letter explaining she’s over contributed and a small refund with the corrected w2.

The paycheck details haven't posted yet. Normally, they post 3-4 days prior to the first of the month. Not this month...

It's an MPP because I've now diverted my retirement contributions to a post-tax account, which allows me to do monthly in-service rollovers to my Roth at Fidelity. But since it's post-tax, I had to reduce the dollar amount I contribute by 1/3, since we're in the 24% Fed bracket, and 9.3% CA bracket.

I am now also back to paying FICA taxes, as I'd topped out in October 2020, so the past two months were much more cash in hand.

I want to update my spreadsheets!!

My company paid us early since Friday was a holiday.  I had already maxed my 401k so I missed out on company match for this pay period.

I'm at 19,334 with another pay period left so I'll miss out on a little of the match.

We update our investment tracking spreadsheet every 2-4 months. Just updated it on 12/31 to get an end-of-year view.

Are any of the rest of you looking at your numbers and thinking "What did I do wrong in this spreadsheet? This looks too good to be true."

I literally posted almost these exact words in my journal's EOY update yesterday.  My spreadsheet is so simple though, it's hard to know what could still be wrong after double and triple checking....

I thought we might reach one milestone, but I wasn't accounting for the astronomical growth of what in during the dip. We were much closer to the next milestone yet.

I have to wonder how much of the gains are due to the various stimulus/debt bills, to the tune of trillions of dollars.  I've been blessed to be able to continue working through the year, so those stimulus payments went straight into my Vanguard account.  And I wonder how much of the money was used to prop up businesses like restaurants that will eventually fail anyway because they can't operate normally.

Looks like I'm getting some stimulus money tomorrow. I'm in that small window where I get some but not all of the $600 due to 2019 income above 75k.  Can't complain but got a good laugh at receiving a whopping $49.35.

It's no secret that retail investors poured billions of dollars into the stock market over the last year. It turns out that if you send people home and take away their hobbies, they'll turn to stonks for entertainment.

My MPP is that I’m aiming to FIRE in 2021, but would like to max out my employer-sponsored tax-advantaged accounts before I go. Due to the early paycheck falling into tax year 2020, my 2021 payroll deductions are now pushed out by two weeks, which delays my retirement date.

Long-suffering sigh.

My MPP today is that I'm annoyed on behalf of my MIL that she spent money on Christmas gifts for us (which she wasn't even supposed to buy, as we had agreed, but she had to get us "just a little something") and they don't fit.  They're from Costco so I figured returns would be simple, but apparently she bought them like 10 months ago (what? why?) so without a receipt you only get credit for the last sale price, which was a whopping $4 for one item.  THEN I find out that the other item wasn't even bought at Costco in this country, but in the US last time she was there (see above re: 10 months ago).  So she spent probably $30 or so on items that are totally useless to us.  I know it's petty to be annoyed by something so minor and that was supposed to be a nice gesture but I just despise the waste of money. We agreed no gifts!  Stick to the plan!

Oh well.  The clothes might fit my BIL and SIL so we'll pass them on and hopefully it won't be a total waste.

A counselor told me once that the utility of the gift is not the point, and that I should focus on the intent behind the gift.

Don’t worry, I’d be irritated, too, while trying to remember and internalize my counselor’s advice.

My bonus, which I originally thought was going to post on Monday, actually posted on Friday, meaning that I missed out on buying at the 1.5% dip earlier this week. I guess the markets could still tumble today, but I. Am. Disappoint! I really wanted me some sweet, sweet serendipitous marketing timing. Pout.

I flew back today from my parents that live in the other end of the country. Due to a water saving device, that I got my parents to buy and my mother didn’t like so she gave it to me, they checked my hand luggage and realized it was to heavy. I normally fly only with handluggage and now especially because I wanted to spend as little time at the airport as possible. I have been flying the route for 20 years and often dreamed about loosing the luggage on my way to my parents so I can go shopping on the airline or travel insurance money because that is not applicable when you fly home. I either have hiking clothes or ski clothes in my luggage so some new clothes would be nice. Today, when there are very few flights they managed to loose my luggage on my way home. It was not even locked because I had not bothered to take the lock with me because I had not planned to check it in and I forgot that it had another lock that I am not using. And I got to spend extra time at the airport to fill in the papers about the bag!

Glad to know I'm not alone. My logical voice is frustrated by the waste and inefficiency, my emotional voice says to not be so ungrateful. Then the dissonance causes stress.
We're slowly making progress to get the family to default to food, chocolate is always accepted, but darn if we still don't get random trinkets thrown in.

The best one: weeks within doing a house purge, what shows up in the mail? A specialized loaf pan with a decorative shape with nooks and crannies that will be oh-so-fun to clean. "But it's functional!" "Yes, it has a purpose, but I already have 2 loaf pans. It will be a miracle if the mold releases and the top doesn't crumble to bits as soon as you take it out." Progress seems to come in many phases.

Dang, I feel frustrated just reading about it. So sorry you're having to deal with that debacle!
I've always wanted to get a job in the background of an airport to see how this stuff happens. There's gotta be a different way.

Trying to update my spreadsheet, go to grab the number for the 401k.... and it's in transition to the new management company. Which I don't have access to yet. So I've got a massive hole in my spreadsheet for the next 2 weeks.

Dang, I feel frustrated just reading about it. So sorry you're having to deal with that debacle!
I've always wanted to get a job in the background of an airport to see how this stuff happens. There's gotta be a different way.

My friend did all the odd jobs at a little airport. The pay is not great but you get to travel anywhere you want for free, even if you work part time. He did bag handling, ground crew, check in, gate agent, cleaned planes, everything. He dated someone who worked for TSA too, so I got to hear what ithat was like. It would be a good job for someone who is coast-fi and likes to travel.

I'm not sure why my brain is compelling me to write this, but that only happens at Costco if you're not the member who purchased the item, and you have no receipt. I just returned some sheets I purchased several months ago with no receipt. It was no hassle and I was refunded the price I paid. I hadn't opened them yet and they were on sale. I returned them and bought the same sheets for $20 less. The Kirkland 680 sheets are the bomb, btw. Best constructed bottom sheet I've ever seen, and I have a thing for nice sheets.

As to the fact that she bought whatever it was ten months ago while she was traveling, could you reframe it a bit? At least she didn't wait until the last minute to think of you, lol.

That's super neat :) We have a coworker who's SO works at the hospital part time just for that reason. Seems like a fantastic post FIRE opportunity.

Fair observation.  I was trying to return them myself because I don't want the angst from her of "oh no I'm so sorry I'm a terrible gift-giver" if I ask her to return them.  So yeah, if I gave her the one item back and she returned it she could get the full price back, you're right.  And yes, I know I'm contributing at least a bit by letting my feelings about her feelings prevent me from just getting her to return the thing.  It's a vicious cycle.

As for the 10 months ago complaint it's symptomatic of this thing she's starting to do where she just grabs stuff she sees while she's shopping thinking "so and so might like this!" and then it sits in a cupboard, forgotten, until she remembers it.  Like, both of us have had birthdays since the shopping trips where she got these items, so why not give them to us then?  I've had two separate grandmothers (one of them her own mother) who ended up with a house full of junk that she kept buying because it was there and on sale and then never used or gave to anyone.  Stuff like 20 pairs of gloves or 100 (no joke!) pairs of pantyhose.  When she does this kind of thing it makes me feel like she's going down the same road.  So, again, feelings.

Plus, especially with clothes things can change in 10 months!  People lose or gain weight, kids grow.  She bought some other clothes for my nieces throughout the year, and by the time Christmas came around some items almost didn't fit them anymore.

Anyways.  This is an MPP for a reason, it's silly and petty and just something that annoys me because I wouldn't do it so I'm venting here.  Life goes on.

^^Whoops, I wasn't calling you out, sorry if it felt that way.^^ I'm just a huge Costco fan girl.

As to the gift thing, I totally understand. A gift that reflects thought and caring is the best gift, no matter how humble it might be. Gifts that feel like checked boxes on someone's half-assed list just suck.

Oh, I didn't think you were calling me out, all good!  I'm a big Costco fan too.  Your comment just made me consider further why I was so annoyed and you got caught in the crossfire of my feelings-post.  :)

Ooh, I just thought of a really good one. My new job is even closer to my house and I get more time off, which means I won't get near as many bike miles this summer. Time to start going on bike rides for fun!!!

The horror!

We live a mile from my partner's office (it was 1.5 when we moved in, but then they switched him to another building). He bikes because he can't carry anything do to a back issue. Sometimes when we go on a bike ride, I make sure we grab his ID and then stop at his office on the way back and send him in for the free fizzy drinks. I don't even feel bad because he never drinks any when he is at work!

Oh I know that!
I miss the daily half mile walk to work. It's juuust the distance that you feel refreshed but not that you can feel it is a pressure on your time budget.

And now it's always half-dark when I end work so I don't have that much feeling for going out the door for fun.

To save money, I started making my own nut bars (like the imported KIND bars that go for $3/bar here in China). My recipe makes about 15 bars and should theoretically last us the week. My MPP is that they are so tasty that all members of the family eat multiple bars a day, and it’s only Tuesday and we are almost out of nut bars.

Recipe: https://www.godairyfree.org/recipes/homemade-kind-bars-chocolate-cherry

And...of course, like any baker, I’ve made substitutions based on what I had in my pantry and substantially changed the recipe, so I don’t actually know how the original version tastes. I made the following substitutions:

1. Replaced dried cherries with dried cranberries
2. Replaced brown rice cereal with sunflower seeds
3. Left out the chocolate chunks
4. Replaced brown rice syrup with honey and maple syrup
5. Replaced almond butter with peanut butter
6. Made a chocolate icing from cocoa powder, icing sugar, and milk to drizzle over the bars
7. Added 1/4 cup peanuts
8. Added a tablespoon of chia seeds for extra healthiness

But I kept everything else in the recipe the same! Hah!

We occasionally make home made bars like this and have the same issue, easily eat 3, 4, 5 bars in a day before the guilt sets in. ^^^ just need to triple the recipe and you will be set. I hypothesize that after a week or two of having as many bars as you want, the consumption will level off then fade to something more respectable. Only way to find out is to make all the bars (for science!).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
