Totally. You can see it peaked over $500K four different times, and over $600K twice. It taught me to have an iron stomach! Well, maybe 2008 taught me that.

I hope you are right that I'm still close to goal. We'll just have to wait and see though!

Yeah I mean it took an entire year for you to reach that mark of 500k and stay there for good. So 2022 was a year of patience i'm sure.

Pretty happy with this considering I just paid a ~$17,000 tax bill, plus all the closing costs on the new place. At the end of December I sold a lot of my investments to prepare for the home purchase, and at the beginning of February, I sold the remainder of my investments as I got spooked by tariffs and wasn't sure exactly how much I wanted to put down on my place. So got really lucky avoiding the crash.

Side gig income has considerably slowed down, but I'm still on track to making a few thousand from the side gig this month. This would have been a huge amount last year, but pales in comparison to what I was making from October-February.

Now I have $230K in cash, and my problem is getting the guts to re-enter the market. If I were to lump sum today, I would have avoided a 17% decline in my portfolio, but it could always fall further. I think I will slowly dollar cost average back in, but retain cash so that I can pay off my mortgage in 3-4 years using prepayment privileges (20% lump sum each year + 20% increase in mortgage payment - might slow down on this if investing starts to look more promising)

Credit card bills have been a little high as I just moved into my first home and I'm furnishing it. Glad to see I didn't dip this month. Slowly been dollar cost averaging back into the market.

I've got a $10,000 bill for an upcoming surgery that I will pay next week, so I expect to either dip or hold steady next month depending on how my online income does.

This is great to see the year progress and what can happen in just over a decade. A decade of hard work goes a long ways!

This is great to see. Let's me know I'm on the right path.

Thank you. I've been in this thread for over 4 years, so I'm on more of a scenic cruise than a race :). I'm happyish with my work-life balance this way, so it's all good. Couldn't imagine all those years ago when I had 9k in credit card debt I'd ever be getting close to being a millionaire.

Thank you. I've been in this thread for over 4 years, so I'm on more of a scenic cruise than a race :). I'm happyish with my work-life balance this way, so it's all good. Couldn't imagine all those years ago when I had 9k in credit card debt I'd ever be getting close to being a millionaire.

@SpareChange Interesting... now I see you have been in this for 4 years. Still a nice scenic cruise given how big the numbers are. This is my favorite race to watch since I can see all the years of progress and work. It's just numbers in a table but there is a whole story behind that. Like your case of being in credit card debt to being close to that mil mark! That will be a great day to celebrate.

Is a mil your finish line? Or are you planning to go beyond that?

I have no particular number in mind at this point. I passed what I consider to be FI territory just over a year ago. I'm a bit SWAMI. I'm in a good career, like my dept a lot, feel respected and valued, and make decent money. Being PT with benefits and a huge PTO bank, I've generally been successful in turning my job into what mostly feels like a paid hobby. It's nice to be able to pull the ripcord at any time though. :)

What's your game plan JP?

That's a good place to be at... technically FI but able to keep working because you like it and can contribute.

My game plan is in the short term to work multiple jobs to try to get to 400k in about a year if the market holds up. Beyond that I kind of feel for a guy like me if I get to 600 or 700k about about coast FI or pretty close to done and could take a sabbatical or something.

I could see myself doing what you are doing... I have to say I like my current job and could see myself working post FI. The main thing I really want is to be fully remote so I can live where I want - including overseas. If I get that I won't be in such a hurry to save as much as possible and work multiple jobs. So the remote work is becoming more important to me than making more money. So I think when I'm up for promotion to a mid level software dev where I'm at now I'm going to ask for remote and turn down more money.

I guess that would be the plan.

Not a bad plan. And I might be jealous if you go remote. :). Not an option in my career.

Reporting early, as I have a surgery scheduled for the beginning of June and will probably be too focused on that to do the update. With the surgery comes extra costs, plus no salary for 3 months, and I have instalments starting on my taxes come September. If my side gig income maintains, I may be able to maintain where I'm at until September.

I'm continuing to dollar cost averaging back into the market as well, after withdrawing everything prior to my house purchase.

JP what set up are you going to create in your mobile agile minimalist home to be able to work remotely?  Putting a nice rig in there might be challenging.  I guess there are always nice parks and with Starlink you could work anywhere on a nice laptop.  I have seen a Sprinter Van or two that would make an ideal mobile mr. money mustache II machine.  As always, cheering on your incredible drive to get there!

@lcmac32

If I could get the fully remote work I think I would have an apartment/condo/house overseas in Asia or possibly Latin America. It would be fairly modest and affordable and this would be "home".

I would also go stay with my parents for 3 months out of the year to get a lot of time with them. I'd have an office in my bedroom I grew up in and stay there.

I have thought about the mobile on wheels set up with starlink... I would definitely need to get a van of some sort to have a desk and a wide screen monitor.

But... If I have the assets I want and the remote work I want I think I would rather just live overseas and then on my vacation time do some overlanding in a Toyota 4 Runner or something and not work and live out of a vehicle.

The vehicle living is okay and I've adapted... it's already been a year. But I don't think I want to do this full time when I really have a lot of money.

Guess we'll see though

@J.P. MoreGains - Here is someone who has the rig you could use https://www.youtube.com/c/TTTHEFINEPRINTTT

Another option could be side gig caregiving overseas.  In New Zealand, I have an elderly relative who is being cared for by a brother-in-law (not a ton of work - a little cleaning, grocery shopping, occasional dr.'s appt., but at least some contact everyday) and he gets paid for it.  If you could get that arrangement and live in, you have the side gig + room and maybe some board.   Just another option on the many ways to make it happen.  I am sure there are other ways as well such as teach English in Korea and arrange remote tech work around that.  I am sure being single helps with the ease with which to do it.  (side note - I highly recommend marriage and kids, it has all been worth it (with some confirmation bias on my part).

Retirement investments only counted for this race.

Beginning of each year:

2020 $250,000.00

2023 $326,467.26

2024 $398,689.50

2025 $595,898.53

  Jan $607,329.29
  Feb $550,222.00
  Mar $528,668.86
  Apr $585,842.87
  May $620,247.13

Some gains back from my ATH of ~$650k.  Would like to get north of $700k by EOY.

Added 2017. That was the year I first set a networth goal. Soon I'll have 10 years worth of data and I'm anxious to see what 10 years will bring.

@solon - If you don't mind sharing, what created the big jump in late -2024.  House sale; inheritance, deft stock play, etc.  In any event, I would love to make that kind of jump in the next year or two as well.  Well done!

I inherited a house and sold it - made $170k. The rest was market gains and new contributions.

I used to be a little bit envious of people who got an inheritance. Now that I've been through it, I can honestly say I don't recommend it.

I kind of think it's okay if you have also gone out into the world and earned some money and made it on your own and understand the value of a buck.

When I first moved out to California after I graduated from college I lived with my Mom's uncle who never had kids, his wife had passed, and he was SUPER frugal because he grew up in the depression. He never owned a car, never bought things in general but was one of the greatest men I've ever known. Anyway he grew up in San Diego near the beach pre war and owned property. He retired from the Navy in the 60s and kept working through the 80s. He had to have been worth a couple to several mil...

Point is that let's say that if he were to have given me money it would've ruined me. I was a knucklehead when I was younger. It's better that I stayed broke and have had to work my way out of my problem now in my 40s. It's forced me to grow up, delay gratification, work hard, make sacrifices, etc. This journey is about a lot more than the money.

Back to the topic of California... I have a friend that just passed away in his mid 60s. He was from one of the founding families out in California that have geographic things on maps named after them. He inherited a bunch of property when his mom died say 5-10 years ago. He just died which his sad so it is all going to a trust to his son in his early 20s... My other friend and I talk about this and about how dangerous a situation this is. The kid will never have to work and make it since he has a trust and gets paid a lot yearly.

For some people they can handle this... for others they can't. So who knows how it would turn out.

But... having to work and build your own finances and retirement builds a lot of character I think. As crazy as it sounds I'm glad I don't just have a ton of money without working for it. After I hit FI I'll know I'll have earned it.

@solon and @J.P. MoreGains - Thanks for both responses.  I do agree it is not good to receive the money at an age where one is not yet responsible enough for it.  Too much money too soon can ruin people.  My youngest son, made $500k one year as a 22 year old.  He worked hard for it, but paid a price too.  Also, he got the idea that money is easy to come by and was not as frugal as he was taught by his parents.  Fortunately, he still has a lot put back (for someone his age).  I literally told him to invest in all and live poor now.  He just wouldn't listen.  Eventually, I had an epiphany for him.  Go ahead and get those toys you want.  You need to get this out of your system, learn the lesson sooner rather than later, that money doesn't grow on trees.  He is now in the desert of money making (he has a political canvassing company).  He is now back in university and working retail.  He may get another canvassing contract in 2026, but now has a greater appreciation and says he will buy a house cash if he makes it like that again.

I think that inheriting something as an older person from your parents is not bad.  It is a legacy of a life usually well spent that leaves a surplus to children.  I have told my own mother on many occasions to spend her money now before she goes and she has done some of that.  A Disney cruise with my family was one of them, and she said she was so glad she did that.  She still talks about it.  I have found it is best to plan for your own FIRE and focus on what you can do.  If some windfall comes later, I for one will be grateful.  I think usually the older children of parents that have a inheritance to give to them, are usually well on there way to FIRE b/c the habits and patterns of the parents do at some level get passed on.

Wow this is incredible! 500k at 22! I bet when he earns a lot more he'll save and buy that house. Sounds like he'll be very successful and just fine.
