Didn't find this one yet, and I keep hearing how the next half-mil goes so much faster! We'll see. Anyone else?

April 2016: 500k

Saving ~75% of income.

Checking out of here. Made it on a single salary that never topped six figures, it's possible.

Happy Holidays all!

7/1/19 $255k LNW / $780 TNW
6/3/19 $242k LNW / $765 TNW
5/2/19 $242k LNW / $764 TNW
4/1/19 $236k LNW / $756 TNW

12/31/19 $296,096 LNW / $833,129

This amazes me.  Mid-year, I got a promotion and salary increase to $82k (so less than that for partial year).  Since 1/1/19, my LNW has increased $101,662.  Our first home is now a rental and our current home has 2 rent paying roommates, so there's more going on than just my salary, but that still blows my mind.  My net worth increased in 365 days by 24% more than my day job pays.

05/19 - $547,963               $811,636
06/19 - $588,500               $853,525
07/19 - $601,555               $867,945
08/19 - $594,550               $862,292

12/19 - $669,819              $943,739

This has been a crazy, crazy year.  It's more than made up for the crappy end of last year!!

My list is too long so I will abbreviate going forward.

12/16 - $360,891     $570,338
12/17 - $473,407     $697,411
12/18 - $480,550     $732,108
12/19 - $669,819     $943,739

In the middle of 2016, I decided I needed a route out of my job.  My husband and I cut spending some but what we really did was start paying attention and being strategic with our money.  In 3 years, we've increased our investments by ~$300,000!  Half contributions, half market gains.  We've been super lucky that the market went crazy at the same time that we started saving. 18 more months for us!!

2019 was a wild ride. We bought a beautiful home (that probably pushes FIRE back 3-4 years simply because after we hit our number we want to pay it off in full)

Just shy of $800,000 NW. $624,000 of that is pure liquid assets.

From Dec to Dec we are up $218k, which feels insane, but last year we were only up $46k due to the year end slump in the market. So I view this as almost 2 years of gain in one.

If the market is ANYTHING like it was this year (Unlikely, I know) we would graduate this thread in 2020. Though, if returns are flat, more likely 2021.

It is crazy to think I have been logging this on here for 4 (FOUR!) YEARS now. Having gone from 250k to 800k in that time. Not too shabby, maybe slower than some here, but I am happy with the results.

Here is to a great 2020 guys/gals!

What a monster year. Feeling a little more firmly over the $500k line now. A 68% savings rate for the year and hoping to up that to at least 75% in 2020. Happy New Year all.

12/31/19: $524k
11/30/19: $496k
...
12/31/18: $318k

Dec 2019: $1,030,547 (+$31,437)

Well, that's a wrap. End of the year / decade and we broke $1 Mio! Total NW increase for 2019 was a staggering $311,937 thanks to Dec 2018's market decline. Moving on to the Race to $2 Mio thread...wishing all of you the best of luck.

Congrats!

From Dec to Dec we are up $218k, which feels insane, but last year we were only up $46k due to the year end slump in the market. So I view this as almost 2 years of gain in one.
We had a similar year and I feel the same about it being like two years of gains in one. Looking at the average of 2018 and 2019 it almost feels "normal".

A little tardy to joining this race, but better late than never.

March 2019 = $514k
Dec 2019 = $610k

I turned 35 this year. Not bad for someone who probably had a $20k net worth at 25 and didn't find MMM until 30. Still on pace to part-time it by my mid-40s.

End-of-year update on the goal to Investments = $1M.
We've slowed down since we've bought a new house, took money out of the investments account for a downpayment, and start a major remodel also using money from our investments. Meanwhile, we are carrying our current house too until we can move into the new one and sell the old.

date         NW        Investments
4/3/14     $430k         $225k
9/19/14    $500k         $275k
11/6/14    $550k         $300K
5/9/15     $600k         $341k
4/13/16    $650k         $375k
9/7/16     $700k         $410k
5/6/17     $750k         $674k (*I think I lost history on one of our accounts prior to this)
9/9/17     $800k         $717k
11/22/17   Assets hit $1M
12/15/17   $850k         $770K
3/10/18    $900k         $770k (refinanced house, put $ in and moved from 30 to 15 yrs)
6/16/18    $950k         $818k
12/26/18   $900k         $750k
1/10/19    $950k         $803k
2/19/19    $1M !!!       $856k
6/12/19    $1.05M        $900k
10/9/19    $1.08M        $895k (downpayment on house and market misery)
12/31/19   $1.16M        $974k

I don't belong to this thread yet, but have been creepily lurking. I hear people saying 500k is the milestone after which you start to see crazy gains, can anyone comment on their experience with this?
Just squeaked in at $502k on 4/1/19 so I'm hoping you're right haha. So we'll see how the progress goes from here.
The gains have definitely exceeded my expectations as we're past 600k now, less than a year since hitting 500k.

Correcting error in previous post. Forgot to include December paycheck!
cash+rental equity   add primary residence equity
1/2016      $507K                 $627K
1/2017      $625K                 $797K
9/2017      $784K                 $904K
12/2017    $762K                 $903K  begin remodeling primary residence
3/2018     $725K                  $866K
6/2018     $763K                  $910K  Zillow values for rental properties went way up
9/2018     $830K                  $945K
12/2018   $821K                  $964K
3/2019     $833K                  $977K  Rental house is on the market.
6/2019     $820K                  $953K  Had to buy a roof for the rental house. It now is under contract, though.
9/2019     $832K                  $977K  Closed on the rental house!
12/2019   $818K                  $965K  Passed final inspection on our remodel. Paying off 0% CC bills. Installing solar panels on a rental. Upward trajectory should resume at the next update. But if we use the Nextdoor valuation for the primary residence, then we're at $1,031K for the second number right now. Pretend numbers. Not selling.

Adding in monthly updates for this home stretch for the TNW including home equity! Will go back to quarterly updates for the cash and rental equity goal.

1/2020     $836K              $996K       It's been a good month for real estate valuations even outside of Nextdoor. And the mutual funds also had a good month.

1MM dates      3/2022            2/2020 or maybe 3/2020

Nice movement based on the great market in 2019.  Had to replace a totaled car so pulled out about $6K in the last two months but still good growth.  I also am still including the kids college savings which has now been moved to a savings account so less growth will happen in that account and may slow things in 2020 and beyond and obviously withdrawals for tuition will hit net worth, but as these funds not consumed would return to our stash figured it best to leave them in rather than take them out.

How is everyone positioned for 2020?   I'm always thinking of ways to optimize my portfolio, and want to share an amazing investment vehicle not many consider for whatever reason (according to WSJ), and that is the Health Savings Account if you are enrolled in a qualifying high-deductible health insurance plan. This account has triple tax benefits, and can be an amazing addition to your retirement accounts, as a HSA also does not require minimum distributions once you reach retirement age.  I'll post additional details and personal tips soon on how to optimize your HSA.

I have been aware of this strategy but have not utilized it yet.  Not at a point where I can fund to that level.

Awesome - knowledge is half the battle.  I think folks should strongly consider increasing the priority of investing in a HSA if available to them, versus doing it as an afterthought.  For example, contribute to the 401K up to the amount that the employer will match, then consider contributing to a HSA.

This is already suggested in the sticky Investment Order post. The Mad Fientist post is very good reading on this subject as well.

This is my 3rd year in a row maxing out my HSA. I immediately transfer it from my HSA account into my TDAmeritrade acct and invest the money. This year, Iím having $3550 (half) taken out of each of my first two January paychecks. The first one hit my investment account today.

Congrats to Yellowcat for hitting the 1M mark, hope to see you over in that thread sooner than later.  Keep up the great work everyone, just gotta keep plugging away at it.

But don't forget to live today as well, tomorrow is never promised - As I have learned by saying good bye to several friends this year and a couple more found out they have cancer.

Jan 2017  $275k
Jan 2018 $356k
Jan 2019 $447k
Jan 2020 $559k (433 liquid + 126 prop)

I'm here from the last thread. I'm not quite sure when we crossed the 500k mark last year as it's been absolutely whirlwind for us, but the nice thing of set it and forget it is that it works when you're not paying attention!

How is everyone positioned for 2020?

I'm probably the weird one since after years of frontloading everything, this year we're moving right now and so we're doing minimums for retirement to cashflow some excess expenses and then will backload things once we're settled.

Same as 2019...and 2018 and 2017 and 2016........  Index funds make things pretty standard.  Until the stock market ceases to exist I will likely stay positioned in much the same way.  Perhaps several years after I hit FIRE I might need to readjust.

Life happens and we have to adjust accordingly!  I've done this too in years past.
