@caracarn I'm on book 11 now.  I have to take a breath after a couple of days and read something else.  Looking forward to the Last Battle.

12/31/20: 813k

@caracarn I'm still on book 11 now lol.  Looking forward to seeing Sanderson's take on it, hopefully a little less smoothing of skirts and clutching of braids and boxing of ears and some more movement.

And 2020 is done, my net worth exploded this year and I can't be grateful enough. Keeping my job combined with being able to save like this has shaved years off my original estimates of FIRE.

This month I saved $129,013 and went up by $137,387.

This year my net worth went up a staggering $410,734... which is more than double what it was.

This is also the year I changed my mind about charitable giving. I had planned on accumulating until I was done and then allotting an amount to charities after that. Now, I've decided to donate at least 1% of my net worth a year while I'm still accumulating, and then re-assess if / when I'm FIRE. This year that meant over $8000 split between three charities recommended by GiveWell (through RC Forward). This will slow me down, but not that much, and helping even a little bit makes me feel better about all the privileges that got me here.

Only tracking personal liquid stash and do not include my wife's savings or any Real Estate equity at this point

Bonus time! 100% of it was split 50/50 between VTSAX and VTIAX to bring up my international allocation a little.

I've got a slim chance of breaking $1M invested in 2021 if the markets continue to perform like they did the last 6 months!

I am in complete awe of your growth rate!  From approx. $68k to approx. $706k in 3.75 years?!?!  Amazing!

As are we, it is pretty unreal looking back! We are very fortunate and have the following contributing factors:

  • DINKs in a MCOL area
  • 70% savings rate, we still live about like we did when I made less than half of what I do now and DW was in school earning peanuts
  • I've somehow managed to earn much more than I ever thought I would, going from 45k right out of college to 160k now (9 years later)
  • DW is in healthcare and finished her doctorate level training in 2017 and earns ~130k
  • Pay $0/month for a high deductable health plan and have no major medical issues
  • Lucked out with some real estate purchased in 2012 and sold in 2017 allowing us to pay off all student loans of ~120k
  • Max out all tax-advantaged space $65k+ plus generous employer matches
  • Purchased mostly VTSAX throughout the last couple of dips and never have sold

Man, you guys better have a baby quick or you're not going to know what to do with all the money you will have.

I graduated the race to 500k last month, so this is my first month with you all!  I think this one will be a bit more of a meander than a race for me as I may take a sabbatical along the way.

I'm in disbelief of 2020.  What an insane year in so many aspects.... I kept throwing money into the market through the crash and the rebound has been insane.  Expecting to see some much lighter gains in 2021 but who knows.  Might hit that double comma club sooner than expected.

And its goodbye to the roller coaster that was 2020! All things considered, for those that buy and hold, people have done very well. On January 1st I forecast that we'd be around £720k at the end of the year using assumptions about contributions and growth.

Be interesting to start a thread where we all guess where we think we'll be on 31st December 2021.

Yes, start it please! AND maybe give tips for using "assumptions about contributions and growth." Because I have no idea how to guess mine!

But Q3 and Q4 were also huge. And... I have been unemployed since 9/15 (furloughed) but our spending rarely exceeds our much more modest income right now.

Holy shit, this has been a good year for me, despite being a dumpster fire of a year overall. If I include my wife's NW (~360k) - we're millionaires, apparently? Goddamn. For the sake of consistency though I'll be sticking around in this thread until only my NW is at $1M.

(I only track my retirement and not my wife's- we both have separate tracking spreadsheets that we maintained separately from before we were married, and although we do have joint finances we still track individually, frankly because we haven't had a compelling reason to re-do our spreadsheets to combine them.)

GOALS FOR 2021 -
  • We have our first kid due in July, so not really sure how that's going to affect finances. My wife and I have committed to only buying secondhand for anything we buy for the kid's arrival, both for financial and environmental reasons.
  • If feasible (see above), invest more in my Mega Backdoor Roth- this year I maxed out my traditional 401k and contributed about $7500 into the MBR, I'd like to see if I can hit $10k contributed for 2021
  • We downsized to 1 car mid-pandemic as we're both WFH. I'd like to keep the status quo post-COVID and not have to buy another car, which means more biking/public transportation this year!

$991,000- Posted on March 12 right before the huge crash. Didn't think we would ever get to $1 mil due to being furloughed.
$1,007,000- Posted on May 26th. First time we realized we passed $1 mil. Got lucky because I reallocated most of our investments to bonds and started moving the funds back to Index slowly.
$1,050,000- As of Aug 11th. Thank God we have about 80% of our investments back in Index during this run up. Who knew with our economy in shamble that the SP is almost back to its high.

We have roughly about $325k our of $395k back in Indexes. That's 82%.
We have another $65k of cash that I would love to go toward Indexes but the market is a bit scary right now.
LOL, I'm still https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/ftp.giffurloughed and collecting UE. What a great year this could have been with my wife making $50k and myself $120k.
Can't complain. Enjoying the extended layoff.

I found an older 3/28 spreadsheet that showed more exact numbers.
Its been a crazy 5 months. I don't think 1 single person would have guessed that in AUG 2020 the SP500 would pass its previous high already
I'm not gonna lie. I had a lot of my investments on the sideline and were slowing moving them back. I had a bunch of cash too that I would have dumped into Index but I didn't think the SP would regain all its losses that quickly.
Also had to spend $8K fixing the roof and various stuff on the rental.
Can't complain though. Been furloughed from a $120k job since 3/19.

This thread is my record keeping. LOL.

Sorry I keep quoting myself for record keeping and have no desire to hit $2 millions.
A great day in the market and we surpassed $1,100,000. Still a big shocked as I haven't worked since March.
Our investments are basically $400K in Vanguard and 2 paid-off houses we're getting income from.
We've hit a mark where we are comfortable with so I started hedging our investments.
I pulled $50k out of the $400k today and will pull another $50k if the market goes up again tomorrow.
Basically, if the market keeps going up, we still have $300k and if it drops enough, we have plenty of money to dump back into the market.

Hmm looking at my account balance history, it was a combination of:
  • A dip in VTSAX right around Nov 1, and I report on the first of each month
  • I had a round of ESPP shares in my company stock that vested in mid-November, which was about $15k by itself
  • Thanks to a good earnings call, about a 30% increase in said company stock from Nov 1 through December 1

An incredible year in so many ways, in March if you asked me would we be £130k+ up I would have said not a chance.  December being our biggest gain in our lives at £42k in a single month.  I am LOLing just typing that!!!  42 grand in a month?!!?

Interestingly also puts us clear of $1M USD... just for the giggles.  But alas I dont live in the USA!  So another 200 odd thousand to go!

Our estimated FIRE date is still late 2022.  Head down now and I finally feel like we are on the home stretch.  It would not shock me if things slowed down now, IME if you get a big rise in the markets you sometimes see a bit of deflation for a few months - lets see.

Hello all! I'm coming to join ya'll here on this journey, having recently crossed the threshold. As my current FI number is a bit less than the goal, I may not graduate from here, but maybe I'll end up with a OMY or two and end up finishing off this race as well.

Starting at:
1 January 2021 - $502,810

So I do the "total worth" a little different from many, but I know it's the same used by some people. I do not count my house as an asset, but I do count the mortgage as a liability, so the big drop in 2017 was because I bought a house, for example. With any luck, 2021 is the year I pay off my house as well as push over $900k, then with any continued luck and, well, basically no need for stock market gains in 2022 at all I should hit $1M late in 2022.

We'll see, of course, since there's also every possibility that the inflation we're hearing about won't happen but massive economic problems and market devaluation could certainly happen. At least at this time though it's been quite a rocketship ride the last couple years. I'm thankful for this community and seeing so many people of varying income levels making progress. At times having nothing but some numbers in a spreadsheet and dreams of the future are hard to really understand but then I see the people in this thread who've "graduated" past their $1M goal and it's a reminder that progress is still progress and I'll get there some day.

My end goal is something like $1.25 - $1.5M depending on how old I am when reaching that goal (I'm already in my mid 40s) so for example if it takes until I'm 52 to reach $1.25M then that's probably plenty good enough, whereas if I magically hit $1.5M at 48 then that too is plenty. I just don't think we're going to have another doubling of the stock market in the next few years, ha.

Good month of growth, largely thanks to the stock market and also because it was a 3 paycheck month instead of the standard 2 paychecks. Overall, my income was fantastic in 2020, but my spending was absolutely wretched. Couple new vehicles, and just a lot of other “stuff.” Spending in 2021 should be a lot better, and overall my growth for 2020 was still great.

I had 3 interviews and a job offer a week and a half ago. We’re currently working negotiations which have been a bit slow due to the holidays. I have a great job that I love with coworkers that are the best ever, but I’m a contractor with a project looking to end in August and unless the company picks up any more big projects between then, I’ll be laid off. This new project i’d come on as a contractor for a 2 year project, but would be replacing the manager of the division who is retiring after 30 years. It would likely eventually turn into a full time gig. We’ll see what happens. Likely a small pay/benefit reduction but with a longer job duration.

Welcome @jlcnuke!  You never know, you may end up graduating even if you RE.  I never expected to graduate either (I pulled the plug when we hit our $750k FI number), but the stash has grown and it looks like it might cross the $1m mark, which is really cool.

We made it! Technically a few weeks ago. I assume it will be at least some time until we are solidly in 7 figures, but it feels good...

It's been awhile and times have been strange but we keep chugging along, with a steady upward trajectory:

Aug 2020 - $915k
Sep 2019 - $780k
Sep 2018 - $656k
Sep 2017 - $538k
Sep 2016 - $330k

December's number is $820k! Still think we're looking at 2021 but the last few months have been productive.

A year has passed and we move slowly upward (other than this month, anyway, we bought a van):

Oct 2019 - $770k
Sep 2019 - $780k
Jul 2019 - $766k
Apr 2019 - $739k
Oct 2018 - $666k
Sep 2018 - $656k
July 2018 - $651k
June 2018 - $634k
May 2018 - $624k
Apr 2018 - $612k
Mar 2018 - $599k
Feb 2018 - $590k
Jan 2018 - $580k
Dec 2017 - $569k
Nov 2017 - $561k
Oct 2017 - $546k
Sep 2017 - $538k
Aug 2017 - $497k
July 2017 - $483k
Jun 2017 - $479k
May 2017 - $454k
Apr 2017 - $448k
Mar 2017 - $435k
Feb 2017 - $433k
Jan 2017 - $410k
Oct 2016 - $370k
Sep 2016 - $330k

Hoping to get to a mill by 2021!

January 2017 - $303,195
March 2017 - $333,323
April 2017 - $340,884
May 2017 - $346,568
June 2017 - $357,230
July 2017 - $365,912
August 2017 - $370,689
September 2017 - $380,412

May 2019 - $623013
August 2019 - $681260
November 2020 - $856576
December 2020 - $887822

Nice market uptake - good bonus and dividends. $112288 to go - going have to push to get it to the mil by end of 2021

Technically I have made it as the share given me 3 years ago pumped from a strike price of 12 to 170 but I am not counting it in - they will be my FIRE bonus!

Happy new Year

November 11, 2020:  $527,000
December 11, 2020:  $607,796 (501,797 euros). This month's total is more accurate than last month's, because I actually did the euro conversions and the math with a calculator instead of just spitballing it.  I STILL don't have an answer from the government about how much taxes they want for 2019, but I don't think it's going to bust my butt back down under 500K DOLLARS.

Thanks to a previous mathematical error on my part, a good stock market (for now), the resolution of my tax situation, and clients paying before year-end, I've rocketed past 500K in both euros and dollars, so drum roll please:

January 4, 2020:  564,565 in euros/692,608 in dollars.

The dollar is just limping along and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some improvement in 2021 but am not optimistic on that front.  Next stop 750K in dollars because that'll mean I'm halfway through this stage.  Will have to have a good year for that to happen.

Much better year for the markets then I originally expected.  Will be dropping down to once income in 2021 so progress will slow but hopefully the markets will continue to do the heavy lifting.

Not sure when/if I'll get to 1m; may semi-FIRE before then.
If the market were to stay flat, would probably hit 1m investible around 6 months from now.
Not declaring victory yet though until I have 1m investible and no debt to the bank.
Net worth is clearly north of $1m now, and we even have more than $1m invested/investible, but still not debt free
So, net worth hits $1.5m for the first time.
Net worth drops back down to where it was 6 months ago.
Down 9.3% from peak
Liquidity down, home equity up, debt down, savings rate 0% so totally reliant on market returns to get back above 1m in investible/invested assets.
So at this point my savings rate is still stuck at 0%, house will soon be paid off, and still reliant on market returns.
Saved $0 since last update; all increases are from market returns.

Just like last year, no new savings; market returns only + some tailwind from exchange rate changes. So we're over 1M liquid now, which means we can graduate from this thread, I think. If the markets crash, we'll be back.

Just crossed over $500k for the stache this past month, so I'll jump in on the race.

Started tracking:
Jan 16: $181.2k

Feb 19: $532.8k

Update to April 1st. $546.25k

Update to October 1st: $620.15k

Feb 1. 20: $710.5k
March 1 20: $685.7k
Apr 1 20: $605.9k
May 1 20: $693.4k

June 1 20: $724.5k

Back up for the year (of course this counts a decent chunk of contributions too).

Aug 1 20: $789.1k

Dec 1 20: $969.9k

Jan 1 21: $996k

4k to go! I have a stock grant that vests in March that's worth approximately $20k, but I refuse to count that until it actually vests :)

I started at $181k 5 years ago. Crazy how far you can come when you actually focus on something.

I was kind of curious about our lifetime earnings compared to our NW. I got my first full time job in the fall of 2012, before that I was interning and going to grad school earning basically enough to pay the bills. My wife was working at a grocery store during the time I was in grad school. Part time from about 2005 until 2009 and then full time from 2009 until 2011. Her top pay was her last year and it was about $32k. So for all intents and purposes we weren't saving anything until 2012 when I got my first full time job and she got a job at similar pay of about $35k/yr. If you factor in our lifetime earnings between the two of us it's approximately $1.7 million. But if you ignore all the earnings before 2012 when we were just making enough to live (and frankly a large proportion of those earnings were from when we were in HS and College working part time jobs). We've earned $1.5 million from 2012 through 2020 and our NW is approximately $1.24 million. That really shows me the power of saving and investing.

Farewell 500 to 1M thread.  I must be moving along now.  It's a well-traveled path, easy to follow, I'll see you on ahead!

01/1/2019 $194k LNW / $744k TNW
12/1/2019 $287k LNW / $822k TNW
12/1/2020 $499k LNW / $1,145k TNW
01/1/2021 $532k LNW / $1,232k TNW

Feels weird to move along until the liquid value goes to 7, so here's year end update.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
