Since I'm already posting combined inherited amounts in the next thread, I was planning to stop posting here at year end, regardless of whether or not my original accounts made it to the finish line.  If you'd asked me in January if I thought it would happen this fast, I'd have said no.

Congrats to Dogastrophe as well!  And to all the new members in the thread the last few months!  This is the stage when your little green soldiers really start to pick up steam.  (Usually.  Last year wasn't as fun as this year, but it laid the groundwork for the growth we see now.)

Edit to update ESPP amounts due to overnight ESPP share deposit which is dated 31 July.

7/1/2023    $799,801.60
8/1/2023    $815,425.65

Crossed the $800k threshold. Temporarily we're spending more than we're earning. Wife's mom is in the hospital across the country, so she's over there with other family. Doesn't look too good but we're praying MIL turns positive. Financially that meant an expensive last minute flight, plus hotel and food. We also just came back from a planned vacation in which we spent too much.

Plus the new roof is going on soon, luckily we got hit with hail a month or two ago so it's only costing me a $2k deductible.

School is starting up for the oldest so that means tuition bills again.

Despite all that, I think we have a very small chance to hit $900k before the end of the year, and we're likely to hit $1MM next year in the 2nd half of 2024.

Prayers for your mother-in-law.  Having the financial freedom to be there for loved ones is a big advantage to being on the FIRE journey.

Congrats to all the newcomers to this thread, and also to those moving on to the next.

I think I'm going to take a peek at the next thread.  Not sure if they'll let me join, when they see I'm driving a 15 year old truck with 225,000 miles on it.

Nice gains from last month. Would be crazy to reach $800k+ this year, but the market has been strong of late. From a 401k perspective we only have space to contribute about another $11k between the two of us. Will help get us closer to $800k but will need a continued boost from the market to make it happen.

No 529 here at the moment, but since it effectively allows you not to dip into your other stash when it comes to helping your kids for college, I don't see why not to include it.

I include my HSA even though it's only for one specific category of future spending, and 529 is similarly specific to only one category of future spending.

I wouldn't include 529 in 4% calculations, though, unless college costs are included in the spending which you are looking to model with that 4%.  Similarly with Rich/Broke/Dead or other calculators; unless they are granular enough to account for college spending, I wouldn't include the 529 money when running retirement calculators.

I also include the 529 accounts.  It's part of the stash and its yet to be determined how it will be spent.

I am joining the race to $1M officially today. I crossed the $500k in retirement accounts recently. With 529 accounts included the total liquid savings are in the ballpark of $550k. Till a few months ago, we were on a single income that too on an academic salary. So the $100k race took 5 years, the $100k-$250k race took 5 years, and the $250k-$500k race took 3 years. Now, I feel that is a long period but back when I started, even $100k in savings felt like a pipe dream. A few months ago, my wife started working and last month, I switched to private industry. Our combined income went up by more than $100k. A long time ago, I wrote down in my journal of my aim to reach $1M in 2030. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, our new target is to reach $1M in 5 years. I am including my 529 accounts for this race.

Aug 6, 2023: $550k.

Depending on how you value our house, you could probably (easily) make the argument that we're there... but I'm going to keep it at our current value for the time being to play it conservatively. Being this close really makes me want to do something absurd like include the sterling flatware, sports collectibles and tools, because we'd certainly be past 1mm in that case... Argh, just need to be patient. Mrs Finwiz just got a raise and bonus which is also awesome, and we should be paying a bit less in taxes starting next month,so that ought to help push the needle over.

Mrs Finwiz just got a raise and bonus which is also awesome, and we should be paying a bit less in taxes starting next month,so that ought to help push the needle over.

I personally wouldn't include home equity or any of that other stuff which won't be used to fund expenses. If sold and thrown into the portfolio, I'd add it.

Oh I absolutely agree about all the other stuff, I mainly said it in jest because of how darn close it feels like we are. Having said that, we’re currently house hacking (and planning to fully rent it out once we decide to upgrade) - as such, we’re including it at a conservative value (it’s probably worth 50k more than we currently track it at).

37 months since Sept 2020, average gain of $13,000 per month (!!!).

Keep swimming and see you in the next thread!

Month eight of unpaid sabbatical is on the books. Remarkable the my NW is nearly unchanged from Jan 1 when I started.

Since I don't have a job to go back to and the labor market is deteriorating, I'm feeling pressure to find work in the next couple of months.

We have been hemorrhaging money it feels like out of our cash savings this last month and a half. Just a lot of little things. It's a bit stressful even though we have plenty of cash to keep up. Figuring the investments (tracked above) at the end of the month is such a nice moral boost. Even though slightly down, it's just nice to know we have a nice chunk of cash there.

Going to be a stagnant-ish next couple months. Some home improvement stuff, some car repairs. Looking forward to next spring's bonus season. Replenish the cash, go back to hardcore mode. Eye on the ball.

Being in accumulation mode I only total everything up at erratic intervals (that no doubt will rankle the spreadsheet jockeys) because I find it healthier to largely ignore the ups and downs of the markets and their impact on my stash if I'm not going to change anything about my approach. And I'm a little lazy.

But it was pretty cool to check in today and find I've finally cracked 700k for the first time...

I'm also a solo cash & investments only person. Have yet to own any real estate.

Totaled things up again a few days ago and hot damn, I'm now 3/4 of a millionaire.

@LightStache belated welcome back to the US. What an amazing machine the stock market is, to produce income even when you were idle!

@mbk welcome! Those are some impressive accomplishments: to $10K being an unfathomably large number to facing down $1M, and doing it sooner than expected!

@runningthroughFIRE I spent much of 2022 also flirting with the $500K line. Very frustrating! But, 🤞, the market seems to have returned to an upward trend. Here's hoping you are in this race for good now!

@Imustacheyouaquestion congrats! We will miss you, but you won't miss this thread!

@Samuel that is a pretty significant milesone. Enjoy!

Realized the cash I'm holding in a CD is no different than an iBond for these purposes, so added the CD to investments as of 7/31. A little revision to the stash for that month. This is sort of "covering up" part of the dip in investments.

Goal reached, I guess.  Though honestly, not gonna revise.... after all "The recession is coming....." (Quote from 2020, 21, 22, 23, 24?)
Either way at least I am back on track....  Where I go from here... Only the darkness knows.

Delayed response on this one but she ended up passing past month. We're glad she's at peace.

Long but nice story of how our finances played into it:

When my wife and I first met, she invited me to her church. I was really drawn to the pastor. He was very academic with his sermons, and also spoke in a way that I was drawn to his every word. Fast forward a couple years, he leaves his position to pursue other interests...and we all move on in life. But his impact on my wife and me will last forever.

Fast forward to last month, it turns out he was in the same city where my MIL was hospitalized. I reached out to him via email, but he was unable to stop by as he also had an immediate family member pass at the same time and didn't have time to visit the hospital. No hard feelings. Shortly after, my MIL passed.

Me trying to be a good husband, I booked my wife a first class ticket back home. After dealing with the death of her mother, figure why not spend a few extra dollars to have her fly home comfortably.

And what do you know, guess who is seated next to her: the pastor! They caught up, prayed together, and made an unremarkable flight memorable.

So while you couldn't reliably replicate our experience, having extra money to spend allowed me to send my wife out of state twice, unplanned, and even do it in a way that wasn't "mustachian." And we had a happy coincidence that made a hard time a little easier.

Moral of the story, money is a tool, and saving it reasonably allows you to have options later in life.
