Happy new year everyone!

In the spirit of the new year, I thought I'd change up my updates to give me more of a historical snapshot and monitor my year over year increase as well.  Tracking my liquid investments only and looking to close the gap on $1MM this year with a stretch goal to actually reach it if all goes well!

Dec. 2017: $502k

Jan. 2, 2018: $513.7k

After maxing out tax advantaged accounts we're hoping to pour an extra $50k into Vanguard this year. If we up that to $54k then we'll be able to invest $100k in 2018 so that's the goal! Slow and steady climb all the way to $1m.

Skipped a month:

Jan 2018 - $580k
Dec 2017 - $569k
Nov 2017 - $561k
Oct 2017 - $546k
Sep 2017 - $538k
Aug 2017 - $497k

I know my rate of increase isn't spectacular, but I'm pumped we are up $250k since I began tracking in Sep 2016!

Hello all and Happy New Year!,

I am newly graduated from the Race from $250K to $500k thread. We actually hit $500k at the end of November, but I wanted to wait a month before posting here.  You know, make sure the ink was dry on the final transcripts and all that.

Invested assets as of 12-2017: $510,037

Yep, got a long way to go, but looking forward to the trip.

End of month = another spreadsheet cell filled in!  :)

Here we go again!  :)

MonthLiquidNet Worth
Jan-17
$604K
$883K
Feb-17$622K$905K
Mar-17$651K$930K
Apr-17$660K$939K
May-17$675K$954K
Jun-17$694K$967K
Jul-17$717K$991K
Aug-17$721K$1,000K
Sep-17$738K$1,007K
Oct-17$762K$1,033K
Nov-17$782K$1,055K
Dec-17$796K$1,058K

Investment accounts rose by $14K while net worth rose by $3K; this is because we depleted some cash to pay for renovations that are ongoing at our house and I don't count cash as part of our investment account totals.

Overall gain in NW for 2017 was $175K, and gain in investment accounts was $192K.  Astounding--our investment accounts made roughly 2.5x what we put in to them.  We are now 79.6% of the way to our goal of $1M in investments!  :)

(posting also in the $1M to $2M thread for NW)

Liquid / Total
1/1/17  - 472k / 833k
2/1/17  - 474k / 843k
3/1/17  - 494k / 864k
4/1/17  - 508k / 875k
5/1/17  - 523k / 893k
6/1/17  - 547k / 915k
7/1/17  - 553k / 923k
8/1/17  - 571k / 933k
9/1/17  - 587k / 952k
10/1/17 - 600k / 967k
12/1/17 - 619k / 987k
1/1/18   - 633k / 1000k

Whew, just made it.  I thought that market dip on the last trading day might take us back below, but we held on for the Pyrrhic victory.  My wife and I celebrated on NYE by opening a bottle of nice champagne someone left at our house in a previous year.  We don't really feel any different, in fact I feel pretty poor as we spent the day trying to decide what else can be cut from the budget next year to get us down to 40k annual expenses in 2018.  What a crazy dichotomy we choose to live in.

Jan-18      $617,102.81 (+81,144) --> total NW Gain of $210,532 in 2017. Don't think this will be sustainable as about 60K was due to market gains. I guess we shall see.

Welcome all newcomers to the race. Congrats to those coming close to completion.

We're just jumping over from the race to 500k thread. Just checked our accounts today and are sitting at around $527K net worth.

Checking in at $554K. +27K in ~2 months. Not too shabby.

Yesterday I passed the finish line--$1,005,000 in investments and cash.  No debts.  Been working towards this goal for a while, and now that I'm here my mind automatically switches to "It's not that much money if I have it."  I was a teacher.  And now I have a million dollar nest egg at 46.  It's really possible, people.

Awesome!!  Huge congrats!  I am a teacher also, and I hope to reach that double comma club--albeit ten years later than you did!  Glad to hear that it's possible!  :)

Crossed the $1M in just our investments yesterday. $1,002,005.11. in retirement and brokerage accounts. Does not include our HSA, emergency fund, home equity or kids college funds. Feels pretty good for two 40 year olds.
Now we've really got to work on cutting expenses so we can actually FIRE in the next couple years. Of course likely market declines and the uncertainty in the health insurance market may delay FIRE as well.

End of 2007: $71,000
End of 2008: $87,600
End of 2009: $202,000
End of 2010: $257,000
2011: $298,000
2012: $364,000
2013: $371,000
2014: $615,000 (This looks like a big jump from 2013 because I started counting in my calculations an investment account which hadn't been counted in prior years)
2015: $644,000
2016: $740,000
July 2017: $813,000

At the end of December 2017 we were at $926,000 for an increase of $186,000 year over date. About $40,000 of that comes from savings, the rest was market growth.

I knew I was close, but I didn't expect it to happen this fast.

2018's one week gains in the market have pushed me into millionaire territory.

My Total NW is now just a nose (hair) across the line at $1,001,051

I'm hoping to get to "true" millionaire status this year (liquid net worth).   If 2018 provides the NW gains that 2017 gave me, then I'm gonna make it.

I won't be surprised if the market next week pushes me back below the line, but it feels good to have made it across for the first time!

Kicking off the new year with this race, though the timing could have been way better. I'm taking a break from work after having Boy #2, so the increases for the next 6-9 months will be from appreciating investments. Hubby's job is a dream, but doesn't pay much to allow investment during my break, so this "race" is partly to keep me mindful of where I am so I don't slack off too much.

This after income of $200K+ the past 4 years.

Cash: $130K (too much cash, I know)
Invested Assets: $480K
House (that I'd love to offload this year): $240K, conservatively.

Total: $850K.
Getting to $1M will be a slow slog in the near future but I need goals.

Plans:
Pay off the $3K of remaining student loans that was sold and had the interest suddenly jacked up: Done

Open and Fund a Roth IRA (in the past I just maxed out the 401K): TBD this week

Transfer second 401K to Vanguard IRA: TBD this week

More research into 529 plans

Exercise company options and consolidate investments @ Vanguard: Soon as there's a decent recovery. Not sure what's ailing it lately.

Open to suggestions.

Latest update!

                     Invested/Cash    Total NW
End of 2015  $513k                $752k
End of 2016  $574k                $820k
10/1/17        $670k                $921k
11/1/17        $679k                $931k
12/1/17        $693k                $944k
1/1/18          $701K                $954k

Desperately trying to get my Liquid NW number to $1m.  I've come so far but it still feels a long way off!  Thanks to all of you for keeping me motivated.

Our numbers are really similar Bergal; I'm just a few months ahead of you on liquid assets.  I too am feeling the "$700k doldrums".  Feel like I'm stuck midway to the goal!  I'm trying to focus on reaching $800k, because $1M invested feels too far away.

Not sure I'd be too "doldrum" like in your situation.  An increase of nearly $200K in your invested amount in two years is nothing to be sad about.

Hi everyone! I'm in the race to go to $1 million dollars.

At the moment I'm at approximately $768,000. Just $232,000 more to go!

My 2018 resolution is to take my finances more seriously this year and to start investing a bit more as I haven't been doing the hard yards to get to FIRE.

Knock knock....

I just passed £500k :D :D

Will post a proper update on 1st Feb.

My number is £850k so might not make the 2C's but I wont complain if I do.

At current growth rate I am looking at 1MM sometime late 2023.  Hoping to FIRE in 2022.

Checked today, still not a millionaire.

How did you do it?

I got a high paying job right out of college, kept my spending at less than $10K / year, and invested everything else.

More research into 529 plans Get moving on this. If you're already on Boy #2, valuable time's a-wastin'.

Exercise company options and consolidate investments @ Vanguard: Soon as there's a decent recovery. Not sure what's ailing it lately. Can you clarify this please? Recovery from what? What is ailing lately?

Open to suggestions. You might get more in-depth responses if you start a case study. This thread seems to be turning into more of a place to report progress (Not a criticism, just an observation.), as evidenced by the strings of numbers and lack of response to your post.
I did it! I have a journal!

Checked today, still not a millionaire.

Me either. On Wednesday I got to within $1,500, but my funds went backwards yesterday so I'm now $3,500 short. Once I do hit the number I am going to stop checking the markets!

I return to work at the end of the month after a long sabbatical and I am really hoping to hit the magic $1M before then as it is my FIRE number.
