Estimates of NW over the years with more concrete values currently
2011: $40k  Real estate sucked (I'm a realtor and own rentals), income was low and equity was non existent.  Tough times!
2012: $55k
2013: $75k
2014: $160k  Being a realtor and also having a large portion of NW in real estate helped income and value go up drastically. (income $155k) plus asset appreciation
2015: $295k  (income $210k) plus asset appreciation
2016: $505k (income $242k) plus asset appreciation
Started using Mint for tracking in 2017
2017: March $515
         April $500 spent money... :(
         May $521
         June $573
         July $588
         Aug $605k
         Sep $647k
         Oct $650k
         Dec $684K
2018
         Jan $725k

Dec 2014: 410,781
Dec 2015: 449,701
Dec 2016: 517,871
Dec 2017: 650,444
01/20/2018:  679,426

started to get serious about investing around 2007, before that it was mostly in CD's.  It took a long time to get to the first 500k, hopefully the 2nd half will come much quicker.

Average about 35k to 40k of contribution per year, the rest is from Mr. market.

Exercise company options and consolidate investments @ Vanguard: Soon as there's a decent recovery. Not sure what's ailing it lately. Can you clarify this please? Recovery from what? What is ailing lately?

Thanks, Dicey.
The company's stock price has been depressed the past couple of months, despite analyst valuations that are significantly higher.

Has anyone plotted a curve to plot time vs progress for everyone?  I know someone did this once on the 250-500 thread and it was actually quite interesting to see the average and how the majority progressed within pretty much the same time frame.

What's the line about luck favoring the prepared?  Having the discipline to put yourself into a position to benefit from a rising market was under your control.

That's some nice progress, Willfire. Welcome aboard!

thanks, Trifele.

Really thrilled by the progress but little scared at the same time.  can't stop thinking when will be a correction, although theoretically it's a good buying opportunity.

1 mil. still seems so far away...

Yeah, there will be a correction, but we just need to ride it out . . . When it happens, it's not theoretically a good opportunity; it IS a good opportunity. :)

Sep 2017: 539K / 679K
Oct 2017: 551K / 698K

FIRST posting of the year!

Almost our best month ever! Simply tied for now. When my paycheck actually clears it might bump us into record territory. I get paid once a month so, when I make these it's a good guess at my income. I always come back and adjust!

FOLLOWUP- I probably did beat my record but given this month of down market I think I will just leave this post-as-is :) Down 22k so far! weeee

+$24k this year! Aiming, for 100k in any given year of savings. Though, I am really only tracking worth gains, not savings directly. (So it includes gains/losses in the market) Given 11 month(s) left, and 76k more to go, I should hit this goal!

Obviously this was a great month. NW is up $46k over last month, shattering our previous best increase (+$30k). Our year-over-year NW increase is over $200k for the first time. And we went from $500k to $600k in just under four months. $1000k in 2019 now seems possible.

I also got some financial housekeeping done this month. I finally rolled the last of our high fee investments into Fidelity. These were a mix of American Funds that have performed in line with the SP500 the last several years, but it was time to get them back under our control. I dropped off our tax information with our accountant and expect to have that squared away soon (I'm not capable of DIYing them anymore). I'm hoping for a roughly ~$5k refund, which will all go to a family member as a gift. Last but not least, we finally opened a taxable investment account (and proceeded to lose $15 this month!).

Aug17:$488k
Sep17:$507k
Oct17:$526k
Nov17:$546k
Dec17:$566k
Jan18:$612k

First day of a new month--time for another update!  :)

MonthLiquidNet Worth
Jan-17
$604K
$883K
Feb-17$622K$905K
Mar-17$651K$930K
Apr-17$660K$939K
May-17$675K$954K
Jun-17$694K$967K
Jul-17$717K$991K
Aug-17$721K$1,000K
Sep-17$738K$1,007K
Oct-17$762K$1,033K
Nov-17$782K$1,055K
Dec-17$796K$1,058K
Jan-18$836K$1,095K

How can it POSSIBLY be that our net worth rose $37K this month--or, even more mind-boggling, that our investment accounts rose by $40K?  It still boggles my mind.

Yes, we added our usual ~$7K through savings in tax-deferred accounts, employer match, and post-tax savings, so I suppose that made our actual investment account GAIN "only" $33K.  Still--wow.

We made another payment of 7K to our contractors on our home renovations (we'll pay the last $1K next month and will be done with that for a while).

Here's to a successful February for everybody!

(posting also in the $1M to $2M thread for net worth)

Wow, what a month January was.

Invested assets:
12-2017: $510,037
1-2018: $539,718 (+29.6k)

I keep asking myself if this is for real.

Jan 2018 - 846K  /  987K
Feb 2018 - 880K /  1.02M

+33K on the year so far.

Can't help but feel the footsteps of a major correction on the horizon. Too many people are talking about the market at the office and in social circles.  Has that effervescent feel.  But we could still have a ways to go up.  I was expecting a downturn 3 years ago. And 2 years ago. And again last year.

Greenspan says we're in a bubble.  Back when he was at the wheel and called it 'irrational exuberance', there were a few years left on the upswing before the burst.

In the spirit of the new year, I thought I'd change up my updates to give me more of a historical snapshot and monitor my year over year increase as well.  Tracking my liquid investments only and looking to close the gap on $1MM this year with a stretch goal to actually reach it if all goes well!

Welcome G-Cool!  Come on in, friend.

EDITED to add -- You squeaked in just before the market dip yesterday, haha.  Don't worry, you'll be in good company if your end-of-February number dips back below $500k . . .  We can all cry in our beer -- and then ride it out -- together.

I think I might have jinxed myself...

These numbers are as of Saturday.... I was really excited to see that our liquid net worth went up by exactly $100k in 2017, although our savings rate was not as good as it normally is.

I don't expect the numbers to remain so pretty (and we "lost" value of about $10k on Friday). However, on Friday I upped my 401k contribution to max it out for 2018, so we'll be in a good position to take advantage of any correction.

I graduated to the "race to $2,000,000" thread last year, but I'm nervous about a bear market. Please be nice to me, guys, when I come crawling back...

Rebalancing today, currently I have almost no bonds.

What are you buying, if you don't mind me asking? We have about 10% of our stash in a mix of cash, TIPS, and intermediate government bonds, but I don't have a good rationale for this mix. I've had a lot of trouble finding guidance on fixed income.

For bonds, I have a Roth in which I just buy something like "bond fund for America". I sold the stake in November because it felt like it was slowing me down (I'm currently 37 and thought I could handle the risk). Within my 401K there's just a generic bond fund. Intermediate or short term bonds should be fine for your needs.

So... whats the done thing if your NW drops back below 500k?  Rejoin the 250-500k thread?

Just updated after all the market wobbles and now @ 490... might be lower by the end of the month!

Totally up to you, Skip, but I think I'd just stay here.  There'll be quite a few people in this boat.  I say let's just put on a pot of coffee and hang out.  You'll get back to the 500k mark.

This is a Bogleheads Forum question. They'll give you the best input, IMHO, in regards to this.  Your question has likely been answered (and discussed and debated and debated some more) dozens of times on that forum. Just use the search function.

All the best,

JGS

FWIW, I'm also 90% Equities, 10% Bonds. My Bonds are in US Treasuries (30 year -yields about 3%) as per the Cash Balance plan at my workplace, and that's enough for me.

In the meantime, sending a virtual hug to all those whose nets just dropped ~50k. *sigh*

This is why I update every three months instead of monthly.  Less noise in the NW trends.  This is also why I make a point of counting total number of shares I have at the end of every year.

Joining the club.

...

Not sure when/if I'll get to 1m; may semi-FIRE before then.
...

If the market were to stay flat, would probably hit 1m investible around 6 months from now.
Quarterly update, November 2017:

....

Not declaring victory yet though until I have 1m investible and no debt to the bank.
Quarterly update, February 2018:

  • Q1 2018: 1,075k liquid + 409k home equity: total 1,484k (debt: 141k)
  • Q4 2017: 1,005k liquid + 332k home equity: total 1,337k (debt: 189k)
  • Q3 2017: 894k liquid + 313k home equity: total 1,207k (debt: approx 193k)
  • Q2 2017: 720k liquid + 250k home equity: total 970k (debt: approx 228k)

I am not entirely sure of the dates and numbers, but this is vaguely correct... Net worth is clearly north of $1m now, and we even have more than $1m invested/investible, but still not debt free: another $66k and we'd have enough to pay off our debts and still have $1m invested/investible, so getting pretty close now.

I'm at $797,202. Still up from last month, which is great considering that I bought my share parcels just before the recent downturn.

Also I have cryptocurrency and as you all know the value of crypto went down quite a bit. I'm down on one of the coins, but I'm still heaps up on one of the other ones I bought.

The property market is at a low where I am at the moment, and I'm considering purchasing a house some time later this year or maybe next year. But we'll see. I actually read an article last week or so about a 35 year old retiring due to Mustachian concepts and instead what he does now is to travel the world. I have this kind of work vs travel thing in my head going so we'll see which one wins out in the end!
