Race from 500k to 1M!

What a ride! We got married in very late 2015, and basically had a zero net worth. Less than 9 years later to the first million. Seems surreal.

Congrats!! It is a surreal feeling. If it helps, we got marred in 2015, but with more like ~$200k net worth, less than that liquid. We've wobbled a bit above and below liquid million over the past few months, especially with buying a house and moving expenses. Fingers crossed we're super close to it once more as Q1 wraps up...

Anyway, with few if any real world people to talk about it... and probably no direct/immediate actions, it's weird how you reach $1 million but the experience can't be like, CELEBRATED and SHOUTED ABOUT. But enjoy it, nonetheless!

While I'm far less engaged with the forum here than I used to be, it's still my one place to talk about this sort of stuff, and I'm glad to share the milestone!

While I'm more on the consumer sucka side of mustachianism, the lessons learned from the blog and the forum have been so valuable.

Officially started the race to 1M last month. Not sure if I will actually finish this race as I am more focused on making memories with my young family then early retirement. We are going on a trip to Disney in April, so net worth increases may be low for the next couple months as we pay that off.

Bought a new-to-me car and a new furnace and mini-split heat pumps, updated still-conservative house value. Probably will hit $1M this month!!

As someone who grew up in and out of Section 8 housing and had a net worth of less than zero until my late thirties, I am so tremendously surprised to be in this position. And so grateful to this community! I literally read MMM investment order, etc. in late '16 and just . . . did that. Also joined the DPOYM club, which has helped a lot.

*April 2024 - Just hit $900k in investments. This is a meaningful milestone for me as it came after a significant setback. Within days after my last post, the market retracted. I had rode a number of individual growth stocks that seemed to be popular among retail investors. The gains had been too good to be true. Most of these stocks tanked spectacularly over a period of months as the market dipped. I soon found myself $250k down from Nov. 2021 highs. A very humbling experience which taught me a lot about what I didn’t know. I’m 40 now and haven’t hit that magic number needed to graduate this thread, but will be there soon.

*November 2021 - Just hit $800k in investments… 4/5 of the way to a million. Hard to believe that my number has doubled in under two years! Present goal is to hit $1M by January 2024 (before 40th BDay). It’s going to take some great returns to do it.

November 18, 2023: $580,473.22 as of this morning. Small market upswing plus a fairly large payment from my business deal earlier this year means I hit both my Q4 2023 and Q1 2024 goals well in advance on paper. Some of this will be taken out for taxes, but it’s been a crazy month for progress toward my goals.

December 1, 2023: $603,891.35 as of today's paycheck. Approximately $27K of this is earmarked for taxes, so I'm sitting at around $576K "true" net worth. I've reached out to my CPA to see if I can to do anything before year end to reduce that bill.

January 18, 2024: $601,752.29 as of today. This is the adjusted "true" net worth after taking out the tax account I have earmarked (currently sitting just under $45k). So I'm well on my way to my Q2 goal of $620K early, but I also have a lot of work that needs to be done around the house. I just paid for a bathroom remodel, and have a lot of other work that needs to be done (water penetration issues and remediation). Overall doing well and feeling good about the progress I'm making.

February 12, 2024: Weird mid-month update I guess. $622,698.18 adjusted "true" net worth with earmarked taxes taken out of consideration. Hit Q2 goal already, but I likely won't hang onto it for too long since I still have a LOT of work around the house to get done. I'm hoping to keep the kitchen + flooring + drywall down to ~$25K or so but we'll see. Already $23K in this year between bathroom, re-grading the lawn, and installing gutters and french drains.

March 6, 2024: $628,383.97 for now after bathroom, re-grading lawn, and installing gutters and french drains at the house. Still have more work to do, but just glad NW is still mostly holding through the spending. I'll go ahead and mark my quarterly goal as met, ahead of the curve and still waiting on some disbursements.

April 8, 2024: $704,138.33. Still doesn't really feel real, but I'm going to keep my head down and keep moving forward.
