It's really incredible seeing the modest increases in the beginning to the large jumps now! Can you estimate how much of the increases are new contributions each month and how much are gains? Are you putting the same amount of new money in each month?

The $100k race took 5 years, the $100k-$250k race took 5 years, and the $250k-$500k race took 3 years. I am considering only investment money. Conservative aim is to complete the race in 5 years.

Aug 8, 2024: $830k
After 1 year, a gain of $280k. 40% of it is our contributions and the rest is market gains.

Welcome to the club! I peaked over and dipped under $500K a full THREE times over 11 months, before finally maintaining $500K two months later. All in, it took 13 months to go from $515K to $516K. You'll get there!

I stopped contributing to my taxable brokerage almost entirely mid-2022 (found out I was pregnant - needed to stash some cash to pay for delivery and then we really started to think about buying a house, etc.) I kept maxing out my 401k and Roth though. In 2021, I was like mega-FIRE, I would have months where I would invest almost my whole paycheck. Some of the big jumps early on (end of 2020 and start of 2021) were from me investing my savings account almost 100k - that's when I actually found and started this FIRE journey. All my investments prior to that were just my 401k at work, I started out with 500 a month, and my company does some profit sharing too.

I was worried that I would fall back under the $500k threshold for this race at the end of July, but glad it stayed above water.  I have to accept that I achieved the milestone ($500k) and the market is going to do what it is going to do.  That doesn't change the fact that I am now in this race.  (even if I dip below again).  I am still thrilled to be in this race.  The prior race felt like forever to complete, when it really was about 4.5 years.  A doubling in 4.5 years is fantastic.

That is some pretty hefty gains (54.98%) in 13 months.  If that was all market, mad respect.  If you made a ton of contributions to your stash even more respect.  Congrats!!  So cool to see that kind of progress for someone.

I appreciate the support @icmac32! I'll try and get a breakdown in there for the next update. I was helped a lot by a big bonus at work (March 2023 jump). Otherwise I'm almost 100% VTSAX in my investments and have about 130k in the vanguard money market fund giving about 5% a year right now.

House finally got finished.  So Woot, I can celebrate getting in to debt!  (Lets not.)  Not that it affects me, per the arrangement + what I put down, I own over 50% of the house already so....  My net worth went UP, not down due to the debt.  Can't count it here though, as I am not counting any property I own/paying off as part of my fire.   Still, worth it.
As for my goal, I am approaching that rapidly....  Not planned I swear!  if the numbers keep going this way I'll blow past 700k.  I'd say my absolute original goal of "money in case I get laid off" has been met, beyond what I ever thought possible.  Now I just need to focus on everything else.

Finally updated our budget and net worth for the second half of the year.  The market went up in December and we did our annual paydown of farm loans, which helped the balance sheet.  It's wild to think we might become millionaires in 2024!  Because the vast majority of our net worth is based on the farm and investments, we are pretty much just along for the ride nowadays.

Well, I didn't mention it in my last update, but I was pregnant back then, and we have a 4 month old now!  Which is why there was a complete lack of updates here  And it turns out we hit a MILLION DOLLARS earlier this year!  Woohoo!  Nowadays our struggle is not overspending our monthly income lol, between daycare, groceries, and baby stuff.  Feeling fortunate to have such a nest egg built up so we feel freer with the budget.

November 18, 2023: $580,473.22 as of this morning. Small market upswing plus a fairly large payment from my business deal earlier this year means I hit both my Q4 2023 and Q1 2024 goals well in advance on paper. Some of this will be taken out for taxes, but it’s been a crazy month for progress toward my goals.

December 1, 2023: $603,891.35 as of today's paycheck. Approximately $27K of this is earmarked for taxes, so I'm sitting at around $576K "true" net worth. I've reached out to my CPA to see if I can to do anything before year end to reduce that bill.

January 18, 2024: $601,752.29 as of today. This is the adjusted "true" net worth after taking out the tax account I have earmarked (currently sitting just under $45k). So I'm well on my way to my Q2 goal of $620K early, but I also have a lot of work that needs to be done around the house. I just paid for a bathroom remodel, and have a lot of other work that needs to be done (water penetration issues and remediation). Overall doing well and feeling good about the progress I'm making.

February 12, 2024: Weird mid-month update I guess. $622,698.18 adjusted "true" net worth with earmarked taxes taken out of consideration. Hit Q2 goal already, but I likely won't hang onto it for too long since I still have a LOT of work around the house to get done. I'm hoping to keep the kitchen + flooring + drywall down to ~$25K or so but we'll see. Already $23K in this year between bathroom, re-grading the lawn, and installing gutters and french drains.

March 6, 2024: $628,383.97 for now after bathroom, re-grading lawn, and installing gutters and french drains at the house. Still have more work to do, but just glad NW is still mostly holding through the spending. I'll go ahead and mark my quarterly goal as met, ahead of the curve and still waiting on some disbursements.

April 8, 2024: $704,138.33. Still doesn't really feel real, but I'm going to keep my head down and keep moving forward.

June 4, 2024: $757,837.00. Missed the May update, can't believe it's already June. Hit Q1 2025 goal. I need to adjust my goals but it's hard to keep projecting increases when I'm not really sure when the "gravy train" comes to a halt. I'm keeping my head down, working, investing, and fixing up my damaged house. Not a whole lot else going on.

July 15, 2024: $835,443.55. Got a distribution that was long overdue from my OldBoss. About $30K of this will be going toward home renovations in the next month, I have a lot of damage that needs to be fixed. I feel like there's an end in sight with the home repairs and damage, at least, which is good. I'm about a year ahead of what I projected, but like I said, I still don't know when the rug is getting pulled.

September 3, 2024: $850,387.46. I totally forgot about August apparently with everything that has been going on. Been staying with my brother, and the house is nearly done (hopefully by the end of this week). I ended up doing some additional upgrades/work (all windows and sliding glass doors replaced) so the out of pocket was higher than the $30K originally anticipated, but overall very happy with the progress and still "up" in net worth despite dropping closer to 50-60K on all of the renovations.

I am with you on tracking the retirement savings only.  Albeit, I am $200k behind with you, but really do think my number will be $1M.  TNW is ~$800k, but doesn't really matter as I am trying for FI which means I won't have to work if I don't want to.  You will be done with this race in what about 2 years from now and 5 years total.  That is fantastic!!!  I want 4-5 years and I will be happy if I achieve that.

Well, I didn't mention it in my last update, but I was pregnant back then, and we have a 4 month old now!  Which is why there was a complete lack of updates here  And it turns out we hit a MILLION DOLLARS earlier this year!  Woohoo!  Nowadays our struggle is not overspending our monthly income lol, between daycare, groceries, and baby stuff.  Feeling fortunate to have such a nest egg built up so we feel freer with the budget.

January 2024: $971,175.84
February 2024:  $993,429.16
March 2024:  $1,008,621.69  two comma club!
April 2024:  $993,941.18  one comma club lol
May 2024:  $1,011,440.27  back to two commas, and I it stuck this time.

It took roughly 2.5 years to double our money and go up by nearly $500,000.  That's insane.  Well, off to go snuggle a baby now. :)
