*September 2024 - Just hit $1,000,000 in personal investments. Finally a millionaire by any definition. It took about 5 years (starting in debt) to hit $100k and then a little over 9 years to get from $100k to $1M. Feels really good getting here and happy to have gotten here at age 40. I know that it can dip back down, but this is my first time crossing the elusive number. I've had some setbacks along the way... However, my outlook has shifted over the last year or so. Although I will continue to diligently save and invest, it is no longer a top priority. I feel like I will have financial security with what has already been put in place and that, everything else, is just icing on the cake. My top priority is using my income to create great memories and have awesome experiences with my family. I feel blessed. The financial journey will continue to be documented in the next 'Race' forum.

*April 2024 - Just hit $900k in investments. This is a meaningful milestone for me as it came after a significant setback. Within days after my last post, the market retracted. I had rode a number of individual growth stocks that seemed to be popular among retail investors. The gains had been too good to be true. Most of these stocks tanked spectacularly over a period of months as the market dipped. I soon found myself $250k down from Nov. 2021 highs. A very humbling experience which taught me a lot about what I didn’t know. I’m 40 now and haven’t hit that magic number needed to graduate this thread, but will be there soon.

*November 2021 - Just hit $800k in investments… 4/5 of the way to a million. Hard to believe that my number has doubled in under two years! Present goal is to hit $1M by January 2024 (before 40th BDay). It’s going to take some great returns to do it.

August 2021 - Just hit $750k in investments… 3/4 of the way to 7 figures!

Joining the ranks of you folks chasing that seven-figure milestone! (To keep my journey consistent, I’m going to be following based on my personal investments / retirement accounts—separate from the wife's—and not counting the home value).

This weekend, April 2021, I hit a major milestone: $700k at 37-years-old.

Looking back at notes from ‘Race from 250 to 500k!’, here’s a brief recap:
*June 2010 - Finish grad school, 26 y/o, $90k+ in debt; new job at $40k/year
*May 2015 - (I think) - First crossed $100k at 31 y/o
*January 2018 - Passed the $250k mark
*April 2019 - Hit $312.5k
*June 2019 - 1/3 of the way to $1M
*February 2020 - Hit $400k
*November 2020 - Eclipsed $500k (and finished the ‘Race from 250 to $500k!’)

This is fantastic!  Congratulations!!  Make those memories.  I had my children younger-ish 24-30 years old for their arrivals.  I made awesome memories and even though it pushed back the FIRE date, I am glad I did it.  I could have been more frugal, but have come to realize that I actually accomplished what I wanted to.  That is the real goal.

Just finished a cross country move, and life has been a little hectic lately. Will need to post September's numbers in just a few days.

Net worth consists of equity portfolio, two rental properties, and cash (checking/savings). Liabilities are month-to-month credit card (PIF every month), two mortgages on rental properties, one car loan (will be PIF 24 months from date of issue) and what’s left of my wife’s student loans. All numbers are end-of-month totals.

Net Worth by End-of-Year:
2016 (start): ($27,015.16)
2017: $2,474.33
2018: $33,203.90
2019: $68,192.96
2020: $130,715.91
2021: $296,922.14
2022: $400,055.05
Current: $519,129.00

Goals Breakdown
Q4 2023: $540K
Q1 2024: $580K
Q2 2024: $620K
Q3 2024: $660K
Q4 2024: $700K
Q1 2025: $740K
Q2 2025: $780K
Q3 2025: $820K

Q4 2025: $860K
Q1 2026: $900K
Q2 2026: $940K
Q3 2026: $980K
Q4 2026: $1M

November 18, 2023: $580,473.22 as of this morning. Small market upswing plus a fairly large payment from my business deal earlier this year means I hit both my Q4 2023 and Q1 2024 goals well in advance on paper. Some of this will be taken out for taxes, but it’s been a crazy month for progress toward my goals.

December 1, 2023: $603,891.35 as of today's paycheck. Approximately $27K of this is earmarked for taxes, so I'm sitting at around $576K "true" net worth. I've reached out to my CPA to see if I can to do anything before year end to reduce that bill.

January 18, 2024: $601,752.29 as of today. This is the adjusted "true" net worth after taking out the tax account I have earmarked (currently sitting just under $45k). So I'm well on my way to my Q2 goal of $620K early, but I also have a lot of work that needs to be done around the house. I just paid for a bathroom remodel, and have a lot of other work that needs to be done (water penetration issues and remediation). Overall doing well and feeling good about the progress I'm making.

February 12, 2024: Weird mid-month update I guess. $622,698.18 adjusted "true" net worth with earmarked taxes taken out of consideration. Hit Q2 goal already, but I likely won't hang onto it for too long since I still have a LOT of work around the house to get done. I'm hoping to keep the kitchen + flooring + drywall down to ~$25K or so but we'll see. Already $23K in this year between bathroom, re-grading the lawn, and installing gutters and french drains.

March 6, 2024: $628,383.97 for now after bathroom, re-grading lawn, and installing gutters and french drains at the house. Still have more work to do, but just glad NW is still mostly holding through the spending. I'll go ahead and mark my quarterly goal as met, ahead of the curve and still waiting on some disbursements.

April 8, 2024: $704,138.33. Still doesn't really feel real, but I'm going to keep my head down and keep moving forward.

June 4, 2024: $757,837.00. Missed the May update, can't believe it's already June. Hit Q1 2025 goal. I need to adjust my goals but it's hard to keep projecting increases when I'm not really sure when the "gravy train" comes to a halt. I'm keeping my head down, working, investing, and fixing up my damaged house. Not a whole lot else going on.

July 15, 2024: $835,443.55. Got a distribution that was long overdue from my OldBoss. About $30K of this will be going toward home renovations in the next month, I have a lot of damage that needs to be fixed. I feel like there's an end in sight with the home repairs and damage, at least, which is good. I'm about a year ahead of what I projected, but like I said, I still don't know when the rug is getting pulled.

September 3, 2024: $850,387.46. I totally forgot about August apparently with everything that has been going on. Been staying with my brother, and the house is nearly done (hopefully by the end of this week). I ended up doing some additional upgrades/work (all windows and sliding glass doors replaced) so the out of pocket was higher than the $30K originally anticipated, but overall very happy with the progress and still "up" in net worth despite dropping closer to 50-60K on all of the renovations.

September 27, 2024: $875,718.11. I guess the market jumped a bit. I feel like I'm continuing the march. Now that the home repairs are (mostly) done, I'll have some breathing room. I'll need to do the windows in the front unit of my house, but overall the big spending is done. Looking at tying the knot by the end of this year and doing a honeymoon trip in lieu of a wedding, then buckling down for the next chapter.

Congrats! @Whiskers

The $100k race took 5 years, the $100k-$250k race took 5 years, and the $250k-$500k race took 3 years. I am considering only investment money. Conservative aim is to complete the race in 5 years.

Aug 6, 2023: $550k
Apr 1, 2024:  $737k
July 1, 2024: $807k
Sep 30, 2024: $894k

Approximately $800k is in tax-advantaged accounts. We still have 20k left to contribute to retirement accounts for 2024. Stock market over the last year is unbelievable.

Not terrible considering that September is the month when several big expenses always hit.  It may actually be a little better than it looks because there's at least one large-ish transfer in progress and not showing up in either account at this exact moment.

Congrats @Whiskers!

It was a brutal 5 days for my second month in this race.  Today, righted the ship a bit, but will need a steady rise to stay qualified (if there is such a thing) for this race.  I planned on a summer swoon at some point, but it felt worse dipping back under $500k mark.  All part of the process.

Welcome to the club! I peaked over and dipped under $500K a full THREE times over 11 months, before finally maintaining $500K two months later. All in, it took 13 months to go from $515K to $516K. You'll get there!

https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/throw-down-the-gauntlet/race-from-500k-to-1m!/msg3283287/#msg3283287

I don't think I ever responded to this post.  Thank you for the encouraging perspective.  I am hopeful that I can be the main driver of gains for the next two years; meaning my contributions move the needle the most.  I do not want bad markets for certain, but I would like to put back $50k in 2025 and will be happy with a positive market year.

Bit surreal to hit the two-comma club. Probably will be back when the markets downswing again. If that's the case we will happily continue to invest when the market is on sale!

Lots of expenses from the move, but also a lot of reimbursements paid and incoming. Will end up being net positive, which is nice.

We're chugging along and saving every month.  Getting back into discipline mode where we shoot for 40-50% savings rate.  Its been a while since we were able to save that kind of percentage each month and it feels great to be back here.  Stretch goal for 2024 is 850 NW which I don't believe will happen, but the 800 mark is possible!

Received an inheritance this month that gets us pretty close to the million dollar club.

Congratulations, sort of because death is not something we usually celebrate.  I do however want to post as how leaving an inheritance is also part of the wealth building way.  My parents are in their 80's and will leave something (not insignificant) to their children.  My grandparents did the same.  They both are Mustachian in that they provided an inheritance.  They did live below their means.  Some more and some less so, but this is the way.

In our case, the grandparents on both sides were poor even in the LCOLA areas they lived in.  My parents got degrees and did better, BUT they aren't mustachians to a great degree.  They did however put those inheritances in the market and have never had to touch them.  They are now worth over $1M and likely $2M.  On the YOLO non-Mustachian side, I just spoke with mom yesterday and am constantly telling her if there is something she wants to do, place to go, buy new car, vacation with us somewhere, or remodel something on her home, to do it now.  I want her to continue to make memories.  I am old enough that my success is not determined by their generosity at death.

No shame in being grateful when it comes, but I, like I am sure you did, save and plan like it is never coming.  So in that vein, CONGRATULATIONS on having a family (assuming family) that lived the right way and has blessed you on your already solid FI journey.

Yeah, inheritance sure is a funny thing. The people it helps the most are the people who need it the least. In our case, we have a mustachian mindset, and we have been making great progress through the years. And this inheritance moves us closer to the goal. But if we weren't mustachian, it would probably all have gone to spending/debt, and wouldn't help us much at all.

Back in July my husband and I bought a truck and travel trailer, and have been traveling around and camping ever since.  We moved our business manager into our house, and the employees are running our business full time now.  I guess it is our version of coast fire.  We probably wont be able to add as much to our investments from now on, so hopefully the market can move them in the right direction.  Wish us luck.

Im going to set the goal here to reach 1M net worth within 2 years (including my home). Based on a 8% return on my investments and a 3.5% return on my home I will be about 40K short in two years, so either I will have to get lucky with the markets, or I will have to figure out a way to up my savings, but its a good stretch goal. Of course we could be in for a few down years in the market and then I'd miss the goal (which wouldn't be the end of the world), but its a worthy thing to strive for.

My goal when I hit 1M is to take a 2-3 month sabbatical and finally splurge on a used minivan that I will convert to a camper. Currently only own/drive/camp in my Prius but I'd like to spend more time camping when I can.

Then the next major goal is to reach 1M investment accounts, and final destination to reach 1.5M invested (excluding home) for FIRE. But I dont expect that to happen until about 10-15 years from now.

Here is my net worth by year (measured in March of each year, except final entry):

Year         Age   Net worth (house equity + investments + cash)
2008   20   $2,000.00
2009   21   $6,000.00
2010   22   $8,000.00
2010   23   $8,000.00
2011   24   $15,000.00
2012   25   $42,000.00
2013   26   $64,000.00
2014   27   $84,000.00
2015   28   $100,000.00
2016   29   $151,000.00
2017   30   $153,000.00
2018   31   $290,000.00
2019   32   $380,000.00
2020   33   $415,000.00
2021   34   $475,000.00
2022   35   $505,000.00
2023   36   $575,000.00
2024   37   $680,000.00

Dropping in here for the official “million dollar holler”.
Just crossed 1M this morning.
I dont count home equity or RSUs in privately held company so this is primarily all invested. 60/40 split between tax advantage and non.
A few memorable milestones:
2014: 25k assets and 30k in student loans
Late 2015- started making 100K- big jump from 43K years previously.
Early 2017- crossed 100K in assets
Early 2020 -crossed 300k
April 2021- crossed 500K
2022: started making $200K+
Mid 2023: cost of living jumped significantly but net worth kept climbing faster than ever and may be first time I started to feel “wealthy” since I spent $$ to increase quality of life and still hit financial goals.
Start of 2024 $775k
Today 10.14.24: Crossed 1 million.
Will likely be back but jumping into to next group now. Great being on this journey with you all!

I have passed the $1 MIL mark and I keep going - but I am becoming more and more discontented with work. What is interesting is that you set a goal and it never seems enough once you hit it! I have given myself to 55 with the option to stop working any time before that!

@wealthviahealth -  Awesome to see your big increases in income and what you have done with it.  I just made a similar income jump.  I hope I can replicate your success.

@Samuel - Congrats!! You will be on to the next race soon.  Even if markets do the other thing, you have made incredible strides.

Way to go!

Bit surreal to hit the two-comma club. Probably will be back when the markets downswing again. If that's the case we will happily continue to invest when the market is on sale!

Your post really has me thinking.  I am wondering if I can develop a similar small business.  I really have gotten way less spendy as the years go by and bet I can get by traveling like you have with a modest income coming in from business/employees.  I have owned a business before and it is not my favorite work, but it can solve the FI part for me even with something smallish like $2k/mo. earnings.  Very thought provoking.
