01/01/2021: 37.536,36 € (+5.378,55 €)

Closed out the year with the largest monthly increase to date. Close to 2k of that increase was in the crypto position which exploded in the last 3 months though, so I fully expect that to decrease again. 1,5k was from a tax free "Coronabonus" that employers are allowed to pay their employees here. Even though the crypto part of the portfolio rose from less than 5 % to more than 15 % I'll hold until the summer at least, to avoid paying taxes on the gains. If held more than 12 months any gains from crypto are tax free in Germany, same as gains from Gold.

Net worth increased by 24.557,09 € compared to January 1st of last year. This is crazy to me, as my net pay was only close to 31k. The growth is unlikely to be this high in 2021, as I sold some stuff in 2020 which helped with the increase, received a few unexpected monetary gifts from family and will need to spend a few grand on professional certification/training this year. If I pass my exams though, I'll greatly increase my earnings potential.

Apart from having to cancel vacations and not getting to see friends and family as much as I'd liked 2020 was a great year for me, as me and my family and friends luckily didn't catch Covid.

Wishing a great 2021 that hopefully allows a return to the lives we want to lead without fear of getting or spreading the illness, social distancing and economic hardships to everyone in this thread.

December turned out a bit better than expected.  Even though we weren't able to add any money still got $2,000 in growth.  Now to prepare for 2021 and moving to a new town for a new job.  Going to be an interesting January with packing up all our stuff and selling our first home.  Luckily we are moving to an LCOL area and our new rent is half a mortgage payment.  Hopefully, that will let us turbo charge to get us to the goal by 2022.

Hope everyone continues with their paths to success.

Hi all,

New to the forum, but been working on FIRE for the past 2 years. I graduated from college in december 2018, and started an engineering job end of january 2019, I am 25 now. I started off with pretty much no savings (< $5K), around $10K in credit card debt and ~30K in student loans, and moved to a new town to start my job. Luckily I have a killer deal for rent ($265/mo + $80-100 in utilities, due to splitting with 1 roommate), paid cash for a $3.5K car in december 2018 that's been pretty reliable (on the MMM list :)). Bought a car because I live 5-10 miles from work, work is a chemical plant so I hope I get excused for not wanting to live right next to it lol, no properties for rent nearby anyways.

Since a year before graduating I knew FIRE was one of my top goals, prior to that I did not save as much as I could have in college. Even though I went to community college I kinda spent all the extra money on weed and going out, and then once I transferred I lived in a studio for 2 years instead of having roommates. But hey at least I found this path before getting a job.

I'm making good money ($75K starting, now at $82.5K + bonus ($5K this year)), and saving a lot of it. Employer matches 5% of salary plus $5K/yr on 401K. Really started buckling down this year, maxing 401K and roth IRA in addition to investing what's left over. I'd say I earn the money, technically on call 24/7 and can be a stressful job, but average <50 hr/week. Managed to invest a lot of cash right around the COVID dip, and also refinanced my 401K to be 100% VTI equivalent right around then... Sitting at around 12% ROI for the year, all stocks.

Date                  Bank        Brokerage   401k    roth         student loans   Net
12/29/2019   2389           19835   52506   16500   -20000   71230
7/4/2020         4169            9746   30107   11721   -20000   35743
12/1/2019          11013   0          16159   1054           -26500   1726

Target NW is $500K, goal is to live off <$20K/yr. Also planning on helping mom  for her retirement (~$500/mo). Not sure what my savings rate is right now since I don't follow a budget, but I'm mostly optimized relative to my income. Based on my calculations I should reach that NW around age 30-31, but I guess a lot of things can change by then. Also goal isn't to necessary RE at that age - I'd honestly be happy doing something like baristaFIRE for a few years.

Comments on a few spending categories
- cell phone (on ATT plan, pay $40/month, in theory can cut to $20 with mint given my usage and looking at doing that soon - edit: phone isn't compatbile with mint, will probably wait for mine to be dead prior to switching)
- car use (can WFH 50% of the time, don't bike as often as I could since 5-10 miles each way is above comfort range + midwest winter). Somewhat clown, but I bike for errands ~2-3x/week in non-winter months.
-utilities: internet is $50/month for the cheapest fiber option, and then the $150 is just for electricity which is high (split between 2). It's a smallish apartment, not sure what we can do to improve significantly, but plan on doing more investigating this year. - edit: realized my electric bill is around $75/mo, remaining $75 is water, sewage and taxes.
- food: I eat a vegetarian diet which is cheap, don't eat out too frequently (~1-2x/month) since there aren't that many worthwhile options, and when I do it's fast food. My 'splurging' on food would consist of grocery store bought processed food and liquids but I've been getting better about cutting those off
- mindless consumption: I am prone to buying dumb things I don't need or will use. Getting better, and will hopefully continue being considerate for my wallet and the planet. This is where my biggest opportunity is I think (1-3K/yr), I'm going to start budgeting to better understand it.
-travel: I am sort of over travel even pre covid. I still have to travel 1-2x/yr to see family, and outside of that would probably do a vacation somewhere 1-2x/yr with my SO, but nothing expensive.
- student loans: are at 4.5%, I'd refinance but doesn't make sense with the interest/payment moratorium and political climate. As soon as those are lifted I'll probably pay off $10K and refi the remaining 10 (getting ~2.7% fixed rate refi offer on credible/MMM link), unless student loan forgiveness is picking up steam...

Pretty proud of this year, hope I can keep it up :)

Welcome to MMM @0tp - congrats on a great start in life! If you stick around you'll get there in no time!
MMM is a great place to help you stay motivated and on track financially.

7/1/2020: $26,480.37
8/1/2020: $40,657.65

Well, okay then! A large year-end bonus plus another good month in the markets made December quite a month. Obviously it was a great year for me financially, even though it was hard in lots of other ways. I'm very grateful to have retained my employment when so many did not.

Happy New Year to all -- best of luck to everyone and I'll see you soon in the next thread!

Holy shite did you burn up this thread @mckaylabaloney -- Well done!  You are well on your way to freedom.  I would say "good luck" in the next thread, but you don't need it.  You're on a mission!

I do not include my savings to buy expensive "fun items" like new cellphone, electronics etc. as it is not very big. My checking account is also not included as it has money I will likely spend this month. Goal for 2021 is to make it to $100K. - Aiming for June

Net worth:

Nov2020:$76,790 (+$7,814)
Dec2020:$82,778 (+$5,987) 3 paycheck month, and some pretty high investment growth. I didn't max out my 401k, but I still had a pretty good year financially. $38,952 gain year over year which is about 78% of my yearly salary (I put in ~30% of my salary). Good job everyone on meeting goals!

April 2019: €10094.35
May 2019: €11629.87
June 2019: €12728.63
July 2019: €13021,33
August 2019: €10363,95
September 2019: €10338.28
October: €11128.59
November: €11227,46
December: €11991,27
January: €12576,72
February: €11904,39
March: €10425,32
April: €11830,70
May: €12154,67
June: €14634,19
July: €15345,09
August: €16444,46
September: €17108,60
October: €16687,93
November: €17762,62
December: €19386,94

Goals for 2020:
Savings: €5250
Investments: €14750

My stretch goal was €20k at the end of 2020. I actually didn't really think this was going to be possible unless the market really, really really helped me along. Well, it turns out I just about made it, without the market even helping out that much (gains about 2% this year which is already way more than I had expected). I ended up with a little less cash than I had wanted and a little more in investments. In 2021, money in my savings account will be a priority. I have about €3k-ish now, I had planned on €5k, and I'm thinking of saving up to €10k. Maybe not all of that this year. €10k is about a year's worth of expenses which is maybe on the high side, but on an average income I think that's the right amount of money to have. We also have some money set aside for home maintanance but I don't track that as part of my net worth, because that's designated for spending (eventually).

My goal for 2021 is €35.000. Savings €10.000 and investments €25.000. Again very ambitious, but I like a challenge. I expect the stock market might go down a bit over the coming months when the economic damage from Covid becomes clear - higher unemployment, less spending. A lot of the damage has been hidden by the stimulus programs from our government but when those end, there will be some damage.

Right now, my investments are in a post-tax brokerage account (the majority) and a bit in a pre-tax private pension account. In my country we can only put a small amount of money into a pre-tax account every year so that's not a huge amount of money. As from January 2021, I will add a pot of pre-tax pension savings from a previous employer to my tracking. It's not much, about €2000 now, but I don't work there anymore and now it's fully under my control. I can't access it until retirement age but I can make the investment decisions so I figured I should start tracking it.

**a disappointing year on this thread--my savings was hit by a kitchen renovation (a faucet leak ruined our counter and it snowballed from there). I was out of work for 3.5 months due to Covid, did too much stress-shopping & I also lent my sister $5K towards a house down-payment but I feel okay moving into 2021 with clear goals of less spending/more saving.

Very disappointing indeed! ;) You were unemployed, paid for unexpected maintenance on your home, helped out a family member and you still ended up with more money than you started the year with!

Tracking net worth, goal is £100K rather than $100K :). Very hopeful I might be able to hit this before the end of 2021! I'm grateful my net worth has remained largely on track despite the rocky market conditions in the first half of this year. The growth mostly happened in the second half of the year when the market recovered as for a lot of 2020 I had a significant pay cut (which I'm not sure when I'll be paid back for just yet sadly). Also my student loan will be gone by the middle of the year which will free up cash for extra savings, so all in all 2021 is looking positive.

EOY 12.2016 - (-£10,250)
EOY 12.2017 - £4,360
EOY 12.2018 - £40,620
EOY 12.2019 - £62,523
EOY 12.2020 - £82,420
01.2021 - £84,647 (+2,227)

Assets = £86,220
Student loans = (£1,573)

ha...thanks for calling me out on that @Imma --sometimes it's easy to get down on our progress but a better option is to keep moving forward and be grateful!

Jan 01, 2020: $74,276 (+1.56%, +$1,138)
Feb 06, 2020: $73,621 (-0.88%, -$655)
March 05, 2020: $74,517 (+1.22%, +$896)
No data for April, I lost my interest seeing the losses :)
May 05, 2020: $68,620 (-8.59%, -$5,897)
June 04, 2020: $70,345 (+2.51%, +$1,725)

Jan 04, 2020: $83,207 (+2.38%, +$1,931 <- same as in Nov :) )

My SR was again quite bad, 51% (last year 59%), so the total yearly SR was a disappointing 60% (a 2,26°% drop from last year).
Investments were okay, I received some missing payments from domaining, so apart from the excessive spending, it was a nice improvement.

Goals for 2021:
- 63%+ SR
- $100k by the end of 2021
- A bit more aggressive portfolio building (risky bond/stock ETFs: 55% -> 60%, stocks 0% -> 5%)
- 10x efforts on domain business (net profit: $3.5k -> $7k)

12/1/2020: $56,152 (+2,210)
1/8/2021: $63512 (+7,360)

Extra money this month because of the stimulus (3k into a savings acct for roof replacement) but even without it we started contributing much more to our retirement accounts (adios credit cards) I dont know on our income level if we will ever be able to max them out but this is a good start. Hope to keep the same savings rate over the entire year, pay for our roof in cash, and tuck a little away for emergencies. Would love to reach 100k by 10/1/2021 although im not sure what to expect from this year market wise. I took a paycut and benefit cut in 2020, which i wont see any increase in pay until 2022. Just going to keep pushing forward. Happy New Year everyone!

Oct 2019- $1000
Nov 2019- $2340
Dec 2019- $2779
Jan 2020- $5658
Feb 2020- $5539
Mar 2020- $5024
Apr 2020- $5444
May 2020- $8302  (wherein I finally got some of unemployment)
June 2020- $20864 (wherein I got more unemployment plus the EIDL)
mid July 2020- $31724 (got the rest of the backpay, woohoo!)
7/31/20- $33340
9/2/20- $36366
9/17/20 - $42978
10/2/20- $43800
10/31/20- $47854
11/11/20- $53709
12/23/20- $64158
1/8/21- $69542

Hit almost $70k despite spending almost $1k in the last month on backpacking gear, whoops!  Getting my partner set up and needed to upgrade to 2 person tent.
I will be selling a few things tho to make up for this.

My stocks have been doing great, particularly positions in GBTC, MSTR.  Don't want to rely on this tho (and yo- I am VERY diversified, don't worry) so trying to double down on saving $$ on groceries (see my groceries journal on this site) and bank bonuses again, had taken some time off.

Hi everyone. I'm not quite out of the 10k thread yet but just realised that all going well, I should be by next year. Posting here already as a bit of extra motivation.

P.S. 10k is the goal for my fledgling ETF account plus an ordinary savings account (emergency fund). Once I join here I shall make myself feel better by also adding in the amounts in various pensions. Last time I checked I think I had just passed the 30k mark. Must go on the hunt for passwords and login information again.

Tracking investments, emergency fund and additional pension investments (all to be used to retire together with SO!)
(not tracking company pension investments, house value and current accounts)

15 May 2020: EUR 17,034 (started tracking)
15 December 2020: EUR 23,325

13 January 2021: EUR 24,006
(2021 goal: EUR 35K)

With a market like this, the amounts just go up!
No salary increase this year due to COVID19, which is understandable in the business the company is in. Hope to still be able to get to my goal at the end of the year, just trying to put as much funds in my accounts as possible. With an extended lockdown here in Dutchieland a no-spending month will be easy!

Great to see the progress of all others. I do not see anybody whose amounts went down, so keep up the good work.

Just come to have a little vent. I'm very much in the looong middle ground of this race at 65k invested and I'm starting to get really itchy feet.

I dont even want to spend the money, I'm just grumpy about how long it is taking. It feels like the push forward to the next major milestone of 75k is a long way away.

Ok, rant over. Thanks everyone.

Thanks mate. Yeah you're right, I had similar feelings at around the 30-40k mark. Guess there's a reason that not many people do this!

I've been there @Stubblestache.  It took me about 12 years to reach 100k.  If your savings is pretty automated, maybe take some time away from watching the stache grow and focus on other things for a while.  There were a couple times in my journey where I had to do that because it seemed so agonizingly slow.   It's kind of like a bucket filling up drip by drip -- I figured if it's filling it doesn't need me there watching it three times a day haha.  You'll get there!

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm just being a moaner and impatient :D

I wish I could step away but I get paid variable amounts each month so have to be a bit more hands on with it all. That's a good suggestion though @Trifele , I'll have a think of how I could spend less time glaring at the 'stash and willing it to get bigger.

Yeah in that case (having to be hands on) it's trickier to find that balance.  But a lot of good Life happens during our road to FIRE . . . we just gotta figure out how to enjoy it while simultaneously accumulating

Hi guys,

My N/W grew by £2,069.06 to a new total of £42,771.24

Markets did most of the heavy lifting.  My investments were at -24% (compared to what I'd invested) 10 months ago, compared to over +30% today.  That's crazy, right?  :')

Still getting paid less with this current lockdown.  Still saving for my wedding.  Once things get back to normal and I'm married I really think my progress should skyrocket.

Hope you're all keeping well and staying safe....

Making steady progress, especially now that I have a 2nd part time job. I also did an uber frugal January, and it's amazing to see the progress that can be made just by cutting most spending outside of rent/food.

10/02/2020- $14835.83
11/13/2020- $16110.56
12/11/2020- $16675.72
01/08/2021- $19310.15
01/22/2021- $20533.24

Great work @Mountain moustache --I agree that an uber frugal month really highlights how money can slip away when we are spending unnecessarily :)

@Serendip - give yourself credit, you are saving in spite of everything from kitchen renovations to helping out family, that's just life trying to interfere with your goals:).
You are almost 70% percent there.

@DieHard_772 it is thanks to you that I persevered past $50K you know that, don't you?:). This second $50K is so much easier mainly because I've reached all my other goals, but even I am surprised that it looks like I might hit that second $50K within 1.5yrs compared to 2.5yrs for the first round.
$100K seemed so far out of my reach that I almost didn't even try.
Perseverance is key.
