Goal: $100K by Dec 31, 2021

$  4,588 June 2017
$ 10,117 Dec 2017

$ 10,715 Jan 2018
$ 31,034 Dec 2018

$ 31,094 Jan 2019
$ 50,000 Dec 2019

$ 53,000 Jan 2020
$ 56,000 Feb 2020

Update - $58K Mar 2020
Projected for April - $60K ~

I am not expecting any losses only continued gains/interest for another 16 months.
This is all nothing but a cash cushion, in various CDs or savings accounts for just such an emergency as we are currently facing.
Meanwhile, Mr. R's portfolio is taking a severe beating - not what you hope for when you planned to retire in three years.

So you're holding all this money in cash?  If you don't mind me probing, why do you need such a high cash buffer?  Surely now is a brilliant time to use some of this cash to buy stocks on the cheap?

Apologies if that sounds judgemental, I'm just intrigued.

Aaaaaand it's gone! My first market crash, and similarly telling how cash heavy I currently am. Investments are down roughly 24% and I feel guilty of market timing because I dumped excess cash, "earmarked for DCA anyway" I remember thinking, into the market at once. I did this three times and all above the current market price haha. Next month's objective is just to only invest at the regular, automated, intervals.

Just ten days before Corona really broke down I flew back from a weeklong hiking trip in Spain's Basque country. Having walked on the old Camino de Santiago trail between the French border and the town of Guernica. Even though my feet are still recovering from blisters and it rained every day it was dangerously addictive, allround gorgeous and suprisingly cheap. Lucky timing there, currently on social distancing only, but a lock-down might still happen.

Tracking net worth.

EOY 12.2016 - (-£10,250)
EOY 12.2017 - £4,360
EOY 12.2018 - £40,620
EOY 12.2019 - £62,523
01.2020 - £64,537 (+2,314)
02.2020 - £65,716 (+1,179)
03.2020 - £66,908 (+1,192)
04.2020 = £67,146 (+238)

Assets = £70,570
Student loans = (£3,424)

Net worth this month went up slightly which is pretty amazing as most of my investments tanked big time... Still I'm in it for the long haul like everyone else so just waiting for the market rise again.

I do not include my savings to buy expensive "fun items" like new cellphone, electronics etc. as it is not very big. My checking account is also not included as it has money I will likely spend this month. Goal for 2020 is to make it to $75K.

Net worth:
2017:
Dec2017:$7800
2018
Apr2018:$13,200
Aug2018:$22,800
Sep2018: $23,645
Oct2018: $23,658
Nov2018: $23,948 (+$290)
Dec2018: $23,960 (+12)
2019
Jan2019: $27,100 (+3140)
Feb2019: $29,443 (+2343)
Mar2019: $31,603 (+2160)
Apr2019: $33,959 (+2356)
May2019: $33,933 (-$26)
Jun2019: $37,928 (+3995)
Jul2019: $39,736 (+1808)
Aug2019: $39,918 (+182)
Sep2019: $34,179 (-5739)
Oct2019: $38,091 (+3912)
Nov2019: $39,867 (+1776)
Dec2019: $43836 (+$3968)
2020
Jan2020:$ 45,839 (+$2003)
Feb2020: $43,345 (-$2494)
Mar2020:$39,081.45 (-$4264)- Shit-another month down. I was so happy to get out of the 30k's and now I am back again. I added money to the market, and didn't take on any debt. At least I am early enough in my savings that this dip isn't hitting too hard.

01/05/2019:   3.755,46 € (+1.987,76 €)
01/06/2019:   4.814,83 € (+1.059,37 €)
01/07/2019:   5.959,50 € (+1.144,67 €)
01/08/2019:   7.116,94 € (+1.157,44 €)
01/09/2019:   9.855,39 € (+2.738,45 €)
01/10/2019:   9.718,18 € (-    137,21 €)
01/11/2019: 10.726,98 € (+1.008,80 €)
01/12/2019: 11.773,70 € (+1.046,72 €)
01/01/2020: 12.979,27 € (+1.205,57 €)
01/02/2020: 14.363,54 € (+1.384,27 €)
01/03/2020: 15.039,09 € (+675,56 €)

01/04/2020: 15.456,74 € (+417,65 €)

Overall savings still outweighed losses due to the current crisis, but NW growth really slowed down. My budgeting app says I saved 1.355,94 € this month. Increased my monthly contributions to ETF-savings plan to make use of the market dip. I don't believe it has reached bottom yet, but since I'm not confident in being able to call when that might be I'll just stick to my bi-monthly automated plan. Luckily job is really secure for now, but any raises which were kind of overdue are probably out of the question for the near-/midterm.

                  401K   NW
1-1-2018     6455   24k
12-1-2018   9518   37k
4-1-2019    10960  49k

12-29-19     14460   56k
2-02-20       14991  57k
3-01-20       14632   58k

4-01-20       13884   58k

Hanging in there... I've lost about 20% YTD, but I've been throwing close to 50% income into investments. I know I'll appreciate that in a year or two. I can keep it going for another 3-6 months without negative impact on my E-fund.
I'll lower contributions once my E-fund hits a certain point (4 months normal spend) or the discounted stocks are no longer available.
I've been working on a long-term plan for when my investments are about 20x what they are, based on my risk tolerance this time through. I just wish I had a bit extra to throw in right now...

Mar 2019 $14,000
Apr 2019 $12,700
May 2019 $9,500
Jun 2019 $11,500
Jul 2019 $17,000
Aug 2019 $19,900
Sep 2019 $19,900
Oct 2019 $26,200
Nov 2019 $34,500
Dec 2019 $37,200
Jan 2020 $43,700

Feb 2020 $45,400

Got a big tax refund, Corona virus has tanked the market, and I paid a bunch in closing costs to refi my house. Moving forward I'll be saving a bunch on interest every month. I'm surprised to see things still going up this month, all things considered.

Mar 2020 $45,300

Turns out the coronavirus was not done with the markets. I ended up cancelling my refinance right at the end of my rescission period and locked in an even lower rate. So I got my closing costs back on the old refinance ($3800), but haven't had to pay closing costs on the new refinance yet. I'll be paying those hopefully sometime in April, but also getting a stimulus check so that should those should almost cancel each other out. Who knows where the market will be in a month.

Editing to add: I noticed that in spite of this market volatility I am up over 30K compared to one year ago. How cool is that?!

Looks like I missed last quarter's update, I bolded the one I appear to have missed & the newest update.

4/1/18 - 8,288.95
11/14/18 - 17,977.82
3/30/19 - 24,649.79
7/1/19 - 29,604.18
10/1/19 - 31,878.15
1/1/20 - 36,198.66
4/1/20 - 35,304.66

Bit of a bummer having my first decrease in a quarter, but still chugging along. Throwing as much money into the market as I can, not upset about my net worth still being 10K higher than it was at this time last year. It's a slow race for me. :)

Mid March 2019 - 45,815
20 June 2019 - 50,890
Mid September 2019 - 57,608

1 March 2020 - 72,765
18 March 2020 - 68,436
1 April 2020 - 71,465

Back up, onwards! Buying all the way down started paying off with the market bounce. I still have a job, and saving a lot. It's all about being greedy when others are fearful now. Hoping I can keep the job, stay frugal, and get ahead. Good to be back in black in most places. Expecting a big quarterly 401k that should push me back up to my peak.

Hello everyone! It is my first time posting in this thread, I just made by way over from the race to $10k thread which I just surpassed.

Here is a basic breakdown of the numbers as of the end of the day today:

Total Cash/Cash Equivalents: $31,642
Total Liabilities: $20,131

Net Worth: $11,511

Virtually all of my liabilities are student loans. I also have some minor balances on my credit cards, which I pay off monthly. I've been aggressively attacking the student loans (see my participation in the student loan challenge if curious) and have made steady progress.

As for asset composition,  20% are in checking accounts, 13% is in my HSA and 67% is in my 401k.

Goal: $100K by Dec 31, 2021

$  4,588 June 2017
$ 10,117 Dec 2017

$ 10,715 Jan 2018
$ 31,034 Dec 2018

$ 31,094 Jan 2019
$ 50,000 Dec 2019

$ 53,000 Jan 2020
$ 56,000 Feb 2020

@Manchester
Easy answer - since Mr. R. is almost 60 and planning to retire in about two years but is presently still working (his job is considered essential so no loss of income) we want to be in a position where we can leave his portfolio alone and give it time to recover rather than drawing from it.
I think we are plenty bold to still fully contribute to his 401K each month.

We have no debt, a paid-for home, paid for vehicles...
The plan is to hit $100K by EOY 2021 - end of story.

I do agree with you that now is a good time to accumulate extra stocks while they are cheap.
But, in our case at almost 60 and 71 years old, we think we are being rather calm if not to say bold to stay in the market and do our usual contributions no matter what happens during this global financial crisis.
Who knows if we survive this pandemic and who knows what the world will look like this time next year or how long it will take the market to recover.

Money is an emotional beast and this cash lets me sleep at night:).
If all our funds were flapping in the winds of the stock market I'd be worried sick. We have other investments besides the 401K but only one of them will remain unaffected by the market - we could draw 3% from it now, but we are letting it sit and grow until he actually retires.

Hard to believe there would come a time when a 3% guaranteed payout would actually sound good.
Having as many alternative sources of income as possible is key - I like FI and I like to have options, a cash stash is just one of those options.

So there you have it Manchester - it is what it is.:)
We all have different circumstances, perspectives, opportunities, and motivations.

December 2019 - $34,820
January 2020 - $36,392
February 2020 - $35,701

Oh how young and naive we were back in February.  But it's okay.  The stocks I'm buying now are gonna make me bank later!  At least that's what I keep telling myself.

I'm still employed, still investing, still alive!  I just spent too much money on groceries and supplies this month, but who didn't?

February 2018: $22,047.46
March 2018: $23,463.61
April 2018: $24,224.19

January 2019: $39,825.43
February 2019" $43,508.66
April 2019: $48,394.91
July 2019: $80,041.52 (Big jump because as a teacher I receive pay that's held back over the year to cover me for the summer -- basically three paycheques at once. I also started to include my pension value in net worth)‬
December 2019: $86,963.15

January 2020: $96,301.56
February 2020: $101,272.15.
March 2020: $102,362.65

Moved up a little bit this month but lost a ton of gains on the market. Hoping the market recovers this month. Did not advance enough this month to feel comfortable that I've truly graduated. from the thread.

Feb 1st 2020 Update:$101,272.15.  WOOT!!

Figure I'll stick around for another month to ensure that I stay over the goal :) This includes $17,405.32 in pension contributions that are hard to value... but since I'm early in my career, if I were to quit today, I'd get back the value of my contributions... so it's worth at least that.

Also includes $4000 in held pay that I'm counting. Essentially, it's pay that I've earned but my district holds onto it until the summer as they think they are helping us budget for the summer when we receive no pay (in reality, I'd much rather have the money up front and earn interest, but sadly that's not an option in this district).

January update: $96,301.56

Some good investment returns last month :). Might be able to reach 100k at the end of the month. Found out my job is secure until the end of June, so it seems very likely by the end of February.

Just contacted my former pension plan. Commuted value is difficult to calculate and I'll get a figure in six months. But I was assured I will get at least my contributions + interest, so: $6,826.01

So my current net worth:
$65,536.55 + $7,678.96 + $6,826.01 = ‬ $80,041.52‬  Woot!

December 1st update: $86,963.15

I received no pay over the summer, but travelled to England and Italy. I also treated myself to a new MacBook for work/pleasure.

With the threat of layoffs/strikes due to our new anti-education government, I will be slowing down my spending drastically. I know I'd be a lot closer to my $100,000 goal if I hadn't spent money on my trip/new technology, but you got to live a little.

I figure I will reach $100,000 by the end of February if my job remains stable.

Hardcore savings and fewer expenses led to small gain this pay period. Although $1,250.00 of this is "dirty" money that I don't really want to count. Only truly a $1,007.60 gain for this pay period.

Most of this, of course, was market rebounding. But I'm happy to say that I'm at my highest NW ever once again, now surpassing (by a whopping $26.83!!) my February 16, 2020 net worth. I am lucky to remain employed. I am lucky to be able to work from home, not drive, cook my meals, and stay indoors and safe. That's what matters right now, but financially I am doing okay, too.

I dumped most of my paycheck this month into savings and am back to a $10K e-fund. I'd like to be in the $12-24k range, and will be at the lower end of that by the end of May. With that said, I am still maxing out my 401(k), IRA, and HSA contributions, and once I have my e-fund in the $15K range I will begin contributing more to my taxable brokerage accounts.

Just wanted to stop by and say y'all are doing great!  Way to stay the course!

My stash was under 100k when the market tanked 50% in 2008.  It was extremely scary, but I kept saving and investing as much as I could.  I am so thankful to my past self that I did it.

Thanks for posting that encouragement! I was planning on dumping a few thousand into my VTSAX when the market went down, then I got (temporarily) laid off. It was so disheartening to see my NW drop down to where it was in June of 2018! Doubly so since I wasn't able to take advantage of the 'sale prices' on shares. But I've redone the numbers and freed up as much as I feel comfortable parting with for the long-term. Staying the savings course!

Well I finally paid off the last of my non-mortgage/student loan debt today and upped my 401k contribution to the max allowed on my plan (15% ~12k per year). I am aiming for a 50% savings rate. I'm excited!

YES ! Back at my NW peak already ! Got some quarterly 401k paid, spending is low due to lockdown, and I have been investing as much as I can while keeping some cash in case I lose employment. The little rebound also helped for sure.
Must. Keep. Going. Great to hear the encouragements, I was barely an adult when the GFC started and had no skin in the game.

Graduation is for September hopefully.

Hey All,

This is my first time posting on this thread, it feels great to be here!  I feel that now is the time to be bold and move forward with bold plans, so here we go...

We surpassed $50k back in February, but then the crash happened.  However, we have since climbed back.

Our Investments and Savings (not including checking accounts)

9/28/18  - $22,949
10/28/18 - $23,952
11/28/18 - $27,878

10/28/19 -$42,209
11/28/19 - $44,478
12/28/19 -$46,408

2/28/20 - $50,466
3/28/20 - $48,609
4/15/20 - $51,095

We are about to add to our savings and investments, thanks to the government stimulus.
Namely, $1000 will go into savings, and $500 more into investments.
All in all, it feels good to see our pile progressing through recent circumstances.

Will update 4/28/20

Onward and upward!!

01/07 2019: €9288.2
01/08/2019: €10.485.05

01/02/2020: €15.260

Goal 01/01/2021: €27.500 Excluding sinking funds for holidays and health insurance, including student loan at 0.01% interest. This is starting off well, because I got a small raise at work.

29/04/2020: €18.449 In three months more than €3000 up despite the market volatility. Very pleased with the results, although I think I will need to spend some fun money soon. I've been very tight for a while now. My savings rate has been 48.45% so far this year and is only on the rise with next months holiday pay (8% of yearly salary).

Dec 19: 20.6k
Jan 20: 22.6k
Feb 20: 24.8k
Mar 20: 23.5k - just a blip on the radar if you have some far OTM puts
Apr 20: 28.7k - off goes the investment rocket again

I can go for a year with unemployment benefits and would just have to stop saving for now. And more than one additional year from my savings.

I like where the train is heading.
Whoop Whoop!

Alright, lots of bouncing around these last couple months but I think I've officially graduated. Onto the 250k thread... job situation is up in the air next year so we'll see if I can continue on a steady path.

Jan 2020 $43,700
Feb 2020 $45,400
Mar 2020 $45,300

Apr 2020 $52,800

Market is back up a lot. We got $3,400 in stimulus, and closed on our refinance. Had to pay a bunch in closing costs, but our payment will over $200 less per month, so we will break even pretty fast.

I'm up $40,100 compared to last April.

01/07/2019:   5.959,50 € (+1.144,67 €)
01/08/2019:   7.116,94 € (+1.157,44 €)
01/09/2019:   9.855,39 € (+2.738,45 €)
01/10/2019:   9.718,18 € (-    137,21 €)
01/11/2019: 10.726,98 € (+1.008,80 €)
01/12/2019: 11.773,70 € (+1.046,72 €)
01/01/2020: 12.979,27 € (+1.205,57 €)

01/03/2020: 15.039,09 € (+   675,56 €)
01/04/2020: 15.456,74 € (+   417,65 €)

01/05/2020: 16.903,74 € (+1.447,00 €)

Net worth growth is actually 2.147,00 € and not 1.447,00 € as noted above. I noticed this month, that since May last year I had included a travel expense advance of 700,00 € in my networth calculations, because it sits in my regular checking account since then, but is actually not my money. I didn't want to recalculate all previous months, but since May 2019 my net worth was actually 700,00 € lower for every month than I had posted. Net worth growth this month was pretty evenly split between savings and the rebound of the markets. Pretty happy that despite the turmoil caused by Coronavirus I didn't have a single down month in 2020. Goal is 25.000,00 € for 01.01.2021.

Tracking net worth.

EOY 12.2016 - (-£10,250)
EOY 12.2017 - £4,360
EOY 12.2018 - £40,620
EOY 12.2019 - £62,523
01.2020 - £64,537 (+2,314)
02.2020 - £65,716 (+1,179)
03.2020 - £66,908 (+1,192)
04.2020 - £67,146 (+238)
05.2020 - £69,691 (+2,545)

Assets = £73,007
Student loans = (£3,316)

Taken a 50% pay cut temporarily due to covid19 so made very little savings this month, luckily the market bounce back has had a good effect and is responsible for most of the net worth increase this month.

Net Worth
Dec 2019 = $32,211.58
Jan 2020 = $33,874.65 (+ $1,663.07)
Feb 2020 = $36,738.94 (+ $2,864.29)
Mar 2020 = $31,221.02 (- $5,517.92)
April 2020 = $41,641.53 (+ $10,420.51)

What a roller coaster. I tossed $1000 of my stimulus check into my emergency fund, so that was a nice jump, and it was a five-paycheck month so I had a little extra to throw at loans. But most of this gain is the market.

Unfortunately I've had to adjust my savings goals down, because I just got word that budget cuts mean there won't be a full-time job for me this year after all... oh well. I really like where I work, but I suppose once the job market recovers a bit I should start looking.

2020 savings goals:
$10,250.00 / $19,000 to student loans
$4,123.98 / $12,000 to investments
$14,373.98 / $31,000 total

IT HAS HAPPENED!

Though it feels a bit like cheating, because of the stimulus. Though I guess we could consider it a wash since that money was used to take care of some legal planning that my wife and I decided to undertake due to COVID.

My posts in this thread (and the prior thread) have been about tracking my own journey and finances so I could probably hang around in this thread another month to see what the market does, however, my wife and I have been integrating our finances more and more so the lines have blurred a bit so it makes sense for me/us to move onto the 100k to 250k thread.

Continued luck to everyone in the challenge. Hope to see you all soon in the next one!
