Just wanted to stop by and say y'all are doing great!  Way to stay the course!

My stash was under 100k when the market tanked 50% in 2008.  It was extremely scary, but I kept saving and investing as much as I could.  I am so thankful to my past self that I did it.

Thanks for posting that encouragement! I was planning on dumping a few thousand into my VTSAX when the market went down, then I got (temporarily) laid off. It was so disheartening to see my NW drop down to where it was in June of 2018! Doubly so since I wasn't able to take advantage of the 'sale prices' on shares. But I've redone the numbers and freed up as much as I feel comfortable parting with for the long-term. Staying the savings course!

Well I finally paid off the last of my non-mortgage/student loan debt today and upped my 401k contribution to the max allowed on my plan (15% ~12k per year). I am aiming for a 50% savings rate. I'm excited!

                    401K          IRA          Total
Jan 2018:   $1,050        $1,230      $2,280
Jan 2019:   $6,800        $3,500      $10,300
Jan 2020:   $12,100      $6,600      $18,700
Feb 2020:   $12,500      $6,500      $18,000
Mar 2020:   $12,700      $6,100      $18,800

20 June 2019 - 50,890
Mid September 2019 - 57,608
15 December 2019 - 65,794
15 January 2020 - 69,388
15 February 2020 - 76,452

18 March 2020 - 68,436
1 April 2020 - 71,465
15 April 2020 - 77,936

YES ! Back at my NW peak already ! Got some quarterly 401k paid, spending is low due to lockdown, and I have been investing as much as I can while keeping some cash in case I lose employment. The little rebound also helped for sure.
Must. Keep. Going. Great to hear the encouragements, I was barely an adult when the GFC started and had no skin in the game.

Graduation is for September hopefully.

Nov 20, 2019 -- $113,800
January 15, 2020 -- $120,900
February 15, 2020 -- $136,916
March 17, 2020 -- $65,556
April 15, 2020 -- $97,329

The market is roaring back already. Despite poor savings in the last few weeks, my leveraging is putting in the work. Might be out of here sooner than I expected.

My line of work has been halted at this point (non-essential healthcare, close contact with people so not allowed to practice currently). I've been out of work over a month and am gratefully receiving emergency gov't benefits and considering options if I cannot go back to my career. Strange to think about--strange year!

Hey All,

This is my first time posting on this thread, it feels great to be here!  I feel that now is the time to be bold and move forward with bold plans, so here we go...

We surpassed $50k back in February, but then the crash happened.  However, we have since climbed back.

Our Investments and Savings (not including checking accounts)

9/28/18  - $22,949
10/28/18 - $23,952
11/28/18 - $27,878
1/28/19 - $28,853
2/28/19 - $31,682
3/28/19 - $32,684
4/28/19 - $35,011
5/28/19 - $35,838
6/28/19 - $38,276
7/28/19 - $40,607
8/28/19 - $40,508
9/28/19 - $42,168
10/28/19 -$42,209
11/28/19 - $44,478
12/28/19 -$46,408
1/28/20 - $49,115
2/28/20 - $50,466
3/28/20 - $48,609
4/15/20 - $51,095

We are about to add to our savings and investments, thanks to the government stimulus.
Namely, $1000 will go into savings, and $500 more into investments.
All in all, it feels good to see our pile progressing through recent circumstances.

Will update 4/28/20

Onward and upward!!

01/06/2018: -€60
01/01/2019: €2875.28
01/07 2019: €9288.2
01/08/2019: €10.485.05
01/09/2019: 11554.85

26/11/2019: €14,311.49

01/02/2020: €15.260

Goal 01/01/2021: €27.500 Excluding sinking funds for holidays and health insurance, including student loan at 0.01% interest. This is starting off well, because I got a small raise at work.

29/04/2020: €18.449 In three months more than €3000 up despite the market volatility. Very pleased with the results, although I think I will need to spend some fun money soon. I've been very tight for a while now. My savings rate has been 48.45% so far this year and is only on the rise with next months holiday pay (8% of yearly salary).

Dec 19: 20.6k
Jan 20: 22.6k
Feb 20: 24.8k
Mar 20: 23.5k - just a blip on the radar if you have some far OTM puts
Apr 20: 28.7k - off goes the investment rocket again

I can go for a year with unemployment benefits and would just have to stop saving for now. And more than one additional year from my savings.

I like where the train is heading.
Whoop Whoop!

Alright, lots of bouncing around these last couple months but I think I've officially graduated. Onto the 250k thread... job situation is up in the air next year so we'll see if I can continue on a steady path.

January 2019: $39,825.43
February 2019" $43,508.66
April 2019: $48,394.91
July 2019: $80,041.52 (Big jump because as a teacher I receive pay that's held back over the year to cover me for the summer -- basically three paycheques at once. I also started to include my pension value in net worth)‬
December 2019: $86,963.15

January 2020: $96,301.56
February 2020: $101,272.15.
March 2020: $102,362.65

Moved up a little bit this month but lost a ton of gains on the market. Hoping the market recovers this month. Did not advance enough this month to feel comfortable that I've truly graduated. from the thread.

Feb 1st 2020 Update:$101,272.15.  WOOT!!

Figure I'll stick around for another month to ensure that I stay over the goal :) This includes $17,405.32 in pension contributions that are hard to value... but since I'm early in my career, if I were to quit today, I'd get back the value of my contributions... so it's worth at least that.

Also includes $4000 in held pay that I'm counting. Essentially, it's pay that I've earned but my district holds onto it until the summer as they think they are helping us budget for the summer when we receive no pay (in reality, I'd much rather have the money up front and earn interest, but sadly that's not an option in this district).

January update: $96,301.56

Some good investment returns last month :). Might be able to reach 100k at the end of the month. Found out my job is secure until the end of June, so it seems very likely by the end of February.

Just contacted my former pension plan. Commuted value is difficult to calculate and I'll get a figure in six months. But I was assured I will get at least my contributions + interest, so: $6,826.01

So my current net worth:
$65,536.55 + $7,678.96 + $6,826.01 = ‬ $80,041.52‬  Woot!

December 1st update: $86,963.15

I received no pay over the summer, but travelled to England and Italy. I also treated myself to a new MacBook for work/pleasure.

With the threat of layoffs/strikes due to our new anti-education government, I will be slowing down my spending drastically. I know I'd be a lot closer to my $100,000 goal if I hadn't spent money on my trip/new technology, but you got to live a little.

I figure I will reach $100,000 by the end of February if my job remains stable.

Jan 2020 $43,700
Feb 2020 $45,400
Mar 2020 $45,300

Apr 2020 $52,800

Market is back up a lot. We got $3,400 in stimulus, and closed on our refinance. Had to pay a bunch in closing costs, but our payment will over $200 less per month, so we will break even pretty fast.

I'm up $40,100 compared to last April.

Net worth:

01/05/2019:   3.755,46 € (+1.987,76 €)
01/06/2019:   4.814,83 € (+1.059,37 €)
01/07/2019:   5.959,50 € (+1.144,67 €)
01/08/2019:   7.116,94 € (+1.157,44 €)
01/09/2019:   9.855,39 € (+2.738,45 €)
01/10/2019:   9.718,18 € (-    137,21 €)
01/11/2019: 10.726,98 € (+1.008,80 €)
01/12/2019: 11.773,70 € (+1.046,72 €)
01/01/2020: 12.979,27 € (+1.205,57 €)
01/02/2020: 14.363,54 € (+1.384,27 €)
01/03/2020: 15.039,09 € (+   675,56 €)
01/04/2020: 15.456,74 € (+   417,65 €)

01/05/2020: 16.903,74 € (+1.447,00 €)

Net worth growth is actually 2.147,00 € and not 1.447,00 € as noted above. I noticed this month, that since May last year I had included a travel expense advance of 700,00 € in my networth calculations, because it sits in my regular checking account since then, but is actually not my money. I didn't want to recalculate all previous months, but since May 2019 my net worth was actually 700,00 € lower for every month than I had posted. Net worth growth this month was pretty evenly split between savings and the rebound of the markets. Pretty happy that despite the turmoil caused by Coronavirus I didn't have a single down month in 2020. Goal is 25.000,00 € for 01.01.2021.

Wow, that's an odd increase. I suppose from my increased E-fund and market growth? Oh, and nearly 70 hours of overtime for the month. Yeah, probably that...

Tracking net worth.

EOY 12.2016 - (-£10,250)
EOY 12.2017 - £4,360
EOY 12.2018 - £40,620
EOY 12.2019 - £62,523
01.2020 - £64,537 (+2,314)
02.2020 - £65,716 (+1,179)
03.2020 - £66,908 (+1,192)
04.2020 - £67,146 (+238)
05.2020 - £69,691 (+2,545)

Assets = £73,007
Student loans = (£3,316)

Taken a 50% pay cut temporarily due to covid19 so made very little savings this month, luckily the market bounce back has had a good effect and is responsible for most of the net worth increase this month.

Net Worth
Dec 2019 = $32,211.58
Jan 2020 = $33,874.65 (+ $1,663.07)
Feb 2020 = $36,738.94 (+ $2,864.29)
Mar 2020 = $31,221.02 (- $5,517.92)
April 2020 = $41,641.53 (+ $10,420.51)

What a roller coaster. I tossed $1000 of my stimulus check into my emergency fund, so that was a nice jump, and it was a five-paycheck month so I had a little extra to throw at loans. But most of this gain is the market.

Unfortunately I've had to adjust my savings goals down, because I just got word that budget cuts mean there won't be a full-time job for me this year after all... oh well. I really like where I work, but I suppose once the job market recovers a bit I should start looking.

2020 savings goals:
$10,250.00 / $19,000 to student loans
$4,123.98 / $12,000 to investments
$14,373.98 / $31,000 total

Hello everyone! It is my first time posting in this thread, I just made by way over from the race to $10k thread which I just surpassed.

Here is a basic breakdown of the numbers as of the end of the day today:

Total Cash/Cash Equivalents: $31,642
Total Liabilities: $20,131

Net Worth: $11,511

Virtually all of my liabilities are student loans. I also have some minor balances on my credit cards, which I pay off monthly. I've been aggressively attacking the student loans (see my participation in the student loan challenge if curious) and have made steady progress.

As for asset composition,  20% are in checking accounts, 13% is in my HSA and 67% is in my 401k.

9/29/17 - $11,511 (First post in thread)
6/30/18 - $36,000
7/31/18 - $38,676
8/31/18 - $40,277
9/30/18 - $50,572
10/31/18 - $46,085
11/30/18 - $48,956
12/31/18 - $46,003
1/31/19 - $53,028
2/28/19 - $58,276
3/31/2019 - $67,340
4/30/2019 - $70,674
5/31/2019 - $69,853
6/30/2019 - $75,757
7/31/2019 - $78,206
8/31/2019 - $83,589
9/30/2019 - $83,292
10/31/2019 - $87,539
11/30/2019 - $98,502
12/31/2019 - $96,225
1/31/2020 - $96,048
2/29/2020 - $94,556
3/31/2020 - $92,438
4/30/2020 - $101,897

April Notes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ9Mtwjeq5g

IT HAS HAPPENED!

Though it feels a bit like cheating, because of the stimulus. Though I guess we could consider it a wash since that money was used to take care of some legal planning that my wife and I decided to undertake due to COVID.

My posts in this thread (and the prior thread) have been about tracking my own journey and finances so I could probably hang around in this thread another month to see what the market does, however, my wife and I have been integrating our finances more and more so the lines have blurred a bit so it makes sense for me/us to move onto the 100k to 250k thread.

Continued luck to everyone in the challenge. Hope to see you all soon in the next one!

Welcome to Nat, congrats to CanadianTeacher and sorry to hear about your job Serendip.

20 Dec 18 - 37,800
Mid March 2019 - 45,815
20 June 2019 - 50,890
Mid September 2019 - 57,608

15 January 2020 - 69,388
15 February 2020 - 76,452

1 April 2020 - 71,465
15 April 2020 - 77,936
1 May 2020 - 78,916

A bit of an underwhelming update but at least it's going up. I was hoping to get over 80k but my super payment is not yet through. I have made a plan to get to 200k before an age milestone. Hopefully I can stick to it. Oscillating between splurge and reduced spend during the lockdown.

I've graduated from NW 1MM but most of my nw is tied up in real estate, and who really knows what that stuff is worth in this era.
I'm going to use this thread to hold my post-tax account accountable.

Shortened my list of months this time and finally posting for May. Back to numbers from the peak before the crash. Problem is...with the thousands of contributions I've made since then I would have been into the 90's by now. wahhhhhhhh.

February 2020: 76,776
March 2020: $81,737
April 2020: Scary

I haven't looked at any of my accounts, including checking, for nearly a month. Still making progress, slow and steady wins the race. I've been working a lot, and not going out much except to support a local restaurant that I like. I'm still "eating out" with really large tips to help keep them afloat and I'm glad that my spending there is helping. Everything else has been pretty much Nintendo Switch and Netflix with some stationary biking thrown in while I'm not working.

Awesome progress on the networth front @lexde.  Props to you on supporting local business. My wife and I have been doing the same, and it feels good.  I'm inspired by your post to keep giving :)

20 Dec 18 - 37,800
Mid March 2019 - 45,815
20 June 2019 - 50,890
Mid September 2019 - 57,608
15 December 2019 - 65,794
15 February 2020 - 76,452
18 March 2020 - 68,436

15 April 2020 - 77,936
1 May 2020 - 78,916
15 May 2020 - 80,396

Not too happy with my savings discipline but I've reached 80k for the first time! Super payments have not arrived yet, so I'm on track for a big jump at June 1 no matter what.
Who knows, I might break 90k for end of financial year if the market holds. I have to keep making efforts and the dollars will take care of themselves.

In 2016, I was at approximately -$5K with $25K in debt (credit card and student loan) and $20K in a Roth IRA.

Happy to say that despite recent markets, I am now at a net worth of $75,831 with around $8K of student loan debt.

I was of course about $10K up before the pandemic hit, but still hoping to get to 100K by the end of the year!

Thanks for everyone here for the inspiration. I was *so close* to moving up to the next thread, but then pandemic. Instead of getting discouraged, I threw some money in my investments to take advantage of the low prices. Working on small things to try to make the jump by the end of the year.

*been out of work 2 months (since Mar 14th).. haven't had to use much of my Emerg Fund due to gov't coverage (I live in Canada and we've had pretty good support). I should be able to return to work part-time within the next month so hopefully can start saving again soon. I actually have saved a good portion of the benefit payments from each month to make sure mortgage payments are covered for the next three/four months without having to worry about my work levels. Very thankful.

This is a bit shocking, honestly. I am guessing it’s from market rebound although I honestly haven’t been tracking. Especially considering that in the last week I have spent $1,500.00 on vet bills for pup. :-(

I’m now $10,068.08 away from graduating this thread. Looks like this might happen in mid-July if things keep up, but we’ll see.

I’m just keeping my head down, saving as much money as I can, and stockpiling cash while maintaining my retirement contributions. I’m up to 7 months of expenses. Not enough, right now. I’m so thankful I am still employed and have a paid-off car. The only things that I have to spend money on are the essentials. I know so many others are not as fortunate.

Hey @okcisok I love that part: "instead of getting discouraged," and then you took advantage of low prices.  that's the key, isn't it?  Staying positive.
Things will always be shifting, but if we keep a positive mindset through it all, we are likely to get out of it even better off :)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
