Wow, it's graduation time! I had a windfall, the market is nuts and I finally have access to 1 of my husbands accounts that I wasn't always getting a monthly update on.
Feel a little iffy about putting my windfall into the market as its so high but trying not to overthink it.

I'll see you on the next thread @okcisok @Optimiser and @Dave15, I like your idea of a charitable donation from your windfall and think I'll follow in your footsteps.

Yaay congratulations, always such an inspiration to see someone graduate!

I'm back up to about $54,750 so if you add our totals together we're there!

Excellent!!  Want to get married?  LOL.

We're not over 100k by much so it'll have to be a cheap courthouse wedding!

I'm up to almost $62,000 so as a couple we did great this month! LOLOL

6/14/2020  $50,099
7/1/2020    $51,768
8/1/2020    $56,146
9/5/2020    $59,010
10/2/2020  $62,038
10/30/2020 $61,623
12/3/2020  $70,606.90

Good progress for November, but that is most likely going to slow down as I've had to resign from my job earlier in the month.  Luckily my side gig provides enough to cover the bills, and I'll try to grow it but won't be able to put quite as much aside as before.  But that is why we save aggressively for times like these and I look forward to getting this back on track.

Welcome to the new posters and congrats to everyone for keeping up on the amazing progress.

March 05, 2020: $74,517 (+1.22%, +$896)
No data for April, I lost my interest seeing the losses :)
May 05, 2020: $68,620 (-8.59%, -$5,897)
June 04, 2020: $70,345 (+2.51%, +$1,725)

Dec 04, 2020: $81,241 (+2.43%, +$1,931)

Investments stagnated, spending skyrocketed (2 birthdays, 2 namedays (yeah, it's a thing in Hungary), Christmas presents, lots of groceries bought in advance, etc.), but domain sales were great. SR was terrible again, I'm hoping in a better one in December.

October 17: $83,855
December 3: $96,456 (number from yesterday because I typed this out but forgot to hit post)

Most of the increase is market gains - I think I've contributed about $4000 since October 17 spread over 401k and brokerage. I try not to check these things too often. :-)

Great job everyone, great to see recent graduates @Gingersnaps and @Dave15!

I spent more this month than any month that did not include international travel expenses. Most of this was expected spending, but my groceries have been creeping up for a while, which I'd like to address.

How are you doing with your groceries spending? I'm also curious what specifically you changed to reduce them.

So inspiring! I'm 22 and relatively new to MMM. I'm aiming to hit $32-33k by Oct 2021. I've been a bit lucky in the past couple of months with some extra cash flowing in, but I'm hoping to keep my savings rate up. Hoping to learn a lot from all of you, and from committing to this challenge!

(Start of)
Oct 2020: $4,757
Nov 2020: $7,823
Dec 2020: $10,385 (Started MMM $100k challenge)

First time poster to this challenge. I'm going to count my investment accounts for this challenge. We also have cash on hand as an emergency fund and for short term savings (about $25k) that my SO would rather not invest... fair enough. We have been tracking for several months but just now joining the challenge.

Aug 2020   $ 7,009.45
Sep 2020   $11,791.74
Oct 2020   $31,492.96*
Nov 2020   $41,576.98

Welcome! You've already made some serious progress this year!

Thank you! We had some cash tied up from when I was job hunting, so that certainly helped when I could dump some in the market. It was bizarre starting to invest more heavily right as the markets went skyward at the end of the year.

I do not include my savings to buy expensive "fun items" like new cellphone, electronics etc. as it is not very big. My checking account is also not included as it has money I will likely spend this month. Goal for 2020 is to make it to $75K.

Net worth:
2017:
Dec2017:$7800
2018
Apr2018:$13,200
Aug2018:$22,800
Sep2018: $23,645
Oct2018: $23,658
Nov2018: $23,948 (+$290)
Dec2018: $23,960 (+12)
2019
Jan2019: $27,100 (+3140)
Feb2019: $29,443 (+2343)
Mar2019: $31,603 (+2160)
Apr2019: $33,959 (+2356)
May2019: $33,933 (-$26)
Jun2019: $37,928 (+3995)
Jul2019: $39,736 (+1808)
Aug2019: $39,918 (+182)
Sep2019: $34,179 (-5739)
Oct2019: $38,091 (+3912)
Nov2019: $39,867 (+1776)
Dec2019: $43836 (+$3968)
2020
Jan2020:$45,839 (+$2003)
Feb2020:$43,345 (-$2494)
Mar2020:$39,081 (-$4264)
Apr2020:$47,551 (+$9470)
May2020:$51,613 (+$4,061)
Jun2020:$56,760 (+$5147)
Jul2020:$61,567 (+$4,807)
Aug2020:$68,102 (+$6,535)
Sep2020:$68,212(+$109)
Oct2020:$68,976 (+$763)
Nov2020: $76,790.63 (+$7,814.4) Yippee! Hit my goal for the year! I am a bit late posting as I just got a new computer, but the number were taken from the end of November for the most part. With a little luck, I should be able to hit the 100k goal easily next year.

Wow, $130k in improvement in just over 3 1/2 years. Not too shabby, @haypug16

10/02/2020- $14835.83
11/13/2020- $16110.56
12/11/2020- $16675.72

I felt like all I did was spend money the past month, so pretty surprised there is any increase at all. I picked up a side job, so I'm excited to start making bigger saving progress every month!

I broke over $10,000 on 9/9/2018. I'm up to $25k as of 2/17/2019.

All said, I'm increasing my NW by about 2k a month based on those figures and would hit 100k in about 37 months putting it out to about March 2022. I believe with an upcoming raise, bonus, and other small windfalls that come and go, I'm looking at a goal of December 31st 2021 to hit 100k. Current salary is 49k.

This is a portion of my first post into this thread, and surprisingly my goal is still on track fairly accurately as of now. Lots of things have changed, but the NW is about 62,000 so doing good!

Woohoo, xmas-bonus :)

i noticed some EUR and GBP being thrown around. Are you guys racing to 100k in your local currency or converting to USD like i do?

I'm going for 100k in €. That's a bit more than 100k $ at this point, but if I would convert the amounts to $ every month, my progress would be linked to the exchange rate.

In Euro. But good point, in $ it would be (currently) easier...

I use GBP and I'm aiming for £100k, rather than $100k.  It's more simple if I keep everything, including targets & goals, in my local currency.

Wow, $130k in improvement in just over 3 1/2 years. Not too shabby, @haypug16

Thanks :) I'm pretty proud. For a while I was heading in the oppisite direction but really happy to have found MMM and worked hard to turn things around.

@haypug16 Yeah I get it. It's like we're riding this wave of life, and we're trying to fill up our buckets with water (ie savings/investing) while also trying not to get knocked overboard or sunk (expenses etc). It can feel a little like trying to build a house on quicksand, lol... Yet we need to keep doing what we know to do, trusting we are on the perfect sand on the beachfront building our dream home.

Life is a trip, and you are doing great!
Best

7/1/2020: $46,295
8/1/2020: $49,461 (+3,166)
9/1/2020: $51,488 (+2,027)
10/1/2020: $52,753 (+1,265)
11/1/2020: $53,942 (+1,189)
12/1/2020: $56,152 (+2,210)

Finally paid off the last of our debts so savings rate should go up in January. But also have some pretty big home expenses coming up in the spring aka a new roof :(

Way to go @mgardner88

Tracking investments, emergency fund and additional pension investments (all to be used to retire together with SO!)
(not tracking company pension investments, house value and current accounts)

15 May 2020: EUR 17,034
15 Jun 2020: EUR 18,160
15 July 2020: EUR 18,809
5 August 2020: EUR 18,332
10 September 2020: EUR 18,999
15 October 2020: EUR 19,604
13 November 2020: EUR 22,707
15 December 2020: EUR 23,325

All Christmas shopping is done, and still an increase this month! No yearend bonus here (Covid impact, I'm just glad my job still exists) but did a transfer from my emergency fund to my pre-tax pension. This will give a nice tax refund next year. Now back to fully funding my emergency fund in 2021, while keeping a small increase in my investments.
Now we're back in a more strict lockdown here in Dutchieland, so no extreme spending in the next couple of weeks. Just the ordinary grocery shopping once a week.

All graduates: congrats! We hope to be able to follow you soon for the next challenge.
All newbies: welcome. You already reached the first 10K. This is the boring period where we only continue doing what we started to get to the first 10K in order to get to 100K.

Wishing you all a healthy holiday period and see you in 2021! (my goal for 2021 is EUR 35K...... there, I said it......)

103.130 €
+ 6.173 €

~3.000 € of the increase comes from updating my Unit-Linked Life Insurance. I am saving 281 € into this thing every month but only get the current amount once or twice per year. The rest was saving and market increase.
Thank you everyone for having me here, I am going to the next thread, even though I am only a small reset away from falling back... Participating here is sooo rewarding!

Next year I am shooting for a 50% savings rate. I am going to create a Case Study (or Journal). See you all at the next thread!

Slightly earlier update than normal as I get paid early next week ahead of Christmas.

My N/W has increased by £1,629.06 to a new total of £40,702.18.

As I've been furloughed recently my pay had decreased again, so my tangible cash has reduced slightly, but my investments are up.  So thanks to the crazy market I've hit my goal of surpassing £40k this year.

I can't help but feel like this has been a wasted year.  My N/W only rose by £12,400.  The pandemic has cost me tens of thousands of pounds in wages.  My wedding had been pushed back a year (which was a shame as we both wanted to start our family ASAP).  Although it's frustrating I also realise I'm in a very fortunate position where I'm not concerned about money.  Finding MMM over 3 years ago has undoubtedly prepared me for this period.

I'm hoping that 2021 is more positive for everyone.  For me personally I want to make a bigger improvement than this year, and my incredibly ambitious target is for my N/W to grow by £25k.

Merry Christmas to you all and thank you for the encouragement over the past 12 months.

Got some paychecks on the way!

Oct 2019- $1000
Nov 2019- $2340
Dec 2019- $2779
Jan 2020- $5658
Feb 2020- $5539
Mar 2020- $5024
Apr 2020- $5444
May 2020- $8302  (wherein I finally got some of unemployment)
June 2020- $20864 (wherein I got more unemployment plus the EIDL)
mid July 2020- $31724 (got the rest of the backpay, woohoo!)
7/31/20- $33340
9/2/20- $36366
9/17/20 - $42978
10/2/20- $43800
10/31/20- $47854
11/11/20- $53709
12/23/20- $64158

Paychecks should be here no later than this Weds- works said they would submit early.
Finally got paid for a gig the first week of September.  Realized also that I hadn't been counting crypto investments which is another cool $960.  Nothing major.  I had a bunch of housecalls although it's now ended.  Couple nice end of year tips from patients which is awesome (also a generous Etsy gift card which is super perfect...tho I'm going to save it for the wedding-or-whatever-we're-calling-it stash)
Don't plan to have any more income after Wednesday- taking some well-deserved time off in the woods to rest up for the new year.

I will say I've been lazy tho with bank bonuses lately, but my partner is wanting me to help him and it's a reminder to get on it myself.  I did a ton in the first half of the year but not as much since.

Woo-ness.  Happy holidays- y'all keep crushing it into 2021.

Thought I'd throw my hat in the ring.  Mainly so I could track my 457/401k in a consolidated place for easy viewing month over month.

Hi all,

New to the forum, but been working on FIRE for the past 2 years. I graduated from college in december 2018, and started an engineering job end of january 2019, I am 25 now. I started off with pretty much no savings (< $5K), around $10K in credit card debt and ~30K in student loans, and moved to a new town to start my job. Luckily I have a killer deal for rent ($265/mo + $80-100 in utilities, due to splitting with 1 roommate), paid cash for a $3.5K car in december 2018 that's been pretty reliable (on the MMM list :)). Bought a car because I live 5-10 miles from work, work is a chemical plant so I hope I get excused for not wanting to live right next to it lol, no properties for rent nearby anyways.

Since a year before graduating I knew FIRE was one of my top goals, prior to that I did not save as much as I could have in college. Even though I went to community college I kinda spent all the extra money on weed and going out, and then once I transferred I lived in a studio for 2 years instead of having roommates. But hey at least I found this path before getting a job.

I'm making good money ($75K starting, now at $82.5K + bonus ($5K this year)), and saving a lot of it. Employer matches 5% of salary plus $5K/yr on 401K. Really started buckling down this year, maxing 401K and roth IRA in addition to investing what's left over. I'd say I earn the money, technically on call 24/7 and can be a stressful job, but average <50 hr/week. Managed to invest a lot of cash right around the COVID dip, and also refinanced my 401K to be 100% VTI equivalent right around then... Sitting at around 12% ROI for the year, all stocks.

Date                  Bank        Brokerage   401k    roth         student loans   Net
12/29/2019   2389           19835   52506   16500   -20000   71230
7/4/2020         4169            9746   30107   11721   -20000   35743
12/1/2019          11013   0          16159   1054           -26500   1726

Target NW is $500K, goal is to live off <$20K/yr. Also planning on helping mom  for her retirement (~$500/mo). Not sure what my savings rate is right now since I don't follow a budget, but I'm mostly optimized relative to my income. Based on my calculations I should reach that NW around age 30-31, but I guess a lot of things can change by then. Also goal isn't to necessary RE at that age - I'd honestly be happy doing something like baristaFIRE for a few years.

Comments on a few spending categories
- cell phone (on ATT plan, pay $40/month, in theory can cut to $20 with mint given my usage and looking at doing that soon - edit: phone isn't compatbile with mint, will probably wait for mine to be dead prior to switching)
- car use (can WFH 50% of the time, don't bike as often as I could since 5-10 miles each way is above comfort range + midwest winter). Somewhat clown, but I bike for errands ~2-3x/week in non-winter months.
-utilities: internet is $50/month for the cheapest fiber option, and then the $150 is just for electricity which is high (split between 2). It's a smallish apartment, not sure what we can do to improve significantly, but plan on doing more investigating this year. - edit: realized my electric bill is around $75/mo, remaining $75 is water, sewage and taxes.
- food: I eat a vegetarian diet which is cheap, don't eat out too frequently (~1-2x/month) since there aren't that many worthwhile options, and when I do it's fast food. My 'splurging' on food would consist of grocery store bought processed food and liquids but I've been getting better about cutting those off
- mindless consumption: I am prone to buying dumb things I don't need or will use. Getting better, and will hopefully continue being considerate for my wallet and the planet. This is where my biggest opportunity is I think (1-3K/yr), I'm going to start budgeting to better understand it.
-travel: I am sort of over travel even pre covid. I still have to travel 1-2x/yr to see family, and outside of that would probably do a vacation somewhere 1-2x/yr with my SO, but nothing expensive.
- student loans: are at 4.5%, I'd refinance but doesn't make sense with the interest/payment moratorium and political climate. As soon as those are lifted I'll probably pay off $10K and refi the remaining 10 (getting ~2.7% fixed rate refi offer on credible/MMM link), unless student loan forgiveness is picking up steam...

Pretty proud of this year, hope I can keep it up :)

Well I officially hit $10,000 at the end of last month, but waited until the end of this month to post in the new thread. I am super happy to be moving on up to this thread.

11/30/20 - SEP Balance $ 15524.45 + Roth $ 1770.76 - Student loan balance $ 6897.45 = $ 10,397.76
12/30/20 - SEP Balance $ 16106.09 + Roth $ 1813.94 - Student loan balance $ 6306.71 = $ 11,613.32

Hoping 2021 is a great year for saving!

Welcome! you sound well on your way. I'm envious about when you found FIRE and started your journey. Your low rent is amazing.

Overall, not a bad pace. Looking forward to 2021. These are measured on the morning of the last day of the month. Hoping to meet the $100k invested goal in 2021. Pace may slow a tad because I had some cash sitting aside to invest... my savings rate in December was 83% and that is unlikely to hold. I'll probably be more about 65% savings rate per month in 2021. I also recognize that the cash amount on hand may seem high, but I normally invest ~4k on the first few days of the next month.

Onward!

Good for you! By quickly stalking your profile for a bit, I noticed quite some similarities between the two of us -- around the same age (24), somewhat similar NW (I have 48k$ for now, but I guess at the end of 2021 I'm where you are now), and we are both working on a PhD.
I'm interested: What field are you doing your PhD? How long have you been working on it and when do you plan to finish?

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
