Well, hello there! I'm returning after nearly two years away from these forums.

In mid-2023, I left my job to spend a year traveling the world. (It was awesome.) I returned last year and kept living off my savings as long as I could, but now I'm back to work -- thankfully, with a renewed sense of motivation (plus a hearty appreciation for biweekly paychecks and employer-paid health insurance premiums).

It's kind of remarkable to see how my net worth barely changed while I was on sabbatical; I made essentially no money for 20 months and spent a lot during that time (I'm not a luxury traveler, but I'm also no budget backpacker, and also I had all my regular expenses at home for the last 8 months), yet my net worth went up over that period. Just goes to show how well the market was doing, I guess (not that I was paying any attention to it when I could, instead, watch the sun set in Sarajevo or whatever).

We will see -- at this point, I hope to stay at my current job much longer than two years (perhaps even until I hit FIRE) and certainly don't see myself leaving voluntarily unless I have a bit more confidence in the stability of...well, everything. I work for really good people and I'm skeptical that I can find a better combination of pay, work-life balance, and benefits (though of course it's possible that the shine may wear off at some point, and any of those things could change too).

Also, having now taken some extended time off, I'm feeling motivated to work toward FIRE rather than toward another long-term break. But that may shift after I've been back in the daily grind for longer.

At some point there may also be an option for me to buy a small (solo) business from a retiring relative; this has some real appeal, but whether I go for it will depend on whether I decide to prioritize stability/early retirement or flexibility/working for myself/etc.

All in all, who knows what opportunities might present themselves in the coming years!

Man I've done a similar thing in 2023 travelling the world for a year. I'm almost same age (37), got married and travelled till we come back, with my pregnant wife! Such and adventure. We ate outside all the times, got to know lot of countries and places and I still think about all those experiences. It's super rewarding thinking about those memories while you are still 'young' and able to do it. Delaying stuff for later doesn't make much sense no matter you are spending your money. As you I came back with more money than what I had when I resigned my job lol. I got a job as soon as I came back and now I'm on track and new to this thread. Congrats. Laid off this month.  I had a large influx of cash from vacation, commission, and severance pay out.  Hopefully I'll pick up another job quickly to not lose any momentum!

My arrival to 300k will be delayed some... not the best month.

I saved $4,400 and my net worth only jumped $1,400.

Part of this was a payroll error that took back $1,250 in 401k contributions. Problem is I told them this months ago and they ignored me and told me to contact the 401k provider instead. This error actually prevented me from maxing out my contributions last year (since the provider wouldn't accept any more contributions - they received the max). But I didn't have the max actually deducted. They gave me a free 1,250 that they now took back.

Travel is an insane 70% of my yearly spend with two trips so far. I'm cutting back on this now as I find a second job.

Goal I have is to save $8k a month with two jobs... let's see if I can get there. It's gonna be tough.

Tough month - turns out I couldn't out save the market drop.

First time my net worth went down since starting. So this is a lesson. First year tracking closely it was all gains. Now I'll have to learn the lesson of sticking with my investing strategy.

Still did everything I could this month and saved over 7k. I include my tax return in "$ In". Now that I have a second job I'm hoping I can save 7k each month to invest.

My arrival to 300k will be delayed for sure.

@zygote Yeah it's tough to be that close and then get a big dip like this. I'm nearing 300k and my arrival will be delayed. Not sure what else to do but to keep at it.

I imagine though that once things pick up with how much you have in your portfolio you'll take off quickly and see some big jumps.

Thanks @TyGuy ... I have a car insurance payment coming up for 6 months so hoping I can put away a bit each month, stay above 90% and then stay above 90% the month that bill hits... that will be the challenge.
