$5250 deposit (half) down on my new boiler...if it wasn't for that, I'd be past $360k! :(

My solar system was just installed and should go live in about a month -- that will be approx a $35k loan, so I'm not entirely sure how to calculate that re: net worth ($50k solar system minus 30% tax credit, overall cash flow positive with power generation & solar credits, but still debt).  I also owe $18,500 on a ~$20k EV that I bought to cut my commuting and overall car costs.  I don't generally count vehicles in my net worth, but it feels wrong to subtract $18k from my net worth when I am not upside down in a loan.

It's kind of an odd situation where I am stacking up debt but increasing cash flow regardless, so I'm not entirely sure how I want to balance that out.  Maybe separate line items for that? I'm keeping my house value static, despite Zillow and Redfin claiming the value is climbing and solar adding value...blah. It's getting way more complicated than it was when I was renting.

A strong close to the year! We have two nice vacations planned for 2020, but even with those, we should be able to push into the $400k's next year, assuming the market doesn't drop too much.

I have a new story being published soon, and we will be getting back a sizable tax refund (it's intentional, to guard against fluctuations in my writing income), so we should have a decent spring.

Congrats to everyone who has recently graduated, and to those new folks entering the thread!

My aggressive goal for 2020 is to save $100k. That should put us over $500k next year, but of course it depends on the market too :)

Mar-18   $249550-INV  $381297 - NW ---> fell below 250K, what a rollercoaster this year has been!
Aug-18 $291293 - INV $ 376293 - NW ---> Writing off 51k, we are building a house.
Sep-18 $292395 - INV $377395 - NW---> Lots of unexpected expenses this month. My job is also not on firm ground. Bad new manager situation. Starting new job search.Anyone have job for me :)
Oct-18  $271500 - INV $357200 - NW ---> Yay volatility
Nov-18 $279200 - INV $365200 - NW ---> Big spending month, over $10000 unexpected spending on Medical expenses, travel reservations, hotels, electronics, shopping deals and gifts. Also got new job, lateral move.
Dec-18 $257500 - INV $344000 - NW ---> Hope this market remains low or flat for next couple of months so I can plough more money in. Happy new year you all! It is interesting that the assets like primary home provide so much stability in rough times. If we have a paid off home or enough cash to pay it off safely invested it provides much safety in difficult times.
Jan-19 $290132 - INV $373300 - NW ---> Big bounce back. But I wish it came after Feb. Its likely there will be more opportunities due to various uncertainties in current short term.
Feb-19 $317800 - INV $406000 - NW ---> Big payday of the year helped cross 300k easily.
Mar-19 $323000 - INV $411500 - NW ---> Not much to say this month. we went on 2nd vacation of the year already and so associated expenses affected the growth.
Apr-19 $337600 - INV $426600 - NW  ---> Expensive month, we paid for family member's medical expenses. Tragic situation at young age. Makes a strong case for big emergency fund.
May-19 $326000 - INV $416000 - NW ---> Yay! Volatility. I was able to add few hundred $s more than usual to investments. @Epor Usually about $6000 a month in addition to savings currently, rest gains or losses in market. It motivates me to compare with high savers, that way I tend to push a little harder or keep consistent. Its a race alright!
Jun-19 $348000 - INV $439000 - NW ---> DW's pregnant with our second baby :), That means now I have to plan for big expenses.. Minivan, Medical expense and more. I am trying convince DW that we can put off buying minivan for another 2 years. Wish me luck!
Jul-19 $355000 - INV $546000 - NW ---> Construction on real estate we were building completed, so added its value back into Net worth.
Aug-19 $349000 - INV ---> Medical expenses and vacation made us go back wards. Market didn't help, but I am happy its flat or down.
Sep-19 $362000 - INV ---> Slow and steady. We are half way through our pregnancy, Just about 4 more months to go!! Its so hard to resist various temptations to spend. minivan, finish basement, build a sunroom. Desires are endless.
Oct-19 $362000 - INV ---> No change, nada.  Spent over $15000 on paying off taxes, credit cards, couple of mortgage payments ahead, medical, travel for next year, daycare for rest of the year. Looks like my journey with you wonderful folks will be longer than I expected. Whew! no end in sight as I see us moving towards big purchases soon, that MINIVAN.
Nov-19 $3750000 - INV
Dec-19 $391000 - INV ---> Very pleased with $162000 increase in investments and cash this year. Thank you downturn in 2018. Lets keep this up people. Happy new year, new decade!

   Dec 1           $351,986 (+13,806)
   Dec 31           $385,426 (+33,440)

Final bonus for the year. 2019 was great ($170,566 Up!), had a beautiful baby daughter and saved more than ever. Looking to have another record year next year.

I don't count my house equity, so this is just investments minus loans (I invest instead of paying off my low interest loans).

Like @hudsoncat and other fellow racers, I am pretty happy to break the $400k mark. This is a little bit of a market coincidence, but we are also up $178k in 12 months, which blows my mind. Seems like just 5 years ago my liquid net worth was slightly negative :). And if we actually sold the house we could very well surpass $500k!

I have felt some job related grumpiness recently so no offense to my fellow racers, but I kinda want to get out of this thread ASAP!

Woah, I did not expect to hit the 500k point just yet... I'm so barely over that I'm not going to post in the next thread until next month if I'm still there.  I feel like a light breeze is all it would take to push me back here.  That is $143,545 increase for the year, only around 60k of that is from my own contributions, the rest was the market.

May 2017: CHF 231'000
June 2017: CHF 235'000

As I paid CHF 2'700 in taxes and the mortgage (CHF 1'380) for the last three months was due I'm satisfied.

July 2017: CHF 243'000 (that was a good month)
August 2017: CHF 247000
September 2017: CHF 256000

I can start the next race.

We are now at CHF 380000.

At the end of 2019 we reached 400'000 CHF. I hope to reach 500'000 at the end of this year, but it will be difficult and probably take a little bit longer. We will see.

Officially $250318 today so I'm in here with my investments and total net worth (475k)! Cool!

Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk

First official entry in this thread:
HSA: $14704
Fidelity (401k, taxable and ROTH IRA: $242075
Vanguard (taxable): $7176

Total: $263955

I am planning on maxing out my ROTH early January and have bumped up my 401k contribution in order to maximize that by end of June as we might move out of the country this summer. As a result, I may need to top off my check with some brokerage account funds. Total NW is about $490k with the roughly $225k in post-transaction cost equity in our primary residence, which we plan to sell prior to the move.

Awesome progress everyone!

$381,913, up $4,544. Up $99,898 yoy. Better than I expected this month thanks to the market. One expensive month down, one to go. The headstone I bought for my dad is about 80% paid off. Bought a new convertible couch/bed to make better use of my studio apt. Was able to get 16 hours of OT on this next paycheck, even though I'm PT. That should help boost the New Year. :)

Happy New Year to all!!!

If things stay the same come Jan 1st the Dandy Pandys will be toodling off :) :) :)
WOW can't believe we did it so soon!
If we did this in 3 years, how long do you think it will take to get to the next goal of 1m? Anyone got a guess for us? Salary etc will stay much the same,  I don't even try to work it out usually- in case of disappointment.
Opposite of disappointed now though!!

I have read before that reaching 333k takes about half the time as 0 to $1M so perhaps that could be an indication. There are so many questions being asked about the returns of the next decade but i am still using slightly lowered projections vs historical averages simply because the latest 10 years were so great.

How long did it take to reach 333k?
Ah I wish it was that easy to figure out- but we only ramped up when we became Mustachians, so the first 333 took a lonnng time.

Exactly. 2019 was only my 4th year of maxing the 401k. Before that I was only putting in $4k - $8k per year.

A little late on doing it, but closing out my race.

Dec 2015 = $288k
Dec 2016 = $331k
Dec 2017 = $440k
Dec 2018 = $458k
March 2019 = $514k
Dec 2019 = $610k

2018 was slow due to high expenses and bad market conditions for some of my investments. 2019 was definitely a good year money wise, but physically and mentally taxing due to all the hours worked.

See you on the next one.

I typically track on the spreadsheet https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AU7U1LTOW0D-_TiWUZJ7OSolSB_ULYQC2ZWSNW5hig0/edit#gid=1302523503, but figured I'd check in here for the end/start of the year.

2018 EOY - $317,638
2019 Q1 - $364,397
2019 Q2 - $388,214
2019 Q3 - $400,870
2019 EOY - $441,666

Hard to believe I'm up $124K year over year, which is well more than I make in a year and over double what I contributed this past year.  I'm hoping to graduate this thread this year, though at this point that's more market dependent than savings dependent.

Happy new year, everyone!

nice work folks. looks like a bunch of us will be moving on up in the coming year. this is the point where the compounding really kicks in.

I'm in here because I got divorced and dropped back. be nice to be out on my own account! I do have a partner now but after my own cautionary tale of nearly hitting fire only to be dragged back then its important that we both achieve Fire independently.

heres to the 20's and moving away from this thread!!

May: $251,222
June: $380,473 <-- combined accounts with DH
July: $423,417
Aug: $436, 413
Sep: $428,402
Oct: $434,691
Nov: $453,570
Dec: $470,545
Jan: $493,101

YOY is hard to calculate since DH and I got married and combined finances halfway through the year. Kinda shocked at the progress since June anyway. Go markets. Early 202o is going to be a bit mixed -- I got a raise (yay!), but a new water filter for the well and saving for a fence and possible marriage penalty taxes will set us back the next month or two. After that we're going to try to live on one income and save the other which should skyrocket things this year. Looking forward to hitting the next thread in early 2020. Happy New Year everyone!

Ended the year with another very good month and finally received a couple of job offers to move and be with my wife after living in separate states for 2 years (and after a very long 8 months of applying and interviewing).  The funds in my bank accounts are getting on the heavy side so I will be correcting that in the next few months.

The good:

Landed a job with NASA.  In my "fuck it, I'm applying for everything" stage that I entered around September, I applied for a bunch of positions that were tangentially related to my knowledge base.  Some of which were positions I felt were above my current level of competency.  Somehow I got an interview for one of these positions and subsequently an offer for it.  End result is a >50% pay raise, and better benefits (access to HSA, 5% 401k match, more vacation and holiday than any position in my current field ever offers, annuity).

The bad:

Moving to a high cost of living area (bay area) so I will feel the full effects of it rather than just half of it from my wife living there (with a roommate).  The adjustment to my new job will be quite extreme I imagine.  Coming from the private sector to a government position in a field related to what I do at a level above where I would think I should be at.  If I can survive my first year, I should be good, but I hate switching jobs so hopefully this is the last one.  Another "bad" is I suspect I will have a really difficult time leaving this position...might end up a FIer without the RE for a while.  We will see.  That annuity has the makings of golden handcuffs though, and NASA seems like it would be a good place to work.

I'm going to just ride out a couple of months while I'm out there and then take a close look at my spending to see where I can cut.  I haven't paid much attention to spending since I started really since it just goes to autopilot after developing the habits.  It will be good to reassess in a new location though to see if I can cut anywhere and to get a better handle on what reasonable expenses are to more accurately project out.

I am setting my target for 2020 year end at 400k.

Slight downtick this month due to an accounting change - I started counting money owed to credit cards as a liability. It was a really good month, though - retirement assets were up almost 5%.

I've graduated to this thread now. I went from 100 - 250k between June 2017 and December 2019, so a year and a half. In line with the concept behind this thread, it Would be pretty cool to take the same amount of time to double my money again but not sure I see that as realistic. An easy riding up up up market has been the ticket so far I feel like.

11/1/2019   $479,049.55
12/1/2019   $498,129.57

Looks like I'll be graduating from here next month *knocks on wood* but January tuition payment will probably keep me here for a couple more months. It's really weird but due to an accident, insurance paid me out a lot more than my old car was worth in November. Was able to get into a used EV for a great price, and hopefully reduced future costs by going EV. Extrapolating one month of energy, electric will cost me about $250/year vs $1,500 in gas in my old vehicle.

Hmmm jinxed myself. The banking app I use to track my networth (along with excel) wasn't updating one of my accounts and I dropped for January 1 when I updated it properly + paid tuition.
01/01/2020 - $488,000

Good news is I got an unexpected $7,000 due to a certain investment that had a surprise pay off. Might be near that half a mill mark by end of the month after all, but likely thread graduation by March. Good luck in 2020 to you all!

Best!

We hit $500,606 today! Headed over to the next thread even though I'm sure we'll hover around the line for a bit.

Time from -40k student debt to $250k: 4.5 years
250 to 500: 9 months

I got a 130k boost from combining accounts with my new husband in June, but the $120k since then is all savings and the market. Can't wait to see what we'll accomplish in 2020. I heard the next $500k goes a lot faster. Two incomes that are both much larger than what I started with back in 2014 helps a lot. I hope we can hit it in three years.

MonthYearNet Worth
Jan2017103,000
Jan2018160,000
Jan2019204,000
Jan2020275,500
Nov.2019255,000
Dec.2019262,000
Jan.2020275,500

I usually get a substantial year end bonus from a side business that should give me some breathing room next month.

The big news for me this year is that my employer took away the company 401k.  So I basically got a 4K pay cut.  It will be discussed at the end of year meeting, but I am looking for suggestions.  I am priced out of Roth IRA, and my only thought is to talk the boss into a simple IRA to get back at least 13K of tax savings investments.

End of the year bonus wasn't quite what is was supposed to be, and still haven't found an alternative for retirements savings.  Feels like things have stopped just stalling and are now starting to roll backwards.  Lost the 401k, health insurance went up, side business went down, property taxes continued to go up, no raise, etc. etc. etc.

Still going way better than the average Joe, just stinks to lose momentum.  We're having the third and final child soon, so I get we're in the muck of it all, but compounding growth waits for no man (or baby).

Looking at potentially buying my first investment property next week.  It is commercial and not residential, but entry level.  Mostly I am looking to pull some money out of the market to diversify and insulate against [pick your reason here].

I don't expect much come next month for some annual expenses I have to pay out, but when 80% of NW is in the market things are starting to get out of my hands on growth/loss.
