5/4/20 - $426k
Went back to all cash mid April.

Back to all cash? How often and what do you use to trigger that?

I assume you know the stats on market timing vs a steady IPS that you can follow, I just wonder what makes someone decide to take huge swings against all common advice.

Once every decade or so,  when it's obvious there's something very,  very wrong with the economy and market.

Of course in the current environment of unlimited QE, zero and potential negative interest,  FED directly buying corporate bonds and may directly buy stocks in the future, going back to cash is a gamble.  Still testing the water to see if it's safe to get back in and seeing market climbed while multiple businesses getting downgraded was enough for me to get back out.

Thank you for responding. Accepted risk is a very personal metric that is usually hard to discuss.

I track every decision I make on my investment accounts in order to prove at a later date if my gut was incorrect (following the metric that more money is always better). It usually keeps me from making calls against the standard couch-potato (keep buying) as I'd see later that I have hamstrung my own progress. Do you look at those decisions in the past or do your records not show that market fears have slowed your growth down?

@oneday - We did purchase already, but utilized the VA loan this time around. Chose not to put anything down and when you include the funding fee for VA loans and fee I'd have to pay a buyers agent if we sold(I'm a realtor so only need to pay out one side), we're negative when it comes to equity in the home currently. We plan to be here minimum 20+ years so the equity will build eventually.

Modest rise to my bottom line last month.  I fully expect more to the downside, but I guess time will tell.  I still have a bit of spending with my new place, guestimating ~$2k for that but then my expenses should become fairly flat.  Probably will spread those purchases over the next couple months.  I need to go back over my expenses since I moved to see where I may be spending too much and get a projection/set goals in my new HCOL location.

79% savings rate this month with no mortgage payment (refinanced last month). It's crazy how little we spend staying at home - it's giving me confidence that in a future downturn, we could easily crank our discretionary spending down to ride out a bad market season.

Also, we are under contract on our first investment property!!

Dec-19 $391000 - INV ---> Very pleased with $162000 increase in investments and cash this year. Thank you downturn in 2018. Lets keep this up people. Happy new year, new decade!
Feb-20 $377000 - INV ---> I was looking forward to market opportunity and here it is. Welcome back Volatility! I am buying.
Mar-20 $320000 - INV ---> I have been buying. Hoping this sale continues for a while. Maxed out IRAs and investing in taxable now. Trying to refinance mortgage to free up some cash-flow. For anyone in this race this is the time to double down.
Apr-20 $374000 - INV ---> Refinanced our 15 yr fixed mortgage to 30 yr fixed and a significant pay increase kicked into effect as well. These monthly cash flow improvements and reduced expenses will boost monthly additions to investments by $1600.
May-20 $403000 - INV ---> Above the previous high. Top is in!

Invested: $270922 (+~7k)
Total net worth: $495000

Ended month on a down day but that's just a blip on the chart soon.

Pleased to have stayed in this thread with $260287 liquid. I had already decided to start maximizing my 401k early so that came in handy. excited to see what will happen when the market starts recovering.
Well, dropped below the lower end of this thread for now: $238521 liquid and about $450k total net worth following a drop in home value as well.

Just gotta keep plugging along.
Back up to about $275k liquid, so firmly back in the thread. Will update with more detail tomorrow.

More specifics: HSA $14912 + 401k/Roth/Taxable $259271 = $274183

Home equity dropped a bit, so would put total NW around $490k

We should know soon how much home equity we really have, our house is going on the market mid June.

This was a great month with some stock vesting and the final few dollars going into pre-tax 401k. Did splurge a bit on a gift for the wife but all in all a great month:

$295108.5 = HSA $16201 + 401k/Roth/Taxable $278907.5

Also sold one of our cars which should bring down expenses by about $500 per month. Fingers crossed for $300k by end of June

$409,674. Up $13,875. Cracked 400k! We found out this week that we will won't be getting raises for at least 12 months. Very happy just to have a job though.

This month should probably still be green, but with most places easing off the stay home orders, I’m saying Covid is past and now we are in aftermath.  I think we are certainly being artificially pumped up here, so I’m still waiting for the bottom to drop again.  Still buying every paycheck though.

$75k of this gain is because I got my house appraised for a refi. Investments are up by almost $13k which is nothing to sneeze at. I now own more than half of my house too. I'm not sure whether to graduate to the next thread or stay here and track investments only, since the house value only helps with fi if I sell it.

I have only been reported the investments in my name because my husband and I each have our own Mint account. The house and mortgage are in my account because I pay it.

Our combined investments are 375,398, which is the number I should really be tracking but it is much more time-consuming to find out. Our combined net worth is 589,198.

I have 3 months of 500k+ time, so I'm about 50/50 for the year on being graduated but I still don't feel like I'm close enough to call myself there.  I'll hang out here another month and if things are still trending up I may move on.  I'm still hoping for the market to go down some more.

Joining - I reevaluated how/what I was tracking for purposes of these races and have decided to include equity in our investment properties.

(IRA/401K/taxable accounts/conservative equity in rental properties):

2/1/2020 $333,916.40
3/1/2020 $386,416.81 (put cash into new rental property)
4/1/2020 $386,032.10
5/1/2020 $404,443.66
6/1/2020 $450,581.83 ($30k of the bump is from an increase in rental property equity based on refinance appraisal)

Note: I'm not working ATM - just started the job search, so no projected graduation currently.

Invenstments are more or less recovered, but I paid federal and state taxes this month bringing cash down significantly.

June 2020292,000

I haven't posted an update in some time, partially because I hid during the dip.  But I'm back to new heights.  Why?  Because I attempted to time the market and, for now at least, it has paid off.  I've posted previously that my job cut the 401k last year, and I rolled it over to an IRA in Dec.  When I did that I sat on it because I was scared to dump it at once/thought the bull run was ending/believed in an election year causing something to happen.  I did not, however, expect what March brought.  Which meant that I plugged almost all of the 401K back into the market during the dip.  I didn't go all in (some still sits on the side) and I didn't time it perfect, but it has led to a pretty good return to put me near $300,000.  Considering I'm struggling to save right now I'm happy to have had some returns to compensate.  Do I think there's another dip coming?  Yes. Do I think that I'll stick to the plan?  Yes.  But the beauty of these races is seeing the small goals checked off along the way.

Well my bounce back put me up in the next race! Greetings...this is the highest my total has ever been. I'm almost afraid to crow about it too much...is that tempting fate? I feel safe among this tribe...

79% savings rate this month with no mortgage payment (refinanced last month). It's crazy how little we spend staying at home - it's giving me confidence that in a future downturn, we could easily crank our discretionary spending down to ride out a bad market season.

Nice! I am in a similar savings bracket (72%) and agree--it is amazing how little you need to spend when confined at home. Makes me think I could retire well before 2025.

On another note: I have been tracking my totals weekly, and just realized there is a small chance that I will graduate this thread at the end of the month.  Currently sitting at 492K.
