I'm currently watching Rectify, from 2017, and I'm really liking it. It's been mentioned here twice in this thread with no details, so I'm diving in.
It was a recommendation, and while it's made by the same director as Breaking Bad which I don't like at all, I'm really liking this one.
It's about this guy in the southern US who's been on death row for 20 years since high school, and his conviction was just stayed due to a complication with the state's case so he gets to go home. His family has no idea how to be around him because he's been on death row for 20 years, and his town is freaking out with who they believe is a killer going free.
There's some dark undertones in all of the communication, really intense interpersonal dynamics in his family, and some tension in whether the state will re try for a new conviction 20 years later. Every single character is so flawed, and here is this guy who came out of jail so splintered that he's lived so much intense life yet still a child at the same time.
Season 1, 10/10 for me. Season 2, 7/10 so far. Ratings for seasons 3 & 4 are higher than 2 per RT.
All of this is free on my library's streaming service.
