Watched most of the pilot of The OA while on a trip recently; seemed alright.

i binged the OA over the weekend. it was good up until the ending then i wondered why i wasted my time. disappointing.

Really? I kinda thought the ending was a great way to tie everything together. I felt it brought deeper meaning to a character that otherwise may have lacked some, as well as tying into a theme of 'destiny' or 'ultimate meaning'.

i guess i missed something. i was all in until the last 15 minutes or so.

It definitely wrapped up quick. I can understand how one would feel it was a bit rushed, or even 'tacked on' to the rest of the story.

Off the beaten path productions we are watching:

The Borgen--Danish tv series about a female prime minister  and the politics of runnng that tiny country

Rake--This is, to me, the best of the current crop of tc shows about down-and-out lawyers. THE AUSTRALIAN VERSION ONLY, MATE! The centeal character likes blow and hookers, but he is smart, witty, and has some well developed relationships that are interesing, his cases are interesting. The show Goliath with Billy Bob Thornton is like this, but it is poorly written. Better Call Saul is really good, I will say, but I think I liked Rake better.

To find good tv series, I look at Golden Globes and SAG nominees, and try those out. I am still working through the list of 2016 and 2015 productions. Between the public library here which has 20,000 dvds and blufray discs, my Netflix dvd subscription at about $8 per month, and my friend's streamng services, I can get ablut anything.

I could write a long list of shows we have watched that I loke, but I think its better to google some of those "best" lists and decide what you will watch. The early classics of modern excellent television shows are, for me

the Wire
Deadwood
the Sopranos

But I have no idea what you have seen, so it is kinda a waste of my time to make lists for you.

The Man in the High Tower
Gomorrah (just started this one, liked the movie)
Firefly
The Ranch (Netflix) / 70s Show (fun brain off TV)
ST-Enterprise (rewatching this one slowly, I may have missed an entire season the first time 'round)
Was watching ST-Voyager but sort of lost interest. I'll finish it eventually.
DW is watching "Z: The Beginning of Everything"
DW likes "Orange is the new Black", Scandal, and stuff like that
Trying to like the "The Grand Tour" and I do like parts of it. Dislike the American driver.
Waiting for the most recent "Top Gear UK" to reach streaming. Saw one episode.
Escape to the Country (BBC UK) is pretty interesting to DW and I during quiet Sunday morn coffee.
Also have surprisingly decided I enjoy Norwegian "Slow TV" when I'm doing something else like taxes last night.

We still need to wait until our kids are in bed before we can watch 'grown up" TV so we don't watch anything frequently.

Whoever suggested The Newsroom, THANK YOU!

I loved this show from its first 10 minutes and it just keeps getting better.  I'm midway through season 2, and it's almost as timely now as it was when it aired (just substitute new names).  No idea what channel it originally aired on, I'm watching on Amazon Prime.

There is honestly TOO much good television these days and keeping up is impossible.  I am old enough to remember when EVERYONE watched Cheers, Simpsons or some other show and the next day everyone talked about it.  Now it's like "Did you watch the Walking Dead?"  "No, sorry, going to watch it this weekend - no spoilers please!"  Or "Have you seen Game of Thrones/Mad Men/Orange is the New Black?"  "Sorry, I don't have HBO/Cable/Netflix".

One more... "the detectorists". A brilliant, understated British series. I watch a lot and this is one of my favourites. :)

Love that series1 What a great cast.

BBC's "Capital" with Toby Jones and Rachael Stirling (among many other brilliant actors) in incredible as well!

I really enjoy dark dramas that span a season or over seasons.

The Fall - UK
The Killing US remake of Danish show.
Rectify - US
Broadchurch - UK and the remake Gracepoint - US
Wallander - UK remake of Swedish show
Top of the Lake - NZ
Marcella - UK
River - UK

"River" was unbelievable! Brilliant, just brilliant.

I liked both the American Crime Story version of the OJ Simpson story AND (even better) the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary.  Both are about 10 hours and both excellent.  I was in engineering school during the original trial and not paying much attention to it, but in retrospect it really was fascinating.  The documentary also spends a lot of time on the circumstances building up to the trial as well as what happened to OJ after, including his arrest.  I could not understand the verdict at all at the time as I thought he was clearly guilty, but after seeing the documentary, I get it, and it really exposes certain things about human nature that are pretty depressing.

Yeah. It's not a horror movie but it has some frightening scenes.

I'll second Friday Night Lights. I don't watch any football and enjoyed the series thoroughly.

Dark Matter is good if you like sci-fi. Same with Expanse, mentioned already.

we had to drop our netflix streaming because we were spending too much time in front of the tv. back to the old school dvd's.

For those with Netflix, the remake of "One Day at A Time" is terrific. (And I am not normally the audience for sitcoms.) Being a Norman Lear show, it includes topical material (immigration, feminism, veterans issues etc) but it is all handled in a very kind, sympathetic way where characters can disagree and still have warm relationships...and it's really funny. Plus Rita Moreno, who plays the grandmother, is incredible--you would never believe she is 85 and she still has more rhythm than half the current actors on Broadway combined. Her character is mostly played very broadly, but there is one episode where she tells her family her immigration story and you get to see why the woman won the Triple Crown of Acting (Emmy, Tony and Oscar in acting categories).

my friend and I finished that last week. It was very well acted. James Gandolfini started out in the role of the attorney, but he died suddenly.
The man who played the sceuffy attorney was excellent!

A couple that I don't think were mentioned yet:

- Peep Show (IMO one of the best comedies, if you're ok with gut wrenching awkwardness)
- BoJack Horseman
- Master of None
- The Last Kingdom
- Suits

Watching

Schitts Creek
Shameless

Both have a great deal to do with money and the lack of it.

Jane the Virgin! The first 2 seasons are on Netflix and the CW always has the 5 most recent episodes available for free on its website. It's in the style of a telenovela, so it's delightfully over the top, but the characters still feel grounded and relate-able.

Breaking Bad.
The Wire
Game of Thrones (I read the books though)

I've started watching "Chance" on Hulu.
So far it's pretty good.
You can get Hulu for free by the way by simply signing up for Bing Rewards and do Bing searches, you accumulate points and it pays for Hulu.

Luther, which was on BBC.  Idris Elba as a morally ambiguous but genius homicide cop; great stuff.
Real Time with Bill Maher
Last Week Tonight w/John Oliver
The Night Manager, miniseries with Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie

+1 to Sherlock, Firefly, Game of Thrones, The Newsroom, The West Wing, The Night Of, and Agents of SHIELD which have all been mentioned.

DH and I initially loved The Magicians, but it's gotten quite far from the books and is turning a bit too high-school-romance/drama.

And Good Eats; I wish I could cook like Alton Brown.  :-)

With 9.1/10 on IMDB and a 96% audience score on RT, many people feel otherwise.

I was curious what shows you like, so I looked back on the first page and saw that you liked The OA (7.9/10 on IMDB and 74% audience score on RT)...which I basically felt was a waste of time. Different strokes, I guess.  : )

Meh. I just felt they took the 'western' theme and beat viewers over the head with it. Again. And again. And again. We get it, it's a space western, the characters don't need to talk like 19th century share-croppers and we don't need to relive every single western trope adventure in every episode. I mean it wasn't a terrible tv show, just had weak writing, scripting and a few weak characters. There was some great characters and fine casting and definitely a workable concept, but I can see why it didn't get extended. Glad other people on IMDB and RT enjoyed it though.

West World and the Leftovers are both great series from HBO.  West World about the nature of consciousness and the Leftovers about the nature of grief.  I like that both shows stay on point pretty much the whole time with these themes.

All of my TV is either from Netflix, Hulu, or DramaFever. Here's what I've been watching lately:

- Superstore
- The Crown
- Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories
- Empire
- Mr Robot
- Goblin
- Boys over Flowers
- Bob's Burgers
- Game of Thrones

I recently watched the pilot of Shots Fired, which looks interesting, and just added Time after Time to my Hulu queue, which looks fun.

I probably watch more TV than I should, but unless it has subtitles I'm generally doing something productive at the same time (drawing, painting, mending something, etc),

Have you seen the "Endeavour" series?  It's about the young detective Morse.  I think it's even better than the Morse series and the Lewis series.  Highly recommend.

Yes very interesting and unusual scifi/action/drama

Another tv show, Season 2 of "Fear the Walking Dead" was very good. I really liked how much of it took place in Mexico and had Spanish as well as English. Tensions between US and Mexican people based on class and culture were interwoven into the drama of the show. It's almost as if trying to escape from the zombie apocalypse was analogous to why people try to cross the border into the US in search of a better situation, and I liked how the show tried to elicit an empathy for the challenges that were faced.

The first two seasons of Homeland were good.

Haven't started on the third season yet.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Grimm yet?  I'm loving it so far.  Loosely based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tales.
