I've started watching Dark on Netflix because after years of seeing it mentioned as one of the best shows to ever exist, I was like "ugh...fine...I'll tolerate dubbing."
I truly despise dubbing, even when people say it's done really well. I found it made Money Heist unwatchable, but frankly, I also found the plot of Money Heist largely unwatchable.
Anyhoo, German shows are definitely more my speed than Spanish shows, so I'm tolerating Dark much better than Money Heist so far.
But still, I'm about 5 episodes in and just kind of bored. The first 3 episodes were a slog, but now that they've done some good world building, I'm reasonably invested because it is really well done.
I'm just not even remotely at a point where I'm excited about it or would recommend it to anyone.
Is it a slow build?? Does it get a lot better??
Because right now it's feeling exactly like The Expanse to me, a show that has been raved about that just doesn't resonate with me.
They do seem to have a key thing in common: they both have a TON of characters, none of whom are very emotionally complex, there's a lot of history to absorb, and a lot of interpersonal dynamics to track, but I'm just not invested in any characters individually.
Other than the little kid who is deaf, she alone has created a sense of investment and has megawatts of charisma.
I would probably watch a whole show about her, but I just can't get very jazzed about anyone else so far.
So should I be patient or is it like The Expanse, one of those litmus test shows that certain personality types love and others find tedious??
