I've still never watched BSG, despite high interest in all things sci-fi for my entire life.

If I were to watch it, which seasons should I watch and which should I avoid to maximize my time/enjoyment ratio?

First season is pretty awesome.  After that?  :S

Unfortunately there's no clear line for where the crap started.  It just slowly crept in more and more often.  Kinda a boiling the frog setup.

About Baby Reindeer’s obligation to obscure real life identifying characteristics:

No, not his obligation although it certainly is unfortunate that with the advent of the Internet, practically anyone can be known.

As for his legal situation, who knows. The UK is different from U.S. in libel laws and that sort of thing.

And I will bet that senior TV executive who raped Gadd is shaking in his boots because he may well be identified as well.

I might be recalling incorrectly, but I seem to remember that the second season was released in two segments with a substantial delay, and it was the second half of season 2 where shit hit the fan pretty much immediately, IIRC that was when the gang rape came in and turned the entire tone of the show sideways with the introduction of the new villain and then it never went back to what it was before.

So my memory says that the first 1.5 seasons was one fantastic show, and then everything from then one was like a deranged version of that same show.

Finally got around to watching the new Kids in the Hall, and it is as gorgeously unhinged as one would expect.

I was basically raised on the original Kids, we really didn't have access to much TV when I was young, but my dad taped Kids and we could freely watch that pretty much whenever we wanted.

Not reeeaaallly appropriate viewing for children, but my dad wasn't exactly known for his conventional parenting approaches, lol.

I'm excited to see 'Outer Range' (Josh Brolin) start a second season tomorrow on Prime!  The first season was incredibly quirky and mysterious...

That's awesome, I had no idea a second season was already on the way! I'll definitely be catching that as I finish up Fallout season 1...also preparing for a new season of Interview with the Vampire and The Boys

I had never given Fargo a chance until earlier this year.  Then once we started we watched through every season in 1-2 months.  Each is fantastic in its own way.

I'm pretty easygoing on enjoying a TV series for what it is, but this second season did not come anywhere close to as good as the first for me.  I'm interested in the fluid concept of what the 'present' is in the story, and trying to keep track of all the threads, but consistency and just having a good story to tell seemed to be lacking.
Spoiler: show
The problem with time travel mechanics is that you wind up not caring about characters.  When they die or suffer, they can always go back in time and have a do over...  The funniest part of this season for me was when Autumn is holding a gun to Amy's head...  I almost burst out laughing at what a dumb 'hostage situation' that was - but would've loved to have seen Autumn pull the trigger!

Ragnarok on Netflix. Quite an interesting modern take on the Norse tales mixed with Young Adult and environmentalism genres. Did not enjoy watching it dubbed in English; watching in Norwegian with English subtitles was much better.

Warrior Nun on Netflix. Interesting early on but then gets a bit boring. Mix of the arcane and a bit of futurism, travel between parallel planes, etc. If you don't watch it, you won't miss anything.

Strong Girl Nam-Soon on Netflix. Korean. Started out OK then there's a bunch of underworld shady characters that make it somewhat interesting. But the special effects are a bit childish... but maybe that's the intent.

That often seems to be the style on K-dramas and I was glad the first one I ever watched was a pretty over-the-top version (think cartoon red cheeks added to make sure we know she's blushing and that kind of thing) as it kind of prepared me for it and so I can find it just funny and not irritating.

I'm only a few episodes into Strong Girl Nam-Soon though. For some reason I decided to take a break by watching Ray Donovan for the first time and I've been binging that to see as much as possible before it leaves Amazon Prime/my Prime free month runs out.

Wife and I stumbled upon Bodkin on Netflix and loved it. It's Will Forte in a lead role and says it's a dark comedy, but ended up being much more mystery. We binged the entire 7 episodes this week. Definitely worth a watch if you're in between shows

Yes we really enjoyed Bodkin too.

We just finished the second series of Blue Lights and I found it just as good as the first. Belfast is such a good setting for a gritty police drama. But we do spend the whole time repeating lines in the accent. The word 'now' especially. Nayeou. It's almost identical to a broad Aussie 'No'.

Dark Matter on Apple TV.  Based off a science fiction book about a physicist that finds his alternate reality counterpart has created a way to move through parallel universes.  We're about halfway through and really enjoying it so far.

Apple TV is a new thing for us and we're doing a free trial month.  Things on our list to watch are--- Lessons in Chemistry (movie, not a show, sorry oops, it is a show), Ted Lasso, and Foundation. Any other suggestions?

Severance! Sooo good. Feels like been waiting for the second season for forever.

Pachinko and Slow Horses are pretty good too. I heard the new series Sugar is good as well.

This looks so silly, but I hope it's fun b/c

1) my interest in European history started with a brief obsession with Jane Grey when I was about 15 and the fact that she's currently trendy fills me with nostalgia; and 2) it looks like this will feed my age-inappropriate crush on Edward Bluemel.

Jane Gray is currently trendy? I did not know.

I’m late to the Killing Eve party, but I’m enjoying it. I essentially liked how they placed episodes in so many major cities across the world. It got a little loosey-goosey in season three with a plot, but I did enjoy very much seeing Villinelle’s family in Russia. I would imagine that rural home  setting setting is realistic.

I KNOW! I was so surprised to learn the elegant drug boss Stringer Bell is an English gentleman. But then, appropriate. And Dominic West, also English. That was a big surprise, too.

I didn't know Dominic West was English until after I saw the show.   It makes this scene where McNulty uses a fake English accent so much more hilarious.

Recommendations/ratings are pretty meh, but I look through Rotten Tomatoes for new shows with synopsis that sound interesting to me.

We downloaded kanopy.com on the recommendation of someone on the UK board after stooping our TV licence and have found good stuff on there. Their tagline is "thoughtful entertainment" and we just browse the quirky, indie type films and usually find something each evening. There's been a few duds but pretty impressed in the main.

I find imdb fairly reliable - anything above an 8 is usually pretty good quality.  Above a 7 is ok if the subject matter is in my wheelhouse.

Occasionally there are highly rated shows that don't fit my eye - for instance, I don't like anime, or any show that has dragons.

I agree. Anything rated over an 8 on IMDb is usually excellent. However, there are some outstanding shows that are inexplicably lower rated. For example, The Patient, written and created by Joel Fields and Joseph Weisberg, the same duo behind the brilliant series The Americans. Last I looked The Patient was rated a 6.x but has since moved up slightly to a 7.0 rating. Still inexplicably low for this terrific series.

I thought I'd seen Something Undone the Canadian thriller mentioned in this thread but I can't find it.

We watched the first episode ages ago but it was so scary I didn't want to come back to it. Well eventually we did and finished Series 1 but I don't quite know what I think of it. It was engaging but I don't understand the ending.

Can someone give me your thoughts on the expanse? I've read all the books and really liked them. I'm not a book to tv/movie snob where it has to match up perfectly, but I'd like for it to be enjoyable having read and enjoyed the books.

The Expanse is really great/top notch sci-fi TV.  Well realized/developed world, good plot, fun characters, pretty decent writing.  The TV show got cancelled and left an awful lot of hanging loose threads though despite efforts to wrap things up.  That said I've never read the books.

My wife and I tried watching it, but didn't make it through the first 2 episodes.  We haven't read the books, but do love sci-fi.  We also like well thought out characters and their decisions, logic, storyline, etc, which this seemed to fail in our critical minds.  I can't remember details, but we kept commenting to each other, "this makes no sense, why is he/she doing that?"

Same. I stuck through two full seasons of the expanse and couldn't get to a point of giving a fuck about or really understanding any of the characters.

I swear The Expanse is a like a litmus test for personality/information processing types of some sort, but I haven't put my finger yet on the characteristics it distinguishes.

It's the same with Outlander. I find there are two types of people, those who absolutely love it and those who find it boring and way too rapey.

I've started watching Dark on Netflix because after years of seeing it mentioned as one of the best shows to ever exist, I was like "ugh...fine...I'll tolerate dubbing."

I truly despise dubbing, even when people say it's done really well. I found it made Money Heist unwatchable, but frankly, I also found the plot of Money Heist largely unwatchable.

Anyhoo, German shows are definitely more my speed than Spanish shows, so I'm tolerating Dark much better than Money Heist so far.

But still, I'm about 5 episodes in and just kind of bored. The first 3 episodes were a slog, but now that they've done some good world building, I'm reasonably invested because it is really well done.

I'm just not even remotely at a point where I'm excited about it or would recommend it to anyone.

Is it a slow build?? Does it get a lot better??

Because right now it's feeling exactly like The Expanse to me, a show that has been raved about that just doesn't resonate with me.

They do seem to have a key thing in common: they both have a TON of characters, none of whom are very emotionally complex, there's a lot of history to absorb, and a lot of interpersonal dynamics to track, but I'm just not invested in any characters individually.

Other than the little kid who is deaf, she alone has created a sense of investment and has megawatts of charisma.

I would probably watch a whole show about her, but I just can't get very jazzed about anyone else so far.

So should I be patient or is it like The Expanse, one of those litmus test shows that certain personality types love and others find tedious??

Dubs are a terrible way to watch a foreign show/movie, IME.  Subtitles are much better because you keep the flavor of the original actors performance.

There are many times when people say to me 'oh, this show has great dubbing, you don't need to use the subtitles', and I (like a fool) give them the benefit of the doubt.  And every time the dubbed version is terrible.  Most recently this happened to me with Lupin, a french show on Netflix.  With the original actors voices it was fun and whimsical.  With the dubbing, it was terrible and I couldn't watch it more than 5 minutes.

Yeah, dubbing drives me absolutely mental, I find it horribly distracting.

I remember one mediocre dubbed show I was watching where the subtitles actually said the opposite of the dubbed dialog. At least that is what I heard.

It was a bad show anyway.

I've started watching Dark on Netflix because after years of seeing it mentioned as one of the best shows to ever exist, I was like "ugh...fine...I'll tolerate dubbing."

I enjoyed Dark a lot because I watched it with a good friend and we talked it through in real time. I felt that it got better as it went along and definitely enjoyed it, but it's not a show I would highly recommend.

We just finished Katla on Netflix. It's  sci-fi set in Iceland during a volcanic eruption. Slow, dark and moody. I liked it.

Yeah, DH and I might not be the right audience for this show. Neither of us are very good at remembering characters' names, even after several seasons of a show, we still refer to most characters by features or behaviours, and he doesn't like talking through a show.

I think it might be a great show for folks who like to puzzle things out, but I don't tend to like shows where I'm just waiting for important information to be revealed.

I prefer shows where each episode contains dialogue and interpersonal interactions that are rich and satisfying in their own right. Dark feels more like a puzzle where every character interaction is a clue of what might come next, but I do not care about the characters, only what their dynamics might mean for how the mystery might play out.

Yes, we watched this a few years ago and enjoyed it.  Weirdly uplifting.

I really liked the first two seasons, but I dropped out during the third.  I found I couldn't keep the characters straight anymore likely because I watched the first two seasons back to back, but had to wait for the third.  And I totally agree on dubbing -- I watched it with subtitles.  I liked it a lot from the start, though, so it may just not be a good fit.
