Don't know if anyone is a Star Trek fan at all, but I'm really enjoying Strange New Worlds. I wasn't a big fan at all of Enterprise. Picard is fine in a nostalgic way, and Discovery isn't bad but is a whole different kind of show. Strange New Worlds is the first one since Voyager to capture the real feel of Star Trek's bread and butter of exploration and handling the challenges that go along with it while still giving it a modern feel.

I'm a big fan of Star Trek TOS, TNG, and Voyager. The new Trek shows from the past 5 years have left me cold, but I'm hearing good things about Strange New Worlds and plan to give it a watch soon!

I've watched a couple episodes of this, and agree that it seems to be the best take on the series to have come out in the past twenty years or so.

Have we talked about Made for Love on this thread yet?

It is on HBO max and it is funny and dark. A woman married to a tech billionaire finds out that he has implanted her with a chip that lets him monitor her and she decides to escape and go back to her pre-billionaire life.

I really enjoyed the novel, so I plan to watch this at some point.

Disenchanted, on Netflix.

I think it's better written than the Simpsons and Futurama. The gags are still quality, but the characters are allowed to change a bit, which they never were in Matt Groening's other shows. And the art and animation are beautiful. Much better than what you would expect.

I'm not sure I think it's better than his other stuff, but it's certainly much better than the rather mediocre reviews would have indicated.

Annika on ABC iView. Google tells me it's on PBS.
It's set in a newly formed Marine Homicide Unit in Scotland and is chock full of competence porn, good acting and writing, great accents and scenery, and best of all it shows a team of people who *like each other and respect each other's work* while they clear murders. There's no Misunderstood Sad Man Workaholic Brooding, it's so refreshing and fun. I will basically watch anything that Nicola Walker is in.

Here are two political shows that have gotten our attention recently, though they're pretty old, from 2015 and 2010 or so.

Servant of the People on Netflix.  This is a comedy about a high school history teacher that's fed up with government corruption and his students push him to run for presidency.  He wins in a surprising victory and the rest of the show is the struggle to reform.  In real life, the main actor of this show, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, ran for president of Ukraine with a push from the team of this show, and won in a surprising victory.  Its amazing to watch him as an actor in his time before the current war his country faces.

Borgen on Netflix.  We've only watched the first episode, but it has very high ratings, and we plan to continue.  Its about the fictional first female prime minister of Denmark, who coincidentally gets elected to power one year prior to the actual first female prime minister of Denmark.

Borgen was great!

Still watching Better Call Saul week by week, with my heart in my mouth.

Also watching Only Murders in the Building, which I enjoy because 1. cozy mystery 2. witty 3. great chemistry between the three leads and 4. mild celebrity crush on Steve Martin.

Finished You're the Worst, which has been my while-folding-laundry/washing-dishes background show for a while. It's trashy and stupid but I kept coming back to it. I guess I'm interested in how they took a bunch of extremely unrelatable and sometimes vile characters and still kind of made me care?

I'm thinking about starting Barry next, anyone recommend?

@sadiesortsitout Barry is really good, at least for the two seasons I have watched.
I would also almost squeeze Annika into the cozy mystery category if you can get access to it.

Your description of Annika sounded great, but then what am I supposed to do without a Sad Man Brooding to lust over?

I've been waiting to start the final season. with Saul, feeling the same way. Big questions on two characters! I'll find out soon enough. I've been avoiding any potential spoilers, so thanks for your discretion!

Anyone else here waiting for The Sandman to come out on Netflix on August 5? I've been a fan of the comics for 15 years!

Started The Mayor of Kingstown on Paramount+ and so far it's pretty good. Been a fan of Jeremy Renner ever since I saw him in "The Town" -- damn his character was crazy but so much fun to watch.

Finished this show a couple days ago and sadly can't recommend it. Jeremy Renner is decent but the plot is so over the top that it strains credulity. This show was a big disappointment for me. Avoid!

Absolutely! I do hope Netflix does it justice. I did the audiobooks recently and can't wait for the show. I held out hope in my little heart that James McAvoy would be Dream...but the guy they have at least looks the part.

Barry is good! Is a fresh and an interesting concept. There is an episode near the end of season two that is… Extremely interesting. Fans of the show either love it or hate it, and I loved it. It is the “little girl “episode.

It could (emphasis on "could") be some of the strongest streaming content of 2022. The source material is brilliant and the stories are amazingly diverse. "24 hours" though is going to be a tough watch no matter what, but Neil has been quoted as saying they had to tone down a few things to keep from totally gutting the audience.

I am trying (and not really succeeding) at keeping my expectations reasonable for this series. It's better to be pleasantly surprised by how good it (hopefully) is, instead of disappointed that it doesn't live up to the source material.

Binge-watched "Breeders" this weekend. I am not sure how to feel about it. I would like to know how this was pitched. "I want to do a realistic show about a verbally abusive dad"?

Just started watching "The Librarians" a TNT series now on Hulu. Had me hooked in the first few minutes. Sort of Indiana Jones or National Treasure meets Leverage (same producer Dean Devlin). Noah Wyle, Rebecca Romijn, Jane Curtin, Bob Newhart, Christian Kane. Oh I hope it continues to be good!

Edit: a few episodes in, it's quite uneven. Some are enjoyable, some are a trainwreck. Might have to see if there's a common director or writing team. I liked the pilot, then it went a bit awry. S1.E5 was directed by Jonathan Frakes, liked this one.

The series is a spin off from the three movies they made on TNT which were all pretty entertaining.

Watched the first episode of "The Resort" last night, which I was seeing lots of mentions of elsewhere.  Chidi from The Good Place and the lady from Palm Springs are the main characters.  After just the first episode, they do not feel believable to me as a couple, at all.  But, the premise of the show seems like it could be interesting and fun, and the characters seemed to click a little more at the end of the episode when they got their "mission", so we'll watch more and see how it goes.

Can't remember if this was mentioned here, but "Keep Breathing" was fantastic. It's a short series on Netflix about a young woman who survives a small plane crash.

It's a tour de force for actress Melissa Barrera who is in almost every scene.  Her emotional range coupled with the demanding physical aspects was amazing.
I'll be looking for anything else she's going to be in.

I thought that the premise of "Keep Breathing" was a bit weak - how she gets herself in to trouble really put me off, would anyone actually do that?  I guess the show gets better or people are better at suspending their disbelief than I am...  I finished the first episode and wasn't hooked.  Might go back to it now after a few positive reviews...

Currently binge-watching The Sandman on Netflix. It's such a good adaptation, it's making me, the longtime fan of the comics, tear up with joy at some scenes.

This scene made me laugh out loud: Ep. 5, at the 7:30 mark.

My wife and I started The Sandman yesterday and got through 4 episodes while it was raining outside. I listened to the graphic novels on audiobook, so I was somewhat familiar with the stories. My wife had never been exposed to it outside of hearing me talk about it, but she absolutely loved it

Watching 'Counterpart' on Prime. A parallel universe with spies going back and forth. It's an interesting concept but not a very good show.

Yeah, we raved about this earlier in the thread. Fantastic show.

Just started season 2. I'm rethinking my assessment. It's really a pretty good show although I don't really care for JK Simmons. He's a good actor but I just can't warm up to him.

Annika breaks the fourth wall which put me off a bit. I enjoyed it otherwise, she's funny.

Yeah it's hard to get that right, but for the most part I think it works, I find Nicola Walker quite hilarious.

Lots of similarities with the superior Unforgotten, feels like they wanted to squeeze a few more solved cases out of her.

Add those to Last Tango In Halifax and it's almost like she is always playing a single parent!

I'm not sure if we've watched Unforgotten yet so I'll add it to my list. Last Tango in Halifax has *both* Nicola Walker AND Lancaster Lancashire in it? How have I not watched this yet??

- MotherFatherSon - a little bit mad, but you know what you are getting with Polly Walker and she delivers it in spades. Plus Richard Gere is excellent as the cartoonishly evil tabloid owner/Murdoch-stand-in. Loved Sarah Lancaster Lancashire as the smiling xenophobe. Lot of good stuff, lot of stuff that made me yell "oh come on!" at the characters.
- Somebody Somewhere - three episodes in and I am pleased that it's been renewed for another season. Feels genuinely Midwestern in its tone and characters, without mocking them.
- Black Bird - a show I am so glad was released on a weekly schedule because ooof it's too brutal to binge.

Black Bird is tonally bizarre. I'm not at all convinced by Taron Egerton in the main role, also dude needs to layoff the steroids, yeesh. However, Paul Walter Hauser as Larry Hall is un-fucking-real.

The whole time I was watching him, I just kept wondering how exactly his characterization came about. Was that the vision of the director or did Hauser generate that more himself? It's such a profoundly effective, compelling, characterization.

I only know Hauser in a bit role as a doofus in Kobra Kai and a few other dumb doofus bit roles. I was astonished at how thoroughly he embodied his take on Hall. I believed him pretty much every single second, which was *horrifying* because it's so disturbing.

Re Sarah Lancashire - hopefully the third series of Happy Valley will hit our shores soon. I loved the first two. My hubby won't watch it because it's too bleak!

I didn't even know there was a third season. I watched Happy Valley years ago.

They just made it this year. I vaguely remember reading that Sarah Lancashire took a bit of a break from acting. It's been way too long since the last series.

Fingers crossed. Ofpym's preferred TV genre is Sad Man Murder Detective with bonus points for Scandi-Noir, so it's a victory when I can push the borders to include a) >1 female character b) less misunderstood male genius c) what if there was some humour? or teamwork? or people who *liked* each other?

I like Egerton in this role because you could see him having that stereotypical masc-charisma that [this depiction of] Hall would respond to. I've seen that particularly homeosocial dynamic in action so that seemed plausible.

However, Paul Walter Hauser as Larry Hall is un-fucking-real.... I was astonished at how thoroughly he embodied his take on Hall. I believed him pretty much every single second, which was *horrifying* because it's so disturbing.
Agreed. It was hard to look away and this genre is very much not in my wheelhouse so it was unusual for me to keep being sucked in. He was outstanding.

Oh that’s great if there’s another season of Happy Valley. I like the setting and the lady detective a lot, I want with her sister. Something that wasn’t set in London was a real plus.

I don't disagree with anything you've said about Egerton's character, I just didn't buy him in the role. He's just too British to get the American masc-charisma quite right.

He's also just not a good enough actor to hold his own against Hauser who was a fucking tank and absolutely rolled over him in every scene.

A stronger actor in Egerton's role would have elevated this show from good to great.

Currently binge-watching The Sandman on Netflix. It's such a good adaptation, it's making me, the longtime fan of the comics, tear up with joy at some scenes.

This scene made me laugh out loud: Ep. 5, at the 7:30 mark.

AHAHAHA

Yup. I also straight up ugly cried through most of Ep. 6 "The Sound of Her Wings." Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death is just **chef's kiss**

I am so very, very happy with this adaptation.
