Are you going to change your name to ThreeCommas when you hit $1B?

Asking the important questions.

haha most definitely!

When I originally created this one, it seemed aspirational at the time...maybe I didn't set the target high enough.

Howdy! Been dawdling in the 500k to $1mil thread with my bougie lifestyle but definitely time to move up to this thread. I originally hit $1mil invested in Sept 2021 but then bought a house in my crazy expensive resort town (gawd, I wish long-term renting was a sustainable option here) and spent a few years building back up investments.

Nov 2015:  Crossed 0k TNW threshold
Apr 2017:  Crossed 250k TNW threshold
Apr 2019:  Crossed 500k TNW threshold
Sept 2021: Crossed $1mil invested 1st time
Dec 2024: TNW $1.53 mil  /  Investments $1,014,909  --> crossed $1mil invested for realz this time

Investments only. Maybe too conservative of an AA. Most of this year’s gain has been saved income. Still, never imagined crossing $1 million in 2024!

Last month of work for a while

Down ~$35K from our high water mark achieved a week ago; however, I certainly won't complain about the year. With the exception of a small amount that went into rrsp's early in Q1, we haven't made any contributions (we took ~$12K out of rrsp mid-year). Will draw down a chunk in 2025 as we've decided to extend our sabbatical for another 8 months or so. :)

Made it to 2M Networth! Like the last thread, going to stick around here until our invested amount eclipses 2M. We have a relatively high (6.625%, ~300k remaining) mortgage that we plan to shovel as much extra cash as we can in 2025 after maxing tax advantaged space so I anticipate not huge investment gains over the next year, but we'll see!

We were over [redacted] for a while but stock market pulled us back under at the last minute. Still +[redacted] for the year is quite respectable.

Following up on last post:

Jan 1st, 2022 update — +220k since the previous update a year before, but basically all of it is due to market returns.

It's been a few years since the last update. Not currently saving, and any gains here (+198K since last time) are due to market returns.

  • 2025: 1411k liquid + 626K home equity: total 2,033k (debt: 4k)
  • 2022: 1261k liquid + 574K home equity: total 1,835k (debt: 0k)
  • 2021: 1059k liquid + 556K home equity: total 1,615k (debt: 0k)
  • 2020: 918k liquid + 478k home equity: total 1,396k (debt: 30k)
  • 2019: 877k liquid + 440k home equity: total 1,317k (debt: 46k)
  • 2018: 1,075k liquid + 409k home equity: total 1,484k (debt: 141k)
  • 2017: 720k liquid + 250k home equity: total 970k (debt: approx 228k)

Hit $2M but staying in this thread because the next update (2026) will be post-divorce, at which point the total will be half or less than it currently is.

I love closing the year and updating my spreadsheet.

Invested assets, long term savings and debts:

12/31/14       $51,962
12/31/15       $92,762
12/31/16      $163,900
12/31/17      $251,415
12/31/18      $330,093 - new job, nice retention bonus from previous job
12/31/19      $519,878 - pension lump sum after leaving old job (rolled into 401k)
12/31/20      $714,958
12/31/21      $993,847 - reached $1M on 11/03 and then, well... yeah.
12/31/22      $855,784
12/31/23    $1,184,285 - reached $1M again on 05/18
12/31/24    $1,547,428 - 50 years old!
---

01/31/24    $1,196,456
02/29/24    $1,249,619
03/31/24    $1,294,026 - maxed out 401(k) including the senior discount catch-up.
04/30/24    $1,266,485 - started Mega Backdoor
05/31/24    $1,336,432
06/30/24    $1,379,520
07/31/24    $1,421,430 - maxed out Mega Backdoor
08/31/24    $1,439,420
09/30/24    $1,507,580
10/31/24    $1,493,422
11/30/24    $1,573,565
12/31/24    $1,547,428

2024 Highlights:
- 🏅$1.5M was my stretch goal for this year. I even got within $5k of $1.6M earlier in December.
- 🏅I am now officially FI, but still far from RE. Portfolio can sustain up to a 12% loss before I cross the FI line again on the way down.

2024 Review:
- Overall performance: 17.46%.
- Net worth: up $363k (30.66%). Not surprisingly, my best year in $$ terms.
- New contributions: $165k. Also my best year. I had to transfer $75 from my checking account yesterday to make it over that number lol. I don't expect saving that much ever again. This includes $25k that I was owed from 2023 and got back.
- Repartition: 45% contributions, 55% market gains.

- First year doing catch-up contributions
- Preparing for the ramp down to retirement in a few years, I got rid of almost all individual stocks in my Roth IRA. I still have some NVDA with a standing sell order. I also sold some TSLA and some older ESPP shares in my fun money account but the rest has way too much LTCG to sell it all. I'm fine with it (total of individual stocks across all accounts is now just under 5% so I don't really care if they crash). I will sell a little more TSLA tomorrow to fund my backdoor Roth, and will use them if/when I need money.

2025 Outlook:
- Hard to say. I will most probably either change jobs or take a few months off and live off the portfolio.
- This will be the first year of my gliding path towards retirement AA. Current AA is 80/20 with a loose 5% rebalancing band. Target is 60/40 in 2029. 2025 will be 76/24 by end of Q1. I'm still thinking about whether I'll stay there for a few years and rebalance in one big swoop in 2029, or keep a straight line down. I guess it will depend on where I'm at at the end of the year.

Following up to my own comment from December 2020, when we crossed $1 Million in Net Worth.

It took us almost exactly 4 years to but in early December 2024, last month, we have now hit $2 Million in Net Worth.

Balance Sheet looks like this:
$30K Cash
$1,630,000 Investments
$670,0000 Home Value

$330,000 Mortgage
No Other Debt

Updating this so it’s easier for me to have a long standing record of where we came from.

Liquid Net Worth/Total Net Worth
2011-2013: -$100k/-$80k (student loans, finished grad school Dec 2010)
Nov 2013: $115k/$226k (used an inheritance to pay off remaining loans)
Aug 2014: $144k/$307k (start maxing tax advantaged accounts)

Jan 2017: $279k/$430k

Jan 2019: $485k/$612k
Jan 2020: $625k/$741k
Jan 2021: $871k/$996k
Jan 2022: $1.08M/$1.21M
Jan 2023: $951k/$1.1M (went part time Feb 2023)
Jan 2024: $1.21M/$1.58M
Jan 2025: $1.51M/$1.92M

*Notes: starting Jan 2024 TNW will use Zillow estimate for house equity instead of purchase price years ago (approx. $246.5k difference at this moment in time).  TNW is pretty much useless for our FIRE purposes though as we will be in the house for at least 16 more years if not even longer.  Children’s 529 accounts are not accounted for in either numbers as well.

We saved significantly less in 2023 and 2024 due to me going part time at work, the markets went nuts!!

Graduated from the 500k to 1M race and joining this one. I can't believe it.

I'd like to track my investment money for this race. Investment money include retirement accounts, investments in brokerage, and zillow value on rental property. This definition is different from the one I used for 500k-1M race. I recalculated my past amounts based on this criteria.

Year   Investment       Networth
2010          $0        -$48,000
2011       $8,000       -$13,500
2012      $16,000         $9,000
2013      $25,000        $36,000
2014      $68,000       $118,000
2015     $108,000       $148,000
2016     $139,000       $185,000
2017     $166,000       $211,000
2018     $157,000       $209,000
2019     $258,000       $310,000
2020     $342,000       $398,000
2021     $551,000       $641,000
2022     $487,000       $644,000
2023     $672,000       $876,000
2024   $1,031,000     $1,302,000

March 2024: $1,008,621.69
April 2024:  $993,941.18
May 2024:  $1,011,440.30
June 2024:  $1,032,180.34
July 2024:  $1,056,086.06
August 2024:  $1,078,295.67
September 2024:  $1,091,255.49
October 2024:  $1,088,821.21
November 2024:  $1,119,020.43

December 2024: $1,129,727.97

Overall 2024 increase: $181,444.  3rd largest one-year net worth increase, close behind last year.  Pretty good for decreasing savings and instead paying daycare.  On that note, our actually money saved each month is going to fall off a cliff for the foreseeable future, so very happy to already have the savings piled nice and high to drive that NW increase.  Farm had a rough year, so no extra principal paydown, and unlikely to happen in 2025 either.  Just trucking along trying to stay within the budget and enjoy life.  Baby boy is wonderful!  Our net worth went from $40,000 at the beginning of 2014 (not long after graduating college) to shooting up to where we are now.  So awesome to see the accumulation over time.  That said, I expect we will be here for severallll more years as our savings are much lower.

Really feeling the doldrums at this point. We've been five more years-ing it for four years now. Housing is the big issue: costs of buying and renting are both up significantly and we are chasing that.

Hey there ... in those four years you've multiplied your net worth 2.3x! That takes chutzpah. Kudos, and betcha you can do it again.

[/quote

Nice.
We also hit $1 mil in Aug 2020.
We got as high as $1.93 mil in Dec.
As long as the market go up in 2025, we will hit $2 mils.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another year down.

I joined the MMM forums in January of 2015, and now it's January of 2025. Pretty unreal how fast time goes.

In that decade, we've gone from probably around 100k NW (2016 was closer to when we started tracking) to cresting 2.00MM back in Nov/Dec.

If I would have told my early/mid 20 year old self that in 10 years I would have been a multimillionare, I probably would have been impressed. I also would probably wonder why im still working so hard every day haha.

As of Jan 1, we gained $367,000 YoY, easily our best year.

We're at around 1.5mm in the stache. This puts us around what im going to call "barebones" FIRE. The challenge is our somewhat large $2600 mortgage. The 1.5mm covers basically everything but that, and what ill deem "extravegance".

This basically comes in a 2 part process:

Part 1:
To cover our expenses, including all extravegances, is about 80k or 2.0mm in the stache. At a 10% rate + our current savings rate (85k+ annually) it comes surprisingly fast.
$1,500,000 + 10% + $85,000 = $1,735,000
$1,735,000 + 10% + $85,000 = $1,993,500 (Done!)

2 whole average years! Even at a 0% growth rate, ill "buy" the 500k deficit within around 5 years. Surely HOPE I don't have to wait that long but, TBD.

Part 2:
The bigger blocker to actually pulling the plug is going to be what to do about the mortgage. It's $400k, has 25ish years remaining at 2.75%. So it's squarely in the "don't pay this thing off" category. I pay a few hundred a month extra, reguardless. . .
I'll either have to save up enough stache to cover it going forward, or some other strategy. Something to ponder over the next 2-4 years for sure.

-------------

Reguardless, for 2025 im going to be lurking in this thread and the 2m+ thread. Wishing everyone a great 2025!

I get the feeling 2025 will be a tumultuous year for finances (and probably everything else in the world), I'm hoping I'm wrong.  I hit 1M at the end of 2023, and made better progress than expected in 2024, even with the fallback in December.  I've started tracking what assets I have in tax advantaged accounts vice the money I have accessible in bank/brokerage accounts.  I'm currently split with around 850k accessible and 450k tax advantaged.  I'm looking into opening an HSA this year since I believe in March it finally becomes available to military.  I would like to hit 1.5M overall, which would be on target with 8% growth and 75k new money invested. I hope I get surprised with a good year, but I'm bracing for a not so great one.
