well, i bought a spring t-shirt. it has a sloth on it and says "hang in there" and i'm not made of stone, so ...

but i haven't bought anything else! and i'm having a clothing swap with some of my plus size friends on the 26th so that should be a good way to let go of some of the nice things i have that either don't fit me or suit me anymore.

i have to say that, as a life-long fat girl, i have still some plus-size clothing-scarcity issues in there (it is REALLY HARD to find cute clothes as a big girl, y'all). like, it can be hard to get rid of even something that i don't like that much, because lord knows when or if i'll be able to find something better.

anyone else struggle with this? living with the 60% okay pants because to find 80-90% great ones takes so much effort?

I was previously plus sized and found lots of stuff online - you just have to find out what brand cuts suit you.  Granted I was just on the cusp (size 16), so Jcrew and Banana Republic and GAP stocked styles in my size online but not in stores and dept stores always had good stock.

ANYWAY, I lost weight and I thought "yah, I can find more things", but nope, a body is still a body and while I can definitely try on more things in retail stores, I'm still finding the same ratio of what suits me vs. what doesn't.  Like even with losing weight, I still look meh in a pencil skirt.

I think it just takes time to find a style that suits you.

I have a pretty good idea of what suits me, but it's wicked hard to find. (So wicked hard that I started a company to make my ideal garments! Which has since closed).

There are a couple of things that make it difficult.

One is that, perhaps it's outside your experience as an in-betweener, but there really are far fewer designs made for the plus size market, and those designs tend to be both uglier and shittier quality than straight sizes.

The other is that there are specific body proportions that designers are trained to design for and mine isn't one of them. (More on that here.)

So please believe me when I tell you that a bigger gal who wants to look and feel cute in her clothes will generally need to look a lot harder to find those cute clothes than a straight size gal will.

I still have all my dressmaking gear and fabric, so I could potentially sew my own again ... but since I did it as a business I'm still kinda burnt out on it. I could probably challenge myself to at least make a few cute new dresses or skirts for spring.

At any rate, I've spent a lot of time thinking about and trying to address the fashion problems of the plus size woman who wants to look cute. There are more options than there were a few years ago, for sure, but still not a lot by any stretch.

Which is why I generally rely on thrifted, altered items for most of my wardrobe, or simple casual styles from a place like ASOS curve that has easy returns.

Of course now that I work from home I only need to "get dressed" like twice a week so it's a little less important than it was when I had to look halfway decent every day. :)

Sorry for the slightly off topic rant! Back to not shopping!

Currently on a road trip. Torrential rain ruined hiking plans. Stopped at a goodwill to kill some time before dinner and concert.  They sold very little used items, most new dollar store things. Great racks of overstock(?) clothing. So many soft, lovely tshirts for $2.99.  Beautiful sweaters
For 4.99!!

It was a struggle... But I walked away.

Just got invited to a CAbi clothing party.

I love CAbi.
I'm wearing 2 items right now.
I hate to shop and this stuff is so flattering.

Luckily, I have a PTA meeting and cannot attend.  Win!

I just finished reading "the life changing art of tidying up" (highly recommend, there are a few forum threads about it) and now I really want to do a thorough clothing purge. I did one late last year, but I'm now inspired to go even further. However, I'm anxious that I might get rid of some things that don't "inspire joy" but are necessities and will need replacing. But that would mean breaking the no clothes challenge and I don't want to do that!  #mustachianproblems

I totally relate ! I have also been doing a massive declutter and read Marie Kondo's book. I donated many of the clothing items that do not spark joy, however I really don't have many clothes, and don't like much of what I have, so.... I would also be in the position of having hardly any clothes were I to get rid of any more.... I don't want to break this or any challenge, and am hoping for castoffs from friends and coworkers!!! (They have expensive tastes which I don't & also go for more colorful & different styles which is rather refreshing actually to add to the wardrobe.)  .

I think my version of this challenge for this year instead of not buying clothing is not buying *new* clothing.   I'm having a great time and have gotten a few sweaters on Ebay and just got a pair of pants yesterday for $3 at St. Vincent de Paul.  I'm also trying to use what I have and like what I have.  I need to clean my closet.

I like this challenge a lot.  Thanks for organizing it!

Going fairly strong. My favorite work shoes are hanging on by a thread so I found a very similar pair in black and one in pink  I got on sale last week. I am slowly breaking the black pair in now and the pink ones will be next. $34 for two pairs.
Sadly my favorite work pants I have had 3 years have bitten the dust. They became ripped, ragged and too worn out so I cannot wear them to work. They got me though waitressing, bartending, banquet serving and my professional job. I will need to replace my black slacks soon since I only have 1 gray pair that currently fits properly.
So still only picking up dead useful pieces that fill a need, replace a current item, etc.

I did finally order the last of my cosplay outfit: a special blouse and a lace umbrella. My completed outfit will cost $130. Unless I add pumpkin pants or a petticoat. Luckily I will be able to rewear my outfit to many more cosplay events. I will definitely skip the wig since that;s $30-$50 easily.

I am still finding stuff to toss/donate!

This morning I added my wedding dress (non-traditional, and now 3 sizes too big), a white button-down that had yellowed at the pits, and the skirt from the outfit my mom wore to my brother's wedding the year before she died.  I'd been hanging onto it for sentimental reasons, and was thinking the outfit was a dress, but looked at it again today and realized it was a matching top + skirt, and that I could wear the top with skinny jeans.  Keeping the top makes it easier to let go of the skirt, which is not something I'll ever wear.  This also freed up a garment bag so I don't need to buy one for my horse show clothes.  There are several more pieces of summer clothing that might be on the hit list.  I'll probably try the trick of turning the hangers around and donate anything I haven't worn by August.

Haven't purchased anything this month despite randomly clicking on a Sierra Trading Post link this morning and seeing that they've acquired a bunch of past-season SmartWool stuff and have 30% off $100 orders.  I'm sure the same opportunity will be there next spring, so I'm holding off.

The hat, UPF/insect repelling shirt and hiking pants I bought for my trip all were put to good use during work field training this week, so I'm feeling that they were a worthwhile investment.  Nice being comfy in breathable, quick drying pants in the field instead of sweating in a pair of soggy Levi's while my ears and arms get sunburned in a baseball cap and t-shirt.

Ok, I broke! I have 2 prs of winter PJs: one to wear, one to wash. Both have holes and the material is fraying, starting to fall apart. I saw a cheap $15 pair in a style I liked and bought them.  The only question is, which of the 2 daggy ones to throw out?

I'm ready to call April a success!  I got the 'buying' bug when I saw coworkers w/ really cute accessories but then remembered that I had similar beads at home so, just made my self a new necklace and earrings with stuff I already had!

I'm ready to call April a failure.

Purchased two pairs of work flat shoes as the pairs I had "were not giving me joy" (I'm beginning to resent Marie Kondo).
I've been wearing the new shoes every other day so they are not wasteful purchases, just not needed purchases.

I did send 8 items to liketwice.com (including a pair of non-joyful flats) that netted me $31 so that offsets some of the guilt.

I juts figured out how to do some of the category comparison in Mint. The past 12 months, categorized as clothes shopping: $189
The previous year: $1414

Wow!

I do wonder what next year will look like as I worry about the habit coming back. But the mindfulness of already having a lot and not needing anything helps.

Did anyone catch John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight" bit this Sunday? The main story was about fast fashion and child labor, and I thought of this thread. I know for many on this board, part of the no-clothes-shopping is about saving money by breaking consumerist habits, but the clip was an interesting commentary on how the "budget prices" of fast fashion (H&M, Zara, etc.) have larger costs around the globe.

Thought provoking (and another impetus to not buy anymore clothes this year!)

Yes!  I saw the clip.  I've read a few thing about it in the past ("Priceless").  The clip only makes me more resilient in my quest to avoid buying clothes.  If I do need to buy something (might break down and buy new jeans), I will try to buy used first.  If not possible (or if it's an item I would prefer new), then I will be cautious about the sourcing for the clothing.

bahaha, that book just came in for me at the library! can't wait to see what I think. I'm already pretty sure I'm not going to fold my tshirts as carefully as she does.

absolutely! the non-financial costs of buying new crap in general (but clothes are a big one for me) are a huge motivator for me too.

Well, I caved today & purchased some things today. Not technically needed, but I have very few clothes, so I don't feel bad . also, ive donated quite a lot of clothing becausr things were not my style at all anymore, or wrong size. All used from goodwill - 2 pants for sleep ( I don't have any ) . and one tank top in a color I actually like. . total spent : $8.97 .

O , and I put back a lot of items that I didn't really love, but liked . or items I wasn't sure about. Also put back a huge cute purse I was 100% into. I'm super picky about everything, and clothes included. And typically I settle for items that I think are OK, but don't give me that spark of joy Marie Mondo writes about.... So i feel good about buying only things I really love .

I think this is huge! I used to buy stuff just because it was there, sort of, even things I didn't really feel 100% about.

I do have to confess some shoe costs though. $20 to repair a zipper on a sturdy pair of ankle boots (after my replacement pair, with a shorter heel, broke at five months)--I used to wear these all the time, and will probably still wear them once a week once fixed. Also spent $12 to buy a new-to-me pair of good condition leather flats. All my 'clothing' purchases over the last six months have been shoes, which I think indicates that I haven't been happy with what I have to wear and also that I walk a lot and need something that really works. I'll also be spending around $5 to ship back the damaged shoes to the manufacturer in the hopes they will admit they're poorly made and replace them for me.

I don't plan on doing any other shoe spending except perhaps a pair of sandals for summer, depending on how my old ones hold up. Historically, flats and sandals last me for a year or two max before dying, so it's kind of a recurring need, but I'm trying to be more mindful about what I select as replacements.

I have been following along, but not posting since early on in this challenge.  So I am pleased with my progress.

I did crack very early on but I'm still looking at this as a win. I have purchased very few items this year so far for myself.

I have pretty much no interest in shopping these days. I had to take DD shopping for shorts and a bathing suit, I didn't even feel like browsing for myself.

So my clothing costs are way down. I have one item on my wants list, a brown pair of flat sandals.
Maybe I'll find some, maybe I won't. Ehhhh, either way.  I have found that removing the temptations, un subscribing from emails, tossing catalogs, if I don't see it I don't want it.

The husband and I are going to California next week, and vacations are a time when I am notorious for buying a new wardrobe. Tonight, however, I pulled out my summer clothes and shoes and put together six outfits plus decided my bathing suit was good enough. So maybe for the first time ever, I spent $0 for vacation clothes! I did, however, have to pay $5 for shipping after ordering myself an otherwise free very nice Lands End cardigan as part of my company's "logo wear" program.

Unfortunately, the husband is another story. He has put on some pounds since starting his desk job (though he's decided to start biking to work on Monday!), and none of his shorts fit. We're hoping a couple of pairs will get him through the vacation, and it's rarely shorts weather at home, so that should cover him for the summer.

This has been an interesting experience this year. Last year was no problem because I still had what I consider to be ample clothing- to me 4 pants, 8 shirts, 3 dresses, etc. But this year between donating clothing I do not like/ does not fit (Konmari method) and wearing out several items, its becoming a bit more of a challenge. So I am buying items as needed second hand, on clearance, and/or with gift cards so far. And I wait until I find an item that I love which is rare, but is a money saver for sure! it feels good not to settle . I am comfortable with making due with whats left of my wardrobe until I find the right pieces.
Also realizing I need to go for better quality rather than always the cheapest, because certain items wear out so fast!!!

Well, we picked the husband up three pairs of shorts, three T-shirts, and two sweaters for work for $130. A pretty good haul, but it brings his total clothing expenditures for the year to $147 (yikes!). He's pretty tough on his clothes, like an overgrown kid, so the remaining $53 allotted for the year will probably go to a couple pairs of jeans in the fall.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I would like to join for the rest of the year. I already bought some things this year (for about $150) but I'll try to withhold for the rest of the year without any exceptions. The only problem is I have at least 3 weddings this year with mostly very similar guests. But I'll try to borrow some dresses from different friends, try to see if I'll succeed!

1.5 Months in, no new stuff bought. Haven't gone shopping, so no temptations yet. Although I keep thinking I may need some new clothes...

I'm hoping for summer now, so my winterclothes can be stored and I get to wear summerclothes again, which must feel like new after being in the closet for so long :)

I shopped the street for two new-to-me dresses yesterday (love the brownstone tradition of putting stuff out on the stoop). One is very much a fall dress but it's nice to have 'new' things, I admit that I miss this. And if they don't work for me I'll re-sell them or bring to a clothing swap. a friend also says she has some dress for me. Plus now that it's (almost) summer, I'm wearing 'new' clothes, ones that have been sitting in my closet for eight months. I got compliments on a dress and skirt I was feeling iffy on, so will keep those in the rotation this season.

Also discovered that I should definitely have enough shoes (especially with my recent purchase...) to survive the summer. Some sandals and some flats. So not planning on buying anything else on the foot front or on the new seasonal front. Shopping the closet ftw!

So far this year - work socks, $1.99 t-shirt from Value Village, expensive (!) new skirt for a job interview. It was made in Canada and I felt more confident. Wish me luck.

in a thread that has become increasingly about justifying spending, I'm more inclined to think your expense for a job interview is acceptable than people who are saying they got stuff on sale.

I think we need to revisit the idea of "i dont need it" for this thread.

I still haven't bought those shoes I saved for.  I will eventually but I have other canvas shoes that will get me through the summer.

I received 5! free tshirts in the past week. I'd been turning down free things, but these were cute... so I accepted. It still felt like weakness.

this is a good point- thanks for some perspective. my purchases have been a mixed bag, some needed, some justified:
Needed-
1.pants (already wore out! talk about shit quality)
2. second pair of pants to replace first.
3. boots (accidentally ruined by getting oil all over the material while giving a facial)
4. replacement boots (anyone see a pattern?! believe me I am much more careful with my boots and other attire now)
Justified-
1. sandals in a different color (already had one pair of sandals)
2. pants to sleep in (didn't have any, so actually unsure which category to put in as isn't really necessary being NorCal weathers pretty mild...)
3. 2 shirts

I AM going to NEED a pair of shoes for walking/exersizing . the pair ive been using for 4+ years are wrecking my feet , and actually have been uncomfortable for several months. today was the last straw, very painful halfway through my 7 mile treck. they miraculously still have tread though which is crazy since I walk/hike or workout in them everyday (only used for exersize though, nothing else). anyway, I have some money on a card at macy's , ross, and DSW so i'll find one at one of those spots , and seek out sale or clearance.

I am considering changing over my work wardrobe to a capsule/uniform sort of model. It would mean a purge of more clothing (I got rid of about 70% of my work clothing several months back). What I want to wear is a white dress shirt, a colored pull over sweater or cardigan, and dress pants every day. I don't have quite enough shirts to pull it off and end up having to wear a fussy shirt and a blazer - both of which are less comfortable and require more upkeep. The two white shirts I currently have I purchased at Forever 21 and Kohls and both have been more than adequate (e.g. machine wash, tumble dry, hang up - repeat as needed). I am a bit short on pants that fit (just need to lose 10 pounds but can't seem to get there). So, I am considering the purchase of 5 white shirts a <$20 each and 2-3 pairs of dress pants at <$30 each (target, clearance, or Lands End) and a few sweater (less than $20 each) and then chucking just about everything else that doesn't fit that uniform. I am vacillating on just doing it in one fell swoop. It isn't a huge amount of money and would greatly improve my comfort and happiness in terms have having less energy spent on dealing with wardrobe issues and stuff that doesn't fit. I would have more closet space. I would consistently have clothing that is comfortable for work, machine washable (rather than some things that have to be dry cleaned), and clothing that fits....

I used to be so into my clothing - loved putting together outfits and shopping and I just do not have the energy or desire for it any longer.

I think we need to revisit the idea of "i dont need it" for this thread.

this is a good point- thanks for some perspective. my purchases have been a mixed bag, some needed, some justified:
Needed-
1.pants (already wore out! talk about shit quality)
2. second pair of pants to replace first.
3. boots (accidentally ruined by getting oil all over the material while giving a facial)
4. replacement boots (anyone see a pattern?! believe me I am much more careful with my boots and other attire now)
Justified-
1. sandals in a different color (already had one pair of sandals)
2. pants to sleep in (didn't have any, so actually unsure which category to put in as isn't really necessary being NorCal weathers pretty mild...)
3. 2 shirts

I AM going to NEED a pair of shoes for walking/exersizing . the pair ive been using for 4+ years are wrecking my feet , and actually have been uncomfortable for several months. today was the last straw, very painful halfway through my 7 mile treck. they miraculously still have tread though which is crazy since I walk/hike or workout in them everyday (only used for exersize though, nothing else). anyway, I have some money on a card at macy's , ross, and DSW so i'll find one at one of those spots , and seek out sale or clearance.

running / walking shoes are certainly toast after 2 years, I would replace sooner than 4. They are ok for casual wear, but the cushioning / support breaks down long before 4 years of use.

I used to be so into my clothing - loved putting together outfits and shopping and I just do not have the energy or desire for it any longer.

creating a uniform type clothing system is a great idea. can you please start a new thread that details how and covers your experience with it? I think it would be a good place to point people. While I have stopped purchasing clothes, I still have too many. This may help me thin them out.

I'm also interested in the uniform-type idea for work.

I've been able to break my shopping habits.  My wardrobe has been reduced significantly, and I'm looking forward to further cuts.  Right now, I'm in the wear-it-out phase.

I'm still in "wear it out phase" over 2 years later.  My core items have lasted very well: or at least the things that wore quickly are long gone, so I'm only left with the longwearing things. I'm short on work pants, but otherwise all is well. Just unpacked all my winter things and feel I'm swimming in options. If I can make do with the trousers, I'm good for the next season.

I did well today. Needed to find gifts for three people, and used my giftcard for Ross. clothing and a purse on the card, and did not pick up or try on anything for me. Excellent.

Hi.  Figured it's time for me to check in.  I started this challenge, but admit I fell of the wagon a few time.  I won't go into the details/excuses, but I've spent about $55 on clothes so far this year.  Actually adding it up and writing it out it sounds like a lot to me!  I'm dropping a bag off at Savers today.  I'll need strength not to pop in.

I haven't bought anything in spite of trying a few things on when I dropped donations at the op shop.

I'm almost done getting rid of clothing I don't want, inspired  by capsul wardrobe ideas but not conforming to any rules.

I have been sewing and altering all week. Goal: inspire contentment.

I will need to add a few things in the fall. I got rid of a vest I wore a lot the past several winters. I will miss it.  It was too big and too bulky. It was fine when I worked a construction and outdoor related job, but after transitioning to school and office work it felt huge and awkward...  I gave it to goodwill with the intention of buying something with a better fit in fall.

I am going to start a new thread - creating a capsule work wardrobe, or something a long those lines.

Confession time! My cousin was visiting this weekend and because I stayed at her hotel Friday, I had limited space in my purse and opted not to carry a cardigan because the weather forecast looked so warm. Ended up quite chilly the next day, and instead of toughing it out (it then did warm up some later) I ducked into a store and bought a sweater. It was on sale, but still almost $42 (I was in midtown Manhattan). Totally a fail because of poor planning. I'm still doing way better than in any year past though--it wasn't shopping 'just because', and it's the first piece of clothing I paid for this year. Back on the horse for me.

Sadly my favorite work pants I have had 3 years have bitten the dust. They became ripped, ragged and too worn out so I cannot wear them to work...I will need to replace my black slacks soon since I only have 1 gray pair that currently fits properly.
So still only picking up dead useful pieces that fill a need, replace a current item, etc.

So I bought black slacks replacements. Decided to return them since I am not really happy with them. Spent $9 on some socks and decided I would lose some weight. The fact I didn't own more than a couple pairs of exercise type socks (i.e. not thin hello kitty ones or fuzzy ones) is pretty telling. If I lost about 10 pounds my other 2 pairs of slacks would fit perfectly. As of now they are too snug and uncomfy. Hopefully I can drop weight before I need to replace more clothing. A lot of the stuff I owned from college is starting to wear out and the other sized clothes still look brand new so I need to get back into them. In the mean time dress + tights + cardi is my go to outfit.

I haven't. Though I have posted my temptation here. I've also accepted some free things and done some refashioning.  Sewing a pencil skirt this morning. Eta. All from supplies I already had

So I'm still doing well.

So far this year I've only bought the 1 pair of jeans, which is currently the pair of pants I wear 4-5 days a week. I could not have gotten by without them, as I have no other pants to wear to work. I'm still wearing the old patched up jeans on weekend, and change into pajama pants (unless it is warm enough for shorts, which is rarely is) when I get home from work to keep the new jeans in better shape.  I wish I could get away with wearing my maxi-skirt more often, but people at work don't notice if you wear the same jeans everyday, but absolutely would if I wore the same colorful striped skirt.

Haven't bought any shoes. I really need new work shoes, but I'm holding off until my current ones truly die a horrible death (they are close. There are holes in the back of them that are getting a bit more visible).  My tennis shoes need to be replaced as well, but I can handle wearing them a bit longer since I'm not a runner.  This challenge would have been easier if I came into it with excess, but already I owned very few pieces....

Haven't bought any accessories, but since I don't wear them that isn't a temptation.

i bought one shirt, which is surely much less than i would have bought without this challenge on my mind.

i did get some new stuff via a clothing swap, which was super fun!

Going for this already, happy to see the thread. I bought two low priced pairs of slacks and a pair of work shoes that I desperately needed (total cost $95), otherwise I think I can do it for the rest of the year!

I haven't purchased anything clothing, shoes, etc. either. I've donated a LOT of clothes and shoes/boots and accepted a few free items. Two days ago I noticed I wore a hole in one of my last two remaining pairs of jeans. Hopefully the last pair will make it to the end of the year. Or there's a clothing swap with some friends in 2 weeks where I might find a replacement. If not I'll have to start wearing the other pants I don't wear as often.

My level of time to throw away is when my fiance says "homeless people don't want that." Then it gets donated.
That means I retired some pants I had since highschool that were no longer appropriate office wear due to holes in the rear, shredded cuffs, etc. Replaced with goodwill khakis at $5.  Scored free shirt from fellow bargain-hunting coworker who bought $135 designer button-up for $3, tried to give to his son who must not like getting stuff from dad ("it's so uncool").  He knows I love the deals, so brought it in and left it on my desk. I may find the $3 in the budget this month to buy him a coffee for his thoughtfulness.

So I only tend to donate items that just don't fit.  But where should I donate things that "even the homeless shouldn't wear" ...  but could be recycled as rags or quilting as part of the garment is still ok?  Can these items still go to goodwill and they will "recycle" appropriately?

Lise, I know that the Housing works thrift shops in my area sell off clothing as rag lots to raise funds. I now bring them all my stained, unusable stuff (don't have space to store a ton for rags in my apt). Also our local farmers markets take fabric/clothing donations.
