well, i bought a spring t-shirt. it has a sloth on it and says "hang in there" and i'm not made of stone, so ...
but i haven't bought anything else! and i'm having a clothing swap with some of my plus size friends on the 26th so that should be a good way to let go of some of the nice things i have that either don't fit me or suit me anymore.
i have to say that, as a life-long fat girl, i have still some plus-size clothing-scarcity issues in there (it is REALLY HARD to find cute clothes as a big girl, y'all). like, it can be hard to get rid of even something that i don't like that much, because lord knows when or if i'll be able to find something better.
anyone else struggle with this? living with the 60% okay pants because to find 80-90% great ones takes so much effort?
I was previously plus sized and found lots of stuff online - you just have to find out what brand cuts suit you. Granted I was just on the cusp (size 16), so Jcrew and Banana Republic and GAP stocked styles in my size online but not in stores and dept stores always had good stock.
ANYWAY, I lost weight and I thought "yah, I can find more things", but nope, a body is still a body and while I can definitely try on more things in retail stores, I'm still finding the same ratio of what suits me vs. what doesn't. Like even with losing weight, I still look meh in a pencil skirt.
I think it just takes time to find a style that suits you.
I have a pretty good idea of what suits me, but it's wicked hard to find. (So wicked hard that I started a company to make my ideal garments! Which has since closed).
There are a couple of things that make it difficult.
One is that, perhaps it's outside your experience as an in-betweener, but there really are far fewer designs made for the plus size market, and those designs tend to be both uglier and shittier quality than straight sizes.
The other is that there are specific body proportions that designers are trained to design for and mine isn't one of them. (More on that
here.)
So please believe me when I tell you that a bigger gal who wants to look and feel cute in her clothes will generally need to look a lot harder to find those cute clothes than a straight size gal will.
I still have all my dressmaking gear and fabric, so I could potentially sew my own again ... but since I did it as a business I'm still kinda burnt out on it. I could probably challenge myself to at least make a few cute new dresses or skirts for spring.
At any rate, I've spent a lot of time thinking about and trying to address the fashion problems of the plus size woman who wants to look cute. There are more options than there were a few years ago, for sure, but still not a lot by any stretch.
Which is why I generally rely on thrifted, altered items for most of my wardrobe, or simple casual styles from a place like ASOS curve that has easy returns.
Of course now that I work from home I only need to "get dressed" like twice a week so it's a little less important than it was when I had to look halfway decent every day. :)
Sorry for the slightly off topic rant! Back to not shopping!
