Re watched two 80's movies:
Vision Quest, fun wrestling movie set in Spokane starring Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino. Typical sports movie plot of the underdog taking on the hero's challenge, but Modine puts on a charming act as the young overachiever and Fiorentino is typically smoldering.
Rumble Fish, an "art film for teenagers" according to its director, Francis Ford Coppola. I really liked this movie when it came ou,t, I was that weird teen interested in art films I guess.
Starring Matt Dillion, Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane, Dennis Hopper, Nicholas Cage, and with Tom Waits doing Tom Waits things.
The black and white cinematography is brilliant and reminiscent of German Expressionist cinema of the 20's with it's use of shadow and light; the rhythmic soundtrack by Police drummer Stewart Copeland is outstanding and unique.
Upon this re-watch I felt the story was a little weak and the characters not fully fleshed out. The film is of course based on an SE Hinton novel of the same name. She also wrote Tex, The Outsiders, and other teen books. I was a fan of all her books at the time, but only learned recently that she was still a teenager herself when she wrote them! This might be the reason for the shallowness of the characters, but overall a fine film, and considered a cult classic today.
Really worth it just to see Matt Dillion and Diane Lane in all their 80's glory.
