Watched this last night and was impressed, the movie has a musical feel to it. Was happy to see it's the pre-story where he starts off his chocolate business and not another remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

"East of Eden" with James Dean.  He was nominated for an Academy award for Best Actor but it was posthumous since he died the same year, 1955, at age 24.

Great to watch him in the movie but sad to realize his time on earth was so short.

“The Holdovers”.

A movie about a teacher, a student and the school cook who are are not going home for the holidays.  The film is set in a boarding school in 1970.  Paul Giamatti plays the teacher and I think he has been nominated for an Oscar for his role.  A really good movie about two people becoming better humans.

I watched “Holy Spider” an Iranian film about a religious nutjob who kills prostitutes to cleanse his sacred city of Mashad, Iran. Based on a true story. Has graphic scenes.

The film shows how the subjugation of women in that culture plays throughout it in various forms of severity, from head covering shaming to outright absolute killing.

This film was put out in 2022 and shown  in art houses. It’s good timing because the Iranian Congress passed a law last September for even more harsh punishment for women who do not wear their head scarves or dress sufficiently modestly.

Re-watched "Yesterday" on Netflix.  We enjoyed it every bit as much as the first time.

Related: since the first watching, we have frivolously aquired a personalized license plate for our RV. She is E RIG B. I'm shocked at how many people younger  don't get the reference, even when we say her name aloud. I definitely don't want to live in a world without Beatles tunes.

I watched the charming film “Yesterday” on Netflix. It came out in 2019 so, it has been around a while.

It is about a brief time warp event which erases the existence of The Beatles. Only a young, struggling musician knows about their music and he introduces it to the world.

It is sweet and funny.

There is a scene near the end with a man living in a cottage that is poignant.

 Highly recommended.

If you like Detectorists you will like this one.

I saw this in the movie theater and really enjoyed it, too. Terrific acting all around. It was directed by Alexander Payne who has done some other interesting films including: "Election", "Sideways", "About Schmidt".

Netflix:

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar

Only 40 min long, so quick for a late night when you are too tired for a long movie.

I honestly didn't love that one. I watched it along with the other Oscar-nominated short live-action films last weekend and didn't enjoy it as much as the rest of this year's group. The rapid-fire narration was too much for me. Wes Anderson fans will love it, though. The sets and design were gorgeous.

Speaking of the Oscar-nominated shorts, husband and I shell out $12 per person every year to see the five animated and five live-action nominees at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and it's always worth it. Someone above mentioned the beautiful "The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse," which won the animated category last year from among a very strong pool of contenders. This year, the animated "Pachyderm" and "Ninety-five Senses" and live-action "Red, White, and Blue" and "Knight of Fortune" really hooked me.

I saw the 5 Oscar nominated live action films. The Wes Anderson one was my least favorite.

The other 4 were OK.

'The After' and 'Red White and Blue' were my favorites this year.

Last year's crop was much better.

Napoleon - it is streaming free on Apple TV here.

It's a massive three hours but I honestly didn't notice the time, so that's good, right? I knew little about that period of history so it was interesting and like GoT, I looked at my phone during the battle scenes.

The only problem I had with it was Joaquin Phoenix's American accent, which was quite jarring at the beginning because I think it was the only one? A French accent would have been daft but since Josephine and most other French parts had a British accent, it was odd. But he also pulled expressions that were exactly like Trump's at some points, which was very appropriate. On balance he was well cast. Vanessa Kirby (Princess Margaret in The Crown) was great as Josephine.

There's apparently a director's cut coming :crosses fingers: that is at least a full hour longer or more...could be cut as a miniseries. Ridley Scott's long director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven took it from just-ok to excellent-one-of-my-faves, so I'm hoping this is true.

Speaking of accents.

The Indians in 'Killers of the FLower Moon' had American accents, which I thought was interesting. Maybe it's historically accurate. Don't know.

I thought the movie was great. 3.5 hours long, and didn't drag at all. It was shown on wide-screen in a local theater. Beautiful cinematography. Very good acting.  Interesting plot. Interesting characters.

If we're going with accents . . .

I always liked how Connery's Scottish accent wasn't jarring at all and completely blended in fine with all the Russian ones in The Hunt For Red October.  Somehow both accents live in the same place in the back of my mind - bearded men who like to drink and talk funny.

Saw Dune part 2 over the weekend - not as good as part one, but it's naturally a weaker part of the story, so no surprise there. Overall we liked it, hope he gets the funding to make the third one.

"Driving Madeleine" - a French film with English subtitles about a 92 year old and her irascible taxi driver.   Beautiful film, starts out slow but both actors are wonderful. The flashbacks in the 92 year old's life flesh out the story.

What we thought was going to be a lightweight movie about a woman getting driven around Paris turns out to be so much more.  Highly recommended.

We watched it as well.  Not a big fan of the changes made to the original story.  For one, it was overly simplified and left out quite a bit of the plot that could have easily been included if there wasn't so much focus on landscape and fight scenes.  Two, the manufactured drama regarding Chani seemed a bit bizarre.  For people that don't actually know the book, they're none the wiser, but since this is the third Dune movie out there, I was hoping for an improvement.  My personal favorite was the SciFi version from 2000, for as bad as the special effects were, the story was great.

I haven't seen any screen adaptation that captured Dune all that well.

I just saw Problemista yesterday and it was fantastic. About a young immigrant (Julio Torres, also his directorial debut) who gets laid off from his job and has to convince a crazy lady (Tilda Swinton) to hire him as an assistant so she'll sponsor his visa. With a lot of heightened elements and absurd humor that were right up my alley.

Re watched two 80's movies:
Vision Quest, fun wrestling movie set in Spokane starring Matthew Modine and Linda Fiorentino. Typical sports movie plot of the underdog taking on the hero's challenge, but Modine puts on a charming act as the young overachiever and Fiorentino is typically smoldering.

Rumble Fish, an "art film for teenagers" according to its director, Francis Ford Coppola. I really liked this movie when it came ou,t,  I was that weird teen interested in art films I guess.
Starring Matt Dillion, Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane, Dennis Hopper, Nicholas Cage, and with Tom Waits doing Tom Waits things.
The black and white cinematography is brilliant and reminiscent of German Expressionist cinema of the 20's with it's use of shadow and light;  the rhythmic soundtrack by Police drummer Stewart Copeland is outstanding and unique.
Upon this re-watch I felt the story was a little weak and the characters not fully fleshed out. The film is of course based on an SE Hinton novel of the same name. She also wrote Tex, The Outsiders, and other teen books. I was a fan of all her books at the time, but only learned recently that she was still a teenager herself when she wrote them! This might be the reason for the shallowness of the characters, but overall a fine film, and considered a cult classic today.
Really worth it just to see Matt Dillion and Diane Lane in all their 80's glory.

Civil War.  I was disappointed. It was OK, but I didn't find it believable. Lots of action, though. Acting was OK, but nothing terrific. Maybe I ask too much of the movie.

Roadhouse (1989). Ebert nailed it in his review https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/road-house-1989 and we were pretty impressed how many gratuitous titty shots they managed to fit in. Hilarious.

We just watched Robin Hood - the animated Disney version from 1973. Our kids enjoyed it and my wife, and I have fond memories of watching it multiple times as kids on VHS. Way better than most of the Disney movies from the last few decades.

Same here. From a technical standpoint it is outstanding. Beautifully composed shots, immaculate lightning, etc. But the story never gels and the ending was a let down.

Civil War, but I loved it. As a film intending to bring the feelings and experiences of war to an American audience, I think it works perfectly. Horrific movie that does exactly what it sets out to do in a way I found extremely compelling.

"Reptile" on Netflix. Super atmospheric and creepy with the brilliant Benicio Del Toro. It reminded me of Villeneuve's "Prisoners" from about 10 years back with Hugh Jackman and Jake Jake Gyllenhaal. That said, "Reptile" does fizzle out a bit at the end.

Local theater showed a one-time-only presentation of 'All About My Mother' by Avogadro (spelling). Nice cinematography. From 1999. Plot was about the interactions among eccentric Spanish folks. Involved transvestites also, which added something unusual to it.  Good acting. Best thing about it, imo, was the cinematography.

I haven't seen it but one of my Soldiers did. He thought it was a terrible movie but did appreciate that the movie accurately reflected how loud gunfire and helicopters are. Movies and TV shows always show people able to talk during a gunfight and the reality is it is incredibly loud, and you have to scream to be heard even a few feet away from a machine gun or if a helicopter is very close.

"The Americanization of Emily" on TMC.  A 1964 film with James Garner and Julie Andrews set in WWII.
Garner is a serviceman who is engaging but sardonic about the glamorization of war heroes.   Andrews is an English widow who falls in love with him.
What I didn't know is how much of an anti-war film it is - almost a Catch-22 mindset throughout.

I think it's a strong contender for having the best sword fighting scene ever put to film in a movie.  Maybe not technically great, but just perfect for the story.

It's technically pretty good too, my fencing instructor showed it as an example of actual good fencing in film (minus some of the acrobatics, of course).

They trained for months for that scene and Mandy Patinkin already had a fencing background.

That's interesting!  I know nothing about fencing, just assumed that they were doing acting stuff rather than legit moves.

I'm a sucker for swashbuckling movies. So if you like The Princess Bride, you might also enjoy The Court Jester, with Danny Kaye.

Also memorable fight scenes, and a cross between goofy and unbelievably good.

That’s one I keep going back to for snippets. Such great atmosphere and settings, and entertaining assumptions about life as a vampire. A great vampire film!

You have seen “Let the Right One
