My last post was August 2021.  Today is June 23, 2023.

We have reached a turning milestone, DD graduating from HS and enrolling in college.  A very expensive college we can't really afford.  She would not listen to reason and did not want to consider other options.  Our fault that she's a princess.  So it'd be interesting to record where ho we deal with this financial setback in the next 4 years.

                      retirement    total non-equity
July 2016:      $150,350      $204,450 (start of tracking)
Dec 2016:      $167,700      $219,800
Dec 2017:       $207,000      $315,150
Dec 2018:       $235,600      $324,150
Dec 2019:       $301,200      $386,700  doubled retirement savings in 3.5 years
Dec 2020:       $360,000      $467,400
Dec 2021:       $444,400      $530,900   this shows the impact of a new car loan that DH took
Dec 2022:       $411,500      $508,000  markets down
May 2023:       $458,100      $564,600  recovery from bad last year, status just before 1st bursar's payment

Wish us luck.

You posted here so I'll give unsolicited advice:

Be the parent. Kids make mistakes, but you are not required to subsidize those mistakes if you have given them clear warning, guidance, and wisdom. I have two princesses myself. But they're much younger than yours. If our finances pan out according to our current salaries, we'll be FI before the oldest graduates high school, and we'll have enough to cover in state tuition at the local university. We can also cover room/board. If they want to go somewhere more expensive, we'll likely tell them they're on their own for the difference. We also won't give them spending money. Even now, my 6 year old works for her income. We don't believe in allowances.

The student loans that my wife and I had were a drain on the first year of marriage. I can't imagine the folks with lower incomes and more loans. That's what you'd be setting her up for.

Don't sacrifice your own financial freedom for your kid's dumb decision.

Congrats on breaking 700k!
Thanks! 12 years ago when I was working Americorps, living on $8,000 a year and didn't know what money was, that was my FI number! I think I need around $1M invested and a paid off house so it'll be a couple more years, but it does still make the threshold feel really meaningful!

My wife retired this month - I earn much more and her job has turned into a real drag - so it's one of the first times that our assets/progress have allowed us to 'buy' a meaningful lifestyle benefit.

Looks like its time for me to move on up!! Hope to see you all in the next thread soon! I've enjoyed the camaraderie here.
Its very surreal, we hit a million after barely having a fifth of that 5 years ago. I finally feel like we made it to the easy part of the journey. All those little decisions I used to agonize over regarding spending money don't really matter any more. This vessel carries enough weight on its own to continue down the path.

Month six of unpaid sabbatical on the books. I'm amazed and slightly scared that my NW is $3K higher than when I started in January. That difference includes the net effect of a -$24K investment blunder, +$16K upward revision to my 2022 tax return estimate, and -$56K spend.

I'll start to look for work later this month and I'm nervous I'll be impacted by softening in the labor market.

All those little decisions I used to agonize over regarding spending money don't really matter any more. This vessel carries enough weight on its own to continue down the path.
Good job, it's a good feeling isn't it? And I feel it 10% less intensely than you, looking forward to a more distilled experience :)

I just finished a big move cross country and have moved into a new place.  This, of course, comes with a lot of expenses too.  A lawn mower, washer/dryer set, new chairs, etc...  Not to mention I was accidently separated from the military in conjunction with my move, so I was not paid for 3 months and I have a lot of money issues because I didn't get contributions to my TSP and they even stole money out of it, so that's fun...  But, I'm still making progress and hit the 900k mark for the first time!!!

Thanks @grantmeaname @oneday @Imustacheyouaquestion!! And congrats to your wife Grant!
@Turtle I saw you're already over there too. You're doing quite well! I understand wanting to count what you've earned... Someone made the comment that the market is still down 9% from the highs of a year or so ago. Blows my mind because it seems like everyone has hit new highs. In the next thread where some people are drawing down, it becomes more apparent.

I can also see the difference in comparing my own numbers for my 401k which has had deposits dripping in every payday vs the rollercoaster of the inherited account which has had nothing added.  It is finally up from when it was put into my name, but only because I did a dollar cost averaging of periodic rolling money from the high fee "Retirement Date 2020" fund into the available index funds in the plan.  The high allotment of bonds meant it lost less money last year, and I moved 10% or so at a time out of that fund in several different chunks over the course of the summer and early fall 2022.

Investments Only:
2020/07 - $400k
2021/01 - $500k
2021/04 - $550k
2021/07 - $600k
2023/06 - $700k
2023/07 - $750k

Quite an arduous effort to pump contributions to seemingly match the down market to hold the plateau, followed by the recent upswing in such short time. It'll obviously fluctuate, but hitting that 'three quarters' mark feels pretty exciting.

Such a great feeling, isn't it!?  I try my best to stick to my 'investments only' tracking but then I throw our cash and home equity in there and things get a bit spicier.

Net Worth
6/30/2023:       $1,023,377 (+63,406) +6.6%

Net Liquid Assets
$897,404 +7.1% in Q2

I thought I was just dipping my toes across the line (in net worth - not there yet for investments we can live off), but selling my car and going down to one helped a good bit.

7/20/2023: $1,042,188 now.

But... we also plan to sell the other car and buy a newer one. Sukkas! Oh well. We won't spend enough to push us below the line...

Awesome. Congrats!

I have a tracking sheet at home which I update most Monday mornings as a part of getting ready for the work week.

Yesterday was an all time high, so I gave in to the temptation to update numbers again this morning.  Not quite over the line, but so close

i havent updated things due to complexity from a home sale and new home purchase - the dust should settle enough by august 1 to know where things are at - right now it looks like we are in the $650K +/- range - > all time highs

I primarily track on the spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jLRMTDbemf-JwZA10noQ8RrEf3EzpWC0R58nNypstrM/edit#gid=0), but figured I was due for an update on the thread as well.

After taking a sabbatical last year, I'm now well above my pre-sabbatical high water mark (and contributing to the stash again). If things go well, I think I'm about a year out from graduating.

I have a tracking sheet at home which I update most Monday mornings as a part of getting ready for the work week.

Yesterday was an all time high, so I gave in to the temptation to update numbers again this morning.  Not quite over the line, but so close

As of Friday's market close, I was a whopping 9.22 over the line.  [Insert Happy Snoopy Dance]

We'll see if that holds today or slips back for July's month end.  Still feels good regardless.
