Furiosa.
I'm on vacation so I thought it would be fun to go to the theater, which I rarely do at home (I saw Once Upon A Time In Hollywood when it came out, that was just a few years ago, right?)
Big fan of the other movies in the series, especially The Road Warrior.
No spoilers, but I thought it was very good, better than Fury Road.
My problem with Fury Road was Tom Hardy, whom I normally love, but I didn't find his character of Max to be in the right arc from the previous films, and his acting was just jarring.
The best part of Fury Road was Furiosa, so I'm glad they went with her story in this one.
I would love to write more about it, but NO SPOILERS.

So here is the million dollar question.

My husband and I really disliked Fury Road. Creative (if dumb) action, great actors stranded in a film with zero story or character development.  We almost turned it off, and were bored nearly the entire watch.

I'm hearing rumors that Furiosa has an actual story and character development.

Is there actual STORY in this movie? Or is it more just a collection of stupid pet trick action stuff? (I'm ok with the latter if it's in service to an actual plot).
Yes, there is a good story in Furiosa that develops a back story and introduces new characters.
I'd say about 2/3 of the film is dedicated to this , and the last third brings the viewer back to already known characters.
I had similar thoughts about Fury Road on my first viewing, although I never hated it, it was a little over the top. I liked it more on the second viewing as I picked up on more of the details.
I think the writing is much stronger in Furiosa.

Back to vampire movies. I have a chance to see cult movie 'Jennifer's Body' on horror night at the local theater. It's about high school kids, one of whom becomes possessed and starts eating classmates. Maybe not a vampire, but similar.

Anyone see it?

Has anyone seen 'A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night'? Another vampire movie. Better than 'Only Lovers Left Alive',  imo, which was also good.

Yes, that's good as well. Not as good, IMO, but as I said, I relate way too much to OLLA.

Yes, it’s been a few years since watching it, but I do remember liking the story, though I think it was even slower than OLLA.

A round up of what I've watched the past few months:

•   Everybody Wants Some!:  Absolutely charming and delightful Richard Linklater; his first partnering with Glen Powell who jumps off the screen here. Similar vibe to Dazed and Confused but set in college. Clearly somewhat autobiographical for Linklater.

•   Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mutant Mayhem:  I have no interest in this cartoon but heard the film was clever and fun so watched it; and it WAS clever, esp with interesting animation style.

•   I Capture the Castle: Older British adaptation of the charming coming of age novel. Solid as one would expect, great cast, many of them very young (baby Henry Cavill)

•   Anatomy of a Fall: The French Best Pic nominee from last year. Very solid psychological study/courtroom drama. Side note: the French court system seems absolutely WILD.

•   Women Talking: Stagy and depressing but well performed drama about of group of Mennonite women in an isolated community who have to make a decision about what to do when some of them are being habitually abused.

•   Asteroid City: I'm usually quite indifferent to Wes Anderson, but I did enjoy this quite a bit. Not quite as dark an undertone as some of his films.

•   The Disaster Artist: Based on the true story of the making of the cult movie, The Room. Not particularly memorable, but well performed and diverting.

•   Burning: This was a big film out of South Korea maybe 5 years ago, and it is a really solid psychological thriller about a feckless young man who falls for a manic pixie dream girl, but then meets her charming maybe-boyfriend...Outstanding performance by Steven Yeun in a supporting role.

•   Warrior: Rewatch of this absolute banger of a sports classic. I have zero interest in sports movies or movies about Daddy issues or  mixed martial arts, and yet this movie is completely 100% riveting. Incredible performances by entire cast. Joel Edgerton in this movie...

•   Minari:  The best picture nom from a few years ago, starring Steven Yeun again in a wildly different, Oscar nominated performance as a man dragging his family to the Arkansas country side to try to make it as a farmer in the 1980s. Supporting actress Youn Yuh-jung won for  her role as the live wire grandmother.  Really enjoyed this but be warned it is very quiet, and not really interested in much plot.

•   Society of the Snow: Spanish adventure/drama about the men's soccer team that got stranded in the Andes after a plane crash in the 1970s and resorted to cannibalism. Very solid and engaging.

•   Scoop: BBC bio drama about the news scoop interview with Prince Andrew that partly busted his connection with Jeffrey Epstein. Topical (esp for me since I have a loose association with some other people connected to the Epstein grossness that just surfaced in the news), but it was just ok as a viewing experience. Best part is super fun performances by Gillian Anderson as the star interviewer and Rufus Sewell as Andrew.

•   Blonde: I enjoyed the original novel by Joyce Carol Oates (sort of real person fanfic about Marilyn Monroe), and Ana de Armas and the rest of the cast gave their all, but this adaptation felt simultaneously pretentious and exploitative (the latter might have been intentional meta-text...hard to parse).

•   Marcel the Shell with Shoes On: Delightful and very touching whimsy about a dude who rents a house and discovers a couple of mobile sentient shells live there already. Hijinks ensue.

•   American Fiction: I LOVE JEFF WRIGHT!  Thoroughly enjoyed this dramedy about a somewhat emotionally closed-off author of well-regarded literary fiction who resents the financial success of other black writers that seem (in his opinion) to exploit the black story for best-selling misery porn. Plenty funny, but more of a drama than the very entertaining trailer makes it appear. Nice family dynamics, thought provoking, etc.

•   The Handmaiden: More South Korean psychological thriller action...early Park Chan Wook, loosely adapted from a novel that I've always meant to get around to reading but haven't yet. Spectacular looking, kinky, and fun, though perhaps a little too male-gazey at times (very explicit and long sex scenes... be careful who you watch it with).

•   Anyone But You:  The less good recent Glen Powell movie, but we don't get many rom-coms of the traditional sort anymore, so even decent is welcome by me and this was perfectly watchable. Not sure comedy is Sydney Sweeney's strength, but everything and everyone looks amazing (including the location shooting).

•   The Holdovers: A wonderful warm bath of an old fashioned character study, kind of throwback vibes...like one of those Hal Ashby or Altman style character studies. A cantankerous Classics prof at a private prep school is tasked with babysitting some students over Christmas holiday.

•   A Most Wanted Man: John Le Carre spy thriller adaptation. The movie was fine, but it's mainly memorable for the last performance by the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman.

•   Rosemary’s Baby: Always meant to watch it, finally did. VERY stylish, and the costumes and set design were super fun.

•   The Fall Guy:  Silly fun, very much a throwback to 80s action comedies. Script could have stood another polish but with the great comedic skill of Ryan Gosling and a stellar cast (esp Hannah Waddingham, OMG) it is definitely a good lighthearted time.

•   The Idea of You:  This is being sold as a rom-com, but it's actually a pretty straightforward romantic drama... fanfiction type premise where a single mom accidentally meets a younger Harry Styles type boy -band star and begins an affair with him. This sounds so dumb, but again, the performances by Anne Hathaway and the young British actor who plays her love interest are rock solid and really sell this premise.

•   Evil Under the Sun: OMG SO FUN... this is one of the raft of Agatha Christie adaptations from the late 70s to early 80s where they'd round up casts of superstars and stick them in some fantastic location. (MAN  I WISH MORE MODERN MOVIES DID LOCATION SHOOTING).  This one features fantastic turns by young, hot Maggie Smith and even hotter Diane Rigg as frenemies at an exclusive Mediterranean hotel.

•   Godzilla Minus One: I'd heard this was rock solid for an extremely low budget Japanese monster movie, and I heard correctly. Fantastic effects for the budget. Engaging story, solid enough performances. GODZILLA STOMP.

•   On the Waterfront: Young Marlon Brando has always been a huge blind spot... so I took the plunge and watched this raved about classic. This was excellent, and (go figure) Brando really is outstanding in this. Movie star, indeed. I get it now. I was unprepared for his whole vibe... so naturalistic, so graceful and physical, so angsty. Also, phenomenal supporting turn by Karl Malden as a firebrand Catholic priest.

•   The Hit Man: And closing out the list with another Richard Linklater film, his new one starring Glen Powell as a nerdy college prof who moonlights undercover for the police, playing a hit man for hire.  Extremely entertaining neo-noir with a lot of humor and sexy as hell too (a rarity these days). I would say the closest overall comparison I can make for the vibe of this film would be Grosse Pointe Blank.

Thanks; I was originally thinking someone would have to actually buy me tickets AND pay me at least 30$ to make me watch this, but your comment make me think I might watch on streaming if it shows up.

Thanks for the list and thumbnails; there are several here that have been on my mental list, and you've helped me decide which ones to look for next.

Have you seen The Last Seduction by John Dahl? It's from 1995, and very stylish and noir-y. Stars Linda Fiorentino and Peter Berg. No idea why she didn't have more of a career, she's amazing in this film.

Yes, that's a  great one. Haven't seen it in many years, though. Maybe should seek it out again for "Noirvember".

Another vote for THE HIT MAN which was tremendous fun. Last night I made Ofpym watch UP IN THE AIR for baby Ruffalo and Paltrow. That was fun but Mike Myers was in a completely different movie to the rest of the cast.

Wenchsenior, I liked your reviews. I have seen several of the same films and agree with your summary of them.

I thought Anne Hathaway was gorgeous and so watchable in The Idea of You. I think this was a straight to streaming film?

I need to watch Anatomy of a Murder. . And I’ve had Burning in my queue for a long time and I’ve dipped into it a couple times, but can’t get beyond for a few minutes. But I really need to watch it.

Sounds like I need to watch Everybody Wants Some.

I watched Marcel the Shell in three segments, it didn’t get old and you would think something like that would wear on you. But little Marcel is very charming.

I remember thinking when that movie came out I capture the castle what took them so long to make that film because the book was produced what in the 50s? the book was somewhat OK and the film was less .

I very much remember The Handmaiden! Now that one was interesting.

The Holdovers was nice but forgettable.

I just finished “Tell Them You Love Me” which was just released on Netflix. It’s a fascinating documentary and I think it’s Oscar worthy.

I won’t  talk much about it because I want to see what you all have to say so I’ll just say what it’s about: a tenured college professor sexually attacks a quasi-student and goes to jail.

Man, I have a LOT to say about the perpetrator.

Just saw Kinds of Kindness at the theater. Disappointed. Interesting movie, but left me feeling abused? disgusted? offended?  nauseated? something like that.

The plot was just too weird, and the characters too mentally ill.

Yes, weird indeed!  We just saw it last night.  Knowing that's that it's mostly hyperbole and metaphors for controlling and abusive relationships is what kept me from feeling revolted.  We were at a small nonprofit theater, so out of the dozen people in our section, two individuals walked out halfway through, I think in anticipation of particularly disturbing scene.

Beverly Hills Cop

My wife and I had never seen it but there were some scenes that I was familiar with because they've been copied or parodied (banana in the tailpipe for instance).

Overall, it was a very 80s movie - but a classic. We both enjoyed it and will watch the sequels.

Network

It was enjoyable, unhinged, a parody on many levels, with some great acting - and I always appreciate a movie that takes place in a time where the effects of the economy (and/or political situation) make an impact in the movie.  It came out in 1976 and it really was a big deal to deal with inflation, various far-leaning political groups, unemployment, and gasoline prices.  It made sense that a bunch of reality TV fans would stick their head out a window and yell, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!" given the apathetic/disillusioning/corporatizing landscape.  However, I have no idea how the actress playing Max's wife won an Oscar.  It's not that she was bad, she was good but she was only in 2-3 scenes!  I thought Faye Dunaway was a bit much too soon but by the end she was a decent neurotic person completely consumed (yet seemingly aware of it and her path).  Her performance, the meeting room discussing the assassination, and the overall movie subtexts gave me a lot to ponder here in 2024.  Not bad for a movie approaching its golden anniversary to still be relevant and thought-provoking.  I could see this movie having a slight bit of rewatch value for me (partly just to see if it seems like the movie is as relevant to modern society).  I give it a B+.

Lastly, I looked up the ages of the male leads and most were in their 50s and looked to be in their late 60s or 70s.  Not sure if this was just how they looked or if they were played up to look older via some movie magic.  I could see that type of show biz (both the one onscreen - the network TV world - and the one of hard boozing actors who never quite stopped beating their body up with liquor after WW2) aging the body and it shows.  I don't think any of the lead actors lived to be that old (aside from Duvall but I wasn't counting him as he was only mid 40s at the time).  William Holden died at 63, Peter Finch at 60.  Rode hard and put away wet.

We watched "I, Tonya" last night. It's from 2017. Even DH, who has zero interest in figure skating, found it surprisingly compelling. If you're an Allison Janney fan: she is amazing, in a horrible way.

The 90 minute documentary God and Country about the rise of Christian nationalism.

How the myths persist that the U.S. was founded as a Christian nation, that there is no legal basis for separation of church and state, etc.  Informative but scary since it's the core of the Republican party.

Great film. Great performances. That was one ice princess who lead a tough life with littl3 real support outside of skating. It is amazing Tonya

"Beekeeper".  I got this movie on DVD for my girl friend. I thought I would not like it, just a smash bang action movie. But I like it. I'm half way through it.

I didn't know the plot was so good. A retired government macho (CIA?) guy decides to go after some criminals who rip off old folks by infecting their computers and duping them into transferring money to them.

It is very satisfying to see the slimy ripoff artists get their due, very violently. All very unbelievable, of course, one good guy taking out 5 bad guys simultaneously, but that's OK, lol.

THE UNFORGIVEABLE - definitely in the category of beautiful person (Sandra Bullock) makes themself gritty and unattractive as Oscar-bait. Pretty grimcore and depressing all the way down, which made sense once I realised it was a remake of a Sally Wainwright miniseries.

When did all movie trailers become a 2-minute version of the entire movie? I feel like I have no need to see most new movies as the trailer is just a super condensed version of the whole thing.

Remember Terminator 2 and how *mind-blowing* the special effects were and how *buff* Linda Hamilton was? Maybe, just hold on to that memory and don’t rewatch it.

Considering the technology is over 30 years old, I'm still blown away by the special effects.  Plus, Jurassic Park from around the same time.

Yup, just rewatched a couple years ago after >25 year not seeing it. Linda Hamiton's body was amazing, and the special effects held up well. Pacing was much slower than we are used to these days from an action movie, I thought (not a bad thing, but different).

I kinda like that it's a slightly slower movie. You don't feel like it's throwing things at you rapid fire, and you get to know the characters more. You have time to digest what's going on.

I saw American Society of Magical Negroes on the plane. I enjoyed it, though reviews haven’t been too kind. It’s a satire of blacks in white society, so controversial subject matter. A bit similar to how Don’t Look Up, another movie I like, was controversial and got bad reviews.

"Buy Now!  The Shopping Conspiracy" on Netflix.  Not what I expected.  It seemed more in the camp of convincing the viewer to sell their soul to use their easy formula to maximize profits and destroy the planet.  It did get me thinking about how out of control the combination of Amazon, globalization, and algorithms has already become and that there is nothing we can do to put the genie back in the bottle.  We keep speeding up the flywheel of creating debt to buy cheap junk that ends up in landfills knowing deep down that it's ruining our lives, the environment, and ultimately the future.  There are a few crutches (recycling will save us, corporations really are trying to do better, etc.) that make this stark reality palatable enough for us to keep participating.  Unfortunately, kids have been sideswiped at an early edge by screens that they trust, only to be filled with garbage advertising and social media.  Critical thinking, the one thing that could have firewalled humanity on the way to us destroying ourselves, got bypassed by the addictiveness of one click 'shopping' and corporations taking over governments.

I saw Wicked last week with an old friend.

It was excellent! It kept a lot of the elements of the book that I loved, and also reflects the patriarchal and misogynistic roots of the original story.

The casting was also fantastic - Michelle Yeoh was a delight, and Ariana Grande's vocal range is astonishing.

It's been a bit, but this has been a year of bangers so far. Here's a list of the ones I loved:

Hit Man: Others have talked about this one, but it's a fantastic film! Deserves a lot more recognition.

Abigail: Was not expecting to like this one, but I LOVED it. Sort of 3 movies in 1 and all of them are fantastic.

Turning Red: New for me, not for others. A delightful film!

The Fall Guy: another delightful action flick. Feels like going to the movies in the 90s.

Blink Twice: Stressful, and intriguing. I really enjoyed this one a lot!

My Old Ass: In contention for movie of the year. A coming of age story where the protagonist gets to talk to her older self after a bad mushroom trip. Really good film.

We Live In Time: Another contender for movie of the year. This film was spectacular and does a better job of showing what it is like to fall in love and live with someone you love better than any movie I think I've ever seen. Formulaic, but told in such a unique way to make it totall new and perfect.

Anora: Very rated R, so not recommended for most. I felt really awful leaving the theater, but also loved and adored this movie. A brilliant film from beginning to end that is never boring.

Wicked (Part 1): Saw it over the weekend, had an absolute blast!

The Fall Guy is EXCELLENT, and yeah, it really hits the spot for anyone who loved 90s movies.

But more than that, it's essentially a love letter to cinema written by a professional stuntman. It's a classic 90s action/love story told from the perspective of a stuntman, and it really did expand my understanding of the impact stuntfolk have on film, which I've never really appreciated.

It shows how the stuntfolk don't just have to be skilled at stunts, but how they have to act as well. How their presence and movement is crucial to the emotional tension of many of the most emotionally impactful scenes in movies. It's neat to see it from that perspective.

It's also funny as hell. It starts Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, both of whom can pull off an unusual combo of charisma and strangeness, which works synergistically and made me say to DH "why haven't these two been paired together before???"

It's really well paced, the action is fun, the dialogue is clever and self-aware, the characters are likeable and have great chemistry, it's just a really, really fun movie.

I've almost stopped watching new movies because I can't take how sloooow all the well rated ones are, and when I'm in a "movie mood" I'm not looking for slow, so this one was a really nice surprise.

I agree on the chemistry. It's one of those movies when I felt bad for the actors' real life partners :D I'd be like - yeah babe don't watch this one, eh.

Made my daddy watch Frozen and Frozen 2. He enjoyed them both. We also watched Muppet's Christmas Carol, and Muppet Treasure Island, both of which are the peak of cinema. He liked the Christmas Carol movie, but fell asleep during Treasure Island, thus missing out on the 'Cabin Fever' song.

I'm thinking we're going to watch 'Moana' next.

Just watched Fall Guy and I fall into the category of people (https://www.reddit.com/r/Letterboxd/comments/1cj6t8r/what_do_we_think_about_the_fall_guy/) that didn't like it. Third Act was fun and engaging and redeemed it somewhat but I felt like the first two acts were a lot of obvious dry meta dialog. Relationship within a movie within a movie but clearly so, no surprises. It's weird - I love Gosling in action and silly movies. I love Emily Blunt. But I felt so disengaged until roughly the boat scene. Almost turned it off which I rarely do.
