No alcohol during the week; limit 1 glass of wine or a drink weekend nights.

That's an important fix!  Alcohol packs a lot of calories and it's metabolized like fructose meaning it either gets burned up right away or it becomes fat.  I used have a small glass of wine (maybe 1/3 a restaurant glass) at night as part of my workday decompression.   Now I have a glass of sparkling water maybe with a no-calorie flavor squirt instead.

BTW how old is everyone etc?  I'm 57 and post-menopausal, which is how the weight gain happened.   I think that makes a difference in dietary approaches...it's REALLY hard to shed pounds in menopause and until I tried keto I thought nothing would work.

I'm 41. Currently trying to get back to 110-112 lbs because I'm just barely 5 feet tall and that's a healthy, comfortable weight for my frame.

After a major emotional shock+stress eating last spring and all the winter holiday food, I was at 125 lbs at the New Year and am at 121 lbs now. Most of that 4-lb loss was from cutting waaaaay back on alcohol (from two drinks per night to maybe three per week) and almost entirely cutting out simple carbs.

I'm 50, in peri-menopause. 5'3" tall.

I hit a high of 165 when pregnant (youngest is 18) and never really lost it until about 7 years ago. As of 3 years ago I was comfortably at 125-130, where I stayed until about a year ago. I was pretty happy to be there and am not happy with where I am now. It's a vicious cycle as I like food and eating well and also like exercising; when I am feeling "fluffy" my mojo to do anything goes out the window, which makes me more fluffy.

I feel ya.  I'm almost 50, 5'2.5".

My comfy spot a year or so ago was 131-136.  I was running a lot.

I had some injuries and stress and our scale broke.  I started weight lifting.  I gained about 15 pounds.

So anyway, early Jan cut back on late night snacking and chocolate.

With the weightlifting, I don't think my comfy spot is the same, it's prob a few pounds higher.  I figure I'll know when I get there (less "fluffy").

One of the ways that I judge it, is work pants.

Usually I have:
2 pairs that are a little loose
3 pairs that fit well
2 pairs that are a little snug

Early Jan, these were
2 pair that were a little snug
3 pair that were uncomfortably snug
2 pairs that weren't coming on no way no how.

So we are back to normal at least.  I'd still like to lose about an inch off the waist and hips.

Progress continues!

age 20:  110 lbs
age 30:  125 lbs (ideal)
age 40:  135 lbs
age 50:  started creeping up above 140 lbs
8/1/2019 - 161 lbs.  Started keto diet.
1/1/2019 - 138 lbs.  Started adding "safe starches" (potatoes and brown rice) in mid-Januaray
2/2/2019 - 137.4
2/9/2019 - 136.6
2/16/2019 - 136.0

And, the GI problems have been nicely solved.  In addition to the dietary starches I got some Bob's Red Mill unmodified potato starch (grocery) and some powdered psyllium husk (Amazon).  2 tablespoons of the potato starch and a spoonful of the psyllium husk mixed into yogurt or kefir has become my favorite "after school" snack.  I wish I could get these results entirely through diet, but I think that's just hard to do without leading the life of a prehistoric hunter gatherer and eating the fiber-rich ancient tubers that differ so much from what we have access to.

(BTW recommend not taking these in the AM unless you want to be, ahem, serenading your colleagues at work.)

January Start: 156
Feb 2: 154
Feb 9: 153.8

Feb 16: 153.8

A bit frustrated as I had another mostly perfect eating week. I did have a glass of wine last night so maybe it was that? My body fights for every pound as I get close to 150. I just need to remind myself it takes absolute dedication because my circulation and health are important.

6 lbs down in 1.5 months?  I'd say you're doing great!

There's a certain amount of natural fluctuation on the scale, so wouldn't sweat the occasional ups and downs.  You want to see trends over periods of maybe a month before you decide you're stalled.  FWIW I was stalled for almost 3 months (Nov - Jan) but now losing weight again.  Fine since I'm not in a hurry.  Also, I'm happier losing at a slow pace of ~0.5 lbs/week, because I keep thinking if I lose too fast I might have more of a chance of gaining it back later - because my body might be thinking it's in a starvation mode now and is quietly planning to make up for it later as soon as I give it half a chance.

I think I have to jump on the calorie counting bandwagon :(

I was trying to avoid it by doing things like fasting until dinner one day a week, and trying to get a minimum of 500 g of veggies a day, but the snacking is strong, and I'm maintaining or gaining right now.  I will seriously just eat and eat and eat delicious things (sweet or savory, doesn't matter) past the point of discomfort if I don't have to be accountable to myself by writing it all down.  I'm honestly not sure how to get past this.

For now, I guess tracking is going to have to be the solution.  I'm going to start out at 2000 cal/day and tweak from there.  I'm breastfeeding an 11 month old, so I have probably 400-500 calories of wiggle room, and now that I'm lifting weights or spinning 4 times a week, I hope my calorie limit for loss will be higher than I think.  My husband just ordered 10 boxes of Thin Mints, so...

Weight this morning, 2/17 - 153.6 lbs

My "comfortable" weight before having kids was ~135 lbs, but I suspect that's changed.  I'd be happy to get down to 145 at the moment, and see how that feels.  I think last year my goal was to get down into the 140s, and then I gained 5 lbs over the holidays because I stopped weighing myself and convinced myself I "wasn't doing that bad".  See where that gets me.

I'm going to a beach wedding at the end of April, and my main goal right now is to fit into the dress I've borrowed so I don't have to fail the "Don't buy any clothes in 2020" challenge :)  It ALMOST zips up right now, so hopefully with lifting weights and keeping the binge eating to a minimum, two months will be enough time.

Posting to follow and learn. I started at about 240 in November 2018. Got down to about 200 and am at about 205-210 right now.

I think my optimal weight is about 190. I’d like to get there before the end of the year and hopefully stay there.

This sounds worrying...are there reasons why you might be bingeing that maybe could be worked out with counseling?  I don't mean to intrude and feel free not to respond, but phrases like "past the point of discomfort" are red flags.

Fasting doesn’t always work as well for premenopausal women as for postmenopausal women or men. It can disrupt our hormone cycles and induce physiological stress. You may find it much easier to avoid bingeing and more comfortable to track calories and split the total daily amount into 3 or 4 meals spread out over 10 or 12 hours.

I'm not sure it's something that needs counseling.  Maybe?  I've never thought about that before.  I've always just thought of it as a really bad habit.

I tell myself I snack when I'm doing other things - watching TV, reading, making lunches for the kids, cleaning the kitchen.  It's MOSTLY proximity, an apparent desire to chew things (? I've been snacking on carrot sticks, and it's almost as satisfying, as long as I start with them), and being "distracted" by whatever else I'm doing.   When I'm retrospectively realizing that I more than occasionally snack to the point of discomfort, though, I guess there are a lot of other times, like when I've eaten 3/4 of a bag of M&Ms and thought "I'm getting really sick of these, but there are only 20 left, I may as well eat them all...", or "I've already eaten four cookies, what's two more?", which are not great.

You may be right about fasting.  So far once a week until dinner hasn't been bad, but that might be due to a huge caloric excess the rest of the week that's just sitting in reserve in my digestive system, ha.  I don't think it will be nearly as comfortable or easy if I'm eating a normal amount of calories on a day-to-day basis, especially with breastfeeding/pumping.

I've started planning and tracking meals, which is like the thousandth time I've done this in my life, but whatever, at least I know how.  Barring crazy things happening, I'm done having kids, so I don't have the excuse of "I'm just going to be pregnant next year anyway" to wave away the desire to be in better shape.  We'll see.  I don't want to have to track forever, I want to be able to eat a normal, necessary amount of delicious food without eating an entire pint of ice cream instead of just a bowl.

That is good to know about fasting before menopause! I hadn't come across that in any of the books I've read (but I'm also generally only fasting 14-16 hours at a time). I actually decided to take yesterday and today off from fasting because the scale isn't moving and I'm hungry. I'm pretty sure I'm hormonal which always includes a major hunger spike for me.

Years of calorie counting have taught me that if I eat above 1500 for an extended period of time I will gain weight. I was hoping that fasting would let me eat more calories if I limited the hours as I'm hoping for improved insulin response to mitigate the extra calories. I am probably still going to keep giving fasting a try for a bit, but now I will pay attention to hormonal indicators.

1/20/2020:  -3.8
1/27/2020:  -5.8

New low weight today for 2020, I was at or below this weight for about 3-4 days in mid 2019 but was never able to sustain it.

Been sticking with a great workout routine this time and even when I go off the rails I can keep it limited to a meal or a day.

11/25/19: 226lbs
1/20/20: 231lbs
2/19/20: 219.3lbs
Goal #1: 208lbs

Chaskavitch, glad to know it's just habitual snacking.

I used to feel the need to snack a lot too, before I went low carb - which means high fat.  Counterintuitive, but a diet devoid of sugars and simple starches, with fat contributing the majority of calories, puts your blood sugar and appetite on an even keel so you won't need to snack.  Sugars put your blood sugar on a roller coaster and spikes up your insulin.  Both of those make you hungry an hour or two after meals.

Perhaps you could try that?  Eliminate sugar and cut down on the grains & potatoes, and add fat to your meals (butter, eggs, bacon etc).  Snack on nuts and cheese instead of chips.  It might take a while for your body to adjust.  Most important also:  get the snacky crap out of the house so you're not tempted.

Down 4.4 pounds since Jan 6.

I'm sitting about two pounds above my "goal" trend line that gets me to my Q1 goal of -13 pounds by April 5.

Still holding at 121 lbs after a very stressful week and several restaurant meals, including one with a couple of generous alcoholic drinks. I'm okay with that. Getting back to the reduced-slow carb diet and more filling home-cooked meals should help.

I definitely feel better overall when I eat lower carb, and I snack less.  It's a good idea, and I do love eggs and avocado and butter :)  Thanks for suggesting it.

I can't get rid of all of the snacky stuff, because my husband is sad when we have no chips or crackers or whatever.  The man has never gained an excess pound in his life, but it's not his fault, I guess.  I can at least eliminate a lot of the sweet things, which would help a lot.  I'm a little worried I've passed on my sweet tooth to our 4 year old, so hopefully having fewer sweet snacks will help him as well.

My husband likes snacks, too. The only one I really can't leave alone is potato chips, so we don't keep those in the house. I can usually ignore the crackers in favor of a handful of raw almonds or piece of cheese.

I got out of the habit of calorie counting, though I've tried to keep portions small. I'll try to do better this week.

I’ve been following this thread and just wanted to congratulate you on getting to a negative slope. Steady, steady, keep it up.

I started a Keto Diet on Feb 2 a Sunday. So during my walk I stop at a Publix grocery store and weigh myself on their scale. At the start I was 166lbs, after 1 week 163lbs, after 2 weeks 159-3/4lbs. I'll update after my walk today. I'm hoping for another 3lbs, but I know I slipped a little and didn't keep my Ketones up.

Weekly check-in.  Going in the right direction, if barely :)  We went out for our anniversary last Friday and I had three drinks and dessert, but overall my average intake for the week was right at 1950 calories.

Start - 2/17 - 153.6
Averages
2/16 - 2/23 - 152.9

Eh...in the last 2 weeks there was chocolate.
And I have a pretty natural 3-5 lb swing over a month.  So...less chocolate and see if at least we can keep moving downward.

No change on last week's weigh-in:

8/1/2019 - 161 lbs.  Started keto diet.
1/1/2019 - 138 lbs.  Started adding "safe starches" (potatoes and brown rice) in mid-January
2/2/2019 - 137.4
2/9/2019 - 136.6
2/16/2019 - 136.0
2/23/2019 - 136.0

I think I can credit that to having two drinks and a meal out with the family at a restaurant where I know everything was loaded with sugar.   Doesn't seem like much.  It appears I'm not very carb tolerant.

Back to under 220 today which I am happy with following 4 days with at least one unhealthy meal. Hoping to hit 215 before my work trip on March 10th.

August 2018: 236.8
December 31, 2018: 198.8
December 31, 2019: 155
January 31, 2020: 157
February 29, 2020: 149.8

Holy crap! I haven’t lost this much weight in one month in over a year. The strange thing is that I haven’t made a lot of changes. I was injured for a big chunk of the month. Although I continue working out 5-6 days/week, I’m wondering if some of the weight loss is due to muscle loss. I can’t imagine that I actually lost over 7 lbs of fat in one month.

Once I lose just 0.8 lbs more, I’ll be in the healthy BMI category. My lowest adult weight is 145. I’m so close to that weight. I’m looking forward to getting back to that weight.

Wow, great work goinganon!  I also have good news to report (btw, just realized I had mistakenly used "2019" dates).

8/1/2019 - 161 lbs.  Started keto diet.
1/1/2020 - 138 lbs.  Started adding "safe starches" (potatoes and brown rice) in mid-January
2/2/2020 - 137.4
2/9/2020 - 136.6
2/16/2020 - 136.0
2/23/2020 - 136.0
2/28/2020 - 134.8  Started supplementing magnesium (consistently).

I generally don't like taking supplements, but I've been finding that magnesium is very helpful, for improved sleep and general well being.  I can't deal with swallowing horse pills on a regular basis, and I dislike the mg citrate powders because they function more as laxatives.  So I wasn't taking it regularly.

Then I found the "magnesium water" recipe:  take a 2 liter bottle of unflavored seltzer water, add 3 Tbsp unflavored Good Sense milk of magnesia (or a brand that doesn't contain sodium hypoclorite, i.e. bleach), shake and let sit for about an hour (shake once more mid-wait).  There's a chemical reaction between the Mg oxide and the carbonic acid in the seltzer, and you get Mg carbonate which is much better absorbed than any other form.  You drink half a cup of this twice a day.  Super cheap too!

Week 2 check-in.

2/17 - Started at 153.6
2/23 - 152.9
2/29 - 151.4

My weight this morning was up a lb, so that will throw off averages this week even if I keep losing.  We had friends over yesterday and between jalapeno poppers, loaded nachos, and cheesecake, I was probably 1k over my calorie goal, even though I wasn't outrageously full.  It was just a lot of very calorie-dense food.  We'll see!

It's been pretty rainy here, too, but I wish I could blame that.  I'm pretty sure I'd have been unmotivated even if the weather had been nice.  The weather was really nice yesterday, though, and I went for a long hike.  Maybe good weather would help out?

Down 5.4 pounds since Jan 6. If I can keep up what I've been doing for diet and exercise the rest of the year, I'll be amazing shape by December.

Also still making progress!

8/1/2019 - 161 lbs.  Started keto diet.

2/2/2020 - 137.4

2/23/2020 - 136.0
2/28/2020 - 134.8
3/8/2020 - 134.4

And this was despite a few indulgences during the week.  Two drinks, plus I tried the new "snackin' bacon" offering at Dunkin Donuts.  It's a bag of bacon strips with a sweet pepper topping. It was absolutely delicious, but after I went home and looked it up I found it contains 9g (almost 2 teaspoons) of added sugar!!!!  Yikes!!!

One month later, no weight lost. Holding at 122 with some PMS water gain (can feel the bloating). Still, February was an incredibly stressful month and I am fighting seasonal depression. I will count avoiding weight gain from emotional eating as a win.

I have a new excuse every week it seems. Nashville tornado knocked out the power in our house for a couple days, resulting in us throwing out everything in our fridge and eating out a bunch this week.

Bad for the budget and bad for my weight. It's a wonder that I didn't gain weight.

Yes, business trips are hell on weight loss plans for the same reason.  I am happy if I don't gain weight.

OtherJen, what are you emotionally eating?  I found when I cut out grains and sugars, I stopped having the constant compulsion to snack.   It took a few weeks though.  At first, the urge to snack got overwhelming...I remember waking up one morning and literally leaping out of bed because I absolutely needed food NOW.  I've never in my life had a sensation like that, it was like a withdrawal syndrome.  Now, I'm in complete control.  Yet another huge win for low carb eating.

No, I meant that this time I was able to avoid emotional eating and thus avoid a several-lb weight gain. Having my weight remain stable through a high-stress month (and even with a weigh-in right before my period) is a major victory. I’ve eaten some things I wouldn’t normally eat anymore (e.g., chips, starchy gluten-free pizza, drinks with friends), but have been able to balance those with lots of salads, fish, poultry, and nuts. I rarely snack at night anymore; if I’m actually hungry (not just peckish) a few hours after dinner, I have a small spoonful of peanut butter and am fine for 12 hours or so until breakfast.

In contrast, last year, I had a major emotional shock in spring and put on about 10 lbs in a few months, mostly from potatoes, pasta, rice, and alcohol (I don’t have much of a sweet tooth).
