My goal is to get back to I was pre-middle of last summer. Alot of events have taken place and I have slowly had weight creep on. I want to lose or be at 195-198 by My Physical around April 15th. I have currently been weighing in between 212-215. So that range 195-198 for a week or two and Holding so April 1st makes more sense.

Was down to 206.5 the last 2 days but now its only gonna get harder. Gotta stick with it!!

I failed to weigh-in yesterday, due to the holiday throwing off my schedule. I doubt there was much of a change though. My ankle sprain hasn't improved at all, so physical activity for two weeks has been zero.

I've tried to count calories in the past, and it is so inconvenient that it makes me not want to bother. Having to measure out how much of each food/ingredient is such a hassle, even with apps that are supposed to make it easier.

For instance, today I had a bowl of cereal. It's one cup per serving. How many cups did I have? I don't know- maybe 1.5 cups. That isn't so difficult, but then we get to coffee. I had a 20 oz. cup and creamer. How much creamer? I have no idea. I use a lot, but how much is that? I'll guess 3 tablespoons, but who knows how accurate that is? Then I had a carbonated water. That's just breakfast, and it took me 10 minutes to badly estimate.

The easiest and most accurate thing to do would be get a flat food scale, probably.  Put your bowl on there, tare it, add your cereal, tare again, add milk.  Coffee mug, tare, creamer, then coffee (or vice versa).  That way you don't need to worry about cleaning measuring spoons/cups.

I'm in for weight loss in 2020!  I reached my highest weight in December 2017 at 252 pounds.  I was 228 at the beginning of 2019, then I got pregnant.  I count calories using MyFitnessPal (I highly recommend it!) and I don't really restrict what I eat other than that.  (Ice cream, pizza, cheesesteak sandwiches?  Yes please.)  Fortunately, I'm on a very strict budget (hair on fire debt situation) so I won't be getting any of my calories from fast food for quite a while.

Last weigh in was 1.4.2020:  205 lb.
Goal:  Lose 30 or more pounds in 2020, with an average loss of 0.5-1.0 lb per week

Good luck, all!

I'm not going for weight so much as fat, i'd like to lose maybe 5# total, but replace more with muscle. I started P90x last week of December - down 3.5" off the beer gut/dad bod already, but weight ~ the same, which i see as a win!

1/6: 236.4
1/13: 237.1
1/21: 238.0
1/26: 233.2

I started tracking calories this week. It is a pain in the ass, but it sure has been helpful, at least with this small sample bias. I'm going for 2k/day limit, so I don't expect that level of loss to be sustained.

My solution is to measure once, and then keep the dishes the same.  I know my usual bowls hold 1 cup when they're reasonably full, I've seen how much creamer is two spoons in my usual cup, etc.

My biggest struggles are around travel (both work & personal). Particularly on the work side, I'm jet lagged, have less control over what I eat, drink with colleagues, and work out less. I'm also tired during & after the trip. I have my first international trip coming up (Tokyo on Saturday), so my goal is to stick to my plans around limiting alcohol, no sweets, & keeping up my workout plans. It's going to be a big adjustment for me.

I track my calories, and have started doing a weekly calorie average, for me to really see when & how things get off track. I work out plenty (when I'm not traveling), but can do more to make my time more efficient while working out.

We have free food (all day, every day - meals & snacks) at work. This occasionally gets hard for me, but once I give up the treats/snacks, I do well at sticking with it.

Well, first international work trip happened. The first 3 days, I crushed my goals. After that, I did way better than usual, but not as well as I'd wanted. I'm tracking alcohol weekly, and was shocked by how much more I drink when I travel for work. Like, double. So, that's an area for improvement. I avoided sweets for the entire trip, minus two very small bites. This is huge for me, as jet lag & lack of sleep pushes me to depend on sweets & caffeine.

I've also lost 3.8 lbs in January, and hit my low in Tokyo, so this was a big win. My goal for the rest of the month (heading out on another trip on Tuesday) is to maintain. If I can lose .2 lbs more, even better.

End of Week 3 update: Down 3.4 pounds, or more than 25% to my goal of 13 pounds this quarter.

Workout goals for this week are to complete 3 interval sessions at the gym, 5 times 30 minutes of cardio, and 2 lifting sessions; meals are prepped for the week, so again need to focus on eating them instead of other snacks/meals.

1/13/2020:  -3.0
1/20/2020:  -3.8
1/27/2020:  -5.8

I'm not really sure how I'm losing this fast.  I even splurged with both a donut and an apple turnover last night.  I wonder if I'm estimating high on calories.

I count calories using MyFitnessPal (I highly recommend it!)

My Fitness Pal is great!  I just downloaded it again at New Year.  I've managed three periods of significant weight loss in my adult life, and it was using MFP every time.  I find that it helps me stay accountable to myself.  Like there was cake in the coffee area at work today, but I stopped myself having some because I knew it would mean that I had get the phone out and log the calories.  The app is linked to my activity tracker too (I walk a lot) so the net daily calories are pretty easy to track.  My only problem is when I reach a happy weight, the MFP use stops and the weight starts to creep up again....

Anyway, I started the year at 93kg - the heaviest I've ever been - and I want to get down to 85kg by summer.  Down 3kg already!

I'm doing Myfitnesspal, too.  It does get old sometimes having to log everything I eat, but it works.

Incidentally, I did have a piece of break room cake, but if I track everything I can budget and make up for it somewhere else.  If you develop good habits and learn how to budget, you can have some controlled indulgences.  Honestly I think it makes it easier if you know that you don't have to totally deprive yourself.  The cake was REALLY good, too.  Worth it.

MyFitnessPal is great & I've been using it too!! I'm always more successful when I actually enter everything, even if it's over my goal, and truly put effort in.

I'm in, too! Current weight around 159.0. Goal weight 130. Long way to go, especially since I'm pretty sure birth control is working against me...whatever. No excuses. Good luck, friends!

Late joiner here, had started a weight loss bet with some coworkers around thanksgiving but all 4 of us were doing pretty shitty so we extended the end date from valentine's day to end of March. My wife also signed me up for the transformation challenge at Orange Theory so I've worked out quite a bit these past 2 weeks (average of 4 times per week).

Weight has dropped from about 227 in January to 222.8 on Jan 31st.

My ultimate goal is sub 200 lbs but I'll settle for 208 (95kg) by our upcoming trip on March 25th so that's about 15lbs in 7.5 weeks which seems doable.

1.14.19 -- 209.5
1.26.19 -- 206.5
6.23.19 -- 208.4
9.28.19 -- 197.2
10.11.19 -- 196.7
11.26.19 -- 202.3
1.3.20 -- 199.7
2.1.20 -- 198.9

I'm OK with this.  Today's weigh-in was a little high compared to earlier this week, so this isn't just a water weight shift but a tiny loss.  I haven't been tracking vigorously, just trying to moderate some indulgences with some very healthy meal-prepped work lunches.  I'm planning to step up my efforts over time but have been tracking other goals for January and didn't want to overwhelm myself and give up.

I bought a bunch of beer for a superbowl party, so I'm going to practice being very careful about not slipping into a "beer a day" habit and being deliberate about storing them and only bringing them out for a special weekend treat.

Going to check in next month, good luck everyone!

Bit off topic perhaps but one way I keep myself motivated is to remember my food intake for last year's superbowl. I went to some party and consumed tons. We don't have party plans tomorrow so just on that one day I might get ahead by 2000 calories compared to 2019.

Doesn't matter a whole lot in the grand scheme but it does motivate me.

I was doing so well sigh. Then came a week vacation. I did surf everyday sometimes 2x but also ate everything in sight. And oh my consumed all the rum punch. Yesterday I went from a work brunch to a steak dinner for family bday. Next week I’m going to Charleston for work and staying the weekend. After that I will asses the damage. Eating mostly veggies for next 2 days at least.

Up about a pound after superbowl snacks last night (no problem, I expected that!).

End of week 4 update: Down 1.8 pounds. Sticking to meal plan and workouts for this week. Another high weigh-in next Sunday and I'm probably looking at notching calories down.

January Start: 156
Feb 2: 154

A month in and I might be starting to feel comfortable with fasting. I'm still very hungry at 10am most days, but as long as work isn't horribly stressful I can generally make it until noon. I think the thing I like about fasting is that it seems easier to fall off plan for a day if you need to than it does when you are just calorie counting or whatever.

I am reading the Obesity Code and it is interesting and seems very sensible.

August 2018: 236.8
December 31, 2018: 198.8
December 31, 2019: 155
January 31, 2020: 157

Considering that my weight jumped up to nearly 160 at one point, I suppose that I shouldn’t be too upset, although I am pretty annoyed. I’m working out more and have had a larger calorie deficit so I don’t know how my weight seems to be going in the wrong direction. Here’s hoping that it works itself out for next month.

Alright, I actually started at 172, I am down to 166. So while I will take it I am sure some is water weight.  But I am actually eating Much less and exercising everyday. Nothing strenuous. Last thing I need is to hurt myself and stop what I am doing.

I am feeling better in my clothes, have less heartburn so I am not willing to give that up. It’s giving me motivation to continue.

I also try and not step on the scale all that that often. It can be a demotivated for me. I go by how I feel in my clothes. Although, curiosity is getting the better of me lately.

Keep it up everyone.

I'm in!  Fixing to reverse years of creeping weight gain!

125 lbs in my 30s
135 lbs once I hit 40
Up to 161 lbs (yikes) after menopause - despite many attempts at calorie-restricted diets

I started a ketogenic diet last August.  I'm now at 137 lbs and feel GREAT.  No fasting, no change in exercising, and NEVER hungry.  In fact, I have less problems with getting hungry than I ever did before keto.

The feeling great part is the best thing about keto...except one problem: the infamous keto constipation.  It's BAD.  I'm pretty much 100% dependent on laxatives (Mg citrate).  And I was clock-regular and perfectly normal in that department pre-keto.   I tried all the tricks recommended online, but I think I might just be one of those people who need a bit of starch in my life.   So I tried small amounts of potato or rice (cooled after cooking then reheated) plus a prebiotic supplement at double the usual dose, and FINALLY had a normal poop - wow.  But it's also stopped the weight loss.  So I'm thinking to try Bob's Red Mill potato starch instead of the potatoes and rice next (and would be nice to quit that pricey prebiotic supplement).

Wondering what the rest of you low-carbers are doing about this?

Honestly, you had a pretty rapid (average ~1 lb/week) and impressive period of weight loss. It’s normal for that rate to slow or plateau as you get closer to your target weight (I’m working on 10-11 lbs. and it’s slow-going). Constipation is not healthy for your colon so I would prioritize that over further rapid weight loss, especially if your weight is in a normal/healthy range for your height. I suspect that over time, you would still see gradual weight loss even with small servings of foods containing resistant starch (potato would probably be a better choice because it also contains a decent amount of fiber). Potato starch shouldn’t be a problem in terms of blood glucose if added to meals.

Thanks OtherJen, good perspective!

I had a small serving of brown rice along with my sausage and vegetables for lunch...it was heavenly, I missed that.  I'll try sticking with the small amounts of starch plan for a while longer and see what happens.

I made progress in January (3.5 pounds), but then went on a retreat with excellent & unlimited food (a deadly combination for me) & gained. I'm now back to the 3.5 pound loss, but want to be at an even 6 pound loss by the end of February. Unsure if that's realistic. We're going to Whistler for a week for skiing, and while that will be plenty of working out, I need to balance my eating. Skiing tends to make me very hungry, particularly for carbs & other filling food.

Tricks that have worked well so far. I've purchased a large package of mints, & keep them at my desk at work. After lunch, when I'd normally be tempted to have a treat, I have a mint. Has worked consistently. At home, after I've eaten my planned dinner, I have herbal tea.

I've struggled more on a consistent exercise routine, due to two work trips. I need to get back into the routine more quickly when it's disrupted, because travel is a constant in my life.

I aim for slow carbs rather than low carb,  and don’t know a thing about keto, so take my advice with a grain of salt. Would increasing your fibre intake via vegetables and seeds help? I recently made some flaxseed crackers that were easy to make and  tasted great. I paired them with some mushroom-lentil pate and was both very full and very regular afterwards.

@Sun Hat would you mind sharing or linking both of those recipes?  I eat a good bit of lentils and I love mushrooms:)

@freya, have you ever tried milk thistle tea?  A cup of Arbonne Detox Tea works perfectly for my occasional constipation.  It contains milk thistle, which is the key ingredient, and there are much cheaper options than Arbonne.  (A friend gave me the supply I currently have.)

Thanks OtherJen, good perspective!

I had a small serving of brown rice along with my sausage and vegetables for lunch...it was heavenly, I missed that.  I'll try sticking with the small amounts of starch plan for a while longer and see what happens.

Yum. Brown rice is so good.

Hey, this is working out great!  With the addition of the brown rice, potato, and winter squash (max about 1/2 cup cooked daily which shouldn't be more than 30 or so net carbs), on top of the prebiotic powder (mixed into some kefir or yogurt) plus a few tiger nuts daily, my digestion is working much better.  It turns out I had to cut down on the dairy a bit in addition to increasing the soluble fiber.

Vegetables for whatever reason don't seem to help - because the fiber they contain is mostly the insoluble type and that was only making the problem worse.  (btw thank you for the tip about milk thistle...will have to try that if I run into problems again.)

And it seems my weight loss is back on track, too:
Jan 7 138 lbs (unchanged since before Thanksgiving)
Last Sunday 137.4
This morning 136.6(!!)

No calorie counting, no fasting, no going hungry (in fact I feel pleasantly stuffed after meals) and no particular exercise routine outside of some yoga on weekends and walking to work (1 mile each way) during the week.  Lazy keto initially (after spending a couple of weeks tracking carbs and figuring out how to make it work) now modified to something like 50-70 net carbs daily, with no sugar and no grains apart from the brown rice.

Making meat loaf with liver today.  1 lb of ground beef mixed with 8 oz of chicken livers whirred through a blender to liquify (I know, a bit yucky but easier than chopping).  I use almond flour, eggs, and a bit of xanthan gum in place of bread crumbs, and I DON'T drain the beef fat - that is grass fed Omega3 goodness that I paid a lot for!!!  Top with Heinz no sugar ketchup and sour cream.  And broccoli plus a bit of potato (both buttered).  Small bowl of raspberries and cream for dessert along with those tiger nuts.  Breakfast was coffee with cream and coconut oil (mixed up with a hand frother), 2 eggs with onion and tomatillo & goat cheese, and a slice of bacon. No need for lunch except for a mug of salted homemade bone broth.

Gotta love keto...well I suppose this isn't technically keto now, but it certainly is low carb with most of the carbs coming from "safe starches" that are cooked in advance then socked into the fridge.  I don't know how seriously to take that resistant starch bit, but if I can lose weight with them then presumably they're not driving up insulin levels or triggering fat storage.

Awesome! It seems like your gut is very happy with those changes. Your daily menu sounds very delicious and filling.

I've seen a decent amount of information about resistant starch in the last several years, and did a bit of digging recently. Apparently the cooling process converts the starches into a configuration that is not as easily broken down into simple sugars by amylase in our alimentary canal, but is available for digestion by some gut microbes. It seems reasonable that something we've been eating (as a species) for millennia would have some benefit. My takeaway is that I can still have small servings of my beloved potatoes without spiking my blood sugar if I cook and cool them first and turn them into pan-fried potatoes or potato salad. :-)

Absolutely!!   And enjoy that potato salad!

One of these days I'll get hold of a blood sugar meter and check the effects of the different types of starches for myself.  If I can get over the squeamishness factor, that is.

It does help to note that the other positive effects of keto (more energy, less tired at night, sleeping better, random minor health issues like joint pain, foot pain, cankersores, gum tenderness gone) are still preserved after adding those starches.  So in the end I think all I really did was eliminate sugar, wheat and industrial vegetable oils.  And maybe that's all that's necessary to fix weight issues for many people.

January Start: 156
Feb 2: 154

Feb 9: 153.8

I had a "perfect" eating week so I was glad to see that I at least nudged down a tiny bit. Nothing as demotivating as doing everything right and seeing the scale register a gain.

I had a bit of that, worked out most days and ate healthy but didn't see a drop. Looking forward to this upcoming week with similar exercise and diet.

1/6: 236.4
1/13: 237.1
1/21: 238.0
1/26: 233.2
2/1: 229.2
2/10: 230.5

I was out of town for work. I tried not to overeat too much, but I definitely drank a lot. Gains weren't as bad as I was expecting.

Stepped on the scale for the first time in a while and was not happy. So I'm joining in this thread. Goal is to be at 125 (good weight for me) by the time we sell the house, likely to be early June.

Challenges: stressful time with many competing pulls. Living in 2 different places, adding a 3rd to the mix in June (though hopefully back at 2 since the house will sell)

Way to go about it: tracking food, eating from the 21 Day Fix container system, continuing to workout 5 days a week. No alcohol during the week; limit 1 glass of wine or a drink weekend nights.

2/10: 140.4

Woo!  Down .5 for last week.  I'm a slow loser so I'm pretty excited.  Now going to move from 18:6 fasting to Alternate day fasting.  Hopefully will jumpstart things.
