I’ll try to remember posting weekly.   But I’ll join in

Looking for a healthy 20 pound weight loss.  More running and weight training planned this year, and cutting sugar/beer to a minimum.  No fad diet BS.   Just steady, hard work

I'll join - I have 25.3kg to lose by the end of the year, which is a minimum. Added it to my goals spreadsheet as well. Will be achieved by walking and healthy eating and reining in the stress-binges at work.

I'm in.  I did this on and off in 2019 and here's where I came out:

1.14.19 -- 209.5
1.26.19 -- 206.5
6.23.19 -- 208.4
9.28.19 -- 197.2
10.11.19 -- 196.7
11.26.19 -- 202.3
1.3.20 -- 199.7

All things being equal, I'm pretty pleased with this.  10 pounds in a year is not going to break any records but it's sustainable.  My goal for 2020 is to get below 190 before the end of the summer and then to stay below 190 until the year end.  (Fall is my busy season at work so that's the best set-up).

I’m down about 5 pounds from last year. 5 more pounds to go. Will probably take about 5 or 6 months.

I'm in!  My focus for January is getting back to calorie tracking.  It's the only thing that has consistently worked for me, yet somehow I can't stay consistent with it.

Other things to ideally do:  Jazzercise 3x per week, low-key intermittent fast (less than 12 hour eating interval each day), get my meditation practice going again

I keep joining this group every year and keep failing but I am going to try again. I have 30 to lose and I so badly want it off otherwise I will need to get all new clothes.  This week wasnt good, remnants of the Holidays but I am ready to start again.

I am an emotional eater so it will be challenging but I need to start replacing my junk food with healthier options and reach for those more.

1/4/20 - 170

Me Too! (though I took 2019 off and still need to lose the same 10-15 pounds).

After calorie counting for years and even working with a nutritionist a few times in 2019 I am giving intermittent fasting a shot in 2020. My main concerns are belly fat and circulation issues. My hope is that getting down to my best weight will improve circulation.

I'm in. I had a goal to lose 10 pounds in 2019. I didn't lose but didn't gain anything. This year I have the same goal-10 pounds.  I plan to set weekly goals this year instead of one vague yearly goal. I am also going to cut WAY back on the alcohol and really focus on being consistent in my weight training and cardio.

I'm signing on here.  My first Monday weigh-in was not good this morning.  My goal is to lose 30-35 lbs. in the long run, but I think I'll be happy with 15-20 lbs in 2020 specifically.

One other side note, do y'all think I'm paranoid for being hesitant to post my actual weight?  It's not that I'm embarrassed, but it seems like one of those pieces of info that seems too personally identifiable to divulge onto the wilds of the internet.

I started Vinnie Tortorich's No Sugar No Grains to go along with my dry January.  Amazingly I am in ketosis just 6 days in and as always, find this plan really easy since I have never felt good after eating a lot of bread.  I saw "carb face" in some of my recent pictures and want to get on track before my first spring/summer of FIRE and before my golf league begins.  Some new cute clothes would be a nice reward.

Wanted to drop in and wish everyone the best of luck on their weight/health goals for 2020. Personally, I want to lose another 10-13 pounds after dropping around 20 pounds in 2019 using intermittent fasting. I've yo-yo dieted for years with bouts of healthy eating/weight loss followed by bouts of binge eating/weight gain. I've tried pretty much every diet program imaginable (keto, nutrisystem, south beach, etc.) and haven't ever had sustained success until IF. I know it's not for everyone, but it works for me. Whatever your method and whatever your goals, I hope to follow all of your successes in 2020

I weighed in at 236.4 lbs. today. I think I was about 220 lbs. in the military, so that’ll be my goal for 2020.

Plan of action:
Exercise at home 2-3 times per week
Forego the elevator at work
Intermittent fasting on workdays

I’m off to a great start...I rolled my ankle on a jog this evening.

Yeah, many successes for me over the last couple years and now is time for this.  My BP is just high enough now my doc just said I should try to lower it naturally over the next 6 months and if that doesn't work he'll put me on something.  I've creeped about 1 lb/year from my ideal weight 20 years ago so could stand to lose most of those 20 lbs, and the required exercise and cutting the crappy food (which I'm sure is the major source of my salt intake) combined might do the trick with the BP.

My goal is to get back to I was pre-middle of last summer. Alot of events have taken place and I have slowly had weight creep on. I want to lose or be at 195-198 by My Physical around April 15th. I have currently been weighing in between 212-215. So that range 195-198 for a week or two and Holding so April 1st makes more sense.

I joined last year’s thread and posted once every month, which helped me stay focused.

August 2018: 236.8
December 31, 2018: 198.8
December 31, 2019: 155

I’m already up about 4 lbs this month (whoops!). I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’s mostly water weight. I’m hoping to be in the low 150s by the end of the month. My ultimate goal is around 140.

Glad OP started the 2020 thread!!! :) I'll jump on in. I am mostly looking to maintain after dropping 25lbs last year with the help of calorie counting and HealthyWage (I was forced to focus when I had serious money on the line haha!)

I gained about 6lbs over Christmas vacay and have lost 1.5lbs of that in the last few days. 4.5lbs to go!! I would love to drop an additional 5-10lbs on top of that but don't think I am in the right headspace for that.

Sunday, Jan 6 2020: 135.8lbs
Thursday Jan 9 2020: 134.4lbs

In the past week:

Days exercised: 1
Elevator rides: 1
Breakfast skipped: ~0
Weight: 237.1 (+0.7)

Skipping breakfast has proven difficult. Even if I don't eat at home, my stomach is grumbling so much at work that it's difficult to concentrate, so I end up eating an apple w/ peanut butter around 9am every day. Still, going from ~6pm to ~9am the next day between meals feels decent. Dessert is the real problem. My sweet tooth is insatiable.

Twisting an ankle on day 1 was a bit of a set-back. It's now been a week, and the ankle/foot is still very sore, swollen, and a little bit purple.

I will say that fasting is WAY harder than I thought it would be in the mornings. My head pounds from the lack of coffee (I can't stomach black coffee) and it is very hard when I'm making everyone else's breakfasts and lunches. Conversely, the evenings are easier than I thought they would be.

I think I'm probably overeating a bit but will give this another few weeks before I adjust any further. My stomach does feel less bloated even though I haven't lost anything.

Exercise was good - have averaged 5 days for the last two weeks.

I'm going to post the delta.

Today was weight day, and I'm down 3 lbs.  I've noticed in my weight history that there's some kind of hysteresis in my weight.  When I go into lose-weight mode I'll drop 2 or 3 lbs almost instantly.  I'm pretty sure it's not fat but just something related to my change in habits.  Does anybody have any ideas what might cause that?

Generally when you cut back the first thing to go is your glycogen stores. This is accompanied by a lot of water. So the first loss is generally water weight.

I started Keto end of June and was greeted by a 10 lb loss in the first week. Since then I've been between about 0.9 and 1.5 lb per week.

Yeah, that's probably safe to assume.

This is also the reason why if you have a day where you overeat you can gain a bunch of weight overnight. No way you put pounds of fat on in a day. Don't be discouraged it's probably just water weight and will go away over the next couple days.

My ideal weight would involve loosing about 50 pounds.  I'm currently 8 pounds into obesity and feel terrible about it, physically and emotionally.  But 50 pounds seems too high for one year, so I think I might try for 20 pounds, though I'd be happy with just 10 to start.  I'm going to start by cutting way back on alcohol, slowly adding in exercise and finding a healthy snack (I emotionally eat and work from home, it's a terrible combination).  I'm intrigued by your success in intermittent fasting, @brandon1827. I fast for religious reasons and have found it pretty easy for me, but I was hesitant to try it for weight loss.  I think I'll read up about it now.

I've struggled with slow creeping weight gain for years before I figured out some principles that work for me. Late November  I (self) published a book on Amazon on this topic. If anyone is interested in reading the book, no need to purchase it, I'll send you a copy (PM me). Even though it's already published, I'd like to get feedback and can still make updates.

Here's a summary:

- The reason that the majority of people in the US (71%) are clinically overweight or obese is because we have become more prosperous. We're wealthier, so we eat more and better. Better is defined as what has helped us survive famine and food shortages throughout history.

- Food is constantly available, tempting and cheap. It's highly processed to make it as tempting as possible. Rats, in an environment of constantly available "junk" foods gain a tremendous amount of weight. Humans are no different. The more highly tempting foods are available, the more we'll eat.

- One of the best tools available for weight loss is stepping on the scale daily. But it's a habit that has been bad-mouthed endlessly. I have a whole section in my book on the myths and realities of weighing yourself daily, and another on the pitfalls of considering stepping on the scale as a "moment of truth".

- Stepping on the scale daily is very helpful, and keeps things real. But of course, you need to change your food habits. The best way to do that is with personalized food rules. The food rules need to:
--- Reduce the number of calories you take in
--- Be sustainable for a lifetime,
--- Not make you unhappy or unable to socialize over the long term.

I give lots of examples of good food rules. For me, the rules are:
- Weigh myself every day, and log my weight
- Avoid highly processed foods completely (with a few exceptions)
- Sweets and other treats are okay, as long as I make them myself. For example - things like homemade oatmeal raisin cookies, homemade popcorn with butter and salt are fine. The key is that I have put some work into them. And of course, you still have to monitor quantities.

My very first rule, back when I was experimenting with rules for myself, was "No french fries". This worked really well, and helped me discover the magic of abstinence over moderation. This was a breakthrough. Abstinence is not for everybody, but the moderation can be much more difficult for many people. And I think it's getting even more difficult, as foods become more and more addictive.

I'm in, for once.  I've not had trouble maintaining a healthy weight mostly.  Two years ago I was running a lot, and fast, and gave up wheat, so it was easy.

Last year - I was coming back from injury.  My running wasn't where it was, but my chocolate consumption went through the roof.  So yeah.  I also started weightlifting.  The combination of those 3 things (running not as fast or as far, weight training, and chocolate) tacked on 13 pounds.

Considering that I like the added muscle, I think my goal this year is to lose about 7-11 pounds.  Like, I'll know it when I get there (when most of my pants fit well again, instead of 2 pairs fitting, 2 pairs a little tight, and 2 pairs not happening).  From a fitness standpoint, I'm looking for maintenance, so I shouldn't have to spend too much effort (mental/physical) in all this training.

I've lost 40lb in a bit more than 6 months by adopting a low carb diet (20 or fewer carbs/day) and managing my calories to be at a reasonable deficit. Low carb, "enough" protein and enough fat to not feel hungry anymore. Meat, Fish, low carb Dairy, and lots of veg.

I'm surprised at how fast this happened. I'm not hungry all the time, I get to eat good food, and I don't  miss sugar, starch, pasta, potatoes, rice, whatever very much any more. I am finally feeling like I'm in control of my eating.

My blood markers have all improved tremendously, I have lower blood pressure. I don't get tired in the middle of the afternoon like I used to on my normal diet. It's great.

It can be hard to stick with it in social situations but I pretty much can find something to eat or politely say no thank you in any environment at this point.

I have about 25 lb to go. At that point I should be at 15% body fat or so which is a place I've never been my entire adult life.

7/19- had blood drawn and I have high cholesterol/triglycerides. This wasn't a surprise.. I was able to get it down with diet after doing the Whole 30 a few years ago. But it has increased again.
7/19- weight 168
1/20- weight 160

Blood test is in another month and I'd like to get as close to 155 as I can. I have been running but I need to be better with the diet.

My biggest struggles are around travel (both work & personal). Particularly on the work side, I'm jet lagged, have less control over what I eat, drink with colleagues, and work out less. I'm also tired during & after the trip. I have my first international trip coming up (Tokyo on Saturday), so my goal is to stick to my plans around limiting alcohol, no sweets, & keeping up my workout plans. It's going to be a big adjustment for me.

I track my calories, and have started doing a weekly calorie average, for me to really see when & how things get off track. I work out plenty (when I'm not traveling), but can do more to make my time more efficient while working out.

We have free food (all day, every day - meals & snacks) at work. This occasionally gets hard for me, but once I give up the treats/snacks, I do well at sticking with it.

Year off to a good start. I’m down another pound or so this month. Hitting new adult lows. Part of that is muscle loss as I have scaled way back on weight training and ramped up cardio because it’s more fun. But moving forward I’m going to do at least 1 intense weight class a week. My goal is to loose another couple of pounds over the next few months to get below the next zero threshold. Then I will stop as it will give me a buffer to gain a few in the summer when I drink more wine. I agree with the tips above about weighing yourself everyday. I keep a log but also just discovered Happy scale and loaded the last 6 months of data in there. Very interesting.

I’m in. I want to lose the 13 lbs that I gained last year from emotional eating (poor coping mechanism for an emotional shock/trauma).

We’ve made some significant dietary changes this month due to some emerging metabolic issues for husband, and he would also benefit from losing weight. We’re eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, significantly less alcohol and dairy, almost no red meat, and less animal protein in general (in favor of legumes). I’ve started measuring portions again. I haven’t seen a downward shift in the scale yet, but I’ve also been dealing with the female hormone cycle/bloating. The scale has stopped creeping upward, so that’s encouraging. He hasn’t seen much scale movement yet, but he feels a lot better and looks less bloated. All good signs.

We hope to get a regular exercise schedule in place by the end of the month.

I need to lose 10 lbs because I'm down to only 1 pair of pants that fit. I just wrote an accountability post on my blog to help motivate me and have scheduled to post it later in the week because I'm afraid to hit the button myself LOL. I'm hoping that'll be the motivation I need to stay focused and that I won't chicken out and just hit delete.

2) p90x3 + two days of circuits with weights

3) South Beach

Those all worked for me before.

Goal: 179.9 by Memorial Day!

Excited to join this thread.   Got pretty off the health track in 2019 with work stress, doing an intense certification program.  I have 50lbs to lose.
Going to try plant-based based on some other health issues.  Along with 15:9 intermittent fasting.

I failed to weigh-in yesterday, due to the holiday throwing off my schedule. I doubt there was much of a change though. My ankle sprain hasn't improved at all, so physical activity for two weeks has been zero.

I've tried to count calories in the past, and it is so inconvenient that it makes me not want to bother. Having to measure out how much of each food/ingredient is such a hassle, even with apps that are supposed to make it easier.

For instance, today I had a bowl of cereal. It's one cup per serving. How many cups did I have? I don't know- maybe 1.5 cups. That isn't so difficult, but then we get to coffee. I had a 20 oz. cup and creamer. How much creamer? I have no idea. I use a lot, but how much is that? I'll guess 3 tablespoons, but who knows how accurate that is? Then I had a carbonated water. That's just breakfast, and it took me 10 minutes to badly estimate.

I am still finding intermittent fasting to be difficult but mostly when I'm cooking for others during my fasting times. I have really become aware of spoon licking and crumb eating.

It took about three weeks but the headaches seem to have subsided for the most part. I do feel less bloated all around. And weirdly, I think I lose weight in my wrists first? Is that even a thing? I noticed I needed to take my fitbit band down a notch this AM.

I’m in. I’m a stress eater with a crazy sweet tooth. I’ve cut out alcohol for now and have lost about 13 lbs since late summer, with just that one change.

Now I’m on a mission to consistently weigh myself everyday, stay away from sweets and increase exercise. My goal is for the exercise to alleviate stress, in lieu of sweets.

I have more to lose than I’m willing to post here, but will start with a focus on losing another 10 lbs between now and the end of March. There, I put it in writing for the MMM world to see and to help hold me accountable.

I am in. My Q1 goal is to lose 13 pounds by April 5. So far, I am up .2 lbs but I did have a large salty bowl of Ramen last night!

Keys to success for me are prepping meals based on calorie count, actually eating those meals instead of deviating from the plan, and sticking to a workout plan.

My weigh-in this week was good.  I'm down another 0.8lbs for a total of 3.8lbs so far.  I actually got out and took a 5 mile walk on Sunday night to make up for a big splurge on Saturday.

I have currently been weighing in between 212-215. So that range 195-198 for a week or two and Holding so April 1st makes more sense.

The easiest and most accurate thing to do would be get a flat food scale, probably.  Put your bowl on there, tare it, add your cereal, tare again, add milk.  Coffee mug, tare, creamer, then coffee (or vice versa).  That way you don't need to worry about cleaning measuring spoons/cups.

I'm in for weight loss in 2020!  I reached my highest weight in December 2017 at 252 pounds.  I was 228 at the beginning of 2019, then I got pregnant.  I count calories using MyFitnessPal (I highly recommend it!) and I don't really restrict what I eat other than that.  (Ice cream, pizza, cheesesteak sandwiches?  Yes please.)  Fortunately, I'm on a very strict budget (hair on fire debt situation) so I won't be getting any of my calories from fast food for quite a while.

Last weigh in was 1.4.2020:  205 lb.
Goal:  Lose 30 or more pounds in 2020, with an average loss of 0.5-1.0 lb per week

Good luck, all!

I'm not going for weight so much as fat, i'd like to lose maybe 5# total, but replace more with muscle. I started P90x last week of December - down 3.5" off the beer gut/dad bod already, but weight ~ the same, which i see as a win!

I started tracking calories this week. It is a pain in the ass, but it sure has been helpful, at least with this small sample bias. I'm going for 2k/day limit, so I don't expect that level of loss to be sustained.

My solution is to measure once, and then keep the dishes the same.  I know my usual bowls hold 1 cup when they're reasonably full, I've seen how much creamer is two spoons in my usual cup, etc.

Well, first international work trip happened. The first 3 days, I crushed my goals. After that, I did way better than usual, but not as well as I'd wanted. I'm tracking alcohol weekly, and was shocked by how much more I drink when I travel for work. Like, double. So, that's an area for improvement. I avoided sweets for the entire trip, minus two very small bites. This is huge for me, as jet lag & lack of sleep pushes me to depend on sweets & caffeine.

I've also lost 3.8 lbs in January, and hit my low in Tokyo, so this was a big win. My goal for the rest of the month (heading out on another trip on Tuesday) is to maintain. If I can lose .2 lbs more, even better.

End of Week 3 update: Down 3.4 pounds, or more than 25% to my goal of 13 pounds this quarter.

Workout goals for this week are to complete 3 interval sessions at the gym, 5 times 30 minutes of cardio, and 2 lifting sessions; meals are prepped for the week, so again need to focus on eating them instead of other snacks/meals.

I count calories using MyFitnessPal (I highly recommend it!)

My Fitness Pal is great!  I just downloaded it again at New Year.  I've managed three periods of significant weight loss in my adult life, and it was using MFP every time.  I find that it helps me stay accountable to myself.  Like there was cake in the coffee area at work today, but I stopped myself having some because I knew it would mean that I had get the phone out and log the calories.  The app is linked to my activity tracker too (I walk a lot) so the net daily calories are pretty easy to track.  My only problem is when I reach a happy weight, the MFP use stops and the weight starts to creep up again....

Anyway, I started the year at 93kg - the heaviest I've ever been - and I want to get down to 85kg by summer.  Down 3kg already!

I'm doing Myfitnesspal, too.  It does get old sometimes having to log everything I eat, but it works.

Incidentally, I did have a piece of break room cake, but if I track everything I can budget and make up for it somewhere else.  If you develop good habits and learn how to budget, you can have some controlled indulgences.  Honestly I think it makes it easier if you know that you don't have to totally deprive yourself.  The cake was REALLY good, too.  Worth it.

Late joiner here, had started a weight loss bet with some coworkers around thanksgiving but all 4 of us were doing pretty shitty so we extended the end date from valentine's day to end of March. My wife also signed me up for the transformation challenge at Orange Theory so I've worked out quite a bit these past 2 weeks (average of 4 times per week).

Weight has dropped from about 227 in January to 222.8 on Jan 31st.

My ultimate goal is sub 200 lbs but I'll settle for 208 (95kg) by our upcoming trip on March 25th so that's about 15lbs in 7.5 weeks which seems doable.

1.14.19 -- 209.5

6.23.19 -- 208.4
9.28.19 -- 197.2

11.26.19 -- 202.3
1.3.20 -- 199.7
2.1.20 -- 198.9

I'm OK with this.  Today's weigh-in was a little high compared to earlier this week, so this isn't just a water weight shift but a tiny loss.  I haven't been tracking vigorously, just trying to moderate some indulgences with some very healthy meal-prepped work lunches.  I'm planning to step up my efforts over time but have been tracking other goals for January and didn't want to overwhelm myself and give up.

I bought a bunch of beer for a superbowl party, so I'm going to practice being very careful about not slipping into a "beer a day" habit and being deliberate about storing them and only bringing them out for a special weekend treat.

Going to check in next month, good luck everyone!

Bit off topic perhaps but one way I keep myself motivated is to remember my food intake for last year's superbowl. I went to some party and consumed tons. We don't have party plans tomorrow so just on that one day I might get ahead by 2000 calories compared to 2019.

Doesn't matter a whole lot in the grand scheme but it does motivate me.

I was doing so well sigh. Then came a week vacation. I did surf everyday sometimes 2x but also ate everything in sight. And oh my consumed all the rum punch. Yesterday I went from a work brunch to a steak dinner for family bday. Next week I’m going to Charleston for work and staying the weekend. After that I will asses the damage. Eating mostly veggies for next 2 days at least.

A month in and I might be starting to feel comfortable with fasting. I'm still very hungry at 10am most days, but as long as work isn't horribly stressful I can generally make it until noon. I think the thing I like about fasting is that it seems easier to fall off plan for a day if you need to than it does when you are just calorie counting or whatever.

I am reading the Obesity Code and it is interesting and seems very sensible.

Alright, I actually started at 172, I am down to 166. So while I will take it I am sure some is water weight.  But I am actually eating Much less and exercising everyday. Nothing strenuous. Last thing I need is to hurt myself and stop what I am doing.

I am feeling better in my clothes, have less heartburn so I am not willing to give that up. It’s giving me motivation to continue.

I also try and not step on the scale all that that often. It can be a demotivated for me. I go by how I feel in my clothes. Although, curiosity is getting the better of me lately.

Keep it up everyone.

I'm in!  Fixing to reverse years of creeping weight gain!

125 lbs in my 30s
135 lbs once I hit 40
Up to 161 lbs (yikes) after menopause - despite many attempts at calorie-restricted diets

I started a ketogenic diet last August.  I'm now at 137 lbs and feel GREAT.  No fasting, no change in exercising, and NEVER hungry.  In fact, I have less problems with getting hungry than I ever did before keto.

The feeling great part is the best thing about keto...except one problem: the infamous keto constipation.  It's BAD.  I'm pretty much 100% dependent on laxatives (Mg citrate).  And I was clock-regular and perfectly normal in that department pre-keto.   I tried all the tricks recommended online, but I think I might just be one of those people who need a bit of starch in my life.   So I tried small amounts of potato or rice (cooled after cooking then reheated) plus a prebiotic supplement at double the usual dose, and FINALLY had a normal poop - wow.  But it's also stopped the weight loss.  So I'm thinking to try Bob's Red Mill potato starch instead of the potatoes and rice next (and would be nice to quit that pricey prebiotic supplement).

Wondering what the rest of you low-carbers are doing about this?

Honestly, you had a pretty rapid (average ~1 lb/week) and impressive period of weight loss. It’s normal for that rate to slow or plateau as you get closer to your target weight (I’m working on 10-11 lbs. and it’s slow-going). Constipation is not healthy for your colon so I would prioritize that over further rapid weight loss, especially if your weight is in a normal/healthy range for your height. I suspect that over time, you would still see gradual weight loss even with small servings of foods containing resistant starch (potato would probably be a better choice because it also contains a decent amount of fiber). Potato starch shouldn’t be a problem in terms of blood glucose if added to meals.

I made progress in January (3.5 pounds), but then went on a retreat with excellent & unlimited food (a deadly combination for me) & gained. I'm now back to the 3.5 pound loss, but want to be at an even 6 pound loss by the end of February. Unsure if that's realistic. We're going to Whistler for a week for skiing, and while that will be plenty of working out, I need to balance my eating. Skiing tends to make me very hungry, particularly for carbs & other filling food.

Tricks that have worked well so far. I've purchased a large package of mints, & keep them at my desk at work. After lunch, when I'd normally be tempted to have a treat, I have a mint. Has worked consistently. At home, after I've eaten my planned dinner, I have herbal tea.

I've struggled more on a consistent exercise routine, due to two work trips. I need to get back into the routine more quickly when it's disrupted, because travel is a constant in my life.

I aim for slow carbs rather than low carb,  and don’t know a thing about keto, so take my advice with a grain of salt. Would increasing your fibre intake via vegetables and seeds help? I recently made some flaxseed crackers that were easy to make and  tasted great. I paired them with some mushroom-lentil pate and was both very full and very regular afterwards.

@Sun Hat would you mind sharing or linking both of those recipes?  I eat a good bit of lentils and I love mushrooms:)

@freya, have you ever tried milk thistle tea?  A cup of Arbonne Detox Tea works perfectly for my occasional constipation.  It contains milk thistle, which is the key ingredient, and there are much cheaper options than Arbonne.  (A friend gave me the supply I currently have.)

Thanks OtherJen, good perspective!

I had a small serving of brown rice along with my sausage and vegetables for lunch...it was heavenly, I missed that.  I'll try sticking with the small amounts of starch plan for a while longer and see what happens.

Yum. Brown rice is so good.

Hey, this is working out great!  With the addition of the brown rice, potato, and winter squash (max about 1/2 cup cooked daily which shouldn't be more than 30 or so net carbs), on top of the prebiotic powder (mixed into some kefir or yogurt) plus a few tiger nuts daily, my digestion is working much better.  It turns out I had to cut down on the dairy a bit in addition to increasing the soluble fiber.

Vegetables for whatever reason don't seem to help - because the fiber they contain is mostly the insoluble type and that was only making the problem worse.  (btw thank you for the tip about milk thistle...will have to try that if I run into problems again.)

And it seems my weight loss is back on track, too:
Jan 7 138 lbs (unchanged since before Thanksgiving)
Last Sunday 137.4
This morning 136.6(!!)

No calorie counting, no fasting, no going hungry (in fact I feel pleasantly stuffed after meals) and no particular exercise routine outside of some yoga on weekends and walking to work (1 mile each way) during the week.  Lazy keto initially (after spending a couple of weeks tracking carbs and figuring out how to make it work) now modified to something like 50-70 net carbs daily, with no sugar and no grains apart from the brown rice.

Making meat loaf with liver today.  1 lb of ground beef mixed with 8 oz of chicken livers whirred through a blender to liquify (I know, a bit yucky but easier than chopping).  I use almond flour, eggs, and a bit of xanthan gum in place of bread crumbs, and I DON'T drain the beef fat - that is grass fed Omega3 goodness that I paid a lot for!!!  Top with Heinz no sugar ketchup and sour cream.  And broccoli plus a bit of potato (both buttered).  Small bowl of raspberries and cream for dessert along with those tiger nuts.  Breakfast was coffee with cream and coconut oil (mixed up with a hand frother), 2 eggs with onion and tomatillo & goat cheese, and a slice of bacon. No need for lunch except for a mug of salted homemade bone broth.

Gotta love keto...well I suppose this isn't technically keto now, but it certainly is low carb with most of the carbs coming from "safe starches" that are cooked in advance then socked into the fridge.  I don't know how seriously to take that resistant starch bit, but if I can lose weight with them then presumably they're not driving up insulin levels or triggering fat storage.

Awesome! It seems like your gut is very happy with those changes. Your daily menu sounds very delicious and filling.

I've seen a decent amount of information about resistant starch in the last several years, and did a bit of digging recently. Apparently the cooling process converts the starches into a configuration that is not as easily broken down into simple sugars by amylase in our alimentary canal, but is available for digestion by some gut microbes. It seems reasonable that something we've been eating (as a species) for millennia would have some benefit. My takeaway is that I can still have small servings of my beloved potatoes without spiking my blood sugar if I cook and cool them first and turn them into pan-fried potatoes or potato salad. :-)

Absolutely!!   And enjoy that potato salad!

One of these days I'll get hold of a blood sugar meter and check the effects of the different types of starches for myself.  If I can get over the squeamishness factor, that is.

It does help to note that the other positive effects of keto (more energy, less tired at night, sleeping better, random minor health issues like joint pain, foot pain, cankersores, gum tenderness gone) are still preserved after adding those starches.  So in the end I think all I really did was eliminate sugar, wheat and industrial vegetable oils.  And maybe that's all that's necessary to fix weight issues for many people.

January Start: 156
Feb 2: 154

I had a "perfect" eating week so I was glad to see that I at least nudged down a tiny bit. Nothing as demotivating as doing everything right and seeing the scale register a gain.

I had a bit of that, worked out most days and ate healthy but didn't see a drop. Looking forward to this upcoming week with similar exercise and diet.

Stepped on the scale for the first time in a while and was not happy. So I'm joining in this thread. Goal is to be at 125 (good weight for me) by the time we sell the house, likely to be early June.

Challenges: stressful time with many competing pulls. Living in 2 different places, adding a 3rd to the mix in June (though hopefully back at 2 since the house will sell)

Way to go about it: tracking food, eating from the 21 Day Fix container system, continuing to workout 5 days a week. No alcohol during the week; limit 1 glass of wine or a drink weekend nights.

2/10: 140.4

Woo!  Down .5 for last week.  I'm a slow loser so I'm pretty excited.  Now going to move from 18:6 fasting to Alternate day fasting.  Hopefully will jumpstart things.

No alcohol during the week; limit 1 glass of wine or a drink weekend nights.

That's an important fix!  Alcohol packs a lot of calories and it's metabolized like fructose meaning it either gets burned up right away or it becomes fat.  I used have a small glass of wine (maybe 1/3 a restaurant glass) at night as part of my workday decompression.   Now I have a glass of sparkling water maybe with a no-calorie flavor squirt instead.

BTW how old is everyone etc?  I'm 57 and post-menopausal, which is how the weight gain happened.   I think that makes a difference in dietary approaches...it's REALLY hard to shed pounds in menopause and until I tried keto I thought nothing would work.

I'm 41. Currently trying to get back to 110-112 lbs because I'm just barely 5 feet tall and that's a healthy, comfortable weight for my frame.

After a major emotional shock+stress eating last spring and all the winter holiday food, I was at 125 lbs at the New Year and am at 121 lbs now. Most of that 4-lb loss was from cutting waaaaay back on alcohol (from two drinks per night to maybe three per week) and almost entirely cutting out simple carbs.

I'm 50, in peri-menopause. 5'3" tall.

I hit a high of 165 when pregnant (youngest is 18) and never really lost it until about 7 years ago. As of 3 years ago I was comfortably at 125-130, where I stayed until about a year ago. I was pretty happy to be there and am not happy with where I am now. It's a vicious cycle as I like food and eating well and also like exercising; when I am feeling "fluffy" my mojo to do anything goes out the window, which makes me more fluffy.

I feel ya.  I'm almost 50, 5'2.5".

My comfy spot a year or so ago was 131-136.  I was running a lot.

I had some injuries and stress and our scale broke.  I started weight lifting.  I gained about 15 pounds.

So anyway, early Jan cut back on late night snacking and chocolate.

With the weightlifting, I don't think my comfy spot is the same, it's prob a few pounds higher.  I figure I'll know when I get there (less "fluffy").

One of the ways that I judge it, is work pants.

Usually I have:
2 pairs that are a little loose
3 pairs that fit well
2 pairs that are a little snug

Early Jan, these were
2 pair that were a little snug
3 pair that were uncomfortably snug
2 pairs that weren't coming on no way no how.

So we are back to normal at least.  I'd still like to lose about an inch off the waist and hips.

Progress continues!

age 20:  110 lbs
age 30:  125 lbs (ideal)
age 40:  135 lbs
age 50:  started creeping up above 140 lbs
8/1/2019 - 161 lbs.  Started keto diet.
1/1/2019 - 138 lbs.  Started adding "safe starches" (potatoes and brown rice) in mid-Januaray
2/2/2019 - 137.4
2/9/2019 - 136.6
2/16/2019 - 136.0

And, the GI problems have been nicely solved.  In addition to the dietary starches I got some Bob's Red Mill unmodified potato starch (grocery) and some powdered psyllium husk (Amazon).  2 tablespoons of the potato starch and a spoonful of the psyllium husk mixed into yogurt or kefir has become my favorite "after school" snack.  I wish I could get these results entirely through diet, but I think that's just hard to do without leading the life of a prehistoric hunter gatherer and eating the fiber-rich ancient tubers that differ so much from what we have access to.

(BTW recommend not taking these in the AM unless you want to be, ahem, serenading your colleagues at work.)

A bit frustrated as I had another mostly perfect eating week. I did have a glass of wine last night so maybe it was that? My body fights for every pound as I get close to 150. I just need to remind myself it takes absolute dedication because my circulation and health are important.

6 lbs down in 1.5 months?  I'd say you're doing great!

There's a certain amount of natural fluctuation on the scale, so wouldn't sweat the occasional ups and downs.  You want to see trends over periods of maybe a month before you decide you're stalled.  FWIW I was stalled for almost 3 months (Nov - Jan) but now losing weight again.  Fine since I'm not in a hurry.  Also, I'm happier losing at a slow pace of ~0.5 lbs/week, because I keep thinking if I lose too fast I might have more of a chance of gaining it back later - because my body might be thinking it's in a starvation mode now and is quietly planning to make up for it later as soon as I give it half a chance.

I think I have to jump on the calorie counting bandwagon :(

I was trying to avoid it by doing things like fasting until dinner one day a week, and trying to get a minimum of 500 g of veggies a day, but the snacking is strong, and I'm maintaining or gaining right now.  I will seriously just eat and eat and eat delicious things (sweet or savory, doesn't matter) past the point of discomfort if I don't have to be accountable to myself by writing it all down.  I'm honestly not sure how to get past this.

For now, I guess tracking is going to have to be the solution.  I'm going to start out at 2000 cal/day and tweak from there.  I'm breastfeeding an 11 month old, so I have probably 400-500 calories of wiggle room, and now that I'm lifting weights or spinning 4 times a week, I hope my calorie limit for loss will be higher than I think.  My husband just ordered 10 boxes of Thin Mints, so...

Weight this morning, 2/17 - 153.6 lbs

My "comfortable" weight before having kids was ~135 lbs, but I suspect that's changed.  I'd be happy to get down to 145 at the moment, and see how that feels.  I think last year my goal was to get down into the 140s, and then I gained 5 lbs over the holidays because I stopped weighing myself and convinced myself I "wasn't doing that bad".  See where that gets me.

I'm going to a beach wedding at the end of April, and my main goal right now is to fit into the dress I've borrowed so I don't have to fail the "Don't buy any clothes in 2020" challenge :)  It ALMOST zips up right now, so hopefully with lifting weights and keeping the binge eating to a minimum, two months will be enough time.

Posting to follow and learn. I started at about 240 in November 2018. Got down to about 200 and am at about 205-210 right now.

I think my optimal weight is about 190. I’d like to get there before the end of the year and hopefully stay there.

This sounds worrying...are there reasons why you might be bingeing that maybe could be worked out with counseling?  I don't mean to intrude and feel free not to respond, but phrases like "past the point of discomfort" are red flags.

Fasting doesn’t always work as well for premenopausal women as for postmenopausal women or men. It can disrupt our hormone cycles and induce physiological stress. You may find it much easier to avoid bingeing and more comfortable to track calories and split the total daily amount into 3 or 4 meals spread out over 10 or 12 hours.

I'm not sure it's something that needs counseling.  Maybe?  I've never thought about that before.  I've always just thought of it as a really bad habit.

I tell myself I snack when I'm doing other things - watching TV, reading, making lunches for the kids, cleaning the kitchen.  It's MOSTLY proximity, an apparent desire to chew things (? I've been snacking on carrot sticks, and it's almost as satisfying, as long as I start with them), and being "distracted" by whatever else I'm doing.   When I'm retrospectively realizing that I more than occasionally snack to the point of discomfort, though, I guess there are a lot of other times, like when I've eaten 3/4 of a bag of M&Ms and thought "I'm getting really sick of these, but there are only 20 left, I may as well eat them all...", or "I've already eaten four cookies, what's two more?", which are not great.

You may be right about fasting.  So far once a week until dinner hasn't been bad, but that might be due to a huge caloric excess the rest of the week that's just sitting in reserve in my digestive system, ha.  I don't think it will be nearly as comfortable or easy if I'm eating a normal amount of calories on a day-to-day basis, especially with breastfeeding/pumping.

I've started planning and tracking meals, which is like the thousandth time I've done this in my life, but whatever, at least I know how.  Barring crazy things happening, I'm done having kids, so I don't have the excuse of "I'm just going to be pregnant next year anyway" to wave away the desire to be in better shape.  We'll see.  I don't want to have to track forever, I want to be able to eat a normal, necessary amount of delicious food without eating an entire pint of ice cream instead of just a bowl.

That is good to know about fasting before menopause! I hadn't come across that in any of the books I've read (but I'm also generally only fasting 14-16 hours at a time). I actually decided to take yesterday and today off from fasting because the scale isn't moving and I'm hungry. I'm pretty sure I'm hormonal which always includes a major hunger spike for me.

Years of calorie counting have taught me that if I eat above 1500 for an extended period of time I will gain weight. I was hoping that fasting would let me eat more calories if I limited the hours as I'm hoping for improved insulin response to mitigate the extra calories. I am probably still going to keep giving fasting a try for a bit, but now I will pay attention to hormonal indicators.

Time to check in again:

1/6/2020:     0 (start)
1/13/2020:  -3.0
1/20/2020:  -3.8
1/27/2020:  -5.8
2/11/2020:  -3.0
2/17/2020:  -5.6

I went on vacation the week before last, and I gave myself a pass.  I'm having trouble fully getting back on track, but I seem to be doing well enough to still have lost weight this past week..

New low weight today for 2020, I was at or below this weight for about 3-4 days in mid 2019 but was never able to sustain it.

Been sticking with a great workout routine this time and even when I go off the rails I can keep it limited to a meal or a day.

11/25/19: 226lbs
1/20/20: 231lbs
2/19/20: 219.3lbs
Goal #1: 208lbs

Chaskavitch, glad to know it's just habitual snacking.

I used to feel the need to snack a lot too, before I went low carb - which means high fat.  Counterintuitive, but a diet devoid of sugars and simple starches, with fat contributing the majority of calories, puts your blood sugar and appetite on an even keel so you won't need to snack.  Sugars put your blood sugar on a roller coaster and spikes up your insulin.  Both of those make you hungry an hour or two after meals.

Perhaps you could try that?  Eliminate sugar and cut down on the grains & potatoes, and add fat to your meals (butter, eggs, bacon etc).  Snack on nuts and cheese instead of chips.  It might take a while for your body to adjust.  Most important also:  get the snacky crap out of the house so you're not tempted.

Down 4.4 pounds since Jan 6.

I'm sitting about two pounds above my "goal" trend line that gets me to my Q1 goal of -13 pounds by April 5.

Still holding at 121 lbs after a very stressful week and several restaurant meals, including one with a couple of generous alcoholic drinks. I'm okay with that. Getting back to the reduced-slow carb diet and more filling home-cooked meals should help.

I definitely feel better overall when I eat lower carb, and I snack less.  It's a good idea, and I do love eggs and avocado and butter :)  Thanks for suggesting it.

I can't get rid of all of the snacky stuff, because my husband is sad when we have no chips or crackers or whatever.  The man has never gained an excess pound in his life, but it's not his fault, I guess.  I can at least eliminate a lot of the sweet things, which would help a lot.  I'm a little worried I've passed on my sweet tooth to our 4 year old, so hopefully having fewer sweet snacks will help him as well.

My husband likes snacks, too. The only one I really can't leave alone is potato chips, so we don't keep those in the house. I can usually ignore the crackers in favor of a handful of raw almonds or piece of cheese.

I started a Keto Diet on Feb 2 a Sunday. So during my walk I stop at a Publix grocery store and weigh myself on their scale. At the start I was 166lbs, after 1 week 163lbs, after 2 weeks 159-3/4lbs. I'll update after my walk today. I'm hoping for another 3lbs, but I know I slipped a little and didn't keep my Ketones up.

No change on last week's weigh-in:

8/1/2019 - 161 lbs.  Started keto diet.
1/1/2019 - 138 lbs.  Started adding "safe starches" (potatoes and brown rice) in mid-January
2/2/2019 - 137.4
2/9/2019 - 136.6
2/16/2019 - 136.0
2/23/2019 - 136.0

I think I can credit that to having two drinks and a meal out with the family at a restaurant where I know everything was loaded with sugar.   Doesn't seem like much.  It appears I'm not very carb tolerant.

December 31, 2019: 155
January 31, 2020: 157

Holy crap! I haven’t lost this much weight in one month in over a year. The strange thing is that I haven’t made a lot of changes. I was injured for a big chunk of the month. Although I continue working out 5-6 days/week, I’m wondering if some of the weight loss is due to muscle loss. I can’t imagine that I actually lost over 7 lbs of fat in one month.

Once I lose just 0.8 lbs more, I’ll be in the healthy BMI category. My lowest adult weight is 145. I’m so close to that weight. I’m looking forward to getting back to that weight.

Wow, great work goinganon!  I also have good news to report (btw, just realized I had mistakenly used "2019" dates).

8/1/2019 - 161 lbs.  Started keto diet.
1/1/2020 - 138 lbs.  Started adding "safe starches" (potatoes and brown rice) in mid-January
2/2/2020 - 137.4
2/9/2020 - 136.6
2/16/2020 - 136.0
2/23/2020 - 136.0
2/28/2020 - 134.8  Started supplementing magnesium (consistently).

I generally don't like taking supplements, but I've been finding that magnesium is very helpful, for improved sleep and general well being.  I can't deal with swallowing horse pills on a regular basis, and I dislike the mg citrate powders because they function more as laxatives.  So I wasn't taking it regularly.

Then I found the "magnesium water" recipe:  take a 2 liter bottle of unflavored seltzer water, add 3 Tbsp unflavored Good Sense milk of magnesia (or a brand that doesn't contain sodium hypoclorite, i.e. bleach), shake and let sit for about an hour (shake once more mid-wait).  There's a chemical reaction between the Mg oxide and the carbonic acid in the seltzer, and you get Mg carbonate which is much better absorbed than any other form.  You drink half a cup of this twice a day.  Super cheap too!

Week 2 check-in.

2/17 - Started at 153.6
2/23 - 152.9
2/29 - 151.4

My weight this morning was up a lb, so that will throw off averages this week even if I keep losing.  We had friends over yesterday and between jalapeno poppers, loaded nachos, and cheesecake, I was probably 1k over my calorie goal, even though I wasn't outrageously full.  It was just a lot of very calorie-dense food.  We'll see!

It's been pretty rainy here, too, but I wish I could blame that.  I'm pretty sure I'd have been unmotivated even if the weather had been nice.  The weather was really nice yesterday, though, and I went for a long hike.  Maybe good weather would help out?

And this was despite a few indulgences during the week.  Two drinks, plus I tried the new "snackin' bacon" offering at Dunkin Donuts.  It's a bag of bacon strips with a sweet pepper topping.

One month later, no weight lost. Holding at 122 with some PMS water gain (can feel the bloating). Still, February was an incredibly stressful month and I am fighting seasonal depression. I will count avoiding weight gain from emotional eating as a win.

Yes, business trips are hell on weight loss plans for the same reason.  I am happy if I don't gain weight.

OtherJen, what are you emotionally eating?  I found when I cut out grains and sugars, I stopped having the constant compulsion to snack.   It took a few weeks though.  At first, the urge to snack got overwhelming...I remember waking up one morning and literally leaping out of bed because I absolutely needed food NOW.  I've never in my life had a sensation like that, it was like a withdrawal syndrome.  Now, I'm in complete control.  Yet another huge win for low carb eating.

No, I meant that this time I was able to avoid emotional eating and thus avoid a several-lb weight gain. Having my weight remain stable through a high-stress month (and even with a weigh-in right before my period) is a major victory. I’ve eaten some things I wouldn’t normally eat anymore (e.g., chips, starchy gluten-free pizza, drinks with friends), but have been able to balance those with lots of salads, fish, poultry, and nuts. I rarely snack at night anymore; if I’m actually hungry (not just peckish) a few hours after dinner, I have a small spoonful of peanut butter and am fine for 12 hours or so until breakfast.

In contrast, last year, I had a major emotional shock in spring and put on about 10 lbs in a few months, mostly from potatoes, pasta, rice, and alcohol (I don’t have much of a sweet tooth).

Oh, got it.  Nicely done!

Not having a sweet tooth is a major advantage that I can't claim.  I do find though, that I miss crunchy, salty snacks on the low carb diet.  I tried making spiced roasted almonds at home once and that did help.

Another good snacky item:  Tiger nuts.   They're very chewy little tubers with a ton of fiber, and they taste a bit like coconut.  I get the raw unpeeled kind, on subscribe and save from Amazon.   You have to soak them for a day before eating.

Bit of a stall this week.  I made some rice and treated myself to more generous portions than last time.   I think maybe that's crossed my carb tolerance line, because otherwise I was pretty strict.  On the plus side, my size 10 pants are getting loose enough that I'm thinking I might need a size 8 - which is the size I used to be in my 30s.  Hoorah!  When I started, my size 12 patients were getting tight around the waist.

8/1/2019 - 161 lbs.  Started keto diet.
1/1/2020 - 138 lbs.  Started adding "safe starches" (potatoes and brown rice) in mid-January
2/2/2020 - 137.4

2/28/2020 - 134.8
3/8/2020 - 134.4
3/14/2020 - 134.4

The next 1-2 months should be a good opportunity to stick to the diet:  no business or personal travel, no restaurants, not much venturing out, and possibly mandated working from home (we find out more tonight).

I've been much better this last week about keeping my calories right around 2000/day, and it seems like it's working.  Keeping my carbs low(er) and having gum on hand is helping a lot with my snacking.

I do have to cut back on the exercise I've been doing - I just got a mole on my thigh with some mildly abnormal pathology removed, on the recommendation of the pathologist, so I'm not supposed to be putting much tension on the stitches for a while.  Probably no squatting for a week or two, or biking.  Good thing my gym is in my garage, though, so I can just bench for a while and not feel like people are judging me for skipping leg day :)

I'm a little bit stuck, at 142.  But considering the state of the world, the race cancellations, and being stuck at home with kids in the RAIN I'll take it.

I'm glad to finally see some movement in the right direction. I've been lifting weights, walking 3-5 miles a day, still watching my alcohol intake, just being mindful of what I am eating. Not counting calories at time but may if my weight loss stalls.

One month later, no weight lost. Holding at 122 with some PMS water gain (can feel the bloating). Still, February was an incredibly stressful month and I am fighting seasonal depression. I will count avoiding weight gain from emotional eating as a win.

Yesterday’s weigh-in: 120.5 lbs.

Apparently I’m not stress-eating as much as I expected. I’ve noticed the thought pattern, “Do you really need to eat that? You can’t just go to the store and buy more” creeping in when I eat, and I think it’s helped with portion control. Like, I bought potato chips yesterday but since I know they have to last for a while, I only ate a small handful.

I mean, I'm wearing leggings all day now.

I'm holding steady, which is really all I can ask for given the current environment. Goal is to work out every day of "shelter in place". I've been having wine more regularly, and baking. So, calories are up. Overall steps are down, despite working out daily

I’m at pretty much an all time low as an adult. I find it easy to control my food intake at home much more than in the office. Although I haven’t been lifting weights for a month so part of this is muscle loss. I’m doing a lot of cardio waking and running outside and videos online but have no weights here. I started using a water jug but it’s awkward. I also stopped drinking during the week for the sake of my mental health.

Count me in on the weight loss during quarantine crowd
Apr 4     241.6

Now I'm going to get more serious. Going to try to lose a pound or two per week for my health . . . at least get down under 200, although 185 is probably my healthiest weight.

Such great progress everybody!

I stalled during the lockdown, but I'm glad I checked the last record I left on this thread:

8/1/2019 - 161 lbs.  Started keto diet.
1/1/2020 - 138 lbs
2/2/2020 - 137.4
2/9/2020 - 136.6
2/16/2020 - 136.0
2/23/2020 - 136.0
2/28/2020 - 134.8
3/8/2020 - 134.4
3/14/2020 - 134.4
5/10/2020 - 132.0

I've been indulging in a little glass of wine at the end of the day, but otherwise staying low carb.  My biggest problem now is that I don't have any pants that fit!  Just sweat pants and a pair of jeans that I got a tailor to take in at the waist.  I hope the lockdown doesn't end before I have a chance to break out the sewing machine and figure out how to do my own tailoring.

Hanging in there at 152! I am definitely wearing my "warning" jeans every day. They have zero stretch and I absolutely cannot overeat when I wear them. When they get too tight I know it is time to watch myself. Because they have zero stretch it only takes a few pounds for me to feel it. It is the only thing keeping me from gaining right now.

Was killing it on the weight loss this year until the coronavirus lockdown began.

Started the weight loss December 12, 2019 at 232.8

dropped 22.6 lbs in 83 days to get to 210.2 on March 9th, 2020 in preparation for a Mexico beach vacation.  The vacation got cancelled the day we were about to leave and i didn't step back on a scale until May 4th.

A combo of social isolating at home and fastfood/ordering in over 2 months and in 56 days i put 15 lbs back on.

Anyways starting over again, the goal is back under 200.

5/16/2020 - 225.8

I have been trying to loose since January, goal was 120 from 134, mostly fasting and trying to cut out junk food. I am down to 125 last 2 weeks. I feel practice helps, and a two day fast 2 to 3 times a month and some 18 hour fasting days as well. I feel it took months to work up to the long fast.  Good luck everyone

I'm late to the party, but I'll join.

After someone linked Diet Doctor in another thread I've been motivated to try keto this summer. I don't eat meat that often but all the other foods in the plan I really like. This week I'm doing a "soft start", using up perishable non-keto foods and sticking to the diet plan apart from that. I can give up pasta, bread & co no problem. My biggest hurdle is staying away from sugar, especially in the form of chocolate. Maybe some accountability in this thread will help.

My aim is losing 2-3 kilos per month and 15 kilos until the end of the year.

08.06. - 80.1
12.06. - 79.5
15.06. - 80.2
20.06. - 78.4

Bit worried about the fluctuation, but overall I am moving in the right direction.

17.5. - 66.7
31.5. - 65.6
14.6. - 65.2
28.6. - 65.4

hm. stagnation?
gorged myself on bbq and cuba libre at a friends birthday celebration the day before, admittedly ;P

I lost 5kg since february. I also hit a plateau and solved it by adding 15 min of intense cardio per day, while drinking a bit less beer. My cardio was climbing stairs quickly (5 floors) and walking down kinda slowly, but it can be sprinting or a hiit youtube routine.

Joining this thread to hopefully add some more accountability.  I'm not sure what I was at the beginning of the year, but before quarantine I was 189.  In the first month of that, I went up to 202.  However, at the same time I started exercising more and actually lost 3 inches off my waist.  Since May I've been working to loose weight and keep exercising.  I've been tracking calories and working on not stress snacking.  I'm down to 192 today, and have lost another inch off my waist, taking my waist-to-hip ratio below 0.8 (I'm female).  I'm only 5'4", so I have a long way to go per BMI, but I'm encouraged that I'm moving in the right direction.

Ok, I didn't hit that goal.  But I am committed now to dropping weight.

Starting weight (Aug. 1) -- 209.1
Goal (by Dec. 31) -- 195

My goal is to drop one pound a week, which should get me there with a little bit of cushion.  If I hit the goal early, then I'll just maintain through year end.  If I don't, then I'll keep pressing.  I'd like to enjoy holiday treats, so it would be good to knock out a big push in the next few months and then ease off in the last five weeks of the year.

I'm starting by weighing every day and staying active each day.  I may start logging food again, which is time consuming but is what got me to really drop my weight before.  I'll check in here every week, even if just to report weight with no comments.

Goal (by Dec. 31) -- 195

Starting weight (Aug. 1) -- 209.1
Aug. 8 -- 206.1

So I think when I did my weigh in last week I was bloated that morning, so this first week's drop looks larger than I am sure it was in reality.  So I'll need to keep that in mind in future weeks if I have a smaller drop or stagnate.

Anyways, I'm proud of myself for starting this off well and that I was able to make progress without needing to laboriously track all my food.  I'll track if I need to, but it's a PITA so if I can make progress without it, all the better.

My success this week was purposefully going on some long walks and also portion control, esp. deserts, snacks and alcohol.

Not happy about that.  Not stress snacking has been harder.  I'm just starting to exercise more again, so hopefully that will help, since it has in the past.  I need to start tracking my food again.

Hello Group.. I am glad  I found this thread. I had joined the "Losing Weight in 2019" towards the end of last year but did not post regularly and did not manage to lose as much as I wanted. This year has been different though and would like to share my progress with all of you.

Some background : My highest weight was 254 Lbs around 2015. Since then I had managed to get it down to low 190 Lbs. Then it creeped back to high 190 Lbs last year. This year with the pandemic and with all the social distancing, I managed to control  and change my eating habits. This was pleasantly surprising and fairly easy. I think cooking at home and removing all the eating out helped a lot. I also added half hour of pushups, planks and other core strengthening exercise and made a point of taking at least 5000 steps everyday. My wife has been very supportive and willing participant in the walks and proper diet. She provided a huge boost in my effort. Started March with 204 Lbs and went down to 172 Lbs and again creeped up to 182 Lbs. There are momentary lapses but it just provides an additional motivation to do better since I have seen the weight go down.

I measure myself everyday in the morning to see my progress. My goal is to reach at least 154 Lbs and then I will decide if to reduce more or not. I will post here weekly. It is going to be fun.

August 16 : 176 Lbs

8/22/20-188

I'm below my pre-pandemic weight!  So happy about this.  I started exercising again and was doing much better about snacking.  I'm so glad that setback was just minor and not an upward trend.  Now I just need to keep on this path.

1/6: 236.4
...
8/20: 215.4

I hadn't noticed any major difference in my appearance, and no one else has mentioned any difference, either. However, I found a picture from December 2019, and my weight loss is pretty apparent when looking at that picture.

Mind if I join retroactively.

I started exercising 4-5 days a week around the beginning of the pandemic. Haven’t lost much weight but have added quite a bit of muscle.

2020 goal - 210 lbs

Mar 20 - 235 lbs
Aug 27 - 224 lbs

January Start: 156
Feb Start: 154

March 8: 152.6

So slow! Averaging about about a third of a pound per week.

March 27: 153

Am frankly thrilled that I am not gaining at this point. I feel myself wanting to stress eat more, and definitely between 10-Midnight when I'm doing catch up work and when I am doing school work with my kiddos!

151 this morning. Given how much less movement and sleep I am getting these days I'm pretty thrilled that I am not gaining. I do feel like I am constantly fighting hunger, but I also know that is because I am not getting enough shut eye. Once the world goes back to normal I hope it will be easier to stay on track.

152 - my world went back to semi-normal this week. Kids went back to school. Husband went back to work. All of the sudden I'm not in the kitchen getting them lunch and snacks three times a day. Between that and cutting out drinking except for Sunday Afternoon Cocktail Date w/ DH I'm hoping to see some downward motion again.

Am wearing my pants with absolutely no give several times a week. I feel like they are the only thing keeping me from gaining at this point.

Hey guys. I have a mustachioed friend who has been singing the praises of MyFitnessPal at me for a while now. I’m not someone who needs to lose a lot of weight, but for the past few months I feel like my running speed has been impeded by few excess KGs.

It’s been a little bit inspiring seeing some of the stories here!

Healthy weight range is 60-75 according to standard BMI tables and I started on Sunday with the app at 76. I also ate 2500 calories on Sunday (typical) and that made me cringe.

It’s Friday morning, and sticking to the plan of 1600 calories (+200 allowance for exercise) I’m down to 73.5. A loss of 2.5Kg in six days, and this is the lowest weight I’ve been since I was 18-19. I had been as high as 84kg in my early 20s (now 34)

Key takeouts:
- I’d been unknowingly having three servings of cereal for breakfast. It amazed me what a normal portion size should be. Extra cereal equals extra milk too so cutting it down by measuring one serve has really made an impact. I’ll aslo save a couple of hundred dollars a year from this because I no longer go through so much brekkie each week.
- I can still have a snack, but it’s a piece of fruit (apple, orange or pineapple slices)
- My daily hot chocolate (sobs) needed to be eliminated.
- You don’t get as much credit for exercise as you feel you should. It takes a long time to walk off the smallest “cheat” food... IMO everything simply comes down to CICO.
- Margarine, olive oil and sauces are the real killers. Whatever you use, cut these down as much as you can.
- A slice of bread is 100 calories. My standard lunch of two sandwiches is already 450 just for bread and margarine before I add any toppings (ham, lettuce, tomato etc). If you’re going to have this, then you’re going to have to trade off elsewhere.
- Weight loss happens at night. You basically breathe out your weight as you sleep as your body turns carbon atoms (in carbohydrates, protein and fat) plus oxygen into carbon dioxide. If your weight in the evening is within a couple of hundred grams of what it was in the morning then you’ll be lighter the next day.

Not all of this will apply to everyone, but for all of you here who have found what works for you keep at it and well done on your progress!

Come on, find that balance and turn it! Keep the active and layer in better diet. Don’t sacrifice one for the other, build the habit for both.

Good luck!

Joining late in the year, but I have been working on weight loss consistently since June 15th. Early in the year was a struggle, I had torn my ACL in September and I was not cleared to start running until late January. By then of course it was the middle of winter, so not much running happening. I consistently worked on eating clean until I could get back to running and did indoor workout videos to help strength train more. Was making slow progress and then Corona hit. Super stress with work and my kids at home all the time bouncing off the walls caused this Mama to start drinking more each night. Found myself drinking most evenings about 6 days a week and snacking along with drinking, bad combo. June 15th we moved to another state (we are a military family), I made the decision right then to cut out the daily drinking habit and as soon as our household goods arrived I started back to running. Been clean eating, no drinking and running regularly. It has taken me about 12 weeks to lose 4 lbs. At 44 this is the first time in my life it has been difficult to lose weight. I know this is hormonal, I am in the middle of perimenopause. But I am keeping at it, it may be slow, but it is progress, I mean at least I am not gaining anymore. Hoping to be down 10lbs by the end of the year, but we will see that maybe a tough goal to meet with how long it takes to lose each pound. But I will say my clothes are finally starting to fit better.

January 2020 - 128lbs.
June 2020 - 136lbs
August 2020 - 133.5lbs
September 23, 2020 - 132.2lbs

Ok it's sad to see those number. At this point in the year I weigh more than I started. But I will keep going.

Well, I dithered for a while because of Covid wallowing, but I met my 15 pound loss goal and am now going for five more. Feel and look much better, plus my clothes fit well again!

Joining this rather late in the year.  Also, I'm loving these Throw Down the Gauntlet threads.  So awesome to have this thread/community to keep me accountable.

My goal is to get below 120 by the end of the year; currently sitting at 128.  I haven't been below 120 in a couple of years (I miss my free personal trainer from a previous workplace).  This averages out to 3 pounds a month.  I think it will be quite a challenge, because I tend to overeat quite often, to the point where people comment on how much I can stuff down my gullet.  I will check back in at the beginning of November.

I’d also like to join this thread late in the year.

I have lost about 5 pounds since the beginning of the summer and would like to lose another 5 before the year is out. Given there are only about 2.5 months left in the year and the last few pounds are always the hardest, it’s a bit of a stretch goal!

I've not posted in a while because I haven't been motived since the beginning of February.  I've gotten remotivated this week, though because I'm on the verge of having to buy bigger clothes.  I'm still kind of surprised that I only gained a few pounds.  Maybe I can still end 2020 down a pound or two overall.  I would be quite happy with that for what has been a pretty bad year on so many fronts.

1/6/2020:  0 (start)
1/13/2020:  -3.0
1/20/2020:  -3.8
1/27/2020:  -5.8
2/11/2020:  -3.0
2/17/2020:  -5.6
2/17/2020:  -5.6
3/2/2020:  -4.4
4/6/2020:  -9
5/11/2020:  -6.4
5/18/2020:  -7.4
7/6/2020:  -8.2
8/3/2020:  -5.8
10/19/2020:  3

My goal is to get below 120 by the end of the year; currently sitting at 128.

10/6 - 128lbs
11/1 - 124lbs

Knowing myself, this will slow way down in the next couple of months.  I've been intermittent fasting.  I've done intermittent fasting before, but not as consistent as I have in the past month or so.  It's a lot easier to do during a pandemic, social events surrounding food has been next to nil.

Lost five more pounds since this last post, so twenty pounds off now and feeling great. Not only that, but I have become a daily, no-matter-what walker (have walked at least three miles every single day since July 1). I’m thrilled that my diet and exercise changes have now become habit. This is one bright spot in 2020.

Well, it's been an interesting year!  I got down to 88kg by the end of February then.... well... the world kind of fell apart, I moved from Norway back to Scotland, basically lived out of a suitcase, fell out of the MFP habit and crept back up to 92kg in July.  Since then though I've been walking 10km pretty much every day (sorry for all the metric measurements) and logging calories, and even playing a bit of five-a-side football ("soccer" to most of you) once that opened back up.  Currently 84.3kg - I have digital scales now hence the precision - and quite happy with that.  I'm guessing I'll shove a bit on over Xmas mostly as I'll not be working for 10 days, but I think I can maybe afford a bit of padding compared to January 2020!

Great to see so many people succeeding and sticking to it on this thread.  Keep at it!

01/07/20: 180.4 lbs
01/14/20: 181.8 lbs
01/21/20: 183.2 lbs
01/28/20: 183.2 lbs
02/04/20: 181.4 lbs
02/11/20: 181.0 lbs
06/16/20: 187.8 lbs (peak weight)
08/25/20: 185.2 lbs (start of roadtrip)
09/29/20: 175.8 lbs (end of roadtrip)
12/22/20: 172.2 lbs (lowest weight of the year)

Haven't posted weights since February but I keep track of them in a spreadsheet. Beginning of the year went the wrong way but I did a 30 day roadtrip in September that helped me drop weight(alot of hiking).

I am now down 26 lbs in the last 5 months. 4 years ago I lost 17 and kept it off so a total of 43. I feel so much better!
