31. Four Hundred Souls by Ibram X. Kendi and Keisha N. Blane (eds.). A collection of essays on the history of African America from 1619-2019. Each essay covers an aspect of a 5-year period of history, which was a really interesting way to structure the book. Highly recommended.

32. Slow by Brooke McAlary. Pretty good but nothing really novel.

53. Sex Robots and Vegan Meat: Adventures at the Frontier of Birth, Food, Sex and Death, by Jenny Kleeman (Sep 15). I really enjoyed reading about these developing technologies and considering the implications of them.  However, I was bothered by the extent to which the author inserted herself into the story (including judgmental comments on her interviewees' appearance).

54. Tecumseh and the Prophet: The Shawnee Brothers Who Defied a Nation, by Peter Cozzens (Sep 15) (audio). Super well-researched and impressive.  Though I have to admit, given my paucity of knowledge on this topic, this book was too deep a dive for me.

55. The Buddha in the Attic, by Julie Otsuka (Sep 15). This story hit close to home. I thought the use of the first person plural depersonalized everything too much, though it had its advantages/uses as well.

Finished:

1.  Farmer Boy, by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  Listened to the audiobook with the kids on our Christmas trip to my parents.  Hearing the chores for those kids makes me think I should expect more from mine around the house!
2.  Jubal Sackett, by Louis L'Amour.  Nice change of pace from his normal formula.  The conjuring of fire to pull one over on his wife seemed...cheap.
3.  Last of the Breed, by Louis L'Amour.  Enjoyed, probably the fourth or fifth time I've read.
4.  The Eagle of the Ninth, by Rosemary Sutcliffe.  Took me a bit to get used to all the Roman terminology.  I think I'll have to watch the movie now to bemoan how it doesn't follow the book.
5.  The Silver Branch, by Rosemary Sutcliffe.  Probably my favorite of the trilogy.
6.  The Lantern Bearers, by Rosemary Sutcliffe.
7.  Comstock Lode, by Louis L'Amour.  Good epic tale to be bedridden with while awaiting COVID results.
8.  The Haunted Mesa, by Louis L'Amour.  Western Tough Guy + Sci Fi (parallel world that explains Anasazi disappearance)
9.  Atomic Habits, by James Clear.  Now to try some of his suggestions!
10. Galloway, by Louis L'Amour.
11. The Bible New Testament, The Message translation, by various authors.
12. The Lonesome Gods, by Louis L'Amour.
13. Hondo, by Louis L'Amour.
14. The White, by Deborah Larsen.  Fictional re-telling of the capture and life of Mary Jemison.  Read it at 3AM, interesting enough to keep me awake.
15. Fool Me Twice, by Jeff Lindsay.  Amusing throughout, but seemed to be striving to become the next blockbuster action thriller.
16. Hunting Open-Country Mule Deer, by Dwight Schuh.
17. The Waters of Andros, by Madsen Pirie
18. Dark Visitor, by Madsen Pirie
19. Stormbreaker, by Anthony Horowitz.  My 13 yo was gifted the Alex Rider series so I read the first one to check it out.
20. Yesterday's Tomorrow, by Noah Walton.  Captivating, very well-written. @nippycrisp
21. The Magic Bullet, by Noah Walton.  Awesome combination of the scientific process in America today and a gritty crime story. @nippycrisp

I've begun to resign myself to just not reading it.

I mean, I knew I was going to read it. RPO is one of my favorite books. I'm not overly concerned with the overall plot line - odd - or likeability of the characters - I never disliked Wade in the first one but man I couldn't stand him in this one - or any of that. What got me was it was still all about the references, and they were so stinking contrived and obscure. The first one, a normal person who geeked out about the 80's knew some stuff. This time, I was lost 90% of the time, and it seemed like his references were even more detailed than before. In the first book, I caught the last movie reference before the part of the scene came up about the clapping of the coconuts. For this one, I found myself zoning him out (on audiobook) for minutes at a time when he described some obscure reference that I neither knew about nor that excited me in any way.

I was sad.

Quote from: Zhiantara
1. The House of Islam: a global history, Ed Husain. Really good overview of the history, basic tenets, strengths and problems of Islam, written by a devout believer.
2. Quiet: the power of introverts in a world that can't stop talking, Susan Cain. I read this whenever I need reminding that introversion is not a personal failing. Soooo good.
3. No Friend but the Mountains, Behrouz Boochani. The experiences of an asylum seeker detained on Manus Island. Hard to put down because it is excellent, hard to pick up again because it is not a feel-good read.
4. The explosive child, Dr. Ross Greene. Why standard behaviour management techniques don't work for kids with challenging behaviours and how to partner with them to change things and make life better for everyone.
5. Welcoming food: Diet as medicine for home cooks and other healers. Book 1: Energetics of food and healing. Andrew Sterman. The Chinese medicine approach to food but through a western lens.
6. Welcoming food: Diet as medicine for home cooks and other healers. Book 2: Recipes and kitchen practice. Andrew Sterman. Tried a few ideas and seems to be helping with my reflux.
7. Star Trek: The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway, Una McCormack. A novel written as an autobiography, mostly just rehashing ST Voyager.
8. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll
9. Through the Looking Glass, Lewis Carroll
10. The Tennant of Wildfell Hall, Anne Bronte. Really good portrayal of what we would now call coercive control/domestic abuse, with a happy ending. Really enjoyed it.
11. Hillbilly Elegy, JD Vance.

12. The Power of Habit: Why we do what we do and how to change, Charles Duhigg.

20. The Secret History, Diana Tartt (library). Holy mother of pearl this book is DAMN good. Whoa. Highly highly recommended.

Currently reading:
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, Cleanness, Patience, trans. JJ Anderson and AJ Cawley (pre-2021, own)
The Night Circus, Erin Morgenstern (pre-2021, own)
The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, Howard Pyle (library)

Goals:

20/52 books read overall
7/15 books I already owned pre-2021
1/6 natural history books

33. Random Family by Adrian Nicole LeBlanc. Parts of this were tedious and depressing, but overall I still really liked it.

34. Anxious People by Fredrick Backman. I loved this book so much I immediately put another one by the same author on hold. Sad, funny, and hopeful all at the same time.

35. How to be a Conscious Eater by Sophie Egan. I was a little disappointed by this one - I was hoping for more in-depth analysis than what this contained.

57. The Silence of the Girls, by Pat Barker (Sept 24).

58. The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz, by Erik Larson (Oct 1) (audio).  Engaging deep dive, written like it's a novel but thoroughly researched. It really drove home to me how hard it must have been to live (and sacrifice) through that and how little faith I have that we all could do the same in our modern times if needed.  Good reader on the audiobook, though I found it hilarious that most of his American characters sounded like John Wayne.

59. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, by V. E. Schwab (Oct 1). I really enjoyed this read (except for the author's overuse of one word that kept tripping me up).  I think it was a bit predictable in the end, but the journey made it more than worth it.  This book is "of a type" (or types) that I feel like I've read a number of recently, e.g. #44, and I thought this was a notch above the rest.  I wish I had a book club that would read this so I could discuss some of the ideas in it!

I blew right on past 360 while on a mostly off-grid vacation, so here are my next 20, favourites marked:

241. The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon - Alexander McCall SMith
242. How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire - Kerrelyn Sparks (not the finest literature ever written, but an absolutely hilarious story centered around a vampire who loses a fang biting into a sex doll, and needs to convince a dentist to put it back.)

243. Rosemarked - Livia Blackburne
244. Umbertouched - Livia Blackburne
A really good plague-focused fantasy duology with a super interesting and well-done memory-wiping plotline.

245. Velvet Was the Night - Silvia Moreno-Garcia
246. Malice - Heather Walter
247. Feel the Heat - Kathryn Shay

248. The Hidden Palace - Helene Wecker
Part two of The Golem and the Jinni, and it is also really good. Does a deeper dive into the jinn side of things, versus book 1 that was more golem focused.

249. Fledgling - Octavia Butler
250. If I Stay - Gayle Forman
251. The Sweetest Spell - Suzanne Selfors

252. Project Hail Mary - Andy Weir
Holy hell was this ever good. A scientist is shipped off into deep space in search of a solution to a big problem for humanity, and makes a new friend along the way. I really liked the mix of humor, science, and solid character development.

253. Klara and the Sun - Kazuo Ishiguro
254. Everneath - Brodi Ashton

255. Alif the Unseen - G. Willow Wilson
A fantastic magical realism book set in the middle east following a hacker who gets himself into deep shit, and the fallout from that. Lots pf humor, interesting religious discussions, and great characters.

256. The Bird King - G. Willow WIlson
257. Mage-Commander - Glynn Stewart

258. Mind of my Mind - Octavia Butler
259. Adulthood Rites - Octavia Butler
260. Imago - Octavia Butler
Finished off the rest of these two series. Just really great, solid science fiction.

29. The Face On The Milk Carton, Caroline Cooney
30. Find Me, Anne Frasier
31. Tell Me, Anne Frasier
32. The Forgotten Garden, Kate Morton
33. A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens

Sigh...it was terrible, wasn't it...

I was sad.

DH and I listened together, and I don't think I would have made it all the way through if it was just me. The pacing of the story was awful. Half of the book was spent over describing the characters' actions and pop culture references with minimal plot advancement. Then you get to the end where 5 minutes of "actual time" is 6 chapters filled with actions that would take hours in real life. The book could have used a much better editor.

59. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, by V. E. Schwab (Oct 1).

60. Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven, by Susan Jane Gilman (Oct 5).  I thought this was going to be a typical travel memoir.  Bill Bryson via two ditzy American girls.  And there was some of that, and it was still interesting....but then it took a very surprising turn that had me flipping pages and reading like mad to see what happened.

61. The House in the Cerulean Sea, by T.J. Klune (Oct 6) (audio). Apparently there's disagreement on whether this is adult fiction or YA, but it felt more like for 8-9 years old to me.  Quite didactic, predictable and saccharine, but if I were a parent I'm sure I'd be shoving this into my 3rd grader's hands.

New list time!

54. The King's Witch by Tracey Borman - Stewart Era hist-fic. Totally fine, but nothing major

55. The Devil's Slave by Tracey Borman - sequel to the above, will probably read the third when it comes out, mostly because i'm fairly unfamiliar with the time period from a histfic perspective so I'm not sure where a third book could go.

56. The House of Brides by Jane Cockram. Decent contemporary British/Australian Gothic. I enjoy the genre but don't know that I've been wowed by many attempts at contemporary Gothics (other than Sing, Unburied, Sing which was perfect New Southern Gothic). If anyone has any recommendations - hit me!

57. Someone Who Will Love You in All Your Damaged Glory: Stories by Raphael Bob-Waksburg. Fun! Very delightful, oddball takes on trite subjects that make them fast and fun.

58. Angry Housewives Eating BonBons by Lorna Landviik  - Yaya Sisterhood but set in Minnesota w/ way less psychological damage (on nsecond thought- there are damaged characters but they aren't as compelling is Vivi in Yaya Sisterhood).

59. Lost Art of Doing Nothing by Maartje Willems & Lona Aalders - Scandinavians hold the secret to perfect life sort of book. Short, easy read but wouldn't necessarily recommend.

60. The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. This is the first Atwood that I've really enjoyed! It was short, and interesting. The Odyssey from Penelope's perspective.

61-63. Bridgerton Books 2-4 by Julia Quinn  I get why they are such a thing! They are charming. I'm going to take a break before reading the rest of them because the author's ticks are getting to me. I'm tired of men "practically growling" and the phrase "ground out" to refer to something that a lady says through gritted teeth. But really, they are light, sexy, fun, and the characters are likeable but imperfect in realistic ways. Good Regencies!

13. Grit: Why passion and resilience are the secrets to success, Angela Duckworth

36. The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman. I was pretty familiar with the "love language" concept but still thought the book was a worthwhile read.

37. The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis. Pure coincidence that the title is so similar to the previous book haha. It was interesting.

38. A Hologram for the King by Dave Eggers. I loved A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius so was curious about Eggers' other books. This was...not similar at all. It was okay but I didn't love it.

64. The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova (Oct 14). Reminiscent of the Da Vinci Code with a Dracula focus. But I think it was a bit too much of "that" at times.  Should have kept it well below 700 pages.  But enjoyed it overall.

Next 20, favourites marked:

361. Where She Went - Gayle Forman
362. Everbound - Brodi Ashton

363. The Caves of Steel - Isaac Asimov
I really enjoyed this classic science fiction murder mystery involving a human cop and his robot partner. The next ones in the series just came in at the library and I can't wait.

364. Prodigy - Marie Lu
365. The False Princess - Eilis O'Neal

366. House of Hollow - Krystal Sutherland
367. The Midnight Bargain - C.L. Polk
368. The Sisters of the Winter Wood - Rena Rossner
369. All the Murmuring Bones - A.G. Slatter
370. The Wolf in the Whale - Jordanna Brodsky
I really lucked out on this batch of solid stand-alone fantasy novels, mostly nice and spooky for fall (especially House of Hollow).

371. Evertrue - Brodi Ashton
372. The Lights of Sugarberry Cove - Heather Webber
373. True Grit - Charles Portis

374. The Importance of Being Earnest - Oscar Wilde
I don't normally read plays, but this was so incredibly witty and laugh-out-loud hilarious that I loved it.

375. The Goose Girl - Shannon Hale
376. The Prison Healer - Lynette Noni
377. The Wolf and the Woodsman - Ava Reid
378. Crown Duel - Sherwood Smith
379. The Secret Lives of Church Ladies - Deesha Philyaw

380. The Lost Apothecary - Sarah Penner
A great dual timeline story following the story of an apothecary in the 1700s who helped women poison their abusive husbands, and a modern-day woman blindsided by her husband's infidelity.

65.  The Last Season, by Eric Blehm (Oct 19). Deeply engrossing probably because I am so fond of the setting.  I read much of the book with my map of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks open next to me, with memories of my own adventures near where the search for the missing ranger took place.

66.  The Parable of the Sower, by Octavia Butler (Oct 20) ([mostly] audio).  Didn't love it as much as Dawn (or Kindred) but will keep reading the trilogy.  This (unlike #45) doesn't really feel like it stands on its own.
