39. Holy the Firm by Annie Dillard. A short but really powerful book. I wasn't familiar with Annie Dillard but now I want to read all her books.

40. Beartown by Fredrik Backman

New list time!

54. The King's Witch by Tracey Borman
55. The Devil's Slave by Tracey Borman
56. The House of Brides by Jane Cockram
57. Someone Who Will Love You in All Your Damaged Glory: Stories by Raphael Bob-Waksburg.
58. Angry Housewives Eating BonBons by Lorna Landviik
59. Lost Art of Doing Nothing by Maartje Willems & Lona Aalders
60. The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood.
61-63. Bridgerton Books 2-4 by Julia Quinn

64. The Safe Place by Anna Downes - Modern Brit Gothic, leans into the "British Woman in Peril" genre, but definitely more about the setting. solid B-

65. Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid - very enjoyable, took me a bit to get into the structure (transcript of a music documentary) but was effective for the subject.

66. The Lost Apothecary by Sarah P . .mer (can't read my own scribble on her last name) - good, felt fast and a little short to me. But v. effective dual timeline.

67. Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Creado-Perez - whoo boy, even knowing a lot of the factoids in this book left me unprepared for the anger and upset that built as each topic was stacked upon the previous one.  All people should read this.

68. A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes - another Homer retelling from the perspective of the women. Good but not Circe or The Penelopiad (But I liked it better than Achilles or Silence of the Girls).

69. No One is Talking About This by Patricia Lockwood - I'm not sure what I think of this yet. It was a finalist for the Booker Prize and it is most definitely well written. I found it both ugly and hopeful and uncomfortable to read. I wouldn't say I enjoyed it - but it was excellent. I read a description of it as Ulysses for the internet age and that is a good description of what it felt like to read it (but much shorter!), if you want to know what you'd be getting into :)

70. People of Abandoned Character by Clare Whitfield. Jack the Ripper Histfic with a female protagonist who is a nurse. Not bad!

67.5. The Office of Historical Corrections, by Danielle Evans (Oct 26) (audio) (re-read).

68. No One Goes Alone, by Erik Larson (Oct 29) (audio). An audio-only release (because, as the author says, ghost stories are best told aloud). Was actually creepy in a couple parts.  I would say 3.5 stars.

October:

62) In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren (audio) - ★★½
63) If the Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy (audio) - ★★★
64) The Orphan Collector by Ellen Marie Wiseman (audio) - ★★★

65) The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot by Marianne Cronin (kindle) - ★★★½
66) Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell (audio) - ★★½
67) Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (audio) - This might be a record for fastest reread, but I listened to the audiobook with my husband. He is not a reader, but we usually listen to one or two audio books together when driving. He loved this book. I think he is experiencing his first book hangover.

Finished:

1.  Farmer Boy, by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  Listened to the audiobook with the kids on our Christmas trip to my parents.  Hearing the chores for those kids makes me think I should expect more from mine around the house!
2.  Jubal Sackett, by Louis L'Amour.  Nice change of pace from his normal formula.  The conjuring of fire to pull one over on his wife seemed...cheap.
3.  Last of the Breed, by Louis L'Amour.  Enjoyed, probably the fourth or fifth time I've read.
4.  The Eagle of the Ninth, by Rosemary Sutcliffe.  Took me a bit to get used to all the Roman terminology.  I think I'll have to watch the movie now to bemoan how it doesn't follow the book.
5.  The Silver Branch, by Rosemary Sutcliffe.  Probably my favorite of the trilogy.
6.  The Lantern Bearers, by Rosemary Sutcliffe.
7.  Comstock Lode, by Louis L'Amour.  Good epic tale to be bedridden with while awaiting COVID results.
8.  The Haunted Mesa, by Louis L'Amour.  Western Tough Guy + Sci Fi (parallel world that explains Anasazi disappearance)
9.  Atomic Habits, by James Clear.  Now to try some of his suggestions!
10. Galloway, by Louis L'Amour.
11. The Bible New Testament, The Message translation, by various authors.
12. The Lonesome Gods, by Louis L'Amour.
13. Hondo, by Louis L'Amour.
14. The White, by Deborah Larsen.  Fictional re-telling of the capture and life of Mary Jemison.  Read it at 3AM, interesting enough to keep me awake.
15. Fool Me Twice, by Jeff Lindsay.  Amusing throughout, but seemed to be striving to become the next blockbuster action thriller.
16. Hunting Open-Country Mule Deer, by Dwight Schuh.
17. The Waters of Andros, by Madsen Pirie
18. Dark Visitor, by Madsen Pirie
19. Stormbreaker, by Anthony Horowitz.  My 13 yo was gifted the Alex Rider series so I read the first one to check it out.
20. Yesterday's Tomorrow, by Noah Walton.  Captivating, very well-written. @nippycrisp
21. The Magic Bullet, by Noah Walton.  Awesome combination of the scientific process in America today and a gritty crime story. @nippycrisp
22. The Cold Dish, by Craig Johnson.
23. Another Man's Moccasins, by Craig Johnson.
24. Junkyard Dogs, by Craig Johnson.
25. As the Crow Flies, by Craig Johnson.

November 1st, and I'm only halfway there!  I'm also seeing a pattern in my reading.

Next 20, up to 400 now, and here we gooooo:

381. The Naked Sun - Isaac Asimov
382. The Robots of Dawn - Isaac Asimov
383. The Rest of the Robots - Isaac Asimov
384. Robots and Empire - Isaac Asimov
385. The Stars, Like Dust - Isaac Asimov
386. The Currents of Space - Isaac Asimov
Working my way through the Foundation universe and loving it. Fantastic classic science fiction.

387. An Ideal Husband - Oscar Wilde
388. Court Duel - Sherwood Smith
389. She Who Became the Sun - Shelley Parker-Chan
390. The Last Flight - Julie Clark
391. The Girl in the Steel Corset - Kady Cross

392. Kingdom of the Cursed - Kerri Maniscalco
Book two in a fantastic Italian/underworld medieval fantasy series. Love all the food details in particular.

393. Instructions for Dancing - Nicola Yoon
394. Sorrowland - Rivers Solomon

395. The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires - Grady Hendrix
SUCH a good horror novel centered around a vampire moving to a small town, and the book club that gets to deal with it.

396. Briarheart - Mercedes Lackey

397. Once Upon a Broken Heart - Stephanie Garber
Book four in the Caraval universe, and just a really fun and enjoyable start to a new fantasy trilogy.

398. Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures - Merlin Sheldrake
399. My Sister, the Serial Killer - Oyinkan Braithwaite

400. The Jasmine Throne - Tasha Suri
A really good adult fantasy with lots of great characters, plotting, politics, backstabbing, and general dynamics.

72.  The Only Good Indians, by Stephen Graham Jones (Nov 5) (audio). Another great horror novel!  Written by and about Native Americans, it had a unique setting and voice (both figuratively and literally, as the narrator is Blackfeet, as are the protagonists).

72.  The Only Good Indians, by Stephen Graham Jones (Nov 5) (audio). Another great horror novel!  Written by and about Native Americans, it had a unique setting and voice (both figuratively and literally, as the narrator is Blackfeet, as are the protagonists).

I have both this and My Heart is a Chainsaw on my hold list at the library - I love when I see thumbs up of things I want to read!

Re: 50 Books in 2021!
« Reply #522 on: November 10, 2021, 07:23:46 AM »

Finished:

26. A Serpent's Tooth, by Craig Johnson.
27. Any Other Name, by Craig Johnson.
28. Dry Bones, by Craig Johnson.
29. Brian's Return, by Gary Paulsen.
30. Brian's Hunt, by Gary Paulsen.
31. Point Blanc, by Anthony Horowitz.
32. An Obvious Fact, by Craig Johnson.

82) The Forged Coupon, (fiction) Leo Tolstoy
83) The Book of Delights, essays, Ross Gay *bookclub, I loved this book but most people in my book club did not. A year of reflecting on delight..he is a poet and a Black man in the US so there are many interestingly worded reflections on racism and other hard subjects.
84) Women Talking (fiction), Miriam Toews..compelling and unusual story..simple and complex at the same time
85) Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest, Suzanne Simard —been waiting to read her story, frustrating because her research and insights were disregarded for so long but glad she is now having her moment..

72.  The Only Good Indians, by Stephen Graham Jones (Nov 5) (audio).

73.  Bird Box, by Josh Malerman (Nov 9) (audio).  YES!  A creepy November winner.  Sometimes the tension built almost too slowly and my attention ended up drifting a bit, but otherwise super well done post-apocalytpic suspense novel.  I have not seen the Sandra Bullock movie made of it.

74.  Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals, by Alexis Pauline Gumbs (Nov 10). I admire the unique format and work, but the poetic and meditation-piece style of it wasn't ultimately my thing.

1. The House of Islam: a global history, Ed Husain. Really good overview of the history, basic tenets, strengths and problems of Islam, written by a devout believer.
2. Quiet: the power of introverts in a world that can't stop talking, Susan Cain. I read this whenever I need reminding that introversion is not a personal failing. Soooo good.
3. No Friend but the Mountains, Behrouz Boochani. The experiences of an asylum seeker detained on Manus Island. Hard to put down because it is excellent, hard to pick up again because it is not a feel-good read.
4. The explosive child, Dr. Ross Greene. Why standard behaviour management techniques don't work for kids with challenging behaviours and how to partner with them to change things and make life better for everyone.
5. Welcoming food: Diet as medicine for home cooks and other healers. Book 1: Energetics of food and healing. Andrew Sterman. The Chinese medicine approach to food but through a western lens.
6. Welcoming food: Diet as medicine for home cooks and other healers. Book 2: Recipes and kitchen practice. Andrew Sterman. Tried a few ideas and seems to be helping with my reflux.
7. Star Trek: The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway, Una McCormack. A novel written as an autobiography, mostly just rehashing ST Voyager.
8. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll
9. Through the Looking Glass, Lewis Carroll
10. The Tennant of Wildfell Hall, Anne Bronte. Really good portrayal of what we would now call coercive control/domestic abuse, with a happy ending. Really enjoyed it.
11. Hillbilly Elegy, JD Vance.
12. The Power of Habit: Why we do what we do and how to change, Charles Duhigg.
13. Grit: Why passion and resilience are the secrets to success, Angela Duckworth

14. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, Gail Honeyman

DNF: The Art of Happiness, the Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler - was so boring I had to read each page 5 or 6 times to remember what it said.  Life is too short.

41. Normal People by Sally Rooney. This was an audiobook and I didn't really like the book - I mostly only finished it because I loved the narrator's voice lol.

42. The Secret Wisdom of Nature by Peter Wohlleben.

43. The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. Really powerful but extremely sad.

The book Normal People is also a TV serie. A pretty good one in my opinion, but with disturbing content, like people who seem selfdestructive and make seemingly wrong choices. I tried the book at well, but got so reminded of the TV serie that I couldn't read it.

Finished:

33. The Western Star, by Craig Johnson.
34. Depth of Winter, by Craig Johnson.
35. Land of Wolves, by Craig Johnson.

Thanks - I hadn't heard of the show but I looked it up, and it looks like it sticks to the book really closely.

418. An American Marriage - Tayari Jones
419. The Shadows Between Us - Tricia Levenseller

420. Emperor Mollusk Versus the Sinister Brain - A.Lee Martinez
A hilariously bad evil genius/mad scientist mollusk took over the world and then decided to retire, but it didn't go as planned. This one shot straight to my all-time favourites list.

64. The Safe Place by Anna Downes
65. Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
66. The Lost Apothecaryby Sarah P . .mer (can't read my own scribble on her last name)
67. Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Creado-Perez
68. A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes
69. No One is Talking About This by Patricia Lockwood
70. People of Abandoned Character by Clare Whitfield

71. Battle Royal by Lucy Parker - Romance that is 100% Great British Baking Show/Paul Hollywood Fan Fic and I was sort of here for it?

72. The Carrow Haunt by Darcy Coates  . . .straight up ghost story with some "and then there were none" style shenanigans, some spooky moments

73. Forgotten In Death by JD Robb . . .  sunk cost fallacy here, I really need to stop reading these

74. Survive the Night by Riley Sager . . . Fun! Not amazing, but fun and I will check out their big best seller (Final Girls).

75. A Low Country Bride by Preslaysa Williams . . sweet romance set in the wedding industry and AME Church community in Charleston.

And I've been reading some books with my son so that he can have someone to discuss them with. He has to read 30 books for school this year, which sort of seems like a lot to me. But he is much more enthusiastic  about reading them if we discuss them together.

76. The Player King by Avi . .  I loved Avi books when I was in elementary school and this one about a pretender to Henry VII's throne was really good. I am so impressed by how Avi manages to put so much age appropriate history and emotional shading into a 150 page kids book.

77. The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin . . . I adored this book as a child and was glad that my son loved it as well. Agatha Christie light for pre-teens. But it doesn't really work anymore. One of the major clues is a song that I learned in elementary school, and my son didn't - so I had to lay it out for him.

78. Sal and Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez . . . This a Rick Riordan presents book and I have loved reading them with my son. They are truly wonderful! Sci-Fi fantasy set in a performing arts middle school, characters are almost all of Cuban heritage.

79. The Last Musketeer by Stuart Gibbs. This was my son's recent favorite. A fun time-travel take on the musketeers that keeps all the characters in play, but makes them teenage pre-musketeers.
