recent reads
14) Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows (fiction), Balli Kaur Jaswal *bookclub--this book seemed like it might be interesting, the idea was there but the writing didn't do it for me :)

15) Mountains of the Mind, Robert Macfarlane (audiobook)..I'm afraid I'll have to relisten. I listen while walking and somehow have been finding myself totally lost in thought, not the book

16) Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants, Robin Wall Kimmerer--read 3/4 of this book when it first came out in '15, having another try at it and enjoying it quite a bit so far

21. Edinburgh Twilight--Victorian murder mystery/police procedural. Recommended by someone here and I enjoyed it. The first in a series so I'm looking for #2.
22. Quiet, The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking
23. The Fall of the House of Cabal- #5 in the series

Currently reading: The Splendid and The Vile, about Churchill's first year as PM during WWII.
(Found out the Germans broke through the Maginot Line *four days* after he took office!)
I kept putting off reading it because I've been leaning into fluff fiction lately and have had a hard time focusing on non-fiction narratives. I'm only a few chapters in but it's intriguing so far.

1. On Writing by Stephen King
2. Red at the Bone by Jaqueline Woodson (I will need to reread the end of this one again. I was getting sleepy as I finished and I think I need to soak in more of the beautiful writing.)
3. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
4. House of Trelawney by Hannah Rothschild
5. Race and Reunion by David W. Blight (a book about how the US handled Reconstruction and how that narrative still effects things today. A bit dense but very glad I read it)
6. The Choice by Dr. Edith Eva Eger

7. Differently Wired: Raising an Exceptional Child in a Conventional World by Deborah Reber
8. The City We Became by M.K. Jemison
9. Can't Even: How Millenials Became the Burnout Generation by Anne Hellen Petersen (Good but depressing?)
10. First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen
11. From Burnout to Breakthrough by Eileen McDargh
12. You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey by Amber Ruffin and Lacey Lamar (delightful! Amber Ruffin is one of my favorite comedians and her ability to approach a serious topic with humor was a balm I did not know I needed until I read it).

The author took an 11 year break between book 3 and 4, so I guess I picked a good time to discover the series.

Good luck!  Much as I love the guy, he's written some behemoths.  Are you including/have you read Wheel of Time?

@Raenia I have already read the Stormlight Archive books, so that helps a bit.  I am not including the Wheel of Time, but may tackle that series after I finish the rest of Sanderson's books.  That series may require a year all to itself.

I just started a new job this year with a 2.5 hr round trip commute, 5 days a week (and I work 10 hr days). Sucks, but my wife’s corolla gets 40 mpg and I’ve been enjoying knocking out all these audiobooks. I did just sign a lease for a new home today, 20 minutes from work. I’ll still have the commute for 6 weeks, knocking out as many books as I can!

1. Wherever You Go, There you Are - Jon Kabat-Zinn
2. Digital Minimalism - Cal Newport (3rd book by him, very good author)
3. The Sixth Extinction - Elizabeth Kolbert
4. Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff, and It’s All Small Stuff - Richard Carlson
5. Talk Like TED - Carmine Gallo
6. Steal the Show - Michael Port
7. Ikigai - Hector Garcia, Francesc Miralles
8. As a Man Thinketh - James Allen
9. Do You Talk Funny? - David Nihill
10. Siddhartha - Herman Hesse
11. The Power of Now - Eckhart Tolle
12. The Alchemist - Paulo Cohelo
13. Think Again - Adam Grant

Finished 12 and 13. The alchemist was a great story. Similar to Siddhartha. Think Again was alright. Not sure it was as groundbreaking as some other books on self improvement I’ve read.

Due to some recent work challenges, I’ve put a couple other books on hold and I’m re-listening to, “Crucial Conversations.”

I have a few similar books I may reread this year as well.

I'm trying for 52 this year.  Maybe read 10 last year.  This thread will keep me motivated!  I mostly read books but I sometimes listen to audiobooks while I do chores or walk outdoors.  (A)= audiobook.

1. The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin
2. The Minimalist Home by Joshua Becker
3. Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult (A)
4. Shortest Way Home by Pete Buttigieg
5. My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite (A)
6. The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion
7. Whiskey in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon (A)

Right now I'm reading Educated by Tara Westover, Becoming Minimalist by Joshua Becker, and listening to Switch by Chip & Dan Heath.

I'll try to update monthly.  Nearly all the books I read or listen to I borrow from the library.  I LOVE libraries.

If anyone's interested in the same type of books as I've been posting, other than new releases from authors I already follow, this year I'm mostly working my way through this list:

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1023.Best_Strong_Female_Fantasy_Novels?page=1

So far the only series from that list that's been a "nope" for me was Vampire Academy - the rest have been good.

If you click the "Listopia" at the top, you'll get a lot of other reading lists for other types of books as well. Just thought I'd give a heads up for anyone not familiar with that feature of Goodreads.

Finished:

1.  Farmer Boy, by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  Listened to the audiobook with the kids on our Christmas trip to my parents.  Hearing the chores for those kids makes me think I should expect more from mine around the house!
2.  Jubal Sackett, by Louis L'Amour.  Nice change of pace from his normal formula.  The conjuring of fire to pull one over on his wife seemed...cheap.
3.  Last of the Breed, by Louis L'Amour.  Enjoyed, probably the fourth or fifth time I've read.
4.  The Eagle of the Ninth, by Rosemary Sutcliffe.  Took me a bit to get used to all the Roman terminology.  I think I'll have to watch the movie now to bemoan how it doesn't follow the book.
5.  The Silver Branch, by Rosemary Sutcliffe.  Probably my favorite of the trilogy.
6.  The Lantern Bearers, by Rosemary Sutcliffe.
7.  Comstock Lode, by Louis L'Amour.  Good epic tale to be bedridden with while awaiting COVID results.
8.  The Haunted Mesa, by Louis L'Amour.  Western Tough Guy + Sci Fi (parallel world that explains Anasazi disappearance)
9.  Atomic Habits, by James Clear.  Now to try some of his suggestions!

7. The Late Bloomer's Club by Louise Miller
8. The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden by Jonas Jonasson
9. The Enigma Game by Elizabeth Wein
10. Front Desk by Kelly Yang
11. With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

12. The Blue Zones Solution by Dan Buettner

working on/recently finished
17) 1984, George Orwell (audiobook)...I don't know why but I have never read this before..really enjoying although it's disturbing in so many ways

18) The Making of a Story: A Norton Guide to Creative Writing, Alice Laplante--a workshop-style book but was recommended for writers and since I dabble thought it might be a good idea to brush up on things. Working through it bit-by-bit.

19) The Road to Character, David Brooks

2. A Promised Land, by Barack Obama (Jan 5) (audio).
3. King Leopold's Ghost, by Adam Hochschild (Jan 17).
4. Every Heart a Doorway, by Seanan McGuire (Jan 18).
5. Plain Bad Heroines, by Emily M. Danforth (Jan 21) (audio).

7. The Guest List, by Lucy Foley (Jan 29) (audio).
8. A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle (Feb 2).
9. The Tyranny of Merit: What’s Become of the Common Good?, by Michael J. Sandel (Feb 10) (audio).

10. The Forgotten Garden, by Kate Morton (Feb 27).  I had to take a break from another book to read this one, which is just as long, but is more of a page turner.  Have to admire the author for the pacing, especially, of this book.  Feels like it would be a huge challenge to lay a book out like this and dole out questions and answers in the right order and at the right times to make it seems so complex and mysterious.  Good fun.

I just started a new job this year with a 2.5 hr round trip commute, 5 days a week (and I work 10 hr days). Sucks, but my wife’s corolla gets 40 mpg and I’ve been enjoying knocking out all these audiobooks. I did just sign a lease for a new home today, 20 minutes from work. I’ll still have the commute for 6 weeks, knocking out as many books as I can!

1. Wherever You Go, There you Are - Jon Kabat-Zinn
2. Digital Minimalism - Cal Newport (3rd book by him, very good author)
3. The Sixth Extinction - Elizabeth Kolbert
4. Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff, and It’s All Small Stuff - Richard Carlson
5. Talk Like TED - Carmine Gallo
6. Steal the Show - Michael Port
7. Ikigai - Hector Garcia, Francesc Miralles
8. As a Man Thinketh - James Allen
9. Do You Talk Funny? - David Nihill
10. Siddhartha - Herman Hesse
11. The Power of Now - Eckhart Tolle
12. The Alchemist - Paulo Cohelo
13. Think Again - Adam Grant
14. Crucial Conversations - Kerry Patterson
15. Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind - Shunryu Suzuki
16. The Stoic Challenge - William B. Irvine

Finished 14, 15, and 16. Went through 14 a few years ago, but needed to read again. 16. Was good, his other book, “A guide to the good life” is one of my favorites and one I read about yearly.

Some upcoming books are, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Extreme Ownership, The 5 Principles of Human Performance, and Brian’s Winter.

I’m moving in a few weeks, and my daily commute will go from 2 hrs 30 mins to 50 minutes, so my audiobook progress will go down significantly. That’s fine though, I’m loving the audiobooks but the commute is pretty crushing.

24. The Splendid and the Vile--excellent history of Churchill's first year as PM during WWII. Cannot recommend this book enough, and this from a reader that doesn't enjoy military history. It was full of stories and asides from people in his orbit. Their diaries, letters, and biographies of what was happening in his personal and professional life in one of the darkest periods of English history.

25. Not Tonight, Josephine--travelogue of two Brits driving a minivan (Josephine) across America and back again.

26. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol II-- Had to read a graphic novel for a reading challenge, and this was my third attempt to find one that wasn't so...graphic.

27. Born for This--a Chris Gillebeau book about doing what is right for you

28. Stillwater Girls--interesting addition to the 'abducted children' genre

29. The Blue Castle--childhood favorite by the author of Anne of Green Gables that is good for all ages

30. Farmer Boy--Laura Ingalls Wilder's book about her husband's childhood on a farm in upstate New York in the 1870s

31. Shapes of Native Non-Fiction--Collection of essays by Native American writers. Some deeply disturbing, some moving, some laugh out loud funny.

32. The Old Drift--one of my favorites so far. An intertwined saga of Zambians, both native and immigrant, over a century of tumultuous history.

33. Song of the Bones--#2 in a murder mystery series set in present-day Oklahoma.

I highly doubt I'll make it to 50, unless I count children's books, but I'd like to join anyway for the motivation and book recs, if no one minds. :)

1. A Promised Land by Barack Obama - highly recommend, even if you don't align closely with him politically. An interesting look into his life and presidency (through 2011 - there's a volume 2 coming out at some point)

2. Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi - highly recommend.

3. Nothing is Wrong and Here is Why by Alexandra Petri - recommend. It's a collection of satirical essays, the majority of which are about Trump-era politics. Some are just okay, but others are brilliant.

4. The Me, Me, Me Epidemic: A Step-by-Step Guide to Raising Capable, Grateful Kids in an Over-Entitled World by Amy McCready. Recommend. I picked this one after seeing it here, and liked it - a lot of good, practical advice.
5. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. YA historical fiction about WWII.
6. Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Non-fiction about being black in America.

These were both excellent, but both really heavy.
7. All We Can Save by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katharine Wilkinson (eds.). A book of essays about climate change" all written by women and girls. Recommend - there were some really moving and thought-provoking essays.

8. The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris. Novel about the holocaust, based on a true story.

A bit dense but very glad I read it)

13. The Guest List by Lucy Foley - whoever compared this to potato chips was right on!
14. A Gentlemen in Moscow by Amor Towles - I thought it was slow at first but the back half picked up pleasantly for me.
15. Behind the Attic Wall by Sylvia Cassedy  - This was a delight! It is a YA ghost story from the 80s. I read it when I was a kid, but a writer I admire posted about it recently on twitter and called it a "perfect novel." There followed a twitter thread where plenty of people talked about how the novel totally holds up, and it does! In fact, I think it might be creepier reading it as an adult and the writing was excellent.

1. Sapiens by Yuval Harari   -- ★★★★, very interesting.
2. A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles ★★★★½. Absolutely delightful book, just exactly what I (and I'm guessing everyone) needs right now.
3. The Stranger by Albert Camus -- ★★★★ Such a bizarre book. A horribly unlikable narrator, but not in any of the usual ways. Really makes you think.
4. Half a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. ★★★★½. So so sad. It's rare you see historical fiction with quite so much punch. I've now read all of her novels, and that makes me sad too.
5. The Sparrow by Maria Doria Russell.  ★½. Really did not enjoy this. I don't recall ever being so baffled at how well reviewed and awarded a book is. Interesting enough story that I finished it, I can't say anything else good about it. Hated is probably too strong a word, but not by much.
6. Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen. ★★★★. One of my guilty pleasures is reading books I loved as a child. The Hatchet series is as enjoyable now as they were to me at age 11.
7. If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino. ★★★★. I've heard it described as a meta-novel, and that's not a bad description. A reader's fever dream is probably a better one. In one sense, absolutely terrific. In other senses, it's so (intentionally) maddening and so (intentionally) difficult to get into, that I have to only give it 4 stars.
8. Scorecasting by  Tobias J. Moskowitz and L. Jon Wertheim. ★★★. Supposed to be a Freakonomics about sports statistics. It's fine, perhaps if I'd read it when it came out 9 years ago it would have felt more groundbreaking, but so much here is common knowledge now.
9. Enlightenment Now by Steven Pinker ★★★★★. I think we all know the world is better than it used to be, but it's hard to comprehend the scale of just how much better. If everyone in the world read this, it would be better still.
10. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. ★★★★★.  Ishiguro is my favorite author. As with everything of his I've read, it's impossible to say anything at all about this without it being a spoiler.  Probably not as good as The Remains of the Day, but it might be.

11. The Weekend Homesteader by Anna Hess. ★★★.  I have never even gardened and probably never will, so this is just lifestyle porn for me. Book was fine for that, but like all such books, it has simultaneously too much detail to be fun, and too little to be actually practical.
12. Essentialism by Greg Mckeown.  ★★★½.  I am probably the person in the world who needs to read this book the least. I should probably be reading the opposite book to this, a book called something like "Saying YES! to Life."

Next 20, with favourites marked:

63. A Court of Silver Flames - Sarah Maas
I love this series so much. This one, book 5, was intense. Probably the longest book I'll read this year as well, at 768 pages.

64. Pretties - Scott Westerfeld
65. Specials - Scott Westerfeld
66. Vicious Spirits - Kat Cho
67. Ella Enchanted - Gail Levine
68. Matched - Allie Condie
69. Flame in the Mist - Renee Ahdieh
70. Moon Called - Patricia Briggs

71. The Final Empire - Brandon Sanderson
72. The Well of Ascension - Brandon Sanderson
73. The Hero of Ages - Brandon Sanderson
I've been meaning to read this series for awhile, and it was SO GOOD. Love the fascinating magic system and fucked up/scary baddies.

74. First Test - Tamora Pierce
75. Page - Tamora Pierce
76. Squire - Tamora Pierce
77. Lady-Knight - Tamora Pierce
78. Calculated Risks - Seanan McGuire
79. Smoke in the Sun - Renee Ahdieh

80. Gods of Jade and Shadow - Sylvia Moreno-Garcia
A great story set in 1920s Mexico featuring a LOT of characters from Mexican mythology, which was new to me.

81. Trickster's Choice - Tamora Pierce
82. Trickster's Queen - Tamora Pierce

3. Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen (own, pre-2021, re-read)

5. The Fellowship of the Ring, J.R.R. Tolkien (owe, pre-2021, re-read). A long-time favorite read out loud back and forth with my partner.

6. The Biology and Ecology of Giant Kelp Forests, David Schiel and Michael Foster (library). Amazing if you want to go deep on kelp forests (not amazing if you don't).

Yep, I never reread books, with only one exception - in Simon Green's Beyond the Blue Moon there's this incredibly epic scene where the main characters go on a rampage, and I've read that chapter many, many times. The Tortall series has been pretty nice - I'm just wrapping it up with the Immortals quartet. The only set that was a miss for me was the Beka ones since I don't like books in journal format.

@StarBright-I ordered Behind the Attic Wall after reading your post. I love a good YA story, especially one that holds up and might be the perfect novel :)

34. The Siege Winter--recommended by a reader here and very enjoyable.

DNF--Whispering Rock, #3 in the Virgin River series. There are over 20 books in the series, so I had high hopes of falling into a long saga. Nope. Basically the same book as #1 and #2.

Currently reading-
A Court of Thorn and Flames. I devoured the other four in the series, but am neglecting this one. Should've reread at least the last one to refresh my memory.

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls II-one page stories about women who have rebelled against their roles in some way;  Nadia Comaneci, Rachel Carson, etc.

9. The Tyranny of Merit: What’s Become of the Common Good?, by Michael J. Sandel (Feb 10) (audio).
10. The Forgotten Garden, by Kate Morton (Feb 27).

11. Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches, by Audre Lord (Mar 4) (audio). The first time I've read any Audre Lord.  A lot of it was compelling, much of it was familiar in a way that I'm sure it wouldn't have been 5-10 years ago, and some of it didn't resonate.

12. Ravenna: Capital of Empire, Crucible of Europe, by Judith Herrin (Mar 6).  A lot more in-depth than it turns out I wanted to go.  As one perceptive reviewer put it, "couldn't see the Boethius for the bishops."  The conclusion, which was actually just a summary of the prior 400 pages, was probably what I really wanted.  But, I do know a lot more about the period from 400-800 in that region now, which was previously a mystery to me.

I could make more time for reading, but not twice or 6 times as much time. Amazing to see how many books some off you have gone through already this year.

I read about 3-8 hours a day right now, for context. I imagine most people would have trouble carving out that amount of time. My book consumption rate will probably drop considerably once life goes back to normal and I can socialize and do stuff again.
