Welcome!  It would be interested to hear your experience with immigrating to Finland in either the Off Topic or the Journal community.

A journal thread will definitely be coming soon. I'm actually mid-move, selling my apartment in Sweden and setting up in Finland with my fiancee. Plenty to share and get some mustachian advice on!

Hello everyone.  I think I may have just FIREd! Today was my first day of not going to work when everyone else did. I think it’s going OK so far.

I’ve been reading MMM for a few years, starting at about the time of a wobbly period for the tech company I worked for. I decided to get a bit more serious about financial resilience, and have MMM to thank for helping me realise that with a bit of extra effort I could target an early retirement. I had been thinking maybe in the next couple of years, definitely before age 55. Then, at the end of last year, aged 50, I was made redundant. Not quite at my ‘number’ but with the redundancy package, close enough. It’s all quite exciting.

Hi everyone.

I am aloevera. Have been lurking around here for years. I believe some point I read/skimmed most of the topics in "Ask a Mustachian" and "General" sections... Oh, I did read a lot when I realized what a gem I found. Wow. Very grateful for this incredible resource and people who contributed their time and experience to it.

This has really changed my attitude towards money and life philosophy. I try to live with purpose, critically examine everything I am doing and not be afraid to make changes. I am not super into money optimization and extreme frugality but I have a clear well-defined purpose for every single $ I spend. There is also a clear well-defined purpose for every $1 I don't spend ;)

Looking to giving back to the community, having an opportunity to share my thoughts and maybe even finding my tribe along the way!

Happy to de-lurk!

Hi everyone,
I’m NorwegianHomestead and my partner (Swedish) and I (Norwegian) are hoping to achieve FIRE in ten years. We live on a small homestead by the coast of Norway and are lucky to be able to work IT jobs from home. We spend a lot of our free time doing what we love; gardening, fishing, hiking, growing our own food, foraging, renovating our farmhouse etc.

Over the last one and a half year we’ve been reading more about FI and trying to cut our expenses and pay down the mortgage faster, as well as started investing. Our lifestyle is naturally cheaper than city life, but there is still a ton of changes we are learning to implement to be able to save more.

Can’t wait to get to know some likeminded people here!

Moof here.  Been lurking a bit. Thought I was doing pretty good, and I am by comparison to the average american, but feel I have been remiss now that I have seen how far a little more discipline goes.

Currently 39, wife, kid.  3 cars, but just $2k total car debt.  No credit card balances in years.  I was targeting mid 50's to retire, which seemed great till I realized I could possibly pull that in before I hit 50.  Currently sitting on $0.5 M in retirement accounts.  My own number is about $1.3M to feel comfortable cutting myself loose.

Currently I am saving a little more than 25% of my gross each year.  I am struggling to benchmark that properly given taxes and such.  Even doing my homework I struggle with properly weighting those effects between 401k's, Roth's, etc.

I grew up frugal (single parent, welfare, etc), but let things slide as I saw big paychecks come in.  I never questioned the save 10% mantra, wishing now I had kept it at 20% all along.  Luckily I have never racked up any real debt.  I used to freak out my girlfriend (now wife) by always carrying a few hundred in cash.  She never had that much spare, but it helped me stay disciplined.  I have let a lot of little things slide under the mantra of a happy wife is still cheaper than a divorce.  I need to work on getting us both on the same page better for not wasting so much money (or not being so damn cheap as she would counter).  Good times.
Had to check in with my 7 years ago self.  0.5M of savings has grown to 1.85M, aiming to pull the plug by the end of the year.  My target has moved a bit, $1.3M in 2017 dollars would be $1.63M, so we are targeting about 20% more than my past self was thinking.  My wife wants to keep working a few more years, so we will likely blow past are target by time she pulls the plug. She expects to break 6-figures this year, not sure if her thinking will change, but we are in good shape either way. I took a 14 month sabbatical, but have been working part time for the last 7 months, and very much not enjoying it.  Net worth is up at $2.3M with house equity and a college savings account for the kiddo.  My main headwinds are the impending need to replace a car, and some deferred house maintenance that will put a big dent in the slush fund outside of the IRA’s.  Past self should have understood Roth’s and the value of after-tax flexibility better.

Wow, I didn’t expect to be able to post here again! I received a perma-ban notice in spring 2022 with no apparent way to resolve it. I decided to look at the forums today as a guest, on a whim, and apparently I was still logged in. Hi, all!

I’m still in metro Detroit, still married (hit the 20-year anniversary last year), still in a little house (also hit the 20-year mark on that mortgage last year), still driving a now 12-year-old Prius and 23-year-old Chevy. Frugality has been a great boon for us; my income has gone up by about 50% in the last few years, which has allowed us to save quite a bit as we didn’t increase our spending much. Husband’s company was sold and then went through several rounds of restructuring, and he was caught in the most recent round of layoffs. Frugality means that his unemployment benefits cover our health insurance with a decent amount leftover, and all other bills and monthly savings and investments are easily covered by my salary. He’s working on a software certification that should give him access to a much wider (and better-paid) range of jobs, and we’re grateful that we can easily afford for him to take that time. Thank you all for your advice and example over the years.

We’re trying to survive a very gloomy MI winter and are looking forward to expanding the big vegetable garden that we set up in our yard last summer. We really need to speed up using the frozen basil pesto, adobo sauce, and zucchini and jars of various pickles from last summer’s bounty to make room for the next round. I’ve spent much of my free time this winter improving my gluten-free bread baking and spending probably too much on good cheese to go with it (no regrets).

Hi everyone,

I first discovered MMM in 2014 and started implementing his advice shortly thereafter. DW and I LeanFired earlier this year and we are starting the post-career journey traveling the world. We've been on the road for a little over three months, living in luxury in SE Asia on under 2k per month.

We never made six figures as a household, and managed to cross the finish line in less than ten years by keeping costs low, living simply, and investing in low-cost index funds.

Looking forward to engaging more with you fine folks!

Hello.

I hit my FI number this week. I was introduced to early retirement by Jacob Lund Fiskers blog and continued with Mr Money Mustaches blog soon after about ten years ago.
I have been a frugal person all my life but also made a lot of costly mistakes (Investing in gold, sports car, etc.). I´ve had luck too, one being investing a small sum into bitcoin back in 2013. My investing started in the nineties with hyped stocks of the time and the profits vanished multiple times in the crashes. With the mentoring of these blogs I turned my investments to a more sensible path with low cost index funds.
I live in Europe, in Finland. My income has been average. Over ten years ago I started working only three days per week after starting to track my spending more carefully and realizing how little I actually need. I also took two whole years off. So this has been a gentle ease into early retirement.
I haven´t deprived myself of anything. I own a house and drive an electric car. The family includes a wife and a son.

Greetings from the grim north :)

Hello.

I am a first-generation college student entering my junior year from a family with little savings. I hope to grow my own wealth and live off of it one day.

Dear Mustachians,

A couple of questions from a newb with some unusual parameters.

I have 500k usd saved up and sitting in a bank account (saved from high paying job of the past). I also have 100k$ separately as an emergency fund.
I now live in a relatively low cost EU country but unfortunately jobs here are very low paying and I won’t be able to save any longer.
I think I would need around 900k $ in order to retire given the 4% rule.
I would like to use a paying job and burn a little from my emergency fund and wait as ittle as possible to retirement. Prefferably 3-5 years.

1)   Should I DCA the 500k into index fund/s or lump sum? Or a combination of both?
2)   What do you think is best when it comes to ETFs? (S&P500) vs (a more global one) vs (high dividend yield one)? Or a combination or more than one? Any other asset class for diversification purposes?
3)   I am non-US person and so some of the US ETF options aren't available, but the major ETFs like the s&P500 there are EU alternatives that capital gains are taxed with 0%. Dividends taxed with 5%.
Any advice on the potential currency risk? All my savings are in USD and I will be using Euros for living now and in the foreseeable future.

Thanks in advance!

I retired in 2022 when I just turned 56 years old. Not so very young when compare to some of you here in your 30s or not too old to qualify for medicare yet, lol.

Since my company does at least one layoff every year, I did request my boss to put my name in that list and the following year, I'm gone with 6 months of severance package plus performance bonus and unemployment benefit. We both decided that this was the right time to retire from the corporate world. Was worried initially that I was still "young" to retire but looking back after two years, we were glad that we did it.

Financially, we are doing ok. House paid off and debt free (paid all of our credit cards on time). No kids, just with my lovely wife. I'm mainly focus on income investing. As for medical insurance, in 2022 when I retired (Jul to be specific), we didn't continue our health insurance (from Aug onwards) and drop the coverage and pay the tax penalty which is cheaper than continuing the existing coverage via COBRA. Luckily no medical issue for the remaining months. Phew! This year we manage our gross income to be within the limit of the ACA act, so we don't have to fork out any money for the health coverage.

Our main financial plan for the next few years: Do ROTH conversion via laddering, pay very little or no federal income tax and hopefully take social security benefits at 67. Fingers crossed.

Hi there,
Not everyone will follow this thread. You'll probably get responses if you post in the Investor Alley (also read the investment order thread there, if you haven't already) or Ask a Mustachian sub-forums.
If you can mention the actual country you're in, you might even get some country-specific advice.

Hello fellow Mustachians!  I have been following the blog off-and-on for several years.  During a conversation the other day, I lamented that I wished I had somewhere I could turn to seek financial and life guidance, and I was reminded of this forum.  So I finally decided to join and seek advice from the collective wisdom here.

Hello everyone,

I'm MarionBerry, I was recently told to check out this forum as part of a year late graduation gift/challenge from my uncle. In this gift he challenged me to read through several different articles and respond to a few prompts he gave me, in return he would give me some money for and help me set up a Roth IRA.

So far, I've learned a lot about market trends over an extended period of time, different types of investments, and how to prioritize my finances and lifestyle to maximize my net worth and minimize my spending. One of the most interesting things I have learned about is Parkensin’s Law and I plan to do some more research into it and the psychology behind it when I'm free. I'm also quite interested in what exactly cryptocurrencies are and how they work beyond just being a digital currency.

Hi. I am 41_swish.

I have always been curious about FIRE and finally went down the rabbit hole and learned about it. This lit a fire under my butt, and I have really started taking my early retirement.

Besides this, I really like running! I am trying to run an 18 min 5km!

Hi, Richard here from the UK

I started reading the MMM blog about 5 years ago and really struck a chord with me, ( some great new concepts I've followed up on since and some good reassurance about how I already saw things financially ) always planned to get out around 50 years old and hopefully nearly there ( 51 in January and hoping to be out in 2 years )

Only just got onto the forums but some interesting reading in here too which I'll look forward to catching up on.

My username is from playing bass in a rock band every weekend which is what I've loved doing to unwind for the last 30+ years - I wasn't going to pick Richard Insurance Broker that's for sure !

Greetings all. I've lurked on and off here for years but as I approach my FIRE date I figure I should join up. I am about to have a lot more time on my hands after all!

Some forums are far too conservative with higher earners (BH) and others are a bit too disjointed and temporary (Reddit) despite the good information they have. I am hoping more for a bit of community here where I can come back to things from time to time as I start my FIRE journey.

Nice to meet you all!

The fire reddit is wild. I see other 26-year-olds with 500k net worths and I am just like how?????

Regardless, I have tried the reddit and the BH forum and reddit and found this place to be the best. Welcome!

Thank you for the welcome! I'll be digging around here more in the coming months so hope to see you. Reddit moves quick and has variety to it so it is easier to browse but feels kinda 'tech bro' and BH has a lot of great info but the people there feel a bit out of touch at times. Also, they are both huge and things get lost in the crowd.

I'm 45 with 700k invested and it took me a long time to get here. Was hoping to build a little more several things converged together and the timing worked out so next year is my last. I might work some more in the future to keep busy but the higher paying side is done. So, 'retired' it is. Luckily I am quite frugal and have no debt. The math says I am going to be fine thanks to a small pension, paid off house, and covered healthcare, but it's a scary new world I'm going into.

Hi everyone, I’m Alex Morgan, and I’m thrilled to join this amazing community! I’ve been exploring the world of financial independence for a while now, and I’m always looking for smarter ways to live a fulfilling life without breaking the bank.

A bit about me: I’m passionate about [insert a personal interest, e.g., “DIY projects” or “traveling on a budget”], and I love sharing ideas and learning from others. I believe every step toward financial freedom brings us closer to living life on our own terms.

I can’t wait to connect, swap stories, and soak up all the wisdom this forum has to offer. Cheers to crafting a life that’s both badass and sustainable!

Hi.  I'm currently in western MN, eastern ND, USA.  My user name is "Finally Free" because I earlier this year I believe I have reached a state of "lean financial independence" with my BTC investments. It's my hope that in 2025, those investments will turn into "regular financial freedom".

I was laid off in the Great Tech Layoffs of 2023.  Due to the performance of my investments I've realized that I can support myself with my investments.

So now, I'm shifting my mindset to a "creator" mode, where I'm identifying projects that I want to build, on my own schedule, rather than what I'm assigned to do by an employer.

Feels good and I'm looking forward to the future!

And I'm happy to meet y'all! :)

Hi, my name is Joe, from Minneapolis, MN and love MMM!. I am looking to connect with other FIRE-D folks. I semi-retired at age 35 (landlord), its been 10 yrs now. It started as a 1 year sabbatical, and was a Renaissance year. This year has felt similarity, as attempting to live it like its my last year of life, and next year is my new life

Welcome, Joe!  I lived in the Cities for a few years (though I'm currently in Fargo, 3 hrs away).  I met once with the Twin Cities Mustachian group a few years ago and would really enjoy meeting with them again.

I'm not sure they are still active, but here's a couple links to that group:

I'm identifying projects that I want to build, on my own schedule, rather than what I'm assigned to do

And that, friends, is what real freedom looks like.

Hi,

I'm Barry and I'm retired in Colorado. I've been using the Cases spreadsheet to do trades on Roth rollovers.

Hi there - been lurking for awhile and have had lots of fun with all of the great info!

Not sure how active a poster I will be, but I do enjoy reading about how we are all making good financial decisions for the future.

Hello Everyone! I figure today is as good as any to finally get involved in this community and introduce myself after stumbling upon this forum/blog early last year.

I am a mid-twenties college graduate currently working in IT. In a best-case scenario, I'm aspiring to COASTFire by 40 and officially retire around 45-46 or so. This is 20+ years from now, but it's good to chart a course today, right? Let's see how things go from now until then!

And by making this post, it's official - I've put what I wanted into words for the world to see, so I can hold myself accountable. Hopefully one day I can look back and admire the journey and hard work it took to get from today to then, alongside everyone else here!

Hello, been reading MMM and investing since 2013.  My wife and I FIREd in 2024 and moved to France in January 2025.  ExpatFIRE definitely adds a few layers of complexity, as all of our money is in USD and subject to US taxes, but now our budget is in Euros and also subject to French taxes.  But now we're able to slow travel Europe, live car free, and hike/bike all year round.

I’m excited to be here. I’ve been reading the forum for a while and finally decided to jump in. I’m into [insert interest—cars, DIY, homesteading, parenting, etc.], always learning, and looking forward to sharing ideas and hearing from others. Thanks for having me!
