"Managing" an account really isn't that hard.
I have my checking account automatically ACH $1 into the Netspend every month and pull it out a few days later - this takes care of the "no activity" fee.
Then once every three months you log in to transfer the interest from the savings account to the card itself, then pull it all out using ACH.
After the initial setup this should take more than 5 minutes every 3 months, which is a really awesome hourly pay!

Also you can get $15 for depositing a $100 check by mobile deposit.  I had to go through some hoops - show them my id and a photo of myself for the first deposit. I just made a check out to myself and will withdraw it later.
Enter Bonus15 during the deposit - there is a promo box towards the end after you do the check photos

Just used two of the referral links posted above.  Tried to spread the wealth :)

I know this 5% offer has been around for awhile.  Has anyone had it for a few months and can attest to Netspend and if they have had any issues?

For those who have recently signed up for this, does the now required DD have to be continuous or just a one time thing to meet their requirements?

I had a similar $15 (or maybe $10?) bonus for depositing a $100+ check, but it came in the mail (either with my card, or shortly thereafter, I don't remember).
Worked just fine for me (deposited a check from someone else to myself that I happened to get, otherwise would have tried a check from myself).

I currently do my ach from a checking account at capital one, but I could have just as easily did it from savings.

For those who have recently signed up for this, does the now required DD have to be continuous or just a one time thing to meet their requirements?

I only signed up in November.  Is there a required dd?  I know to avoid inactivity fees there needs to be some activity each quarter.  What I do is once a quarter I have $5 ach onto the card and then later in the quarter it is ach back to my bank.   So far it's been successful.  Then after my intrest posts I move it onto the card, then ach it back to the bank.

I never needed a DD or ACH to set up the savings account.  You can select to open one once you have activated the card.

Many people have been able to avoid the Direct Deposit or substitute an ACH transfer in lieu of DD.  It may be worthwhile to read this post and the accompanying user comments:

http://www.doctorofcredit.com/netspend-allows-savings-account-without-direct-depositupgrade/

Mine triggered after ACH transfers for both NetSpend and Brinks accounts.

I started one. Setting up the automated ACH transfers now. Wahoo! Free $250/year. I think we'll end up opening at least four in total. Nice way to generate "free" Christmas money for the year, if nothing else.

Just got some standard blurb back from customer service - not likely that they will help out with this legitimate promo code.  I guess YMMV.

I referred my sister to NetSpend, and she received her card a few weeks after I opened mine. The weird thing is, she tried to fund from the same bank I did (USAA), and they "blocked" the verification deposits and locked her NetSpend account when she tried to add NetSpend as an external account in USAA. Has anyone else had trouble funding via ACH recently? Seems they might be cracking down on it? I told her to try PayPal.

That's strange, I use USAA as well and haven't had any issues at all.

I also had no problems funding my NetSpend account from USAA checking last week.

I had the same problem as kudy. I opened a Western Union NetSpend account and tried to set up ACH through USAA. The verification transfers were blocked. I called USAA and tried to sort it out. After about 45 minutes and speaking to supervisors in various departments, they told me that USAA will not ACH push into prepaid cards, though they said it can be used to pull ACH to pay bills. Strange.

I then tried to link it to my PayPal account, and was immediately denied. This is getting annoying. I don't want to have to open a whole 'nother checking account at another bank (Ally maybe?) and double the amount of automated ACHs that I need to set up, but for $250 a year it may be worth it...

I just set up mine this morning! Just waiting on the transaction confirmation (I bank with a local credit union and am hoping I don't run into any issues). My husband rarely gets excited about these financial finds (he's on board with churning, but doesn't really care), but he was pretty stoked that I found a place to park $30k with a guaranteed 5% return. I love this site.

I use Chase and I added the netspend card as an external account.  After a week or so of pending review it is now verified.  Just waiting on my initial transfer to go through on Monday.

Just be aware that the 5% is capped at $5k, so for $30k you'll have to open 6 accounts (all different cards unless you and hubby each get a card at each bank, then 3 different cards).

I signed up on Feb 10, and my card just arrived today, Feb 29
I activated the card online, opted out of info sharing via phone call, then started the ACH account verification process.

I also figured out how to do the check deposit (you have to sign up for text or email alerts. I chose email)
and applied the Bonus15 code, and it said I will get 115$ when the check is approved. Which may take up to 10 days.

Here is my referral code, and I thank anyone who uses it!!
Hey- if anyone uses it please post to let me know Thank you!

ughhh was just about to comment on that.  I searched for the account and then "recommended" that Mint add it.

Also it looks like you can just do a balance inquiry on the netspend card and that will make the account "active".  And I cannot find a minimum amount to keep on the card, but I guess I will leave $5 just in case.

I think you will want some kind of small balance on the card so that you can do the ACH pull/push twice a quarter to avoid the fees on the card.

Question- If you want to add extra accounts, can you still use referral bonuses to open them?

No more than one referral bonus every six months.

No more than one referral bonus every six months.

I opened a Brinks account last month without a referral bonus (I thought I had used a referral link but never got the bonus so assumed that I ended up not using it).  I'm in the process of setting up a Western Union account and did use a referral link for that.  I thought I would get the WU referral bonus since I didn't get one on the Brinks.  However, I just got an email:  "Your friend Xxxx recommended you get a WU NetSpend Prepaid Card like the one they have. We appreciate your order, but unfortunately your status as a current or past NetSpend customer or cardholder on the NetSpend card network means you and Xxxx are both ineligible for the referral bonus."

So it seems like only new customers on any of the NetSpend products are eligible for the bonus?  Or maybe you have to wait 6 months to open a new account to get a bonus even if you've never gotten a bonus yet?  Anyone have a different experience?

Mine shows both the debit card and savings account balance for all my Netspends, so I'm not sure why it's different for you two.

Same here.  Mint shows both debit/savings separately for my Netspend and Brinks accounts.

Mint had trouble with Brinks initially for me.  It only showed the prepaid after I added the savings.  Then it said something changed and it would fix it in a few days.  Nothing.  I deleted the account and re-added.  That seemed to do the trick.

I've got two Netspend accounts (one for myself one for wife) and have been pretty happy with the experience so far.  There's a fair number of hoops to jump thru to get it set up, basically you sign up and order a card, which you receive and then activate.  After DD more than $500, you receive a second card, which upon activation allows you to get the 5% savings account.  Start to finish it probably takes 2-3 weeks.  Interest is paid quarterly, working out to about $62 every 90 days per account.

There's also a chance to deposit a check using their mobile app and get another $10 or $15 dollars (there was a promo last fall, so look out for an opportunity) - e.g. https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/3omj5w/netspend_offer_load_a_check_with_the_mobile_app/.

Some useful info on this and other 5% savings accounts:  http://www.doctorofcredit.com/guide-to-5-interest-prepaidsavings-accounts/

Here's my sign up code - thanks in advance!

Well I was excited, but it looks like it's not meant to be. Got a "problem with your account error" after I activated the card. Called customer service--who said the problem was that I hadn't activated my card. I explained that I tried but got blocked. Then they said, ok we'll do it here. Gave them all my PII, and they couldn't activate it. And they weren't really sure why. So now I have to e-mail them a PII: social security #, drivers license, and utility bill. Even if I trusted sending that much PII through e-mail, I don't even have a utility bill because it's included in my rent. Ugh.

So, sorry for whoever won't be getting their referral bonus. I tried.

Worked easily for me.  Got the card pretty fast, set up a savings account with netspend, then ACH'd 5K from Capital One 360 to the netspend card and then moved to the savings account to start earning the 5%.  Got the $20 referral bonus as soon as my 5K showed up.  Sweet.

Huh. I set up my card without issues, I connected it to an ally.com account.
However, I submitted my check on 2-29 and have not had it go thru yet. It was made out from me to myself, so maybe thats not allowed.

Then, my husband got a card, he got it super quick in the mail, but it is taking forever to get it approved from capitalone 360 OR our joint bank account. Maybe that  is the issue? Does it have to be solely in his name? He also got a bonus code for a mobil check deposit, so I did that today and will see what happens.

I used someone's referral code on here, but now I can't remember who. It took a while for me to get everything set up...I use Fidelity and they make me mail in information every time I want to link a new account.

Anyway, here's my referral code if anyone wants to use it. I would much appreciate it!

I have been reading mixed things about how many cards/accounts a person can open. I have heard you can open one NetSpend, one Bricks and one Western union. Then I have heard you can open up to 3 each at Metspend, Bricks and Western union. Can anyone speak as to how many they have been able to open (in their own name) at each bank?

Doctor of Credit has the authoritative information:

Scroll down to the Multiple Accounts section.  I have one NetSpend and one Brinks account, each earning 5% on $5000 per account.

I just got my first Netspend card, added just $1000 on it, to make sure it was working.  It was.  Now I'm sending $4K from Ally.  I was concerned because I had read you had to do a payroll DD to activate the savings account, but I googled Netspend savings while I had my Netspend account open on another window and it linked to activate a savings account.  Needed my SSN.  Finance Buff has a tutorial.  It does say you may get a second card (Premier card) in the mail, but says to just leave it and not activate it.

Not yet @N but I just did it yesterday. The bonus code worked when I entered it though. Said I would have $100+15 deposited in 10 days. Maybe check in your email for the subject line "Mobile Check Load Transaction Notice" and try contacting the # in there?

Has anyone tried transferring the $5K out of the NetSpend savings account to an external account (i.e Discover bank, Ally etc.) and can comment on how that went.  Were you able to transfer the whole $5K out at once or did you have to do it in increments?

I asked Netspend about it, and they said I had to contact INGO who manages the mobil app. I called INGO and they said, no, my check was cancelled, and also, by the way, Im banned from the mobile app. I asked why and they said they couldnt tell me specifically, however, generally they ban people for suspicious behavior, like more than one account using the app. Yeah, like me and my husband. So I think we are both banned, and I wont be getting that 15$ bonus. Its possible they thought writing the check to myself was suspicious, but the person on the phone wouldnt say. Im seriously annoyed.

another problem! I finally got my husband's capitol one account connected the netspend account, transferred the money, and 2 days later, was contacted by capital one who said, they dont allow prepaid cards as external transfers so they were reversing the transfer. omg. so frustrating!

so I set up will ally, and it went thru. I use ally.com for mine, too. so hopefully its finally ok.

Got my Netspend set up.  Working on a Brinks account now.  Ally accounts transfer really easily.
