Netspend 5% interest up to $5000 - Who has one?
« on: August 21, 2015, 12:20:03 PM »
I am thinking of parking $5000 in a Netspend account to get the 5% interest.  Who currently does this?  Work well?  Any issues?

There is more info about this here (no affiliation with the site linked to)

I have Netspend and just opened a Brinks also. No issues, works fine linked through my USAA account, did you have a specific question I could help you with or where you just wondering in general?

Edit- Here's my $20 referral link https://mynetspendcard.com/prepaid-debit-card/applyNow.m?uref=7361731172
Looked in forum rules and it seems one time posting it is ok, thank you to anyone using it!

Did you go through USAA? (as in, do they sponsor the link)?

I'm going to move away from Mango because their new Visa version of the card requires a direct deposit of $500/month to earn 6% interest. Netspend looks like the right solution! Just ordered a card with tallen's referral.

Here's my link if anyone else wants to sign up and keep the referral train going: https://mynetspendcard.com/prepaid-debit-card/applyNow.m?uref=1253367891

Looks like I'm on the caboose of the referral train.  http://www.mynetspendcard.com/prepaid-debit-card/applyNow.m?uref=4226078862

Trying to keep the referral train going but your link only shows a $5 sign up bonus. (When I click on the others it shows $20) Can you try redoing to referral link and see if it changes it to $20?

Sorry, just saw this. No USAA doesn't sponsor the link, that's just the bank I use to transfer money in/out of the accounts (also works to get the bonus).

Thank you, I've read that using a joint account can be tricky, I'd say open a new account using one of the checking account sign up bonuses (you can find coupons on ebay-I just made $300 opening an account at Chase and they're not the only one doing this- http://www.doctorofcredit.com/best-bank-account-bonuses/ )

I am debating this to  keep our emergency fund.  Those who have it, do you regularly transfer out any money over the $5000?

I've transfered out money twice, once was what I had over the 5k, and once I had a small emergency and was $400 short and grabbed it out of there. No issues (or fees because I ACH transfered it) either time.

So to make sure i'm clear, you open a prepaid card and add  $40 to it. That gets you a $20 match plus the ability to open the savings account. It appears the card is free assuming I don't use it otherwise there are per transaction fees. So are most of you just leaving $60 on the card? Is there any fee for never using the card?

Found the answer. There is a $6 a month no activity fee.

To get the $20 bonus you have to open it through a referral  link, and you can avoid the no activity fee by loading a few bucks on there every couple months (free if you use ACH transfer) or using it (not free).

That's only if there's no activity on the account for 90 days.  Just ACH push and pull $5 every quarter (Ally works great for this) and you're golden.

Thanks. Figured that out, but honestly not worth the effort for $16 a month IMO.

I'm going to get an account.  Can I just have $5000 in there and ACH the interest (which won't get interest because the account is now/then over $5,000) out?

I referred my sister to NetSpend, and she received her card a few weeks after I opened mine. The weird thing is, she tried to fund from the same bank I did (USAA), and they "blocked" the verification deposits and locked her NetSpend account when she tried to add NetSpend as an external account in USAA. Has anyone else had trouble funding via ACH recently? Seems they might be cracking down on it? I told her to try PayPal.

That's strange, I use USAA as well and haven't had any issues at all.

To obtain a $20 NetSpend bonus from my referral link:

http://www.mynetspendcard.com/prepaid-debit-card/applyNow.m?uref=1906490327

Note that NetSpend will offer to upgrade your account to the premier version, but to reduce fees you probably want to keep it on a month-to-month basis. I have my USAA checking programmed for an automatic $5 transfer every other month to avoid fees (inactivity is 90 days).

I've also signed up for Brinks to get the 5% APR, but you can't get a referral bonus if you NetSpend account was opened within 180 days.  FYI.

Great account with no fee unlike Mango.  Make sure you transact once a quarter to avoid the inactivity fee.

Thank you anyone who uses my referral link!

Brink's referral link for anyone who wants a second account (or just wants it instead):
https://www.

Thanks, I just using .
Here's mine if anyone is interested in a Brink's card as well.  http://www.

I've read that you can sign up for 3 Netspends as long as they are different web portals. (Netspend, Brinks, Etc.)  Comparison Chart:

I just signed up using nvmama link.   Here is my link to sign up for Brinks:

I am considering creating a netspend account and putting my tax refund into it.  In the fees section though (when creating it via turbotax) I see that the NetSpend Premier costs $5/month.  Is there a way around this?  Create the account first so that it is not the premier level?

I created the account first and received the regular debit card.  Once you qualify for the premier level you can remain on the pay as you go plan and simply elect not to activate the premier level card.

Thank you!  That is what I was hoping for.

That link helped.  I have a Chase account and have been finding conflicting things about being able to ACH the netspend savings account back in into a Chase checking account.  Well here's to trying it in a week :)

Well I suppose I will add my referral link on here, thanks to the person I clicked (I can't remember which of you I clicked on!):  http://www.mynetspendcard.com/?uref=8057915528

I am excited by that article that said you can create 3 accounts per person, or 6 per couple to get a 5% return on 30K.  That would be awesome, and in my opinion worth the effort to manage the six accounts.
