Net Worth/Finances Google Sheet Tracker?
« on: March 18, 2024, 02:08:42 PM »
Hey all. I'm a big fan of using sheets, and I'm curious to see if anyone can recommend a free or low cost template that you use. Management of our finance data in one place would be super beneficial and save time. Thanks!

I use GnuCash. It's dedicated accounting software so it does everything right. And it is free!

Do it yourself? I mean, seriously, you should Do it yourself.  Isn't MMM and FIRE quintessentially about being self sufficient enough to be able to do lots of stuff yourself? As spreadsheets are pretty much a life skill in this day and age I think it qualifies that you *should* do it yourself rather than copying someone else's "homework".

I use a modified version of this Google sheet.  I love it.

See screenshots of my version in my journal.

Why use a spreadsheet?  you should build your own accounting system from scratch.  Computers are for sissies who want to capitalize off someone else's work!  Use twigs and rocks, you soft wusses!

We track this ourselves with a simple spreadsheet - on the left are Spouse 1 Expenses, on the right are Spouse 2 Expenses.

We have about 5 categories of expenses.

At the bottom we have a formula calculation to total each spouses expenses for each category and then below that we do total expenses. If you ever lose track of a receipt its pretty simple to sit for a few mins and go through banking transactions.

We do this for every month and just copy over the template, each year has its own Book (Spreadsheet file) and within that each month has its own page (tab)

This works for us and lets us track our spending vs allowance for each category.

Do you need to have CPA level skills to use it? Or can the average person without in depth accounting knowledge learn to use it over a certain period of time?

It's not much different than balancing a checkbook. You just need to understand the most basic concepts, such as assets/liabilities and double-entry accounting. There's also a manual and a guide which might be helpful to get started if you feel lost.

If you are willing to pay a bit for someone else's many hours/years of expertise and effort, there's a lady that sells financial templates for a reasonable price.  Check My Wealth Diary on Instagram or Etsy.  Most of her templates run $8-$30.  She's quite the Excel pro as far as I can tell.  I think this person posts on these boards from time to time, even.
