53. On Ocean Boulevard by Mary Alice Monroe
54. The Partner by John Grisham
55. I Was Told it Would Get Easier by Abbi Waxman
56. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
57. Us Against You by Fredrik Backman
58. Things My Son Needs to Know About the World by Fredrik Backman
59. Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson
60. Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
61. Divergent by Veronica Roth

62. Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

How was Anxious People? I usually find Fredrik Backman's books more pleasant on reflection than I do during the actual reading experience. I have this one on my hold list at the library, and I'm trying to figure out where I should prioritize it.

Ha!  What an accurate statement. I did like it but it took me much longer to read than it should have - the early part of the book was annoying.  We read it for book club and I could not read it quickly enough to finish before we discussed it.

I should mention I really enjoyed reading Ove and Beartown, though, not just upon reflection.  ;-)

82) My Brilliant Friend, Elena Ferrente
83) The Gentle Art of Tramping, Stephen Graham

86) On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, Ocean Vuong
87) Why We Swim, Bonnie Tsui
88) Drive your Plow over the Bones of the Dead, Olga Tokarczuk

How have I not noticed your list before?  Now I need to go see what other great outdoorsy books I've missed.  Do you recommend the swimming books?

Sorry @Splashncash , I just saw this now. I did like the swimming books particularly Why We Swim..it had a beautiful mix of personal story-telling alongside musings & research (which is just the mix I like even though I'm no distance swimmer myself).  I love a good adventure story that layers in other ideas as well..if you are interested in bike travel there is a great book called Land of Lost Borders: A Journey on the Silk Road by Kate Harris which I would highly recommend :)

2020
1. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer*
2. Y is for Yesterday by Sue Grafton...the end
3. Beyond the Point by Claire Gibson. Novel about women at West  Point.
4. Working Stiff by Tori Carrington
5. Lights Out, Sleep, Sugar and Survival by T.S.Wiley with Bent Formby, PhD. Full disclosure. I did  not finish. I  got pretty far.  This book was terribly written, not at all factual,  no research based results.  I cannot bring myself to donate or back to the little free library. It's going to be recycled.
6. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me  (and other concerns) by Mindy Kaling *
7. Once a Runner by John L. Parker Jr.
8. The Orphan Thief by Glynis Peters
9. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
10. Out To Work by Alice Kessler-Harris. * This was subtitled  "a history of wage earning women in the United States". Very interesting and illuminating book.  A bit hard to read,  very small print. Plus I think it's a textbook.
11.  Three Sisters by Susan Mallery (fiction/romance.  Fun read.)
12.  One Good Deed by David Baldacci.  This was good.  I'm not sure what the good deed was though.
13.  What We Forgot to Bury by Marin Montgomery.  A thriller that I read on the kindle, for free on a "free first reads". Pretty good.
14.  Shock Wave by  John Sandford.  Props to my friend Mindy who gave me a pile of books.
15.  Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes.  "We don't get fat because we overeat.  We overeat because we get fat."
16.  Invisible Prey by John Sandford.  I'd forgotten how much I like his books.  We stopped reading because they got really dark, but this one wasn't too bad.
17.  Storm Prey by John Sandford
18.  The 131 Method by Chalene Johnson (from the little free library).  Healthy food, talks quite a bit about intermittent fasting and lower carb eating.
19.  Flat Belly Diet by Cynthia Sass, Liz Vaccariello.  Another little free library book.  This book, like Why We Get Fat, goes into quite a bit of depth about hormones and insulin and fat gain and fat loss.  I was impressed with the detail.  I will probably keep this book as a general health reference.
20.  Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Good book.  To keep our teen reading, we are doing a family book club. Next up is The Hunger games trilogy.
21. The Secret of Red Gate Farm (Nancy Drew) by Carolyn Keene. I started reading this to the little one.  He got bored.
22.  Stolen Prey by John Sandford.  I'm on a roll with John Sandford
23.  The Hunger Games  by Suzanne Collins
24.  A Woman's World edited by Marybeth Bond. Short true stories and excerpts about women and travel.  Very good  until the last chapter,  which was depressing and kinda ruined the book.
25.  Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
26.  Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
27.  American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins
28.  Sweet Revenge by Diane Mott Davidson
29.  Gathering Prey by John Sandford
30.  Extreme Prey by John Sandford
31.  Golden Prey, by John Sandford - my first Kindle Library book!!
32.  How to be an Antiracist by Ibram X Kendi
33.  Put Out the Fires by Maureen Lee
34.  What the Dog Saw by Malcolm Gladwell (a collection of articles from the New Yorker) *
35.  Honeysuckle Season by Mary Ellen Taylor (a free first reads on Amazon)
36.  Last Train to Istanbul by Ayse Kulin
37.  The Dressmaker's Gift by Fiona Valpy
38.  Untamed by Glennon Doyle *
39.  Moonlight Road by Robyn Carr
40.  Still Waters by Viveca Sten
41.  The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
42.  Twisted Prey by John Sandford

I'm not gonna hit 50, but I'm doing great compared to last year's 27!

30. The Girl in the Tower, Katherine Arden (library)
31. The Sandman, Dirk Maggs and Neil Gaiman (borrowed)
32. The Mountainy Singer, Joseph Campbell (own, new)
33. Howl's Moving Castle, Diana Wynne Jones (library)
34. The Winter of the Witch, Katherine Arden (library)
35. The Tombs of Atuan, Ursula K. LeGuin (own, pre-2020)
36. Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen (own, pre-2020, re-read)

37. English Villagers of the Thirteenth Century, George C. Homans (own, pre-2020). I loved the hell out of this book. It's not for everyone, but it is very much for me.

38. Beauty of Life, supposedly by Kahlil Gibran (own, pre-2020). I love Gibran. This is a very beautiful edition (beautiful paper, binding, illustrations). This book... is not Gibran. It's someone cutting bits of Gibran texts out and smooshing them together, and it has none of his flow. Alas! I had thought it was actually Gibran.

Currently reading:

The Biology and Ecology of Giant Kelp Forests, David R. Schiel (library)
The Golden Bough, James Frazer (own, new) [oh my god this book is HUGE, it is SO HUGE]
The Road Not Taken and Other Poems, Robert Frost (own, pre-2020)

Pre-2020 books: 14/15

Local natural history and ecology: 3/9

36) And the Mountains Echoed – Khaled Hosseini.  For book club  Really enjoyed it.  Complex story lines
37) Medicine Walk – Richard Wagamese, For December book club.  I have not read Wagamese before and read this book in a couple of evenings.
38) Modern Lovers – Emma Straub, just picked it up at the library and read it very quickly.

I have a lot of pulls on my attention at this time of year.  But I am back into reading again.  I don't think I read 10 books last year.  It is so nice to have the brain power to read again.

I should mention I really enjoyed reading Ove and Beartown, though, not just upon reflection.  ;-)

Thanks for your insight. My digital copy is available so I'm going to give it a try.

I don't know if you have access to audio books or if you ever listen to them but the narrator of the audio book, Marin Ireland, is really good and she may make the book even more enjoyable.

I'm still working on these last few books and have a bunch of articles to read so that's pretty much my list for 2020.

It's so great to review at the end of the year and see which ones resonated the most (I'll bold some of my favourites)
Glad I made my way through some classics (Moby Dick--finally!)  and discovered authors such as Olivia Laing. I also read waaayyy more fiction this year..might swing slightly back towards non-fiction for 2021 but really enjoyed the foray.

I also am setting a goal to read from our bookshelf in 2021..I have some botanical & art books lined up and also would like to read more from my SO's adventure-travel/arctic collection..

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the thread. Almost everyone has included somewhere in their list a book that I've read. Nice to hear of books that I've previously enjoyed being read by someone else thousands of miles away. I often check out books that posters here have been reading. So, thank you all for bringing some good books to my attention, either already read, or for 2021. Still plenty on the Tsundoku pile though :-)

Definitely - this thread is where I get most of my To Read list from, and it's exciting when I dredge up a recommendation from somewhere else, read it, and see others in this thread reading it afterwards. It makes reading much more social, and even though it's only one little thread on the big forum, it's a big part of the MMM community for me.

I am halfway in a book called "Normal people" by Sally Rooney, in a Norwegian translation. On the first page I found out that we (binge)watched this story in a TV serie earlier this year. The TV serie was quite disturbing and kept me thinking about it a lot. The books is the same as the series and again I get this feeling that the main characters are making wrong decisions (for their own good), all based and communication problems. I couldn't sleep well at night at all. So I consider to not finish the rest of the book. I know how the story continues and the characters will continue to make wrong decisions. That disturbes me way too much.

It was a good TV serie, and the book is also good. It is just that I keep thinking about the wrongs in the story all the time and it stresses me.

2020

43.  Bad Blood by John Sandford
44.  The Simple Truth by David Baldacci
45.  The Yellow House Mystery by Gertrude Chandler Warner (Boxcar children)

I should mention I really enjoyed reading Ove and Beartown, though, not just upon reflection.  ;-)

Thanks for your insight. My digital copy is available so I'm going to give it a try.

I don't know if you have access to audio books or if you ever listen to them but the narrator of the audio book, Marin Ireland, is really good and she may make the book even more enjoyable.

I enjoy audiobooks when I can get them through the library. My copy of Anxious People was a kindle version from the library. I found it more enjoyable and funnier than some of his other books.

I am at 96 books and I'm afraid I can't reach 100. There has been chess on TV for 2 days, which I prioritized before reading. I also prioritized playing scrabble. I still hope to finish one extra book.

Congrats on having "beaten" me. I was not willing to read more than a reasonable amount of time at the end of the year, so I did not reach 100 books. I still think it was natural for me to read all them, because I really enjoy reading in general.

Thanks for all the reading inspiration this year!  I already track my reading 2 ways, so I didn't update this thread during the year, but it was fun seeing what everyone else was reading (and I feel like I want to be some of your friends, based on our shared taste in books!).

Here are my reading stats for 2020:

Total books – 105
Total pages – 31,394

Digital/physical pages read – 17,826
Audiobook time – 15 days, 2 hours, and 11 minutes

Fiction – 66%
Nonfiction – 34%

Female authors – 81%
Male authors – 16%
Non-binary authors – 3%

POC authors – 34%

37) Medicine Walk – Richard Wagamese, For December book club.  I have not read Wagamese before and read this book in a couple of evenings.
38) Modern Lovers – Emma Straub, just picked it up at the library and read it very quickly.
39) Swing Time – Zadie Smith
40) The Piano Maker – Kurt Palka – for January’s book club.

I really loved this thread and am amazed that I read 40 books this year.  Thank you to the lock down!
And now on to the 2021 thread.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
