Mustachians in Europe / Germany?
« on: May 28, 2016, 06:52:00 AM »
It seems like many Mustachians are clustered around Colorado / Boulder / Longmont.. What about those likeminded people who live in Europe.
We are on the final stretch towards early retirement, currently living in Asia and planning to return to Europe in 2018. Looking for the ideal place in Europe to settle down. What is the European version of Boulder, CO? Where is the best place to retire in Europe? Or in Germany? Are there any German Mustachians out there?

Living in Germany. In one of the least Mustachian areas. No idea what the German Boulder is. Tell me when you find it. :-)

My wife and I live in Switzerland for the accumulation phase, but we will probably move back to Germany when we are FI.

Switzerland is ideal for accumulation because the overall wage level is ridiculously high. Prices are also high, but saving 65% of a huge salary means a faster-growing stache compared to saving 65% from a merely decent salary.

If German Mustachians would decide on a city to live in, this would influence our decision on where to settle down once we get back to Germany. I imagine several streets inhabited mostly by Mustachian citizens, with the Mustachian Party getting a few seats in the city council, lobbying for bike-friendly city planning and a well-stocked public library. ;)

I'm living in Berlin. Poor but sexy, which means its not as consumerist as a lot of the large (west) german cities but that's more from poverty than a desire for a frugal lifestyle. What money is available does seem to get spent at hipster bars a lot :)

I'd love to find a mustachian group here that could help push me more into the lifestyle. I'm sure I need some face-punching but would love to have people who could tell me exactly where and how with the local conditions (investments, cost of living, insurances etc etc etc)

Sounds like a plan! :-)

That's pretty much exactly what I was looking for.. But where in Germany or Europe could that be ? What I and likely other early retirees would need would probably be some place with reasonable property prices, general low cost of living, good biking infrastructure and possibly good access to mountains for skiing or snowboarding. Since we spent the last more than 10 years abroad and my wife being non-German I'm also looking for an area with a population less hostile towards foreigners and with good access to international schools.
So far my thoughts circle around the area west of Berlin / Potsdam or somewhere south of Munich . Alternatively I am also contemplating if South Tyrol (Italy) could be an option ... Unfortunately I'm not so familiar with the cost of living and taxes in that region... Any other proposals anyone?

Speaking of taxes my whole early retirement plan would fall apart if they were to change the 25% general capital gains tax ..
