GIS/Urban Planner looking for work ANYWHERE
« on: January 12, 2015, 04:51:43 PM »
Hello fellow Mustachians!

I am a 27 year old GIS specialist and Environmental Planner currently working a fellowship with the Bureau of Land Management. I have no long-term obligation to the position and the funding runs out in June 2015.

I have a Bachelors degree in Geography and a Masters of Science in Urban and Regional Planning. I am willing to relocate almost anywhere internationally and continue to pursue my career in GIS or Planning.

Any aid in this process would be greatly appreciated! The sooner I get a permanent position the sooner I make it to FIRE!

Thanks!

Siobhan

Have you looked at current postings on GIS Cafe? I'm in DC and there are ALWAYS GIS postings open.  I do Geospatial engineering (so a mix of programming and GIS) and I've never had an employment issue in the DC area.  My company doesn't have any open reqs at the moment for GIS but this is around the time the postings open up for a lot of the gov jobs in the area.  Check the individual contractors websites like Boeing, BAE, Honeywell etc.  They are all using GIS now.  DC Metro was looking for someone a few weeks ago I heard from a friend.  CIA, NSA, FBI all have analysts as well, and NGA and Army GeoSpatial are all in the area. Their individual websites are generally the way to go and USA jobs as well.  You will wait months to hear an answer so put in the packages now.

Have you considered looking for a position with a utility company, fiber company, oil and gas company, county, municipality or for a one call center? All of these guys work together to make maps of their underground lines and to keep current map information up to date for real time use by the utility infrastructure & damage prevention systems across the USA.

Just something to google!

I am job searching in a close enough field that I see the GIS positions that are advertised in my area.  Here is one that was just posted yesterday: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/gov/4876256425.html

Edited to add:  here's another one: http://monterey.craigslist.org/gov/4864254331.html

And Apple in Santa Clara is apparently hiring a GIS Tech..
