Hallo Deutschen Mustachians!

I see that you have a meetup in tentative talks, but has a date been decided? I should be in your country 5 weeks from today, in the Bremen area. Are there any Mustachians local or close to that city?

Thank you Donvito. I appreciate the help. It looks like I may be able to swing the bikes as checkin baggage for free (still need to confirm this). But I am glad to know there are some good alternatives.

Heyho :) A new wannabe mustachian here :D

I'm from Berlin and currently writing my diploma thesis (Computer Science Major and Psychology Minor).
In september I will move to Hamburg, as I was offered a job by a relative.

Having read MMM for a few months now, I try to find a shared appartment (WG) in bike biking distance from work, but this is uglier than I imagined, as the appartment prices in central Hamburg are plain ridiculous :D

I won't give up though, as the prospect of not having to work but being free to work is most appealing to me :D

I would hope to meet any of you guys in the future, spending the evening at the beautiful Alster parks!

Hey there!
Just wanted to say hello to you fellow Germans. I'm happy to join the community :-)
I followed your discussion on health insurance. It also seems to me that state health care is better when you're retired and/or have a family (unfortunately, it's damn expensive while you work and don't have kids yet). I just wanted to add that living in your own apartment or house really helps: you will have less income (because you invested in your house and less into stocks and such), but you don't have to pay rent and the lower income means you have to pay less for health insurance and taxes (not spending X is always better than earning +X). Of course it all depends on the real estate prices, and they're pretty tough at the moment, but it's something to consider.

Have a nice day :-)

Also a mustachian greeting from Munich!

After reading through all the blog now I am switching to the forum to discuss topics especially regarding the german specifics.

Just a couple words about myself. I am a 30 year old software engineer originally from Göttingen (near Kassel or Hannover) and even more originally from Kasachstan (Aussiedlerdeutscher :)). I started to read MMM three months ago. Before that I though I am more or less alone being pretty frugal, riding a bike almost for any demand and and at any weather conditions around town and save the money for  long term investments like for an own nice flat or house instead of wasting the money on e. g. an expensive, sometimes beautifully bended modern steam machine called "car". It was like a relief and almost like finding a soulmate reading MMM. It seems that many of our synapses are forming the same paths in our brains because the rationals in the various posts are the same.
My wife and I have been frugal all along. During the college I managed to save a nice amount of money almost dept free (except of 10K Bafög which will be payed back in cash soon). The MMM blog speeded things up and we invested currently already besides "Festgeld" also into some stocks (e. g. Apple), ETFs (SP500 + DAX + DIVDax) and also into german "Lending Club" equivalent (auxmoney). Our savings rate over the last 12 months was 65%. I am quite proud of it taking into consideration living in the most expensive town in Germany and not being a freelancer :). I don't think that this is going to get much better so we are focusing to raise the capital returns on investment (currently around 4% average) and also getting a second full time salary coming from my wife also as software engineer.
My plans on the excel sheet say that we can be FI in about 8 years by continuing to work max. half time. Maybe I will quit the job in software engineering and do "something my hands" or even mainly just raise the children.

Would be nice to meet some Mustachians in Munich or in the near neighborhood (50km by bike is ok :)), get to know each other a little bit and exchange some knowledge about the "german way of FI".

Long post. Thx for reading and see you around at least in this forum. Cheers.

Welcome Perpetuummobile!

It looks like you are very well on your way!

Thank you for mentioning auxmoney. Looking it up right now.

How do you manage your stocks?

Welcome Perpetuummobile!

Augsburg Mustachian here, but working near Munich (Kirchheim). Would be nice setting up a meeting in either town (Augsburg seems to be more mustachian in terms of prices, hehe).

Looking forward to great discussions!

Hello fellow bavarian Mustachians,
I would be very interested in meeting up as well. I live in Nürnberg, so maybe a meetup in Augsburg would be ideal as it is more or less in the middle... let me know what you think!

Hi Perpetuummobile,
how was your experience about auxmoney?
As I know, auxmoney do many ads, including in television, and that's why I'm really sceptic.

@viverl, maybe you shall check auxmoney before investing. Such as, how is the credibility and reliability of this portal? As we can find in internet the feedbacks are not so good. Take a look in http://www.gutefrage.net/frage/auxmoney-de-kredit-von-privat-an-privat-wer-hat-erfahrung.
I think if you are looking such a "lending club" "smava" may be better than auxmoney. but you shall check and take a time to reads some information before put your money blindly.

I am very sceptic of auxmoney, too. I tried to register but they wouldn't allow me to fullfill this without a credit card. That threw me off. I am checking out smava just now!

Hey, I'm german too.

I'm not very happy with auxmoney, I invested 200€ in July and have not heard anything ever since.
I'm also reading a lot about people not paying their credits, credit fraud and all that. But my most serious concern is, that I don't feel comfortable lending money to people, who are obviously to good with money. Even my Dispo on my checking account is way cheaper than auxmoney.
I won't continue my investment with auxmoney.

Servus mitanand!

Great to see there are so many fellow Mustachians here in Germany! I discovered MMM only a couple of month ago (actually through the mentioned Spiegel.de article) and found it absolutely mind-blowing. I have already been quite frugal before but still believed of early retirement as something you reach at 62 if you´re lucky. But after reading the complete Blog-archive and having a look at what others had to say to the topic I now aim to reach FI way before 50. I am 32 right now so it is still a long journey.

It would be fantastic to have a little get-together and discuss ideas, plans and possibilities. It is quite hard to find decent any information on how things work over here in Germany if you want to break out of the common route you are intended to take. This weekend I have been searching if there are any government-supported saving-strategies or any tax-benefits for savers who don`t to work until 60-something. Appearantly this information is very rare, so we should share our knowledge and support each other.

I'm from this big, expensive city in Bavaria which is currently full of drunk antimustachian people in Lederhosn but I don't mind travelling a bit. Who is in for a meetup?

Cheers,
Geldbart

<- Karlsruhe, but I'm up for some travelling since I'm on vacation for the first two weeks of October.

I don't think there are any tax advandtage ways to save. There might be some holes with Riester and/or rental properties, but I'm very sure they are not intended.

This weekend I have been searching if there are any government-supported saving-strategies or any tax-benefits for savers who don`t to work until 60-something.

Zeitwertkonten would be one option. Your employer can keep part of your salary and invest it. Later you can reduce the number of hours you work (down to 0) and receive a salary from the saved amount. Taxes are due when you actually receive money. Drawbacks: It obviously depends on your employer. There is currently a number of court cases where the owner of a GmbH is eligible, as well, so there would be ways to found your own company to get a benefit.

As most remaining tax saving strategies this can be a complex thing and is mostly likely to change anyway. We do not have a simple approach like they have in the US or Canada.

I didn't find anything sensible either. All articles I found consider 62 to be a very early retirement age and make a big deal out of it. Apparently the people who designed our retirement systems couldn't imagine that something as extreme as Mustachanism might exist. Maybe we should found our own party if there are so many of us?

So who is in for a meeting somewhere in south Germany / Bavaria?

The topic of a bavarian meetup came up about a month ago (see a few posts above), but I haven't heard back from anyone since. Jacky was interested in meeting up as well and even started organizing something in BW, but I think this didn't generate too much interest either. Regardless, what do you think about meeting in Ingolstadt? It's right in the middle between München and Nürnberg... I'm not sure about the date though, the next two to three weeks are going to be a bit busy. Maybe in late October?

Hi all,

as donvito mentioned in the previous post, I've already created a doodle for a meetup and I'm still interested to meet other german mustachians. At least, last time I met Woody in Karlsruhe :)
The doodle has been updated with the suggested cities, just check it http://doodle.com/a9nz5q2parpap5hg

Thanks, found it and signed in. But more important than the place would be a date for the meetup. Since there are a couple of us in Munich and Augsburg we could carpool and even ride to such exotic places like Stuttgart or Frankfurt.
I am extreemly flexible in October (any date before the 27th would be fine, maybe best a weekend) but in November we would have to meet in Peru if was to join. That would be really cool though... ;)

Hi everyone,

sorry it took me so long to respond - seems we have a winner: Stuttgart! In October, I only have time on the evening of the 26th, who else is available on that day? Geldbart, when will you be back from Peru? Maybe if this date doesn't work out, we could try and organize something in December. Or we'll just fly to Peru :-P

Hi viverl,

in my humble opinion the interest rate of German private lending platforms such as smava is overrated. If you compare the CDs e.g. here:
http://www.modern-banking.de/festzinsanlage_ueberblick.php
with the expected interests e.g. here
http://www.smava.de/1732+Statistiken.html?volumnTableDuration=-1&interestTableDuration=36&averageInterestTerm=180
you will realise that 3 years of lending has no great advantage at all.

I personally would stick to traditional CDs.
The advantage: You know what you get.
The disadvantage: Private lending might be better (or worse) depending on the payment moral.

Best regards,
Woody

I have also time on 26th October and I can come to Stuttgart. How about at 5 pm? Is the time too early for people coming from Bavaria?
At the moment I still don't have any suggestion in which place.

Aachen here - the deep west chiming in!

I am in a very lucky special position to start my mustachian adventure. I founded a company last year, but kept my regular job at 60% (3 days per week) with 60% pay (and all the insurances!). Now my company failed, but I have no open loans or anything. Privately I owe my wife some money (no interest) and I have a small loan that's payed off in december. I have zero svings. Due to this own-company-project, I had bootstrapped all my expenses last year and cut down everything I could to live happily with my remaining income. Now I am back to 100% in my job - with even a nice raise in salary :D

I plan to save all the extra money and a bit more! Yay for Mustachianism! I found out about this in exactly the right moment in my life :) Reading the MMM blog already gave me a lot of good ideas I am following right now about cutting down costs even more!

Jacky, I actually think 5pm is too late... I checked out the train connections between Nürnberg and Stuttgart, and they're horrible! The last halfway decent connection is at around 6.30pm, after that every train takes close to or even over four hours, and that is way too long! Let's see if anyone else responds; if it's just the two of us, I might bail out of it too because then we might be better off communicating via email or Skype or whatever rather than spending a whole afternoon on a train. So, anyone else want to join in? ;)

Also @Hoerwolle, that's a very cool idea funding a company but keeping your regular job at a reduced salary. It really helps take away the fear that comes with being self-employed I would imagine! I would be really interested in what type of company it was and why it went bankrupt...

Well, it's not exactly bankrupt, but the founders are deeply at odds by now - we had all the personal drama you usually see in daily soaps. And at one point we concluded we can no longer work together like this. I poured in a lot of time and money (direct and indirect) and the only thing I gained was experience, so yes, I am a bit bitter, since I did my best to hold everything together.

Hi everyone,

Just posting so that I get to find out about it if a meet-up ever does happen. Still a very, very junior-mustachian (still have debt!) but getting there. I'm Irish but have been living in Dusseldorf for about five years now. Hope to move further south (B-W rather than Bayern) next year but a lot of things need to happen before then. Finish paying off debt and then pass my translator exam so that I have a potential way to earn extra income (that's kind of mustachian of me, I think).

Was really interested to see there were a quite a few Germans posting here - very convenient for me since I had been trying to figure out  how to translate the advice given here (with regard to investments etc.) into life in Germany.

Hello all.  I am American, but of German ancestry and would love to travel to Germany with my family someday to explore our genealogy.  M children are still young, so who knows when it will be.  I am in my early 30s, have lived a very mustachian life so far.  I'd love to touch base with English-speaking mustachians in Germany that would be interested in offering cheap lodging and tourism advice when we travel.

Hi guys,

@moonwaves: Unfortunately, a meetup never happened (at least as far as I know) because of lack of motivation to travel since we all live in different areas of Germany. I don't live anywhere near Düsseldorf myself, otherwise I would be up for it. If you are ever in north Bayern, let me know :)

@baulrich: Coming to Germany to see where your ancestors came from sounds like an awesome reason to travel! I am part Italian myself and traveled to south Italy last year for the first time to meet my relatives there who I've never met... definitely an interesting experience and one I wouldn't want to miss! Do you know where in Germany your ancestors came from? I don't have much room to host an entire family, but I'm always interested in meeting new people, so if you make your travel plans a reality, make sure to be in touch!

Hi everyone,

sorry for not responding but I was extremely busy at work the last couple of months and to be frank forgot to check the forum all together (shame on me). Someone mentioned a facebook page as an easier way of organizing the German based Mustachians so I created one:

https://www.facebook.com/germanmustachians

Feel free to join and discuss. Maybe it will be easier this way to create a meet up!
There isn't much on it right now, so feel free to share your ideas.

So long!

Hi there, sorry for my late response.
I think we should try again to make a meeting. But it's not very mustachian to travel 500 - 1000 km just for one evening.

@Moonwaves: I live near Düsseldorf and commute almost every day to work to Düsseldorf.

Hi all,

We're from Stuttgart, reached FI this year. We'de like to reignite the idea of a meetup n southern Germany.

We're planing a non-commercial European Financial Independence Week. What do you think? Have a look:
http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/financial-independence-week-europe/

Apart from that who's interrested in a Meetup in Stuttgart?

Looking forward to your feedback!

Hi,
I would join a meeting in Stuttgart. This is rather close to my location, but it mainly depends on the concrete date. I have some important exams to pass within the next 6-7 months. But if the time is right, I would like to join a meetup.

Hey, there's a german MMM facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mustachians.germany/
We will arrange a mustachian meetup in Stuttgart in Jan/Feb.
I know some peopel don't like facebook, but this forum is really difficult. Just create a fake profile, come on. See you there

Hey guys,
I would join in as well! Coming from Nürnberg, so not too far. There was a Facebook page mentioned earlier in this post which seems to be not in existence anymore...

@Whatlifecouldbe: Love the story that you shared on your blog! Impressive RE investment record ;)

Thanks! We just posted our full story how we reached FI: http://whatlifecouldbe.eu/2015/12/03/financial-independence-in-9-years/
We really want to get to know other mustachians in the area. That's our main reason to start the blog.

hey German Tripple M's, since i am fairly new to the MMM way, even though i am doing many of those things for 2 years now, i was looking for more germans who might like to discuss the german special mustachian way, since some of the thigs we have there are a bit special and different than in the US.
Is there a special area in the forum or another facebook group i didn't find yet?
Would love to discuss the topics :)
