Qusetion about Evaporator Coil in HVAC air handler
« on: July 03, 2024, 07:23:35 PM »
I know I have an evaporator coil in my  Trane air handler. I do not know if I am able to access more than half of it. No answer after googling it for half an hour.

I can see the evap coil when I remove the air filter. I can even clean it.

I need to know if there is another evap coil in a mirror image. I think most evaporator coils are the ' A-coil' shape, which have 2 halves, in the shape of an 'A frame' chalet.  I think I cleaned one half of my coil.

So my question is : do most heat pump air handlers have  this dual setup? And how do I clean the other half if I can't access it?

Thanks

You need the model number of your coil, then look up the specs/drawings.

Was the side you cleaned dirty?  If so, you have an issue with your filter not sealing properly.

To access the rest of the coil, you may need to cut a hole in the duct. This is commonly done for duct or coil cleaning.  You can reseal it with duct seal tape.

Thanks. Will look it up.

Yes, the side I cleaned was quite dirty with regular brown/grey dirt. I think the air flow has improved. Cleaned it all out with a soft toothbrush, followed by vacuum cleaner.

Not sure I want to risk damaging something by cutting it open to access the other half of the A-coil, assuming there is one.

Thinking of living with one clean half-coil and one probably dirty half-coil, and calling it a day.

I always assumed (wrongly) that all I had to do was change the air filter, and that I was going above and beyond by cleaning off the half of the coil under the filter. I had seen drawings of another half of the coil along the way, but it never dawned on me that that half had to  be cleaned also, lol.

I think, at this point,  I do NOT have an A-coil. Just a one-sided coil. From looking at the ducting, an A-coil doesn't have room to be there.
