Insane Sqeaky Box Spring Fix
« on: April 03, 2015, 10:38:13 AM »
I wasn't sure whether to put it here or in the "Share Your Badassity" board but wanted to share on MMM in case anyone else has (or eventually has) this problem.

My box spring was really getting bad.  It's only 10 years old, and appeared in great shape, but the volume level of squeaks were getting close to unbearable.  ...To the point where I began to get worried the neighbours would start to complain and where I was embarrassed if I had to go there with a ladyfriend.  (Hey, it happens occasionally.)  One overnight ladyfriend even commented on it.

I was resigned that I'd likely soon have to get a new one and wasn't looking forward to it.

Then I watched this guy's video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YIzMPil138

I was disappointed when I removed the bottom fabric and saw mine looked a lot different inside but I slathered loads of glue between all the board joints anyway and gave the metal bits a very light spray of WD40.  I didn't hold out much hope but now it doesn't squeak at all!  It's actually weird to get used to a totally silent bed.  I guess all the noise was coming from wood rubbing against wood.

So, there you have it--for about $1 I saved myself buying a $200 new box spring.  (In a case where I'm sure the majority of the population would have gone out shopping.)   :)

Nice! It's amazing how much can be fixed with the right small thing -- glue, grease, tape, etc. -- and it's so, so satisfying when it does work.

Nice!  Although $200 for a box spring is ridiculous, when you can frequently pick them up for peanuts off Craigslist/bookoo/whatever, or even free if you drive around on trash day...

^ One word- bedbugs. Not to be a party pooper or anything but they actually prefer box springs.

Ew no no no sometimes $200 is cheap and that is the case here.  There's no free lunch when it comes to your bedding.  Ugh.

never understood box springs. All they seem to do is raise your bed up higher. They don't really add any additional comfort?

I eliminated mine about 5 years ago and built a bed with shoe storage along both sides and 4 shelves in the front for clothes.

Good job on saving the $200 though!!

I also can't stand squeaky/ noisy beds. When I built my new one I actually offset the headboard about 2 inches to allow for the base and shoe mold and then screwed the headboard directly to the wall with 6 screws into studs. Now when my ladyfriend (wife) is in the mood the headboard won't wake the kiddoes :)

It's back to freakin' squeaking again.  I knew the layout of the inside of mine was maybe too significantly different from the one shown in the video.  I may try something like you said here.  ...Something solid.
