Friend about to spend $250 on a sink faucet - cheaper version?
« on: October 17, 2015, 11:09:55 AM »
A friend of mine is redoing her bathroom and wants to buy this Moen faucet. With associated towel rack, etc, it'll be over $300. She seems open to a cheaper option, but it has to be wrought-iron. Does anyone have experience with Moen substitutes? Is Moen possibly worth that much money for a faucet? (I'm deliberately ignoring the regular $427 price tag, because that seems bananas.)

$250 isn't crazy like this faucet:

But it's pretty crazy.  I spent like $60 on Price Pfister that's been trouble-free for 10 years.  Choosing an obscure finish like wrought iron means it will cost more. Chrome, stainless and nickel are cheaper because more are sold/made.

$1600 for a faucet! Holy shit.

Thanks for the brand rec. As for the finish, I'll see if she's flexible. Something like this is under $100 for "Tuscan Bronze": http://m.homedepot.com/p/Pfister-Cantara-4-in-Centerset-2-Handle-High-Arc-Bathroom-Faucet-in-Tuscan-Bronze-F-048-CRYY/204150004

You don't necessarily need to spend THAT much but I've seen some cheap faucets look really, really sad in just a few years. A dark finish like that is doubly prone to oxidation/yuckiness, I've seen many look terrible after just 2-3 years.

If a cheaper substitute is found, at minimum it should have a PVD (physical vapor decomposition) finish. Or at least that was the recommendation back when I handled hardware professionally. I'm a few years out of date on plumbing.

$250 isn't frugal by any means, but it's not terrible either. We bought a pretty bottom of the line Delta faucet from a bathroom/kitchen store. Even with the contractor's discount, it was $125 or so for the chrome. The stuff they sell at Home Depot and Lowe's is cheaper because they use plastic parts on the inside. At least that's what every plumber has ever told me. The plumber who did our new bathroom refused to put in anything from a big box store. At least he wouldn't warranty it. Having said that, we have an American Standard faucet from Home Depot in another bathroom that looks great and never drips after over 10 years of regular use.

I would have similar concerns to thegoblinchief that this wrought iron finish would cause problems long term. IMO chrome is classic and never goes out of style. I would never do a bathroom in anything else.

But, no, $250 for the Moen isn't terrible, and Moen is a good quality brand that should last. It wouldn't make sense to spend 50% less on something that is an inferior product. And for a rare finish like that, she is likely going to pay more regardless.

Thanks, justajane! Based on what everyone here has said, I think I'll avoid saying anything at this point. She's not in debt, it's not my money, vaya con dios. Not that I was intruding in the first place - she was asking for opinions on the price. If she brings it up again, I'll mention that the finish isn't as durable as other options, but otherwise stay out of it.
