found the most awesome retirement planning software for Canadians. FI Metrics is the only one I found that takes taxation into account, creating actual tax rates rather than the averages that most use. This is extremely important as tax rates when retired tend to be much lower than when working, so one can have less income and the same take home. An important distinction.

For example in the sample study you have more take home on less income because of lower tax rates.

I tried to download the software and found out it only runs on Windows 7 in XP mode. And that mode is no longer supported by Microsoft! That eliminates like 90% of the potential client base.

I would prefer to purchase and use RRIFmetic (FImetric) and did download Windows 7 Pro so I could use the XP shell function, but so far have not had success with getting the shell to function properly.  I know this should be resolvable, but it's not yet to the top of my list...

I just emailed the company asking about that, seems really strange that they would so limit their market. I'll update when I hear back

Edit: will try out Retireware it comes with a money back guarantee so willing to try it. As an aside I live in Germany and running numbers comparing retiring in Germany vs Canada.

OK got an answer

I am a 73 yearold one man operation.   I simply don't have the resources to migrate/rewrite the program.  Windows7 Pro has the 'XP mode' feature, or you can go to a used laptop store and buy a $200 XP laptop.   Otherwise, the only program which does the same recursive tax-based math is naviplan extended.   The problem is, it is a $1000 hit every year.


I'm not a software guy so any idea how much it would cost to migrate the program?

Highly dependent on how it was coded in the first place and what is causing the incompatibility.  It could be a one line change, a total rewrite, or anything in between.

update, my windows 7 is home so it won't run XP mode, so instead of upgrading and the hassle involved will simply buy an XP computer off ebay or amazon
