LifeHammer or Similar Tool Placement in Car?
« on: November 12, 2014, 06:42:46 AM »
COlady`s post prompted me to ask this here. I bought a Lifehammer, which is sitting in the upper portion of the console in our car. But the latch can easily open during an accident, tossing the LH about and rendering it useless.  I got some industrial strength velcro but I`m not sure where to secure the LH. I read that truckers velcro it in towards the floor near the driver`s seat. Has anyone done this? Does anyone use another tool like ResQMe which stays on your keychain in the ignition, or another device? Some of them are more expensive but if they do the job better it`s worth it.
.....for anyone unfamiliar, the Lifehammer can cut through a seatbelt and knock out a front seat window.

Can you velcro it to the parking brake handle?  Seat adjustment handle?

I have a ResQMe (similar premise) and it is hanging on the rearview mirror.

The website, however, shows it on a keychain.

Good tips. Thanks. The break handle may work well.

I hope so.  The point of these tools is that you can reach them while belted in tightly.  In a collision or other accident, the seatbelt may tension and you may not have the freedom of movement you normally do.  You want it where you can reach it, undo the velcro or whatever, and use it without having to unbuckle.

In certain hobby activities I sometimes participate in, we have to install an ABC fire extiguisher within reach of the belted driver.  So it's similar.  For maximum effectiveness, practice freeing it from the spot you mount it a few times.

You definitely don't want it to be flying around (possibly injuring you) and ending up out of reach in an accident.

How about next to your leg, below where the cupholders usually are between the passenger and driver seats. Kind of in front of where the driver's seatbelt buckles. Hopefully you got real industrial strength velcro. IIRC the best is the kind with tiny interlocking plastic pins and super strong rubbery adhesive on the backing. Hook and loop or larger interlocking dots don't work as well.
