Anyone try YouTube TV
« on: January 02, 2018, 12:41:22 PM »
Looking to finally ditch DirecTV - anyone tried it yet?  Seems like it is only in few states at the moment.  Could be my answer to sports with cutting the cord.

I tried it for 2 months.  I liked it but for me $35 a month was too much.  First month was free and second month I got a free Chromecast.

I am on a 7 day trial right now...so far so good.  Was able to watch the local hockey team on it with no issues last night.  Currently for me the only downside is you need to stream it through your computer & chromecast if you don't have a newer smart TV or compatible game console (check the full list on the site).  But it seems like they are working to get their platform on a lot more devices over the coming months.  That being said, the quality has been great so far and waaay cheaper than cable.  It would be nice if they could come to an agreement with amazon so I can stream through my fire tv, but other than that I think it is worth checking out.

Still has ads, so no thanks.

I hate paying a monthly fee so that I can watch advertising.  I will watch ads for free content, or I will pay to have no ads.  I will not pay to then have to watch ads.

We have it, although we mainly use it to watch local news (our HOA basically nopes antennas, which is what we used in Richmond).  We have a very new TV since the movers broke ours, so we can operate YTTV with the regular remote instead of a phone.

another alternative is sling tv. 20 bucks a month. Almost all the same channels as youtube. Espn and amc are mainly what i watch so it works out for me.

Wish i could watch local rockies baseball games, nuggets basketball games though...oh well. Wayyyyy better than paying close to 200 a month for cable!

Yep, just signed up. For those paying $35/month, have you thought about splitting it w/another couple? We share the subscription with another couple and split the cost, so pay $17.50/month. You can technically have up to 6 google accounts on your YouTubeTV account, but you're limited to three streams at any one time. So we figured we'd stick w/the two couples.

As for the Sling comparison, I had sling before. A couple of issues. One, DVR on sling is an extra $5 (free w/YouTubeTV). Two, if you're getting Sling to watch, say, college football, or the MLB playoffs (why I originally got Sling), you end up having to get the "Orange" and the "Blue" subscription so that you can get ESPN and FS1. Third, and most importantly in my book, I found the quality of Sling to be subpar. Multiple instances where Sling went down (and it wasn't me...I checked their twitter), sometimes for extended periods. Poor customer service/no response when I emailed/tweeted at them.

OH, one more thing about Sling. I use a Chromebook as my main computer. Can't stream Sling on a chromebook, at least not currently. Another strike against it.

Wait, an HOA can't do that, direct violation of FCC rules, see the article here with quotes and explanations: https://www.groundedreason.com/tv-antennas-fcc-hoa/

Great info ! thanks ! my wife is a big mlb fan. I imagine she would be up for the dvr and mlb playoffs. She has been talking about adding dvr to sling but I can't justify the cost. Its only 5 bucks but like you have said the service is far from perfect.

Thanks for the input.  I am going to give it a shot and see what happens.....would love to have this be the right solution.  I wish that Amazon and Google would be friends but that is likely not going to happen as they have started a war between each other that might never end (Amazon now refuses to sell Google products on their site after Amazon did an unauthorized workaround to keep Youtube on Fire products).  Likely to get worse before it gets better.
