Passive Income - Race from $10k to $40k per year
« on: October 08, 2019, 11:20:15 AM »
I graduated the $10k thread at the beginning of this year and was inspired by @arebelspy to create a continuation race. I will be tracking my trailing 1 year of dividends.

Because of the way my 401k used to be invested I don't have good data before 2014.

2014: $1,148
2015: $2,963
2016: $4,964
2017: $7,509
2018: $10,968

Trailing 1 year:
2019-Q1: $12,213
2019-Q2: $13,978
2019-Q3: $14,310

I'm in.  I joined the 10k thread mostly to encourage others as I was over the 10k mark from the beginning.  I'd like to see between $15-20,000 by FIRE.  My first goal was to cover the interest on my mortgage which I've done, next is to cover interest and principal and I hope to start my retirement being able to cover PITI for my housing.

My 401K account does not show dividends so that's out.  I need to add it up with my Roth IRA and my HSA included though.  I really only look consistently at my taxable brokerage because that is the only place I reallocate my dividends based on the market.  (My IRA and HSA are just automatic reinvest.)  I probably will wait until year end to total everything but my last quarter ending in October saw $2633.87 in my taxable account.

I didn’t join in the first one because a rough calculation put me already over the top. I’m too lazy to be exact and add up the trailing dividends from all my accounts but I noticed that my Vanguard statements all give me an estimated annual dividends value for each of my accounts, so I added those all up and I’m at $31,987. Wow, I knew I was over $20k but I’m surprised it’s that high. Awesome!

I only track Dividends in my taxable brokerage.  So 2019 saw me at $12,250.31.  Onward to next year.  My goal is to have my dividends be able to pay my mortgage at my FIRE date.

Excited to be joining in this race.

Total Passive Income from 2019 = $11,021.79 ($2,782.63 in Dividends and $8,239.16 in Gains)

2019 was a very good year so I'm not sure how 2020 will compare.

Welcome! I think most of us are counting dividends only, but you can track whatever makes you happy. If we included market gains I think we're around +$135k for 2019 while dividends were only ~$15k of that.

I noticed that some people just count dividends but I will continue to count the market gains since to me that is passive income, I also count the losses and I will make note of how much is dividends and how much is the market.

In any case I was a bit premature in my joining! I forgot to add into my calculations my year end contribution and employer match so my passive income is just shy of $10k for 2019 ($9,872.27 so close!) I'll be back!

2014: $1,148
2015: $2,963
2016: $4,964
2017: $7,509
2018: $10,968
2019: $16,256

Wow, surprisingly large fourth quarter dividends this year. Though now that I calculate it the percentage of invested assets is almost exactly the same as 2018 Q4. Compounding is impressive.

I'm joining!  something else for me to track.  :)   I'll just do the taxable account because it's easier

2nd Quarter:  $  3,261

This is a cool way to think about things.

Do you have a way to deal with index fund dividends? Those don't really show up because it's just the fund value I think (at least with fidelity).

All of our index fund dividends are shown in all accounts (Vanguard, Fidelity, TD, VALIC, etc.). Bond funds are monthly and the equity funds are quarterly. I am only investing in Vanguard funds so other funds could be different.

In my accounting software (GnuCash) I made a subcategory of Interest Income called "Dividends" so it makes it easy to separate from other income sources.

I think that must be it - my fidelity 401k is invested into Fidelities version of VTSAX so it doesn't show dividends the way VTSAX does.

It looks like FSKAX does distributions in April and December. I would expect the number of shares you own to increase when there are distributions/dividends if you have it set to reinvest. If you look at your transaction history and set the time period to the 4th Quarter 2020 does it not show anything? Mine (at Fidelity) looks like the attached screenshot:

I am not 100% sure how to track this.
I don't have dividend investments, but my old 401k lists a change in market value since the beginning of the year: Change in Market Value   $22,789.69
I think this is an awesome year until now, rate of return is 12.3% for this year....

Is this it?
If yes I need to add up the change in market value from my current 401k too?

If it is only about dividend income then forget it, will remove my post :).

Feel free to track whatever you want in this thread. I'm just doing dividends as that is easy to calculate for me. Net profit from rental properties would be another good source. Change in investment balance could work but I imagine it will fluctuate a lot more and doesn't represent as well what you could spend passively from those investments. You could also consider some sort of estimate like 2-4% of your average investment balance over the last year.

I will try to use what I posted above, the change in investment balance as that is what I have.
I am aware that it can be negative, I just hope I'll be able to stomach that when it comes :).

It's a bit nuts to me how much in dividends we're getting now.

Guess gotta keep investing!

I graduated the race to $10k a bit ago, so I'll join in!

2016: $2,367
2017: $3,270
2018: $6,456
2019: $8,329
2020: $8,034
2021: $14,465

This includes a pretty big capital gain distribution from one fund back in April (I count all cash my investments passively deposit in my account), so I don't know if this increase will hold/be indicative of future increases.

Graduating myself off the 0-10K thread.
My interest is in tracking consistent and reliable passive income. (I also have rental income, but don't choose to include it.) I track future rather than trailing dividends, updating the spreadsheet when I buy more shares or there is a dividend increase. Actual dividends for the year in the one account I track for taxes are below.

12 month Future dividends as of May 31, 2022

Inv Acct: 10738
TFSA:       6140
RRSP:       8209
Other:      1445
Total:      26551

Actual Paid, Inv Acct

2021     9480
2020     9655
2019     7600
2018     5269
2017     2425
2016     2205
2015     550
2014     230
2013     545

2021: $22,468

Trailing 1 year:
2022-Q1: $22,523
2022-Q2: $23,472

Relatively strong Q2 dividends helped offset the weak Q1

2016: $2,367
2017: $3,270
2018: $6,456
2019: $8,329
2020: $8,034
2021: $14,465

Trailing 12 months:
2022 Q1: $14,698
2022 Q2: $10,633
2022 Q3: $11,587

The Q1->Q2 drop was a relief as it means I didn't have an unexpectedly large capital gains distribution again, and now I get back to the hopefully slow and steady progress upward.

This is a perfect challenge, so looking forward to it...   Putting my FIRE plan's passive income goals into high gear first to cover our relatively low living expenses...
2021 - 11K
2022 - 21K
2023 - 42K goal
(the number for 2024 is 72K which easily covers living for both of us;  SO is still working to 2027 or so)

Working this with a combination of income generating assets in the after-tax account for first 10 or so FIRE years before social security & Medicare kick in... In MLPs, REIT funds and Muni-bonds to more than cover living expenses...   And a smaller % spread across Berkshire Hathaway B-shares, Vanguard S&P 500 index and a bit of international index to hedge vs. inflation and other surprises of life... Meanwhile, keeping all the IRA in growth for the middle stretch from mid-60s to early 80s. Here we go!

I've had a small passive income since probably 2008, but didn't start tracking until about 5 years ago. Here goes:

2017 - $5,902
2018 - $6,395
2019 - $6,872
2020 - $5,783
2021 - $3,043
2022 - $8,661
2023 - $9,278

I've had a good past 12 months or so with side hustles and hope to keep it around that level when I FIRE ($9k-15k), which shouldn't be too difficult, pandemics notwithstanding.

With these interest rates, passive income should be much easier to come by.  Heck, even our substantial 401k sum in Vanguard Wellesley is pulling in great income...and is rising ( currently 4.07% SEC yield...which is up quite a bit from just a few months ago ).  Even my savings account ( Sofi ) is pulling in 4% now.  Good times for passive income oriented investors!

Nice bump this quarter. I moved a lot of funds to money markets in anticipation of making a down payment and they are paying very good rates right now.
