Twisted Downshift
« on: December 30, 2023, 09:39:59 AM »
Maybe others have done this but thought I’d share my recent enlightenment…which in hindsight is obvious.

I downshifted (similar line of work) in 21, and found myself really bored and felt unappreciated, as I was, in my opinion, in no role to influence fun/important/exciting decisions.

In 2024 I will be downshifting into another role I have never been in also in an industry I’ve never worked before…with the intent of learning new skills for personal growth (apply to my own side hustle).

Anyway, instead of not learning anything new and just punching a clock, and trying to learn new skills in my free time and on my own…I feel I have persuaded a company to train me while providing an entry level income(which happens to be higher than my previous PT salary).

Downshift to learn new skills!

Interesting, I really like this take! I may be downshifting halfway through 2024. I've been looking at jobs, but since I am at a high level I am not really seeing too many that are exactly what I do/am an expert at. But there are many other things I am working on outside of my expertise where learning new skills could definitely come in handy.

I'm not sure why I haven't looked at it from this perspective, but I'm going to take your strategy into my job search. One of the things I've found I really like is finance from doing all this stuff for FIRE. But it is opposite from what I currently do, so I'd only be able to do entry level. As a non-mathy person this has really surprised me. I'd love to get better at Excel but have no reason to spend time on it. Anyone know of jobs that would allow me to learn this skill, but aren't too math heavy....seriously I suck at math. I've managed to figure out how to save and calculate the money stuff here on ishes, dashes, abouts, and arounds. I don't think I'll ever be one of those granular FIRE folk who have their budgets locked down. But I could get better at using Excel.

This is a great take, and it applies to everything! As extremely networked and hierarchical social animals, we have an overlay of "meaning" that is ascribed to every endeavor. If you are capable of noticing this layer and then avoiding a strong attachment to it, you have the freedom to play the game for your own purposes. (In your case, the meaning being "authority" you supposedly have given away by not striving for your job's particular brass ring.)

Of course, meaning is valuable, as are teamwork and relationships, and taboos, too, are necessary guidelines. It's just when we attach too strongly to very generic meanings/marketing that we find ourselves triggered, manipulated, or trapped. Manage your own reward and belief systems for maximum life enjoyment!
