Not sure how many of us there are in Orange County- but would anyone be interested in a meetup?
-
I'm up for a meetup. Would love to meet other like-minded people here. I'm in Irvine.
-
I'm in the San Gabriel Valley but within driving distance to Orange County. I'm in!
-
Sweet! I'm in Irvine. :)
Any suggestions on what people would like to do? HH, cheap eats, a hike, or... ?
-
I would love to meet up! Also in irvine (anyone with advice for saving $$ in rent while living in/near irvine, I'm all ears) hiking and cheap eats is always awesome :)
-
Cool! I generally end up hiking with the dog at Peters Canyon every weekend. Anyone interested?
-
Hiking sounds great. I have a 3-year old daughter though, so can only do easy hikes. Cheap eats is also cool if you guys would rather not hike with a kid.
-
Add one more to the Irvine list. I moved here about a year ago from Los Angeles. I'd definitely be up for a hike.
Mike
-
Awesome!
Peters Canyon (the non-hilly loop) and Back Bay are two easier options that I know of which would also work for younger children. Does anyone else have any other suggestions?
-
Peter's Canyon is definitely more kid friendly than my Mt. Baldy idea. Seems like we have at least 4 Irvine locals. Seems worth a meetup!
Mike
-
Count me in! I could use a relaxing hike for once..
Don't ask me for cheap eats though.. I frequent (cheap, unhealthy) buffets, and grocery stores...
Oh! Irvine Walmart french loaves were mispriced at $1 rather than the marked $1.49! Could put together our own sub-sandwiches in pure Mustachian DiY fashion ^^

Cheap eats can be healthy... sometimes. When I think of cheap eats, I think of yummy ethnic food that's shared family-style. But bringing food is definitely the healthiest and cheapest. :)
How about next weekend or the following? Now that I think about it, maybe sometime May 17-18 might be better... wouldn't want to interfere with anyone's Mother's Day weekend plans. I'm flexible.
Let me know what you guys think!
-
May 17-18 works. Peter's Canyon?

Mike
Works for me! I'm down the street, so I'll be walking over if that's where we all end up :)

Peters Canyon has multiple trails, but the one I'm thinking of is mostly flat and should be a fairly easy walk, even for little ones. :). Open to other suggestions, too, if there's another spot that works better.
-
Darn, we'll be on vacation May17 through Memorial Day. I hope we can make the next one. You guys can do a harder hike if I'm the only one with a kid.

Oh no! Well, we haven't heard from the others yet so we'll see if May 17 even works.
Regardless, have a great vacation!! :)
-
I'm in OC too (HB area) but I'll also be gone then too (leaving ASAP to get out of this relentless heat!) so can't make it. But some suggestions are HB Central Park. The west side (between Goldenwest and Edwards) has some nice tree covered walking paths (blessed shade!), a lake, a nature center, a great dog park, a disc golf course, stables and dirt horse paths (no shade there but close to the ocean so cooler usually), picnic areas as well as a restaurant (Kathy May's In The Park) but too expensive for most mustachians, and play area for the wee ones (and lots of bathrooms for the "wee" ones also :-)!). The east side (between Goldenwest and Gothard) also has a lot of walking paths, another restaurant, the big Central Park Library and some other things. Both sides of the park have tons of free parking. There's also the Bolsa Chica Wetlands across from the Bolsa Chica State Park Beach entrance. Free parking there too (but not at the state beach) and dirt trails. No shade though but a bathroom and visitors center off Warner and PCH. Also Mason Park or Turtle Rock in Irvine (lots of trails in the hills behind Turtle Rock at Bonelli) and free parking too. Make sure and post here where you'll meet up just in case I'm around!
-
Thanks for the great suggestions Spartana!
We'll keep posting here and hopefully you'll be able to make one of the meetups. I was thinking of doing something that's both dog and kid-friendly, so if you bring your dog (I think you mentioned having one in a different post) that would be great! :)
-
My favorite hiking spots I've found down here so far are Laguna Canyon, Crystal Cove, and, further away, trails in the San Gabriels. Back when I lived in Los Angeles there was good hiking to be had up in Malibu (Sandstone Peak, Temescal), and the other side of the San Gabriels (Devil's Punchbowl).
Mike
-
Crystal Cove and Bolsa Chica are great hikes. I also like Silverado Canyon. It's really surreal driving from Irvine to Silverado.
This is one of my favorite sites for finding hiking spots:

What about doing a picnic around 6.30pm on one of the little grassy parks on Ocean Ave in Corona del Mar? It's a perfect time to watch the sunset. It' perfect for the little ones to run around (our son is 2).
-
I was starting to think I couldn't make this, but I am free at 6:30 on Saturday! i work until 4:30.
-
Picnic idea sounds good. I haven't been to Corona del Mar yet.
Mike
-
A CDM picnic sounds fun!
-
Great! We could do Saturday, 5/17 if that works for everybody? We live a few blocks away so can pick a specific spot and let everybody know.
-
The 17th works for me!
-
Yep, 5/17 still works for me. Let's plan for that!
Mike
-
Awesome! Let me know what I can bring for the picnic :)
-
Great! We are looking forward to meeting everyone!
Directions: Let's plan to meet at the little grassy park next to Ocean Avenue between Marguerite Ave and Larkspur Ave. There's plenty of free parking, and it's a very bikable area.
What to bring: I'd recommend everybody bring (1) a blanket/sheet to sit on, (2) food, drinks, utensils. I think for this first round without knowing exactly who is coming it may be too hard to coordinate different people bringing different elements of the meal, so many everybody just bring food/drinks for themselves? I'm sure some extra desert or drinks wouldn't go over wrong either.
Timing: We will get there a bit before 6.30. Sunset is at 7.30.
From our end, it will be me, Annie, and our son Jack (2.5 years). See you soon!
-
Okay I'm going to try really hard to make it! I'm coming from the San Gabriel Valley, if anyone else is coming from the area.
-
Anyone here read doctorhousingbubble? It's a blog that focuses on California real estate and its tendency to have much more exaggerated boom and bust cycles on average compared to other locales. Lots of local data on Irvine in particular:

I had stopped reading this thread when I thought it was gonna be a hike. I'm not up for a hike but I can sure do a picnic in a park. Especially if my dog is welcome. I live in Torrance, so it's a bit of a drive.
-
There are plenty of dogs at the park, so that should be no problem. Assuming it's the kind of dog that can handle being around little kids, of which there are also plenty around there :)
-
OK, I'll plan to be there.
-
Might not be able to make it, Last minute plans are cropping up.. and I was really looking forward to running around with the doggies and playing with the kiddens..
-
We look forward to seeing everybody there! We will be the couple with the very chatty blond toddler.
-
I'll be the lady with the black labrador retriever.
-
Looking forward to it!
I'll be the short Asian girl with a bouncy Border Collie.
-
I'm in!
Look out for a brown-haired middle height, middle build white guy, probably in jeans and a T shirt.
Mike
-
I might be able to make it as I am back in town. Tall long haired blonde woman with shaggy bangs and with a little shaggy-haired blonde terrier (oh my God I just realized I look like my dog!)
-
Is this the area if you Google Map it?
3225 Ocean Blvd, Corona Del Mar, CA 92625
Mike
-
Family emergency came up and I won't be able to make it. Sorry guys.

Looks right to me. If it's wrong we can be wrong together.
-
I'm in. I'm the Asian girl, wearing a disgustingly pink dress (:
-
Well, it was very nice, but not what I expected.
I thought it should take me about 45 minutes to get there. Traffic was worse than I thought, so it took about an hour. When I got there it was really crowded. There was a large wedding party taking pictures, as well as a lot of other people enjoying the view.
I walked up and down the park, waiting to recognize someone, or for someone to recognize me with my black lab. Nope. So I sat down on the grass and watched the people. After a while Tad showed up, without wife and child. Said the toddler was sleeping and they didn't want to wake him. I could understand that.
We chatted for a while, wondering if we were the only ones to come. Tad suggested we walk the area again and see if anyone looked familiar. We did, and they didn't. So we sat down and started our picnic. Then Mike showed up and joined the picnic. And pretty soon Tad's wife and delightful toddler arrived.
At that point we must have been quite recognizable, so I stopped watching for any late arrivals. We had a nice time, sharing information and watching the toddler toddle.
My dog took a liking to Mike, and got a lot of petting.
it was heavily overcast by the time sunset was scheduled. We couldn't see the sun but we pretended. As it got dark we packed up our things and went home.
No idea where all the others were.
-
Agreed, it was a good, low key way to spend an early Saturday evening, and Tad picked a really amazing spot.
I hear you about the 405, Donna. Even on late nights on the weekend it can be an hour or more to drive from LA to OC since that's when lanes tend to get closed for maintenance.
I need to get a dog...
Mike
-
Sounds like fun, I'm bummed I missed it.
I'll definitely have to go to the next one, whenever it is.
-
Ditto - Annie, Jack and I enjoyed meeting you guys! Looking forward to hanging out again.
-
Oops missed it. To be honest I totally forgot about it until just now. DOH! Maybe next time.
-
I'm still pretty bummed I had to skip the first meetup- would anyone like to schedule something for the month of June?
-
I'd be interested in a June meetup since I couldn't make the first one.
-
I could do a June meetup if it wasn't the weekend of 6/14.
Mike
-
Great! Maybe the last weekend of June, if that works for people?
-
We should be around the weekend of 6/28. Beach?
-
I'd be up for the beach again. 6/28 works for me.
Mike
-
We should be around the weekend of 6/28. Beach?
Either a park in CDM or the beach proper would be awesome :)
-
I'm in HB too. I might show up 👍
-
I don't know if 6/28 works, but I at least want to get on this thread.

I read that blog occasionally, but tend to read another that is similar in tone called www.OCHousingNews.com regularly. The blogger used to write for Irvine Housing Blog, so he posts lots of Irvine data, in addition to other cities.

Nice find, Poorman, thanks!

Cool! I didn't know The Poorman was a Mushtacian. When will they bring you back on Love Line? You and Dr. Drew started it ;)
-
Wow... You're the second person that got the reference. I seriously didn't expect anybody to know who Poorman was when I created this account. If you know that Poorman started Love Line then you probably also know that he got his start by writing a book, "Poorman's Guide to Dining for Under $6" or something to that effect. He was also writing a column for the OC Weekly a year ago called "Cheap Eats in the OC for Under $6", so I thought what better example of frugal living than the great Poorman!
-
Now if you can just mix frugal living / investment advice and bikinis you just might have a hit show! :)
-
Oh The Poorman is known far in wide in the OC. Probably LA too. Even us girls know him, we just aren't as enthralled with his show as the guys are for some strange reason :-)!
-
I'm still open for a meetup this weekend, as long as everyone else is still available.
-
I'd still be up for a meetup. Saturday or Sunday afternoon/early evening by the beach in Corona del Mar? It's Tad's spot from last time but it's a winner.
Mike
-
I'm busy Sunday, but I'd be up for a Saturday meetup in CDM.
-
How about Saturday at around 6:30 PM? The park is a nice place to watch the sunset. Last time we all just brought a picnic dinner.
Mike
-
I'm flexible and can meet during Saturday morning/afternoon. If it's just the three of us, how about somewhere closer, like Costa Mesa or Irvine?
I'd be up for a hike through the Back Bay or something like that.
-
I'm also flexible as to time and place. Might just be us three. I'd definitely be up for a hike.
Mike
-
I'll check in the am and see if anyone's still up for a meetup tomorrow- even if it's just three of us, could still be fun!
-
Good morning all! How about we try for a meetup today at the Back Bay in Costa Mesa at 11? It's an easy hike, and pretty, too.
There's a park off of Mesa with free parking (if you see a house with chickens in the front, you're in the right place). I'll be the short Asian girl with the bouncy Border Collie sporting a red bandanna (the dog, not me).
Let me know if you guys are interested!
-
I could do that. Do you have a street address or something to Google Map it with?
Mike
-
2609 Mesa Drive, Newport Beach.
Just park along the street anywhere. See you guys soon!
-
Awesome recap of the day, singlemomdebt- and love the photos!
It was great meeting you and Mike, and had fun wandering through the Back Bay. FYI: it took a couple baths, but Zoe is finally a white dog again. :)
Looking forward to the next meetup!
-
Agreed, that was a great time. Thanks for the great suggestion on the hike, sunny!
Mike
-
I am moving to OC in September to start at UC Irvine. I'm just popping in to say hi and keep my ear open for future MMM meetups after that point.
Hope to meet some of you in a few months!
-
Welcome, prefrontal!
Where are you moving from? Orange County is an interesting beast.
Mike

I live in Portland right now. I think it is going to be some serious culture shock, outside of school/work.
My TA stipend will be the same as my current yearly pay...but cost of living is going to be so much higher! Esp. housing. I don't own a car and am not planning on buying one, just have to get a room in the right place to be near a bike path that heads to the university, shouldn't be too hard.
-
Yep, going to be a pretty big culture shock coming from Portland! I came from the Midwest about 18 years ago and I still get shocked by the culture here. :)
Getting around in Irvine by bike is very easy. It's the most bikeable city I've lived in.
Mike
-
Welcome prefrontal!
Like Mike, I still experience culture shock here, and I've lived here most of my adult life.
Looking forward to meeting you in a September MMM meetup!
-
I'm sorry I missed this recent one, it sounded like fun.
Hopefully I'll be free for the September meetup, or sooner.
-
We were thinking of a July meetup- possibly at the Newport Beach Public Library, if anyone's interested.
-
If you guys are interested in a Library meet up, check out the beautiful large Huntington Beach Central Park Library. It's in a great park, nice paths to walk, and also has a small coffee shop inside (amongst the 4 story tall floor to ceiling windows, waterfalls, fountains, and even a little pond). Lots of casual seating as well as a theatre, small art gallery and also a gift shop. And the park is very nice too! http://www.huntingtonbeachca.gov/Government/Departments/Library/hours_location/central_library.cfm
http://www.yelp.com/biz/huntington-beach-central-library-huntington-beach
I won't be around in July either but enjoy where ever you go!
-
I have to agree, the HB library is also great and in a awesome location.
NBPL offers free library cards to any CA resident, which is a nice bonus, and they have one of the best selections of books that I've ever seen.
I'm up for pretty much any location though. What date in July works best for everyone?
-
I just moved to Dana Point and I would highly recommend the San Clemente Beach Trail. :)
Newport wasn't really my scene, but I'd be willing to drive there to socialize.
-
Welcome tj!
Where did you move from? How are you enjoying Dana Point so far? I don't go to South County often, but I've taken the dog to the pier a few times and had coffee there. It's nice.
-

Before Dana, I was living in Newport for 6 months and before that I lived in the Inland Empire for 3.5 years. (....that's now a rental property...)
I am enjoying Dana Point much more than Newport Beach - in Newport, I felt like everything around me (including my apartment) was owned by Irvine Company, so I saw a lot of the same cookie cutter chain restaurants and stores in same looking shopping centers. In Dana Point, for slightly less $$ I get to live right on PCH and a nice 1/2 mile walk to the beach or harbor. In Newport i was a good 3 miles from the beach (it was basically Irvine). I feel like it's a lot less congested than CDM and Laguna.
Of course, I'm probably spending more in the end now with a longer commute and dealing with toll roads - but I enjoy my free time much more. :)
-
Yep, you described Irvine pretty well. :) I've been living in Irvine for the past year (really close to work and makes it bikeable) but wouldn't mid if it had more character. Not that I'll be around, but it would be interesting to see Irvine in a couple hundred years, when It's had time to develop some sense of history and character.
Mike
-
Happy July everyone! Would anyone be interested in a meetup sometime next week?
-
Agreed, weekends are best. Does the 19th work for anyone?
-
Weekends work best for me too. The 19th sounds good.
Mike
-
Bummer you can't make it, Chippewa!
Mike, I'm still planning on going to the Newport Beach Public library on Saturday to check out some books. If you're interested or available at a particular time to meet up, let me know! Same goes for anyone else that might be interested! :)
-
Hi all! I was thinking of scheduling a half-day hike sometime in August- would anyone be interested?
I was inspired by a coworker that's planning on hiking all 15 peaks in San Gorgonio wilderness. :)
-
Awesome!
For fun, here's the 15 peaks plan:

2. Lake Peak, 10,161
3. Zanhiser Peak, 10,037

First post! Hi everyone, I just moved to La Mirada/Buena Park area from AZ and I would love to go to a future OC meetup. I'm currently limited to just my bicycle, so it should make things interesting but I'm up for it :)
John
-
Hi John! How are you enjoying CA so far?
I'm sure we'll be able to arrange a meetup that's bikable for you, or do a carpool :)
-
It's been great here so far. It seems like there is so much to visit/experience. And coming from AZ, this weather is awesome. :)
That would be great!
-
Hi all! I was thinking of Saturday, August 16th or 30th for a meetup hike. Do either of those days work for everyone? Suggestions for hiking locations are welcome!
-
Hiya,
I'll be free on the 16th if you're still game. That San Gorgonio list is pretty intimidating though!
I'd also be up for hiking / biking.
Could hit up the beach, go along some urban trails, or a simple picnic at the park
I need a break from all this office work. ugh. And my usual coworker hiking groupies are wimping out on me this weekend.
EDIT: I live in the Costa Mesa area, but I'm open for anything.
-
LOL... That San Gorgonio list IS insane. But my coworkers that are doing it are firefighters, marathoners, etc... I doubt I'd be able to do the peaks without a lot more training.
I'm up for meeting on the 16th! Maybe a hike and bring lunch? I'm in Irvine, and flexible as to location. Back Bay, Silverado Canyon, Peters Canyon are standbys, but I'm always up for a new hiking location!
-
Very cool, I never knew about Peter's Canyon.
Here's my plan for the day, feel free to show up at any leg of the journey:
Start at Citrus Ranch Park (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Citrus+Ranch+Park/)
Hike 2 miles up through Cedar Grove Park (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Cedar+Grove+Park/).
do a circuit through Peter Canyon's Trail (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Peters+Canyon+Trail,+North+Tustin,+CA+92705/) circling up around the north reservoir and then back south the east side of the park.
If I feel adventurous, tack on another quick detour up to Irvine Regional Park
Meander my way back to the start. Stop for lunch somewhere along the way.
Start Time: 11:00
I'll start checking in here as I get to various checkpoints. Whole thing should take half the day.
I hope to see some of you along the way.
EDIT: Cancel that, it's not a meetup if I dictate last minute. I'll save this for another day
Would anyone like to meet up near(er) to the area?
-
Sorry, too spontaneous on short notice. I didn't plan to not have a plan so late in the day..
Would anyone like to meet up at Back Bay or somewhere nice and close by?
-
Actually, Peter's Canyon sounds perfect. Citrus Ranch is, literally, a 2-minute walk from my house. If we could meet at Citrus Ranch at 11-11:30, that'd work.
Let me know!
-

I'll let you know when I get to Citrus Ranch.
I'm here and totally not late..
-
The meetup was fun. An 8-mile hike in 90+ weather was challenging, but the company was good. Unfortunately, the dog wasn't too crazy about the heat so she kept balking. Sorry about that, Shor! :/
Chippewa, I'm still up for the 30th. I was thinking of John's Meadow in San Gorgonio, but you need an adventure pass and advance reservations (I have an Adventure Pass we can use). Or if there's another hike you're interested in, let me know!
-
Anyone interested in a September picnic? I'm in Irvine. We could keep it simple and do the same thing as last time so others, like myself, who missed out get a second chance? Open either way!
-
Yea that sounds good, traffic would be light on a Saturday, I hopefully would be able to make it out.
The oregonians are having one every month! we gotta outdo them.
Sadly my only day off this month is 9/20.
-
Sat 9/20 works for me! Anyone else?
-
Bummer! I'm leaving on the 19th for vacation. :(
Have fun guys!
-
I'd be up for a 9/20 meetup. I live in Costa Mesa and plan to bike to Irvine, so hopefully somewhere near a bike path.
-
Sunnyca - we can always do 9/27? Anyone have a preference?
-
I won't be back until 10/3, unfortunately. But I'll be sure to attend an October meetup! :-)
-
Did I miss the meetup???
I'm from LA but I am new here and I'm not sure how active the LA mustachians are. I'm 26 and just got hired for my first job after grad school... ready to start getting rich!!!
-
I'd be down for another meetup sometime. Haven't been to one in a while.
Mike
-
Me too! What day works best for everyone? Hike or picnic?
-
October's open for me too. How about 10/11 or 10/18?
-
I can make 10/18.
-
Afternoon of 10/18?
-
I'm flexible on the 18th, so either morning or afternoon is fine. I think it'll depend on everyone's schedule and what we end up doing.
-
I'll be free on the 18th as well. Looking forward to it.
-
I should be available then but i can't do a hike. If there's a picnic I'd like to be included.
-

Of course! We could even maybe do a simple potluck.
Everyone, any suggestions as to location?
-
Ok, here's an odd suggestion. I will have posession of my new 580 sq ft place in Seal Beach Leisure World by then and we could have a picnic/potluck there and you could all help me decide how to furnish it.
And some of you might want to look around LW. It's quite a place.
One problem... no outside dogs allowed in LW.

Sounds great to me! Thank you for offering to host!
Maybe to make the potluck easier, how about something themed- like a taco salad or sandwich/salad potluck?
Re: dogs... thanks for the caveat. Zoe will be happy staying at home with a stuffed Kong. :)

Won't be in town so can't make it but wanted to give you a heads up that my Mom lived in Leisure World too (cool place!) and it might not be the best place for a meet up because of the gate/guarded entrance and the lack of guest parking - especially on weekends as they always seemed to be taken. Just something to consider when making your plans. But there is parking outside near the shops. Have Fun!

Have Fun!
The guards at the gate are no problem. I just have to tell them in advance who's coming. And there's lots of parking available in my area.
I got my keys yesterday, and spent the afternoon slopping deodorizer all over everything (former owner had a dog, got senile and forgot to walk the dog). I've met most of the neighbors and they all seem ok.
I'm really looking forward to some good suggestions about how to furnish the place. With a place that small it's gonna be a bit of a challenge.
I can supply dishes and drinks and you can bring something to share. I'll probably even have enough chairs to go around.
-
Hey Stachies! I have to back out of the 18th. Dr. called me in for a follow-up appt. w/radiology. hopefully all is well, but family coming down from No. CA. to hold my hand. Have a superb time!
So bummed you won't be there.
Good luck on your recheck/X-rays, hopefully all will be well.
-

Sorry to hear that. I was looking forward to meeting you in person. I've been following your blog and I feel like I know you. Hope things go well.

Hi Chippawa - Hoping everything turns out OK. Thinking of you and wishing you the best of luck!
-
Congrats on the new place! Does every LW place come with an organ still?! I'd play on that thing all day till it drove my grandma nuts. ;). Haha
I'll be at the Zac Brown concert on the 18th (who ever that is) but hopefully can show up on another date
-
Hi all! Just checking in to see if the meetup on the 18th is still on, and if so, are we still doing a potluck-type event?
-
As far as I'm concerned it's still on, at my place. Yes, potluck.
How many should I expect?
Edit: And what time works for you? Any time is good for me.
-
Afternoon maybe? What works for everyone?
-
Counting down, 2 days to go.
You can't just show up, you have to let me know in advance so I can tell the gate guards to expect you. I need to give them your name but it doesn't hafta be your real name. Some of you (FuckRx for example) should probably use a more likely name. First name only. You can PM me your info and I can PM back the address and directions.
I hope you can all come. I just spent $4.00 (yes, four dollars) for 4 liters of soft drinks. Can't let my hard earned dollars be wasted. I also bought some chips but I can't be trusted with chips so who knows if any will be left by Saturday.
I also have 6 plastic chairs there now, and the nice lady next door says I may borrow some folding chairs from her if anybody shows up.
Afternoon is fine with me. Or maybe noon would be best, since we're having food?
-
Ended up with the flu last week and wasn't able to make the meetup. :(
Short notice, but would anyone be interested in a meetup this Saturday or Sunday? I was thinking of something easy and fairly central, like the Back Bay.
-
I'm pretty free this weekend and could do for a hike.
Mike
-
Sweet!
I just picked the Back Bay for now to make things easy for anyone who might be interested (since I know some people are looking for options within biking distance of Costa Mesa), but if anyone has other suggestions for cool hikes, chime in!
-
I have somehow become obsessed with meetup.com hiking groups. I have hikes booked on both Sat (Chantry Flats) & Sun (Aspen Grove to Fish Creek). Have fun this weekend.
ps: radiologist freaked me out. but all is good & healthy.
Glad to hear everything went well at the radiologist's! Have fun at the hiking meetups!
-
Back Bay would work. That was fun last time.
I found a good hike in Crystal Cove that was free. Instead of entering the park and paying to park on the Laguna Beach side you drive up to the end of Ridge Park Road in Newport Beach and park at Coastal Peak Park. Plenty of parking and totally free to park there.
Mike
-
Nice! When I go to Crystal Cove, I usually just park at the shopping center and walk over. But parking at Coastal Peak Park sounds much better.
-
Coastal Peak Park is good. It starts you on the opposite side of the park from the Laguna Beach side so it's something different. If you wanted a long hike you could always hike to the oceanward side. Not sure what the dog policy is there though.
Mike
-
Just checked- not dog friendly. :(
Oh well, I don't go to Crystal Cove much anyway. It's a bit limiting, since only two of the trails are dog friendly and they're vigilant about making sure that the dog policies are enforced.
-
Got it. Let's see if we can try for next week then. Maybe we can get a group going if we have a whole week to plan. :)
Mike
-
Maybe we can get a group going if we have a whole week to plan. :)
Mike
Here's hoping! Maybe next Sunday at the Back Bay- any takers?

Hesitant yes. I need to check my schedule.....
lol which really as only one activity on it every weekend, but I might have to go up to LA on Sunday. Need to confirm and get back to you...
-
Yay!! Even a hesitant yes is better than "no." :)
-
Confirmed yes, I am free and available this Sunday. Hope to see you all there!
-
YAY! Now we just need more people to join us!
What time were you thinking? I just remembered that the time change is this Sunday.
-
Sunday's open for me. I'm free any time. Yep, Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday morning. If you miss the time change you'll be an hour late!
Mike
-
YAYAYAY!
Now if we can get at least one more person to come, we'll have a record-setting four people at a OC MMM meetup! :) Chippewa, Spartana, surfhb, prefrontal, and others... any interest?
What do you guys think about meeting at 9? I was also thinking of going to the Newport Beach Public Library afterward. If anyone's interested in coming along, that'd be awesome.
-
where at?
-
where at?
We were thinking of the Back Bay- it's easy to find and it was pretty fun last time.
-
Will be out of town but thanks for the invite - sounds fun!
We'll miss you! Hope you can make it to the next one!
-
Where's the meeting spot again?
Mike
-
Thanks. I'll definitely be around by end of Nov so maybe then. Plus Mike owes me a huge lobster dinner from the trendiest and most expensive restaurant in the OC. And he said he'd pay :-)!
Haha, nice!!!
-
The location's 2609 Mesa Drive, Newport Beach.
Does 9am work for everyone, or should we change the time?
-

Spartana's rarely available. I'll never be able to make good on it.
;)

9:00 AM works for me. Since Daylight Savings Time ends that morning it will "feel" like 10:00 AM.
Mike

Looking forward to seeing you guys tomorrow!

Great meetup on Sunday! <------------ awesome writeup of entire event
Mike
I see you left out the part where you rassled a badger in to the washing machine!
Meeting minutes:
We met up somehow or another at the trail head for a simple 2ish mile hike. Zoe (the dog) kept trying to lead us right in to the muddy waters and splattered us with a few run-bys. The sky was wide open and the bay had a delicious boggy smell. Lots of people / bikes were on the dirt trail, so obviously we waded off the path in to the mud.
Next, we piled up in to Sunnyca's vehicle and took a field trip to the Newport Beach Public Library where we were quickly indoctrinated in to the ranks of newly minted library card holders. We eyed some creepy rabbit statues, browsed around the double story library, definitely worth checking out this place again.
Finally ended the day with some super exclusive Level 2 Korean food aka hotpot
This meetup we:
- Tied the going record for OC meetup attendees: 3
- Devised a plan to force people to show up to OC Meetups.. apparently it hinges on knowing where we live.... Which in hindsight is clearly why two of us were just herded to the library! I knew the free library card has an ulterior motive!
- Also, we poked fun of Asian drivers.. Fully Justified *ahem* (2/3 of us were Asian, so it was totally okay)
- Edged the fine line of legality by parking in an unauthorized area! Living the danger life! :O
In conclusion, Great meetup on Sunday!
-
Thanks for the awesome summary, Shor! Mike, you're fired from the position of OC MMM secretary. ;)
Indeed, great meetup on Sunday. It appears that my plan to increase OC MMM meetup attendance by discovering the addresses of local MMM-ers via encouraging (forcing?) them to sign up for a library card wasn't quite as subtle as I thought. Darn it.
One slight edit to Shor's summary- we poked fun at Asian *female* drivers. Which, much to my chagrin, was fully justified.
-
Yep, it was a great time. Shor's summary was excellent, I can't improve upon it. Next time we'll have to see if we can break our record of three people. It seems like that should be doable.
Mike
-
A pho meetup would be pretty Mustachian. It's cheap and delicious. Maybe that's our next meetup.
And the Newport Beach Library is a gem. Thanks to Sunny for introducing it to us!
Mike
-
what's the badger rasselin'? Enquiring minds want to know.
At the time, while having Level 2 Korean food, we were discussing Mike's Journal or lack thereof. To which we determined that all of the existing MMM journals were quite interesting, active, exciting. Mike admitted that his journal, if he ever made one, would be completely dull and boring by comparison: 'did laundry today... worked...slept....'
The answer, we surmised was that he had to spice things up to make his Journal entries more interesting and draw in attention! i.e. Rassled a badger out of the laundry room. It would inevitably end with each journal entry being more extravagant and extreme than the last, but no one would know that it didn't happen that way because "the Internet". To which we pointed out that Sunny would know...and I would know...
So now we're on the lookout for Mike to make either a very boring Journal, or an extreme, danger-filled MMM adventure Journal!

Another fun local meetup idea: archery. $22 for an hour's worth of fun:
http://www.ocarchery.com/store-info.html
Mike
-
Archery sounds awesome!
Another fun meetup option might be indoor rock climbing:
http://www.senderoneclimbing.com/classes/
$30 for the equipment, intro class, and day pass. Or $20 for day pass and equipment rental.
-
Indoor rock climbing is a blast. Back when I lived up in LA a group of us went every week to Rockreation in Santa Monica.
Another winner: curling lessons. Twenty bucks. And yes. I did this:
http://www.occurling.com/LearnToCurl/
Mike
-
Curling looks fun! Never heard of it before.
Sender One is awesome. I went once and have been trying to go back since, but haven't found anyone interested in going.
Sounds like we'll need to start throwing around dates for the next meetup!
-
If I were asked to sum up my life the best way would be to describe it as being broken into two eras: the time where I though curling was dumb and deserving of mockery and the time I thought curling was a highly skilled sport that required physical fitness. The event that defined the two eras was the time I actually tried it.
The guy throwing the curling stone is so far away from the target that the field is very foreshortened, making it difficult to know for sure how much force to use to land the stone, and that's assuming the playing field is clear and not littered with other people's stones. The two guys sweeping aren't just sweeping, they're pushing down hard and scrubbing furiously with their arm and chest muscles to friction melt the ice enough to make the stone glide farther (or conversely they stop sweeping to let the stone slow down on unmelted ice). While they're doing that they're jogging along on ice trying not to slip. The guy at the end is the only one with a clear view of the target, and he's shouting to the two sweeper guys, telling them what he thinks they should do.
Mike
-
All these activities sound fun!
There's also doing a half-day hike somewhere in the San Gabriels or San Bernardino mountains. Whatever activity drums up the most interest...
-
I've rented kayaks at the Newport Beach Aquatic Center before, that was fun. That's basically the same place we've gone hiking before: the Newport Harbor back bay.

I had no idea they had curling down here! I need to try this.

Anyone up for an end of year meetup/hike? How's next weekend look for people?
Mike
-
Count me in! Next weekend works for me.
-
Trying for another meetup... anyone interested in a hike or potluck sometime in the next few weeks?
-
Interested.
Yay!
-
Either / Or idea sounds fine with me. You guys are more than welcome at my place if you want to BBQ :) Im in HB

promise to wear underwear?
-
Yes.....if it will make everyone happy :)
-
December kind of got away from me... sorry about that.
Anyone up for a January meetup?
-
Cool! How about a hike on January 17 or 18?
-
Sounds good.....Count me in please
-

Awesome! What day works for better for you, the 17th or the 18th?
-
Either day is good for moi.
Cool! Is there a particular hike you're interested in checking out?
-
Either day is good.....its a 3 day weekend for me. I'm not a hiker but Silverdo Canyon was always nice.

It's a three-day weekend for me, as well- so either day works.

Haven't tried this hike before, but it looks interesting.
Chippewa, I'll let you make the call as to which day/time works best. :)
-
Lets do Sunday at 11am at the parking lot near the firehouse at the end of Silverdo Canyon Rd?
See you then...
Eric
EDIT: Here's the map to the trail. Its actually not at the end of Silverdo Cyn Rd.

Works for me. See you guys then! :)
-
I'm easy and either time works for me.
Parking at the site may be crowded. If you guys want, we can meet at my place and carpool from there. Up to you.
-
I work evenings so 9:30 is like 4am to you guys.....but I will rally and be there at 9:30 :)
Or are we going to be good little MMMs and carpool?
-
Just joining the thread... I can't do early either (coming from SFV and night worker) but maybe next one!
-
Just joining the thread... I can't do early either (coming from SFV and night worker) but maybe next one!
Welcome to the thread, Spondulix! What days/hours/activities work best for you? That way, we can plan for the next one, or modify next week's meetup.
Nothing's completely set in stone yet! :)
-
Thanks! I love hiking (I see you guys have done that a couple times). Weekends are good, anytime after noon is best. :)
-
Chippewa, surfhb, what do you think about moving back our hike time so that Spondulix can join us?
Maybe we can also consider doing a hike that's a bit closer to Chippewa and Spondulix, if she'do like to join us next week. Just a thought. :)
-

Yes....I can do that.
-
That'd be great for me, too! I'm fine with keeping the date the same (Sun, but noon) if that's good for everyone else. No idea where is good to meet, though...
-
Sunday at noon works for me. I think if we maybe meet somewhere a little more central (maybe closer to Chippewa) that would work? What do you think?
Chippewa, any good hiking locations around there you can suggest?
-
Sweet! I'd be fine with Chantry Flats, looks fun!
-
Sounds good! I'll be bringing Zoe, so I'm happy to volunteer my car for the carpool.
-
That would totally work for me! Just let me know where to meet (and I'll PM someone my number)
-
And.... data from Sunday's meetup :)
-
Any other Irvine families here with small kids (I have a 4.5 year old daughter) who want to get together for a small BBQ or potluck? My husband and I have had a tough time finding like-minded friends since moving here. We would love to meet other folks here with kids for inexpensive outings.
-
Sunnyca that's awesome!!
-
Hi all! Just checking in to see if/when anyone would be interested in another meetup- hiking, Indian food, or otherwise. :)
-
Hi Kids
Can I come? I'm also planning a camping trip on the backside of Yoesemite once the Tioga Pass opens up. About 2 months I'm guessing....its gonna be awesome
E
-
Following.
I'm in the area, but not that mobile (no car or bike...yet!). But, I want to go to at least one of these meetups in the next few months.
-
My schedule's pretty open, so anytime works for me.
WhoopWhoop, we can probably meet somewhere closer to you and carpool, which is what we did last time.
What activity is everyone interested in this time?
-
My schedule's pretty open on the weekends. I might be up for something.
Mike
-
How about this Sunday or next Saturday? Which date works best for everyone?
-
It's ironic that the worlds most un-mustachian part of the planet has the most active thread on this site.
Beach volleyball or bike ride from HB to Newport
-
How about this Sunday or next Saturday? Which date works best for everyone?
How does your employer feel about you scamming MMM on company time? Haha
-

AHEM. I'm actually off today (four day weekend for me!). I would *never* goof off on company time. Never. ;-)
-
Volleyball.. shudders. Haha. Not my sport. Sun, works. Next Sat., I bow out.
Sunday works well for me. Like Chippewa, not a volleyball fan (too uncoordinated).
Hike and a meal?
-
I would be in for Sunday,
Fortunately for my employer, I DO goof off while code is busy compiling...
Perfectly valid reason, and it keeps me sane...
-
I could do Sunday.
Mike
-
Yay! Sunday it is.
It'll be kind of warm that day, so how about sticking somewhere closer to the coast, like Crystal Cove? Any other suggestions are welcome, too.
-
Crystal Cove might work. Where do you park around there?
Mike
-
Crystal Cove might work. Where do you park around there?
Mike
I park at the shopping center nearby and walk over, but if anyone knows a better meeting spot, I'm all for it.
-
I can make it on Sunday if I can get a ride. Anyone live near [my location]?
-
Ouch. That would be a $75 uber ride coming from Venice.
-
Crystal Cove might work. Where do you park around there?
Mike
Mike, do you want to pick a meeting spot? I'm thinking maybe 10 or so, if that works for everyone.

Here's the meeting spot for Crystal Cove that was talked about last time... Coastal Peak Park, right at the North / west side entrance to Crystal Cove Park.
To reach it, either take the 1 PCH, and go up Newport Coast Dr.
Or if you take the 405 S -> 73 S then get off at University or MacArthur before the toll starts!!!
Plenty of space for free parking.
Hope to see you all there! Annnd, Hope I don't sleep in... >.<
I can make it on Sunday if I can get a ride. Anyone live near Cypress?
WhoopWhooop, I can come pick you up since no one volunteered themselves. Message me an address I can pick you up at, I'll send you my phone number.
Otherwise, lemme know if you decide to not go....
or if I sleep in there might be no choice for you...
...but then Sunny would totally kill me.... scaryyy :O
-
Shoot for next week when there's more time to plan? Message boards were down for me yesterday.
Mike
-

Mike
Fair enough. Maybe next week then..
-
The above meeting place Shor pointed out is a good hike with some nice ocean and mountain views and free, abundant parking. The downside is that no dogs are allowed on that particular one.
Mike
-

Mike
It sounds like a nice place, even if dogs aren't allowed there. Zoe can hang out at home with a rawhide or something.
Crystal Cove works, then. What day next week works best for everyone?
-
How about next Saturday at 10:00 AM?
Mike
-
Works for me.
-
I'll be there!
But how will we pace ourselves without Zoe commanding us to take breaks? :P
-
Shor is driving me. Hooray!
-
Shor,
I think Sunny has a cat. I think only dogs aren't allowed on that particular hike. The cat could sub for Zoe.
Actually the sign, if one were to read it explicitly, says to the effect "No German Shepherds," which would not include Zoe.
Mike
-

Awesome!! We're looking forward to meeting you! :)

Mike
I think I should follow Mike's interpretation and bring Zoe along on Saturday. If a ranger drives by and tries to ticket us, Mike can explain his German Shepherd theory. :P
-
Those little felt reindeer antlers dogs wear at Christmas is an alternate idea for minimizing Zoe's likelihood for getting caught.
Mike
-
I think Zoe's gotten wind of the fact that I'm planning on going on a hike without her. I foresee a trip/fall in my future preventing me from going tomorrow...
-
See you guys soon, hope everyone can make it!
-
Yep, see you there.
Mike
-
Agh! Running about 15 minutes late. Sorry guys!
-
Great meetup on Saturday!
-
Vultures were literally circling us on the hike but everyone made it.
Mike
-
Great meetup on Saturday!
Aww... No awesome meetup synopsis? :/
-
I really enjoyed meeting you guys! It makes me look a fool for avoiding these meetups for a year. haha
-
Great meetup on Saturday!
Aww... No awesome meetup synopsis? :/
In the cold early morning light of a winter's day, four voyagers set forward on a mountain trek through the wilderness backcountry of the Southern California desert. Narrowly missing encounters with lizards the size of alligators and snakes the size of anacondas, the group persevered even though constantly circled by vultures, barely negotiating the Lord of the Rings-esque trek without injury and starvation.
And then we hit Sharky's up for lunch.
-
I really enjoyed meeting you guys! It makes me look a fool for avoiding these meetups for a year. haha
It was great meeting you too, WhoopWhoop! We'll have to schedule another meetup soon.
-
Commenting from Long Beach so I can catch the next meet up :) I love hiking too!
-
Chiming in from Lake Elsinore so I can keep up!
-
Following from Tustin -- down for a beach or hiking meet-up!
-

Sweet! I'm in Tustin, too.
Seems like a good number of people are posting on this thread- may be time for another meetup soon! Maybe in a few weeks?
-
I'm up for another meetup. The other ones were good fun.
Mike
-
Hi, I just moved to Corona del Mar and would love to join you guys on your next meet up. Leaving this post here so I can follow the chat.
-
I'm up for another meetup. The other ones were good fun.
Mike
Cool! I'm thinking of maybe a meetup either the weekend of the 18th or 25th- which works better for everybody? Maybe a moderate hike or something similar?
-
Sounds good to me. Either date works.
Mike
-
Weekend of 25th works for me
-
Cool- any suggestions on where to go for a hike?
-
Either weekend works for me.
-
Unless something changes, the better weekend will be the 25th.
-
Let's aim for the 25th then.
Mike
-
The weekend of the 25th sounds good.
Anyone want to suggest a good hike? Maybe Black Star Canyon? :-)
-
Does the waterfall have water? I thought we were in a huge drought... ;)
-
Hm. All these hiking spots are a long ways from me. If anyone's passing by *removed* and can pick me up, I have gas money!
-
Black Star Canyon looks awesome. How did I not know it was there?!!
I hope my out-of-shape self can handle whatever hike you guys are dreaming up. A little intimidated...
-
@Bookworm if its tough to finish, just means the beers taste better at the end. Black Star looks good to me where do you want to meet?
-
Definitely in for Black Star!
-
Sweet! Glad to see that there's so much interest. Which day works better, the 25th or the 26th?
-
I think the 26th is better, but I should be able to do the 25th if that's what everyone decides on. If I get work, though, I should probably take it and try for the next meetup.
-
I might try to join! I don't know if it's Mustachian driving to OC twice in a weekend but I'll see what I can do. :)
-
Cooks Corner afterwards please :). I'm open for either date
http://cookscorners.com/
-
Sounds like were leaning toward the 26th?
-
Saturday.... but I'm will to go with the majority
-
I might try to make it, depending on the day and time since I'll be in that area....fyi Ladera Ranch's community garage sale is on the 25th
-
Either day works for me.
-
Either day works for me and i'm new to the area so i'll let one of the Veterans make the executive decision ;)
-
It looks like either day works for me, too.
-
If anyone is coming from Santa Monica/LAX area and would be willing to carpool let me know. I'll gladly pitch for gas or pay for lunch or something.
-

Take the green line down to the Norwalk station and I'll pick you up there if you like
Eric

Saturday kids! :)
http://www.gohikeit.com/2013/08/black-star-canyon-falls-hiking-trail.html
-
It'll work for me!
-
I'm working on getting my 25th freed up for this meetup.. but it might not happen.... :(
Looks like it'll be a nice turnout too..
-
Whoopwhoop, I wish I was coming from that way. Who did you carpool with last time? Could you do so again?
Iz okay. Shor drove me last time, but it's way out of his way. If I was closer to the Buena Park Metrolink station, I'd try to take surfHB up on his offer.
Have fun guys!
-
10 it is, see you there
-
SurfHB was kind enough to offer me a ride, so I'll be there!
-
I'm probably going, but it's not 100% yet. Anyway, would we all meet at the trailhead?
-
I'm so excited! I've been having a mustachian argument with myself all day about whether I should buy some hiking boots or wear my old worn out sneakers. So far, I'm resisting. :)
-
Dont feel bad...Im devoid of hiking boots myself :)
-
I'm probably going, but it's not 100% yet. Anyway, would we all meet at the trailhead?
Yes
-
I can't make it to this one... will try for the next! Have fun!!
-
I can't make it either, boo hiss! Chippewa, I hope you're able to get some rest today. Everyone else, have a great time! Next time I'll be able to make it hopefully.
-
Aw, so sorry, Chippewa!
I'm on my way now.
-
Bookworm and I had a good little hike, sorry the rest of you couldn't make it.
-
Whoop Whoop, surfhb, and I also had a good hike. We left a little later at around 10:30 AM. Likely we saw each other at some point on the trail.
Mike
-
Gah! A little hike??? It was fun. On the way home I was plotting to go back with my kids sometime.
Thanks again, ice813, for yanking me up all those boulders and not minding being crashed into.
-
Well this sucks. Next time I'm leaving my phone number so there's no confusion :)
Was talking to Sunny and she REALLY wants to go bowling on the next meet up so Im proposing this for May sometime. :)
Eric
-
Despite the mix up, sounds like the meetup was still fun, based in surfhb's description :-)
Sorry I missed up. I'd definitely be up for bowling or something like that soon!
-
It was definitely a good time and meeting surfhb was great.
I'd be up for bowling sometime.
Mike
-
Cool- maybe bowling around the week of the 15th? What do you guys think?
-
Yes. Bowling at Tustin Lanes at 6pm on sat 5/16
I'll be there regardless with some friends..... 👐👐
Eric 714-four 58-374six
-
Won't be able to make this weekend. Already committed to a fundraiser for aids life cycle. Have a good one.
-
Bummer.....I'll be there around 5 to get us a couple lanes
-
Looks like there isn't much interest in the bowling meeting. Bummer!!
I'll try my best to make it.
-
Anyone interested in a June meetup?
-
yes
-
count me in
-
I might be available.
-
I say we go fishing.....El Nino is back and its going to be good.

-
I'm in but don't think I could do an extended fishing trip.
-
Just the half day
-
Fishing sounds fun. And it's something different, which is nice.
Or else we can go hiking in a few weeks, which works as well.
-
Oh man, just saw the last few posts about fishing. I *love* fishing. I'm in Irvine btw...
Anyone into or up for some surf fishing? You do need to have a license on you for that. Pier fishing is free but I don't like sitting at the pier all day watching to see if the rod tip twitches.

Never tried surf fishing before, but it looks like fun. We never did end up doing a June meetup, so maybe a July meetup is in order.

It is fun but you do have to get up a bit earlier so that can be a committment. Anywhere between 4am through 9am is usually ideal before the crowds start forming. I've found that 7am and onward is where the surfers start showing up in full force. But this is all at Newport Beach too... not sure if there are any emptier beaches that would be better (maybe Huntington, Bolsa Chica, Sunset, Seal, etc). Laguna Beach is pretty much off-limits due to MLPA restrictions. Crystal Cove could be another option but there's an entrance fee for cars (same with HB/BC too but there are places to park and walk). I guess it just depends on how "Mustachian" you want to get in regards to spending money.
-
Hey folks!
I was debating posting this in the "questions" section but, I thought this might be a better location instead. (I can always delete it and move it if I need to) in any case, there's a decent possibility that I might be landing a job in Irvine, if I do get the job I really hope I can come for one the meet ups!
So my question is, I've lived most of my adult life without a car and everyone keeps telling me that LA and orange county is impossible to live in without a car. I keep insisting that I hear that Irvine is very bikeable, and I see that there are plenty of neighborhoods near the Metrolink or near bus lines. Can any of you fine folks recommend any walkable, bikeable neighborhoods in the orange county area or near the inland Empire (pink), or orange county (orange) Metrolink lines? I'd like to get a house and split it with roommates, live near some sort of nature (even rural or near a big park would be nice option), near a library, farmers markets, and art, culture, and neighborhood festivals.
I was thinking Laguna Beach (maybe seems too far), the city of Orange, Irvine, Corona/Riverside or Santa Ana. My friends have said that Huntington Beach and Long Beach seem more my style but it seems like a long commute on bike or bus to Irvine?
In any case, thank you so much for any help you can give!
-
OC is impossible without a car. LA is better, but still difficult..
-

You think all of that exists in a walkable neighborhood in Southern California? lol. In all seriousness, though, unless you're living in a beach community (and have no reason to leave it), you're probably not going to find most of your wish list in a walkable/transit-friendly area. But beach living can be very pricy.
What's your price range for housing? The areas you mentioned vary drastically in price. An 3 bedroom house in Laguna area is like $4k-5k/month, and it takes an hour by bus to get to Irvine. Irvine housing might be more like $2-3k, and Riverside might be even less.
If you're interested in the transit times (without car), search Google maps for directions and then change the icon at the upper left to the bus (which shows transit times).
-
Depending on what bikable means to you, Costa Mesa isn't a bad option. The Back Bay is there (along with Fairview Park on the other end of town), Newport Public Library (Mariners and Central) are close-ish, there's a Farmer's Market in the fairgrounds on weekends, and it's reasoanbly close to Irvine as well. I used to live in Costa Mesa in an apartment off Bristol and Red Hill which was pretty nice.
Not as much art, culture, and festivals though. Sorry.
-
I live in Corona del Mar and bike to work in Irvine on occasion. Its 5.5 miles door to door for me, but it depends where in Irvine your job is located.
Carona del Mar has a small farmers market and is close to the Newport Beach library which is great. Its further away from the bars nightlife than Costa Mesa though and is more expensive. All depends on your priorities.
-
What people have alluded to is that Irvine is a fairly large city. I live walking distance to North Irvine, but was not considering a job near Irvine Spectrum because that's ~10 miles away. My office is in Santa Ana, but walkable within a mile to Costa Mesa, Irvine, and Tustin.
Laguna or Corona del Mar would have the culture you're looking for (at a steep price), but would not be optimal for an Irvine commute, maybe if you were near UCI. I second Costa Mesa or even Downtown Santa Ana as likely doable for your commute, ~affordable, and with some of the culture you're interested in. City of Orange is great with character and some amenities you're looking for, but I don't think you'd bode well there w/o a car. Don't consider the Inland Empire.
Irvine's not all that bad, but being a master-planned community it just feels odd at times.

Hey mustachians!
I promise you that I haven't been ignoring you all and I truly appreciate the help. In fact I've been spending the last few days scouring the Internet, determining which places would be best for me. You've been really helpful with your suggestions, and I've been checking them out online. (Craig's list, Google transit, Google biking, Street view etc.)
I've sort of realized that orange county and LA is totally different from any other place that I have lived in the country, and since I love hiking and naturalist activities, I've determined that living without a car will really limit my opportunity to meet new people and join meet ups etc. outside of work if I decide to keep my car-free life-style.
So as any mustachian I want to set aside as much money as possible towards financial independence, so if this possibility becomes a reality I wanted to try to continue living without a car to cut down on my expenses as much as possible so I could set aside 50% of my income. My price range for my portion of the home (depending on how many bedrooms it has) was somewhere between $800-$1300 a month. I really like rural living and city living but I'm not a big fan of your typical suburban atmosphere. (strip malls and big box stores etc)
One last question for you all, If I get a car, other than Trabuco Canyon, is there any other place near orange county that offers a more rural lifestyle? A place where I could have a backyard garden. If any of you guys know let me know and again, seriously, thank you for all of your help!

You're not going to find backyards in the urban areas. I wouldn't really consider any part of Southern California "rural". Maybe 30 years ago, but not today, there's been quite a bit of development and they continue to develop - the growth in the IE is a bit insane.
-
I thought some places in Riverside had bigger yards?
But yes most places here in Irvine don't have any form of a yard.
Why are you moving here? For the job? I just ask because it's a HCOL area. I pay $2020/month for a 700 sq ft apartment in Irvine to give you an idea.

Riverside has some big houses/big yards, but they aren't cheap. There are also a lot of apartments in Riverside. Living in Riverside and working in Irvine would be a very brutal experience, even if you found a way to make it worth metrolink.
-
I'm going to have to find a happy medium. As for a yard, it doesn't have to be a big yard. Even a patio I can put some containers out on would be alright, I just really enjoy vegetable gardening. =) You guys have been a big help thank you!

I knew a guy that did it and he hated his life. Even in a Vanpool he said it was terrible. I purposely paid a little more to live in Irvine to be closer to work and avoid the drag that is commuting.

I'm looking to work in OC (hopefully sooner rather than later), and if/when I finally do, I'd love to join in a meetup!
-
Best of luck kittycat. Look forward to you joining us, mustachians seem to be a rarity in these parts!
-
There hasn't been a meetup in a while- anyone interested in a September meetup?
-
If it doesn't involve hiking or mountain climbing I'm interested.
-
Yes! Always up for a meet up.
-
There hasn't been a meetup in a while- anyone interested in a September meetup?
I'd be down for kayaking or paddle boarding if anyone is in.
-
Kayaking might be fun- or maybe a low-key hike.
How about next weekend?
-
Down for next weekend. Kayaking or hike sounds great.
-
Maybe Sunday the 13th? I have plans in San Diego on Saturday the 12th. Not sure if I'll be driving back up that night or staying down there.
-
If it's on Sunday, I'm down to meet up. I'm out in the San Gabriel Valley, but don't mind driving.
-
Sunday the 12th sounds good, if people are still interested in meeting up. Should have cooled down a bit by then.
Maybe just a low key hike in the Back Bay? Or there's always the dollar move theater, if we want A/C.
-
Hike sounds good, as long as we're under 100 degrees!
-
Hey everyone. Long-time lurker of MMM website and finally joined the forum. Has there been any recent OC meetups or could we squeeze one in before all of the holidays start (might be great to discuss MMM gifts for family etc.) Let me know. Thanks!
Clay
-
We tried to throw one together last month.. but it fell apart at the planning stages.
Gotta put in some lead time and get details hashed out so we have a concrete plan...
-
How many people seemed interested before? If we threw out a date first, such as November 14th, before we decided where, maybe that would help.
-
I could meet up on the 14th
-
I am interested in but can't fully commit right now to Nov 14
-
The 14th sounds like a good date. We can start organizing something now, since people are interested.
-
I might be in, it's 50-50 right now as I will be moving locations and that will be the last weekend to be completely moved out.
Should be completely done before that date comes around... should be...
-
Alright, lets get together even if very small on the 14th.
Maybe a park with a view, Castaways Park in Newport Beach?
Meet for a beer . . . I am up for anything.
Clay
-
Anyone interested in a short hike tomorrow?
-
Dang, headed out of town this weekend that's why I was shooting for next weekend. Where are you headed?
-
Something short and easy, like Peter's Canyon.
-
Sorry I"m going to have bail on the 14th got some family coming in town. Hopefully I'll be able to make the next one.
-
Hello,
Are there any OC Mustachians out there who need to update their resumes and LinkedIn profiles like me? I need someone to hold me accountable to actually doing it! I live in Tustin and can meet at a local library one Saturday morning or afternoon. Anyone in the same boat?
-
Wow! There are so many people in Orange County in this place!
Looks like a lot of outdoorsy people as well.
I'd suggest going to Red Rock Canyon in Whiting Ranch. Doesn't even feel like Orange County.
From Google Images
This looks awesome.
-
Happy New Year everyone!! We haven't had a meetup in a while, so... anyone interested in a January meetup?
-
I'm planning on checking out the the Corona Skyline trail either next weekend or the following weekend. While not OC, it is pretty close. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Is anyone interested in a non-hike-related meet up?
I get that, as Mustachians, many would scoff at the idea of a Starbucks meet up, but what about something like In-N-Out? Surely, a delicious $3-4 burger (or grilled cheese, for the vegetarians!) for the sake of hanging out with other OC Mustachians isn’t TOO face-punch-worthy? :P
PS - Long time lurker, first time poster. :)

Sure, why not? Which one were you thinking?
-
Sure, I'm in for a Meetup. Always nice to meet other mustachians.
Any particular OC location in mind?
-
Don't be too quick to judge! Many people here might use Starbucks as their one cheat or they just happen to get a lot of gift cards!
Don’t worry… I wouldn’t have much to stand on if I judged Starbucks drinkers. It’s one of my cheats, too! :P
I just anticipated virtual face-punches if I actually suggested it to a group of Mustachians... :)
The one without a long line ;)! Not around for an OC meet up myself but you guys might want to check out HB Central Park. Good easy walking with dogs allowed (except in the nature center) and a couple of outdoor restaurants for coffee. Also an In and Out down the street a mile.
I agree with spartana! Shortest line!! :P
Seriously, though, the HB Central Park is awesome, and that In-N-Out nearby would be a great spot to meet. It’s hard to miss! We could meet up for burgers, and then maybe go for a walk around the park later.
http://www.yelp.com/biz/in-n-out-burger-huntington-beach
Actually, the HB Central Library is connected to the park, and there's an awesome water-fountain/study area where we could meet and chat, no purchases required!! The water sounds are at the perfect level where you can hear your party talking, but you don't disturb or overhear the people around you. They're open on Saturdays until 5, and we could sit inside or walk through the park as desired:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/huntington-beach-central-library-huntington-beach
From what I saw earlier in the thread, though, it seems like a lot of people are from Irvine… would either of these places be a convenient location for the people who are interested in this meeting?
And what dates are looking good for people? The next two Saturdays (Feb 6th/13th) are out for me, unfortunately, but we probably need more planning time anyway. Maybe the 20th? 27th?

Potentially down! I've had fun meeting mustachians in person so far, but the mustachian in me notices that there are like 15 In N Outs in between there and here. lol
Doesn't HB have fire pits? Could do bonfire / s'mores. :)
-
Sounds good to me. I can't do hikes so as long as it doesn't conflict with anything I can't change, count me in.
-
Sounds good... Don't know if I'd make it out but fyi the 91 is closed the weekend of Feb 19-21
-
... the mustachian in me notices that there are like 15 In N Outs in between there and here. lol
Yeah... this is why I was asking if these were convenient locations for everyone involved. I don't mind driving a bit to meet other mustachians, and it makes sense to find a place that's closest to the largest number of people attending.
I also have a few ice-breaker type board/card games (Exploding Kittens, anyone?), that could be fun to play as a group, if we're somewhere with a table to work with (library/In-N-Out/whatever).
Sounds good... Don't know if I'd make it out but fyi the 91 is closed the weekend of Feb 19-21
Good to know! So maybe Feb 27th or March 5th?

I might be a bit concerned about getting too loud in a library. I'm good with driving to HB. I don't mind driving a bit, I've driven a lot further than HB to meet mustachians. Plus, If I'm driving to experience Exploding Kittens rather than to eat an In N Out burger, it's suddenly become a lot more exciting. :)
It probably depends on the In N Out though, some of those places are jam packed and they probably need the tables available for turnover.
On the 19th-21st, the 91 is only closed between the 71 and the 15 in Corona. There should be some delays, but I can't imagine it would be that bad on the coastal side of things. I'll be staying in OC that weekend to escape the traffic madness.
-
Hello, I live in the Orange County area, I would like to meet up as well.
Am I invited? I"m a die-hard mustachian.

Haha, everyone is invited!

No fire pits but barbeques. The west side of the park (between Goldenwest and Edwards) has some near the dog park and some near the lake and restaurant and scattered about between nature center, frisbee golf course, and horse stables and trails.. Most might be taken weekends though but doesn't get too crowded. I'm not sure about the east/library side (Goldenwest and Gothard) tough but probably some as its the bigger side. The In and Out is on Talbert and Beach Blvd.
FYI, According to this link, HB does have fire pits at:
Huntington City Beach
Huntington State Beach
Bolsa Chica State Beach

Yeah all the Beach's have tons of fire pits so you could have a big bonfire there but the park only has barbeques. It's also free parking at the park but $15/vehicle at the state Beaches unless you have a state park pass. Newport and Balboa also gave fire pits but not as many as Huntington and they also have paid parking. If you guys are looking for an easy walking cheap meet up HB state or city beach, Central Park, or Bolsa Chica Wetlands are all good. Just byo food. Irvine and other more central areas probablt have similair parks. If you want a long hike probably Whiting Ranch or similar.
The person who wanted In N Out specifically wanted less physical activity than a hike, so I was just trying to throw something out there that is both fun and sedentary. :)
I mean, yeah,it totally costs to park, and to buy firewood, and ingredients to cook/ s'mores...but i'm still down with the exploding kittens idea if someone has an idea for a meeting spot...if the in n out is conducive for that environment, then I'm for it....
-
are there any dates locked in yet? I wanna put it on my calendar before I forget.
Travis A.
-
I don't think that 's been decided. Someone make a decision. :)
-
Saturday, March 5th please. I'm up for an active day or a chill one. Just getting to hang out with fellow Mustachians is what it's all about!
-
I'll be in the area Sunday March 13, if the 5th isn't chosen.
-
I can do the 5th and the 13th. Perhaps one can be outdoors and the other indoors to accommodate people's varying fitness levels? Whiting Ranch one weekend and In-&-Out in HB on the other?
-
Good idea! If it works out for everyone else, I'd prefer to do Whiting Ranch on the 13th since that is close to where I am staying.
-
Thanks SeaEhm! Alright - Sunday, March 13th at Whiting Ranch (meet at the nice shaded grass area at the entrance to the park).
What time works for everyone? If El Nino decides to grace us with its presence, we can meet at the Foothill Ranch In-&-Out for lunch instead (11:30am before the rush?) as a backup plan. Let's get a count of how many can make it below...?
-
Pretty sure I can make it. Is my dog welcome?
<edit> google tells me my dog has to stay home. </edit>
-
Is anyone up for meeting early in the morning for a hike or whatever at Whiting? Just found out my cousin's wife is throwing him a surprise birthday luncheon on the 13th so I've got a family obligation at 12:30pm now. I swear...best laid plans, LOL!
-
Possibly but early is a relative term, what time are you thinking? Would it need to be earlier than 10 am? What time would you need to leave?
We could meet somewhere other than Whiting if that works better for you
-
Almosthw - thanks for the reply! Early for me would be 8am but perhaps MMM readers aren't early birds. No worries, I'll catch up with you folks at the next meetup:-)
-
Well, a time hasn't been set yet.... What time did everyone else want to meet? If the group wants to go early, I will do it!
-
I could do an 8 am hike on Saturdays or Sundays depending on where it is/how long of a drive it is for me. Just tell me when and where. I did a bit of Skyline in Corona this morning, it was awesome, lots of friendly people mulling about - dirt bikers, dog walkers, runners pushing strollers, kids, retirees.......I barely found a parking spot!
-
Hi TJ,
Here's the address I pulled off the OC Parks website - http://ocparks.com/parks/whiting/
Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park
Borrego Parking Lot
26701 Portola Parkway, Foothill Ranch, CA 92610
Is everyone okay for an 8am hike then next Sunday, 3/13? *Crosses fingers that it doesn't rain!*
-
Since I can't hike you can go without me.

Same with me, I'll plan to be there with my husband
-
According to the Whiting Ranch website (http://ocparks.com/parks/whiting/), the trails may be closed for up to three days following rain. I see that it's supposed to rain on Friday night but hopefully, it won't be too heavy. See you all at 8am on the 13th! If the trails happen to be closed, we can grab a coffee somewhere close by. How will we all recognize one another? This is the first MMM meetup I'll be attending so I don't know how you all normally do it.
oldladystache - I'm up for another outing that doesn't involve physical activity. Sitting around chatting about finances and other interesting topics sounds dandy as well. Where would you and/or "exploding kittens" fans like meet up one weekend this month or next?
-
With losing an hour Saturday night and a concert on Saturday night, i'm likely going to have to pass...just too early for me. :D
-
Is this still happening? I guess I'm an "Old 'Stache" at 47, but into hiking. Lemme know and thanks!
Oldladystache - if i can't make this one, up for a subdued evening next month discussing the nuances of personal finance!
-
It's raining pretty good, just have to see how that goes this weekend. If I wake up on time, I'll head out there to hang out.
As far as recognizing people, you could send PM's or you could trade phone numbers if no web access on your phone.
-
I'm still want to meet! Should we forgo hiking due to rain and instead meet at a breakfast type place? Would surfin' donuts in Mission Viejo work (Trabuco Rd)? 8 am? I am open to whatever the group wants to do just throwing it out there...
-
We OC Mustachians seem to be oddly indecisive. Someone call it and I'll be there!
-
I definitely still want to meet up as well so I'll go ahead and call it:-). Since it rained pretty heavily today, Whiting Ranch is probably going to be closed.
I like Almosthw's idea. Let's meet at 8am at Surfin' Doughnuts (that's the place I Yelped for coffee if we couldn't hike so it must be a sign):
26861 Trabuco Rd.
Mission Viejo, CA 92691
I'll be wearing my Notre Dame Fighting Irish sweatshirt in honor of St. Patty's Day so you can spot me. See you all there!
-
oldladystache - hope to see you there since we're kicking back with coffees!

Nice. I will post here tomorrow am if i plan on coming...if I don't, just assume i overslept. haha.
-
Great, thanks! See you there. My husband will wear a UCLA sweatshirt
-
OK, I'll go. I'm gonna aim for 8AM but who knows, I might be a little delayed, depending on traffic.
Don't know what I'll be wearing but my friend will be wearing a service dog vest.
-
Well, that was very nice. Good to meet you all. It was worth getting up early for.
-
I woke up at like 9:30 with this time change. Hopefully next time!
-
It was nice to meet you ladies as well! Looking forward to next time
-
It was lovely meeting you all and thank you very much for the money and life tips! In my consumer-ish group of friends, I'm the one who's always giving financial advice. How refreshing to actually be on the receiving end for once!
Plus, I loved how inadequate (don't worry, it's a good thing!) I felt yesterday morning. Since I was the only one of the group that didn't own their home outright, it re-inspired me to pay that sucker down and get out of the rat race ASAP.
How about a hike or picnic in May that doesn't involve spending money so we stick to our MMM roots? Humans, little humans and furry friends welcome...

Hi All
My hubby and I are located in Long Beach and wanted to invite the OC and South Bay mustachians out to Seal beach to meet at the southern edge of Electric Ave Median Park. There is an arbor and some benches.
Would April 23rd or April 30th work better? Bring your own brunch. =)
I'll cross post in the LA board in case some South Bay mustachians are lurking there.

Either day works for me. And the location is perfect. About 3 miles from home.
-
I will be in the area April 23 but wouldn't be available until the afternoon (since I will bargain shopping at the Ladera Ranch yard sales, mentioning in case anyone else is interested). Since you mentioned brunch, what time were you thinking?

More details on theyard sales! Is this a regular thing? What kinds of stuff have you acquired?
-
Yay!! Let's aim for April 23rd at 10:30am. Bring your own snacks. If I get up early enough, I'll make cinnamon rolls. =)

But Almosthw can't get there until afternoon. Plenty of time for you to make cinnamon rolls. =)
-
Feel free to meet up w/o me if that works better for everyone else; I wouldn't be available and up in that area until probably around 1p.m. I wish I was though; cinnamon rolls sound great!
To my knowledge, the Ladera Ranch yard sale happens only once per year, always at the end of April. I've gotten many great deals over the years - small furniture items, home decor, golf clubs, books, and clothes. There is a TON of kids stuff. Just like any yard sale, some folks practically give the stuff away while others overcharge. ..the golf clubs I bought for $20. After I got home, I cleaned out the pockets and there was a $20 bill, a barely used glove, and many balls inside...score!

Anybody interested in carpooling and splitting the gas in true MMM-style?

Anybody interested in carpooling and splitting the gas in true MMM-style?
I plan to go. I'm just off the 405 in Seal Beach. You could swing by and pick me up. But they are beginning to predict rain. I know they're usually wrong, but maybe this time... Meeting on the beach in the rain might be interesting.
-
Very exciting! Can't wait to meet you all there. If anyone wants to carpool from the LB area, let me know!
-
Anybody interested in carpooling and splitting the gas in true MMM-style?
I'd really like to go, but I don't have a car, so I'd need to carpool (I'd definitely be happy to help with expenses). I'm just off the 405 in Irvine, but could bike to meet a ride anywhere in Irvine vicinity.
-
I'm going and I can drive! I'll be leaving from Irvine where I work (near the Spectrum) but returning to Long Beach.
@flyfig, maybe we can carpool?
@oldladystache, maybe I can pick you up and we can meet up with @flyfig in LB?
@becabeca, I'd be happy to pick you up and take you there, but would you be able to get back to Irvine after? I could take you as far as Long Beach...
@lafemmex, where are you coming from/going to?
We should probably coordinate directly, I think a group text would probably be ideal? If so, text me your name at six1nine-seven8six-three2five8, and I'll start the group text.
I vote working out chipping in for gas depending on how the rides work out :)
SO EXCITED!!!
-
lafemmex and I are planning on going together. I'd rather not get involved with pooling with such a large group. Too much last minute confusion for me. Plus lafemmex and I will probably want to go home earlier than the rest of the group.
Thanks for offering!
-
Sounds good! Becabeca and I are meeting up in Irvine and going together, so flyfig, if you want to meet up in LB and go from there, text me!
-
If @becabeca needs a ride back to Irvine and doesn't mind leaving relatively early (9pm-ish perhaps?), I can do it. I just texted FrizzyFrisbee so she has my digits. See you all SOON...!
-
Hey folks,
Just want to say hello to the folks in OC, especially those who came to Manhattan Beach last night. You might remember me as the guy who was actually able to ride his bike to the event. Was good meeting everyone. I'd enjoy another meetup in the near future, perhaps a little bike ride and/or BBQ. I know OC has some good sand, and I'm told LBC is very bike friendly as well. Cheers, and have a great weekend!
-
Hey! It was great meeting everyone too! Y'all might remember me as the proud owner of a $2 bill signed by none other than the man himself :)
I thought that an OC Mustachian Facebook group might be helpful for coordinating future meetups, since you can create events, take polls, see pictures of people so you can remember what they look like, etc ;) I've sent invites to everyone who was on the email list that Laura put together last night, but here is the link if anyone else would like to join: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ocmustachians/
-
Also.. I would vote for having our next meetup on the 30th instead of the 23rd! But I could probably make it on the 23rd, just a preference :)
For those of you near Long Beach, there is the LB Green Prize festival going on the same day (30th), from 11 am to 7 pm at Admiral Kidd Park. It'd be my first time going, but it sounded fun! More info at their site: http://www.greenprizefestival.com/
-
What's the word, folks? Still interested in meeting on the 23rd? (The event on the 30th looks fun, but that day doesn't work well for me). I also clicked "join" on the OC facebook group.
-
For those not on the FB group, we've decided on this Saturday, April 23rd, at 10:30 am for our next meetup! We'll be meeting at the south end of Electric Avenue Median Park (https://goo.gl/maps/GYwjxxFXHmC2).
Suggestions for activities are welcome :)

We've agreed to get together in May but nobody's stepped forward. So how about Saturday May 28 at my place in Leisure World Seal Beach? What shall we do? Just get together and see what happens? Bring food for sharing? Bring games? Late morning?
Let me know what you think.
-
Thanks for the offer oldladystache but I will be out of town that weekend. Hope to catch up with you and the group sometime soon.
-
Is anyone coming? How about if I promise cinnamon rolls? Strawberry shortcake?
-
Hey OC Mustachians! We have our next meetup coming up on June 18th at 10:30 am in Seal Beach.
If you'd like to join us for a couple hours of food and fun, please either join the Facebook group and RSVP for the event (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ocmustachians), or PM me here. I'm not posting the specific details on the forum since @oldladystache is kindly hosting at her place.
Hope to see some new faces!
-
I just moved out to Orange County less than a year ago, and just requested to join the FB group! Looking forward to the meetup!
-
Don't forget! It's just a few days away.
-
Hiya, I'll definitely be there with a +1 in tow
Luckily sunnyca keeps reminding me of meetups or I wouldn't have seen that one was coming up..
Looking forward to it. I'll be bringing snacky snack foods

YAYAYAY!! Looking forward to it. Any special snack requests that I can bring?
-
Hey all,
I probably met up with some of you at the LA beach meetup. I haven't been super active on the forums so I just checked this thread today. I'm not sure if it's too late to RSVP, but if you've got space for two more my boyfriend and I would like to come. (We're the ones that met on this forum.) Let us know we'd love to drop by with some snacks/drinks.
Thanks!
-
Hey @Shor and @sunnyca, if you haven't already RSVP'd on Facebook, make sure you PM me with your name and the names of any guests! (and if you are on FB and I just haven't connected you on FB to you on the forums... sorry... lol)
-
Hey everyone, we're already planned our next meetup! A potluck lunch picnic on Sunday, July 24th, 11:30 am at the OC Great Park in Irvine.
We'll be coordinating who's bringing what on the on FB event page (not yet created, waiting to confirm some details), so if you haven't already joined the group, join it now! https://www.facebook.com/groups/ocmustachians/
Hope to see you all there!
-
Had fun at the meetup this past weekend! Looking forward to the next one. Posting here so I get notifications.
-
Hey everyone! If you're planning on coming to the next meetup, RSVP on the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/849686518471390/
(You'll need to join the FB group first: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ocmustachians/)
If you're not on Facebook, PM so I can message you the details (exactly where we're meeting, etc) and help you coordinate what to bring.
Hope to see some new faces!
-
Hey OC/LA'ers, we have our next meetup coming up soon in September! It'll be a pool party lunch potluck at a Mustachian home in Orange.
RSVP on the Facebook event page! You'll need to join the FB group first.
FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ocmustachians/
FB event: https://www.facebook.com/events/312068679138149/
If you're not on Facebook, PM me so I can message you the address and help coordinate what you'll be bringing. We also tend to have waaay too much food, so if having to bring food would be a barrier to you coming, you can always bring games, good Mustachian conversation starters, or anything else you can think of :)
Happy summer!
-
Helloooo fellow Mustachians! We've got another meetup potluck planned for Saturday, October 22nd at 11:30 am in Huntington Beach. It's at a private residence, so if you would like to RSVP and join us, please PM me for the address or join the Facebook group!
FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ocmustachians
We will have lawn games, an excess of delicious food and lots of Mustachian conversation to be had. Tiny houses, investing, non-Mustachian indulgences and diy car repairs were some favorite topics from last time :) Hope to see y'all there!
-
Hey everyone, our next meetup is planned! We'll be doing a hike + potluck at a fellow Mustachian's house in Rancho Carrillo off the Ortega highway. If you'd like to join us, RSVP on the FB event page by joining the FB group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/ocmustachians
If you don't have Facebook but would like to come to the meetup, please PM me and I will be happy to give you details.
-
Posting to follow. Maybe I can mke one in the HB area. :)
-
Awesome @Mezzie! The location of our meetups varies across Orange County; we actually had our last one in HB, and before that Orange, Irvine and Seal Beach. The location is dependent mainly on who is hosting. If you live in HB and are interested in hosting our next one, let me know! Could be at your house or just a place you know that would be good for a group of 10-15.
-
Hey y'all, save the date for our next meetup, Saturday May 6th! Will be in Long Beach either at Drake Park or a fellow Mustachian's house down the block.
I'll post confirmed details when we get closer to the date. If you'd like to RSVP, join the Facebook group where I'll be creating an official event page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ocmustachians) or if you're not on Facebook, PM me!
It's been great seeing all the new faces, hope to see some more in May :)
-
Perfect! I'm in. :)
-
Hey fellow Mustachians! Our next meetup is right around the corner, Saturday May 6th, 10:30 am at Drake Park in Long Beach. We'll be grilling, and our hosts are providing burgers & hotdogs. If you'll be joining us, please bring a side or drinks to share, and RSVP so I can get a rough headcount.
If you're on Facebook, join the group and RSVP on the event page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ocmustachians/
If you're not on Facebook, you can reply or PM me to RSVP.
See you then!
-
Hi all, if you're planning on coming tomorrow and you didn't join the FB group or PM me to RSVP, just know that we've moved the location. It's nearby, but at a member's private residence. If you'd like to join us, PM me and I can send you the address. Thanks!
-
Greetings all! As I am closer to OC than LA I would love to meetup sometime. I am not on FB though. Anywho, hopefully my SO and I can make the next meetup.
-
Is this meetup still going? I am interested in going to the next one, I just moved down to Irvine.
-
Hey olob! It sure is, but most of the communication is done via the Facebook group, so you'll want to join there to stay up to date: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ocmustachians
I used to manage it but I moved to Portland so a fellow Mustachian took over the FB group (not sure if he still checks the forums though). The last meetup was Aug 4th and I don't think they have anything planned at the moment, but I'm sure they'll have something coming up in the next month or two. Hope you're able to connect!
-
Thanks! I submitted a join request on the FB group.
-
Hi everyone! I'm new to the blog/forum, but reading all the posts I can find! Is the OC group still active? Let me know. I don't really use FB anymore as I'm trying to cut all distractions from my goals (including financial). But would love to gather with like-minded folks and have great discussions on finance!
-
Hi @Coffee79 yes, the group is still active. Unfortunately, pretty much all that activity is on Facebook. We have meetups every other month or so, but I often find out about them after they’ve passed, since I’m rarely on Facebook.
-
We have an upcoming Mustachian Meetup at my house in Huntington Beach on Saturday January 19th. It’s a potluck dinner starting at 5pm. For those not on our OC Mustachians Facebook page, pm me for the address. Excited to see everybody, it’s been an age!

So bummed I just noticed this, I live in HB. Please update this thread for the next one!
-
PTF, for future updates!
-
The next meetup is scheduled for:
Sunday the 28th of April
8am to noon
At Aliso Beach County Park in Laguna Beach
(31131 S Pacific Coast Hwy, Laguna Beach, California 92652)
Meetup is combined with OC Mustacians Facebook group and the OC ChooseFI group. See attached image for parking and meetup location.
-
I'll probably join up with this group when I get home from work today.
-
Not much happening in the FB group these past few years....are people still around? I moved back to OC about 6 months ago.
